Sulfate and sulfonate compounds are extensively used as anionic surfactants in personal care products (PCPs), which might pose adverse potential to human health. However, available research mostly identified certain subsets of sulfated and sulfonated surfactants based on target analysis. In this study, we developed a comprehensive nontarget strategy for identification of sulfated and sulfonated surfactants in PCPs using UHPLCHRMS supplemented by an in-lab R script based on characteristic fragment ions and sulfur isotope patterns. A total of 20 sulfate and 12 sulfonate surfactants of confidence level 3 and above were identified in the range of alkyl chain length from C12 to C26 with 0-7 ethoxy groups and molecular weights of 200-600 Da in the PCP samples. The sulfates included 4 alkyl sulfates and 16 alkyl ether sulfates. In addition to commonly reported 4 alkyl benzene sulfonates, this study identified eight sulfonate surfactants for the first time, which were 3 alkyl sulfonates, 3 methyl ammonium sulfonates, and 2 bis-sulfonate sulfonates in the PCPs. Interestingly, 22 sulfate and sulfonate compounds were identified in the negatively labeled PCP samples which were not supposed to contain sulfate and sulfonate surfactants. Microplastics are widespread in many bird species, but the inter-specific variations of microplastic contamination are still unclear. The present study measured microplastics in 24 bird species from South China and investigated the impacts of bird physiological and ecological traits on microplastic contamination. The median abundances of microplastics ranged between 5-167 particles per individual or 0.023-3.58 particles per g body weight. Approximately 60 % of microplastics were within the size range 20-50 µm, with the primary polymer types of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). There was no significant correlation between microplastic abundances and bird body weights and trophic levels (δ 15 N) in different bird species. Insectivorous birds had significantly higher abundances of microplastics smaller than 0.1 mm than granivorous, piscivorous, and carnivorous birds (p < 0.01), which was further supported by the meta-analysis of microplastic contamination in birds. On contrary, meta-analysis results indicate that piscivorous birds tend to accumulate larger microplastics (> 1 mm) than other bird species. Microplastic contamination in different bird species was more influenced by diet source rather than trophic level and body weight. Potential ecotoxicological risks were observed for most insectivorous species in the preliminary risk assessment. As an essential micronutrient, phosphorus plays a key role in oceanic biogeochemistry, with its cycling intimately connected to the global carbon cycle and climate change. Authigenic carbonate fluorapatite (CFA) has been suggested to represent a significant phosphorus sink in the deep ocean, but its formation mechanisms in oceanic low-productivity settings remain poorly constrained. Applying X-ray absorption near edge structure, transmission electron microscopy, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer analyses, we report a unique mineral assemblage where CFA crystals coat phillipsite in abyssal sediments of the East Mariana Basin and the Philippine Sea. This finding suggests that phillipsite provides an ideal microenvironment for CFA formation due to its ability to release calcium cations and its strong adsorption capacity for phosphate anions. The feasibility of such a mechanism was confirmed by long-term (10 mo) laboratory experiments. Furthermore, the CFA forming in the sediment of abyssal plains is found to be enriched in rare earth elements (REE). Pharmaceutical biowastes, rich in organic matter and high in moisture, are typical light industry byproducts with waste and renewable attributes. Thermochemical and biochemical conversion technologies transform these residues into value-added bioproducts, including biofuels, biofertilizers, and bio-carbon materials. Hydrothermal pretreatment effectively removes toxic substances and enhances feedstock for these processes. This review comprehensively examines its role in improving the formation of bioproducts from pharmaceutical biowastes, focusing on (i) upgrading and denitrogenating solid biofuels with better combustion performance; (ii) enhancing biodegradability and gaseous biofuel production via organic matter decomposition; (iii) enriching soluble carbon and nitrogen for liquid biofertilizer; (iv) eliminating antibiotic residues and reducing antibiotic resistance in solid biofertilizers; and (v) stabilizing carbon and nitrogen structures and optimizing pore characteristics for functionalized carbon materials. The review recommends a potential staged thermochemical approach to co-produce nitrogen-enriched liquid biofertilizers and porous carbon materials from pharmaceutical biowastes. Hydrothermal pretreatment emerges as a key technique for facilitating the migration and conversion of essential elements like carbon and nitrogen. Thermodynamic modeling is still the most widely used method to characterize aerosol acidity, a critical physicochemical property of atmospheric aerosols. However, it remains unclear whether gas-aerosol partitioning should be incorporated when thermodynamic models are employed to estimate the acidity of coarse particles. In this work, field measurements were conducted at a coastal city in northern China across three seasons, and covered wide ranges of temperature, relative humidity and NH 3 concentrations. We examined the performance of different modes of ISORROPIA-II (a widely used aerosol thermodynamic model) in estimating aerosol acidity of coarse and fine particles. The M0 mode, which incorporates gas-phase data and runs the model in the forward mode, provided reasonable estimation of aerosol acidity for coarse and fine particles. Compared to M0, the M1 mode, which runs the model in the forward mode but does not include gas-phase data, may capture the general trend of aerosol acidity but underestimates pH for both coarse and fine particles; M2, which runs the model in the reverse mode, results in large errors in estimated aerosol pH for both coarse and fine particles and should not be used for aerosol acidity calculations. However, M1 significantly underestimates liquid water contents for both fine and coarse particles, while M2 provides reliable estimation of liquid water contents. