- Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

Aim Non-native fish species have been closely related to serious damage to aquatic biodiversity due to their negative effects on native fauna. We aim to report the first and alarming occurrence of the non-native catfish “jaú” Zungaro jahu in the Iguaçu River basin above the Iguaçu Falls, a high-endemism Neotropical ecoregion for fish. Methods Fish samplings were taken with a bottom gill net in the Segredo Reservoir, where they were anesthetized in benzocaine hydrochloride and fixed in formaldehyde in the field, later identified in the laboratory and housed at the Museu de História Natural do Capão da Imbuia (MHNCI). Results Our recent samplings in the Iguaçu River basin recorded one non-native individual of the catfish “jaú” Zungaro jahu in the Segredo Reservoir. Conclusions We mainly intend to alarm about the risk of expansion of the occurrence of this non-native species throughout the cascading reservoirs in the Iguaçu River where it could potentially develop serious damage to the trophic chain, predation of small-sized endemic species, and competition, especially in the sites where the endemic and endangered pimelodid “surubim-do-iguaçu” (Steindachneridion melanodermatum) maintains viable populations, currently restricted to the Lower Iguaçu River basin exhibiting recent signs of a population bottleneck.

ESSENTIAL amino acids ,AMINO acids ,AQUACULTURE ,MULTIVARIATE analysis ,FISH farming - Abstract
Pirarucu is a carnivorous fish species from the Amazon river basin. There is growing interest in pirarucu farming, but scarce information for specific diets is a limitation. We analyzed the muscle tissue amino acid profile of pirarucu in order to estimate its amino acid requirements by using a diverse sample pool. Wild pirarucu was captured in the Araguaia and Caiapós river basins (Tocantins, Brazil). Farmed pirarucu was purchased from fish farms in the states of Maranhão and Tocantins (Brazil). Fish were sampled in two size classes: 1.66 ± 0.22 and 10.49 ± 1.07 kg body weight. Multivariate statistical analyses were applied to amino acid profiles among the groups, using R software with Vegan package. Muscle amino acid profiles varied according to pirarucu origin and size class. Estimated values can be adopted to formulate diets for pirarucu. Pirarucu fillet is a good source of essential amino acids for human consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FISHING , *LITERATURE reviews , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *CONFERENCE papers , *INTRODUCED species - Abstract
ABSTRACT We reviewed the scientific literature to assess the current status of recreational fishing in the Neotropical region. In total, 122 publications met our criteria and are included here. Since 1990, the number of studies published on recreational fishing in the region significantly increased. Recreational fishing was evaluated in 13 countries and two territories. Most studies were in marine environments. In total, 372 fish species captured through recreational Neotropical fishing were registered. In South American countries, the presence of nonnative species was significant. Studies were concentrated in a few countries or were not published in scientific articles, conference papers, or book chapters, and some aquatic environments, such as coastal areas, bays, coastal lagoons, and reservoirs, were not studied. In addition, there are few lines of investigation into the practice of this activity in the region, and new investigations are necessary, especially with respect to environmental problems. Moenkhausia australe (Eigenmann, 1908) Moenkhausia australe Eigenmann 1908: 103 [original description]. Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae — Reis et al. 2003: 150. Material examined. Table 2; Figure 5H. Deep body; terminal mouth; inner row of premaxilla with 5 teeth, outer with 3 or 4, dentary with 9–12 and maxilla with 1 or 2 teeth. Lateral line complete, with 19–26 pored scales; longitudinal series with 24–26 scales; transversal series above lateral line with 4, 4½ or 5 scale rows and below with 3, 3½ or 4 scale rows. Dorsal fin with 11, pectoral fin with 11–13, pelvic fin with 8, anal fin with 24–27 and caudal fin with 19, total rays. Ground color silvery; scales with dark-brown border, conferring reticulated pattern to body; 1 dark-brown humeral spot; anterior half of caudal peduncle with light area. Hyaline fins, except caudal fin. Moenkhausia australe is morphologically similar to M. forestii and M. sanctaefilomenae, but can be distinguished from them by having lateral line completely pored, rarely disrupted (vs lateral line incompletely pored, in M. forestii and M. sanctaefilomenae). The ichthyofauna from 3 streams (Água Boa, Perobão, and Santa Maria) to the lower Iguatemi River were inventoried, which is located in the upper Paraná river basin, in Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Sites in the upper, intermediate, and lower portions of each stream were quarterly electrofished from March to December 2008. All sampled fish (n = 6,816 individuals) represented 43 species of 5 orders, and 16 families. The most abundant species was Phalloceros harpagos (63.5%), followed by Astyanax aff. paranae (10.6%), Hypostomus ancistroides (5.9%), Gymnotus inaequilabiatus (3.4%), and Knodus moenkhausii (2.7%). Despite the high ichthyofauna richness in the lower portion of Iguatemi River, the need to implement and/or expand soil conservation practices and riparian forest restoration is of utmost importance to maintain these populations in the long term.

