Abstract

Caesar's Commentarii de bello civili show a significantly higher occurrence of γνῶμαι than his books on the Gallic war. I argue that this difference in style is due to the different goals of the two works: in De bello civili Caesar has to convince the reader that he was loyal to Roman values while Pompey was not, therefore maxims have, as Aristotle prescribes (Rh. 2,21,16), the function of creating a moral "common ground" with the reader and to show that the author is "a man of good character". 8. The Stylistic Function of Neologisms in Cercidas.

Abstract

In this paper I analyze the rhetorical function of compositional neologisms in Cercidas' versification, in order to provide a new semantical and/or syntactical explanation for single words that have not been correctly interpreted before. In particular I analyze the fragments 1.41–50 Lom., 2.25–7 Lom. and 60 Lom., focusing especially on the correct interpretation of τεθνακοχαλκίδης, συοπλουτοσύνη and μεταμελλοδύνη. 9. Insults and Terms of Abuse in Homer

Abstract

In this dissertation, I analyze abusive words in the Iliad and in the Odyssey both through a traditional “philological” lens and by applying modern sociolinguistic theories. While previous studies were focused on “blame speech” or “invective,” I concentrate my analysis on insulting words, their usage in context, their (mostly metaphoric) origin, and why they are used by and toward certain characters. With this method, I manage to redetermine the meaning of some words through a closer reading of their usage or by taking their etymology into account, analyzing the word’s Indo-European derivation with more precision. On a broader level, the analysis of insults brings me a better knowledge of Homeric society. I also scrutinize the difference between various nouns and verbs which in English can be translated as “insult” and “to insult.” Finally, I summarily analyze Homer’s influence on blame poetry and try to determine what factors underlie the Aristotelian dichotomy of praise vs. blame.