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have attracted considerable attention because of their toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation potential. With the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port and the rapid development of economy, environmental pollution on Hainan Island is becoming increasingly prominent. PFASs have been detected in the seawater and sediments of mangrove ecosystems on Hainan Island. As the receiving water of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and industrial wastewater, rivers are inevitably contaminated by PFASs. However, few studies have focused on PFAS pollution in three large rivers (the Nandu, Changhua, and Wanquan rivers) on Hainan Island. In the present study, the pollution status, potential sources, and ecological risks of PFASs in these three major rivers were explored. Perfluorobutanonic acid (PFBA) (48.7%) was found to be the major PFASs in the surface waters, and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) (19.7%) was the major PFASs in the sediments of the three major rivers. The concentrations of ∑PFASs in the upper-midstream region were low due to minimal human influence and increased in the middle-lower reaches with increasing industrial activity and urbanization, whereas decreased at downstream sites near estuaries where river water was diluted with seawater. WWTP effluent, industrial wastewater discharge, the application and discharge of aqueous fire-fighting foam, storm runoff and landfill leachate were the major sources of PFASs in the three major rivers. In surface water, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA) and perfluorooctadecanoic acid (PFODA) posed low-moderate risks at 5.71-85.6% of the sampling sites. PFASs in the sediment posed no ecological risk. Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a large class of fluorinated chemicals used in various industrial and agrochemical products such as fluorinated benzoylurea (FBU) pesticides. Initiated from an incidental and preliminary finding of three high-abundance FBUs in fish, this study implemented nontarget analysis and characterization for FBUs together with their analogues and transformation products (TPs) in fish using liquid chromatography, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and chemical species-specific algorithms. A total of 23 FBU-relevant compounds were found and tentatively/accurately elucidated with structures, including 18 PFASs and 5 non-PFAS compounds, of which 4 were original FBUs, 8 were FBU analogues, and 11 were FBU-TPs. The total concentrations of FBU-relevant compounds were 0.8-1919.3 ng/g in the fish samples. The analysis strategy and data-processing algorithms can be extended to other fluorine-containing pesticides, and the characterization results provide a new understanding of PFAS pollution and unveil an important source of PFAS pollutants, the agrochemical utilization of FBUs.

Organic contaminants (OCs) are released into the environment through effluent discharges from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), posing risks to environment health. However, emissions from various source, particularly large-scale investigations across different industries, remain poorly understood. Based on both sampling and statistical data, this study estimates the emissions of 10 OCs, including perfluorooctane acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), di-iso-butyl phthalate (DIBP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and bisphenol A (BPA), from the effluents of 160 factories across 8 industries, 541 municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs), and 8 waste treatment plants (WTPs) in the upper Yangtze River Basin. A level III fugacity multimedia model was used to assess the impacts of these emissions on local watersheds. Among the 8 industries, paper production was the largest contributor, accounting for over 80% of total OC emissions, which amounted to 89.1 kg/yr. The contributions of domestic and industrial sources were 91.5% and 8.5%, respectively, underscoring the predominance of domestic sources in the release of the 10 OCs. PFOA emerged as the most dominant compound, with total emissions amounting to 4464 kg/yr from domestic sources and 170 kg/yr from industrial sources. The predicted concentrations of OCs in the receiving rivers closely aligned with values reported in existing literature, differing by no more than one order of magnitude. Hydrous aluminosilicates are important deep water-carriers in sediments subducting into the deep mantle. To date, it remains enigmatic how hydrous aluminosilicates withstand extremely high temperatures in the mantle transition zone. Here we systematically investigate the crystal structures and chemical compositions of typical hydrous aluminosilicates using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron probe microanalyzer, and nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry. These single crystals are synthesized at 15.5-22.0 GPa and 1400-1700 °C, featuring pervasive structural disorders. In particular, Al and Si atoms extensively occupy new tetrahedral and octahedral sites that are nominally vacant in their ordered counterparts. High temperature activates disorders leading to variable local crystal structures and more hydrogen incorporation into the crystal structure. The effects of micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) on human health are of global concern because MNPs are ubiquitous, persistent, and potentially toxic, particularly when bound to atmospheric fine particles (PM 2.5 ). Traditional quantitative analysis of MNPs by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) is often inaccurate because of false positive signals caused by similar polymers and organic compounds. In this study, a reliable analytical strategy combining HNO 3 digestion and chromatographic peak reconstruction was developed to improve the precision of pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of multiple MNPs bound to PM 2.5 . The optimized HNO 3 digestion method using high-pressure oxidation conditions effectively removed organic matter within two hours, giving recovery rates of 64 %-110 % for eight target MNPs. The chromatographic peak reconstruction procedure minimized interferences caused by similar polymers and achieved high accuracy (101 % ± 10 %) for polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene, whose concentrations are often overestimated due to overlapping pyrolysis products. Quantification uncertainties for MNPs in real PM 2.5 samples were up to 52 % lower using the new method than using previous methods. The method was validated using PM 2.5 from urban Guangzhou. The total concentrations of the eight target MNPs in the PM 2.5 samples were 100-990 ng/m 3 (median 277 ng/m 3 ) and the dominant MNPs were polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyvinyl chloride, which contributed > 90 % of the MNPs. Few epidemiological studies have investigated associations between anthropogenic heat emissions (AE) and serum lipids. We recruited 15,477 adults from 33 communities in northeastern China in 2009. We estimated AE flux by using data on energy consumption and socio-economic statistics covering building, transportation, industry, and human metabolism. We assessed the associations between AE and blood lipids and dyslipidemia prevalence using the restricted cubic spline models. The regression coefficients (β) and the 95% CI of total cholesterol for the 75th and 95th percentiles of the exposure were 0.23 mmol/L (95% CI: 0.15, 0.30) and 0.25 mmol/L (95% CI: 0.18, 0.32). We also found AE was positively associated with dyslipidemia. Participants who were female or who had low incomes exhibited more pronounced associations. Our research showed that exposure to AE was significantly associated with serum lipids. These novel, valuable findings are useful to inform policymakers to estimate the risks to human health from anthropogenic heat.