WATERSHEDS , *FISH reproduction , *FISHERY management , *KEYSTONE species , *SIZE of fishes , *SUSTAINABLE fisheries , *SEX ratio - Abstract
Introduction: Understanding the various aspects of the reproductive biology of fish is a key step towards applying effective strategies for sustainable management of fishery resources. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the sex ratio, reproductive period and lengths at first maturity for 30 fish species caught in the Verde River, upper Paraná River Basin, Brazil. Methods: Fish were sampled monthly from November 2010 to March 2011 and from October 2011 to February 2012, and sampled quarterly from May to August in 2011 and 2012; totaling 14 samples. Fish were measured and weighed in the laboratory. In addition, gender and gonadal developmental stage were identified macroscopically. Subsequently, the sex ratio was determined and significant differences were tested using the chi-square ((f) method. The reproductive period was determined with the use of gonadal developmental stages and the gonadosomatic index. Lastly, length at first maturity was estimated only for the species that presented individuals with sufficient immature and mature gonads to adjust the model. Results: Of the captured individuals, 51.5 % were male, and 48.5 % were female. Fifteen species showed significant differences in their sex ratios. The reproductive period for most species occurred from October to February, with reproductive peaks in November, December and January. The length at first maturity was estimated for only five species, including Salminus brasiliensis, a keystone species. Conclusions: The sex ratios revealed that for many species, there is a predominance of males over females, which was not expected for this parameter. The reproductive period follows the same pattern observed in Neotropical fish. However, it is noteworthy that some species are starting their reproduction in August. Lastly, estimating length at first maturity for most Neotropical fish remains a challenge, which may lead to difficulties in the use of protective measures to maintain fisheries and conserve fish species. Paraná River ,Eichhornia azurea ,Serrapinus notomelas ,feeding activity ,Rio Paraná ,atividade alimentar - Abstract
AIM: In this paper we assessed the effects of flooding (low and high water period) on the feeding activity and diet composition of Serrapinus notomelas in patches of the macrophyte Eichhornia azurea in a shallow floodplain lake (upper Paraná River Floodplain, Brazil). We also assessed the variations of diet composition and feeding activity along the diel cycle. METHODS: Traps were used to catch the fish inside of macrophyte patches monthly from June/2007 to May/2008. A total of 1038 stomachs were examined. We assessed the feeding activity with the mean stomach fullness degree method. To summarize and support the results of diet composition in the different periods (low and high water periods) and times (dawn, light period, and dusk), was applied a nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS). RESULTS: The feeding activity of S. notomelas did not differ between low and high water periods, but it differed along the diel cycle. The feeding activity was higher during the light period and dusk, at both the low and high water period. The diet composition differed significantly between low and high water periods, and also along the diel cycle. In the low water the diet of S. notomelas was composed mainly by algae and in the high water by Cladocera. Algae were consumed mainly during the light period while Cladocera in dawn and dusk. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that the oscillations in the water level affect the diet composition, but not the feeding activity of S. notomelas. These seasonal changes are probably related to the temporal abundance of food resources, thus, when Cladocera density was low (low water), S. notomelas consumed mainly algae but when Cladocera was more abundant (high water), it became a common food resource.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of gonadal and nutritional index on the reproductive behavior of Scomberomorus brasiliensis Collette, Russo and Zavala-Camin, 1978 (Perciformes, Scombridae) of the western coast of Maranhão, from June 2001 to July 2002. There was a significant dominance of females when considering the total experimental period. The length/weight relationship did not show a significant difference between the sexes in reference to the alometry coefficient. Analyses of the maturation curve, based on the monthly mean values variation of the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic relation, and the condition factor, suggest that the reproductive period occurs from March to June. It was observed that the losses of body and liver weight occurred during the gonodal maturation and reproductive processes. The variation analysis of the repletion index mean values showed that the fishes exhibited better feeding conditions before and after the reproductive season O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a influência das condições gonadal e nutricional no comportamento reprodutivo de Scomberomorus brasiliensis Collette, Russo e Zavala-Camin, 1978 (Perciformes, Scombridae) do litoral ocidental do Maranhão, entre junho de 2001 e julho de 2002.

This study evaluated the spatial and temporal variations in the fish assemblages in Neotropical reservoirs through use of two different approaches: ecosystem approach, using software Ecopath and communities approach through their attributes. Therefore, we used data collected in 30 reservoirs of the Paraná State in 2001. Thirty ecosystem models were generated, one for each reservoir, besides, they were appraised the species richness, diversity index and eveness and at the end that two approaches were appraised in way divergent or convergent. This study was divided into two chapters, the first, entitled "Trophic models in Neotropical reservoirs" in which to evaluate food webs in 30 reservoirs of the Paraná State, Brazil, standardized models (same compartments) were built for every one of them, based on biomass and energy flow, using the software Ecopath. In the second chapter entitled " Ecosystems attributes and communities approach: exploring spatial and temporal patterns for Neotropical reservoirs ". The purpose of this study was to characterize thirty reservoirs located within the Paraná State in six hydrological basins, using some assemblage and ecosystem attributes, as well as the relationship among them. In order to verify those two approaches converges or they diverge in relation to reservoirs.