The co-occurrence of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is an emerging environmental concern. Wetland plants, with their unique anaerobic-aerobic environments, offer a promising approach for PCBs removal. However, the impact of MPs and NPs on PCBs dynamics in constructed wetlands is not well understood. This study examined the influence of polystyrene MPs and NPs of two different sizes on PCBs fate in constructed wetlands featuring Myriophyllum aquaticum. Results showed that although there was no significant difference in overall PCBs removal rates, the presence of MPs increased residues of highly chlorinated PCBs from 331 μg/kg to 379 μg/kg, while the presence of NPs increased residues of lightly chlorinated PCBs from 125 μg/kg to 153 μg/kg. Additionally, MPs and NPs increased plant uptake of PCBs from 0.08% to 0.10-0.14%, despite potential inhibition of plant growth. While MPs/NPs elevated microorganism counts, they did not affect microbial diversity or community structure. Importantly, MPs significantly inhibited the main PCB-dechlorinating bacteria (Dehalococcoidia) and had a greater impact on PCB-degrading enzymes (dioxygenase, K03381) compared to NPs. The extent to which organic matters (OM) in PM 2.5 affect virus infections and the key organic molecules involved in this process remain unclear. Herein, this study utilized ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry coupled with in vitro experiments to identify the organic molecules associated with respiratory virus infection for the first time. Water-soluble organic matters (WSOM) and water-insoluble organic matters (WIOM) were separated from PM 2.5 samples collected at the urban area of Guangzhou, China. Their molecular compositions were analyzed using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Subsequently, in vitro experiments were conducted to explore the impact of WSOM and WIOM exposure on the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pseudo-virus infection in A549 cells. Results revealed that WSOM and WIOM respectively promoted 1.7 to 2.1-fold and 1.9 to 3.5-fold upregulation of SARS-CoV-2 pseudo-virus infection in a concentration-dependent manner (at 25 to 100 μg mL -1 ) compared to the virus-only control group. Partial least squares model analysis indicated that the increased virus infection was likely related to phthalate ester and nitro-aromatic molecules in WSOM, as well as Lipid C molecules with aliphatic and olefinic structures in WIOM. Interestingly, the molecules responsible for upregulating SARS-CoV-2 receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression and virus infection differed. Thus, it was concluded that ACE2 upregulation alone may not fully elucidate the mechanisms underlying increased susceptibility to virus infection. The efficacy of ferrihydrite in remediating Cd-contaminated soil is tightly regulated by Fe(II)-induced mineralogical transformations. Despite the common coexistence of iron minerals such as goethite and lepidocrocite, which can act as templates for secondary mineral formation, the impact of these minerals on Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation and the associated Cd fate have yet to be elucidated. Herein, we investigated the simultaneous evolution of secondary minerals and Cd speciation during Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation in the presence of goethite versus lepidocrocite. The presence of goethite resulted in a more pronounced ferrihydrite transformation than lepidocrocite because goethite facilitates electron transfer. Coexisting goethite promoted the production of secondary goethite with different morphology by triggering template-directed nucleation and growth of labile Fe(III) derived from ferrihydrite and intermediate lepidocrocite, respectively. However, coexisting lepidocrocite impeded goethite formation from ferrihydrite and acted as the template to facilitate secondary lepidocrocite production. Furthermore, variations in the crystallinity of coexisting lepidocrocite influenced the particle size and crystallinity of the secondary lepidocrocite, reflecting different dominant mechanisms in secondary lepidocrocite formation. Despite partial Cd mobilization into the solution due to Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation, secondary goethite and lepidocrocite re-sequestered Cd through lattice Fe(III) substitution, indicated by an increased structural Cd proportion, expanded lattice spacing, and reduced hyperfine field intensity. Additionally, secondary goethite was more effective than secondary lepidocrocite in sequestering Cd. Coexisting goethite increased the structural Cd proportion by 3.5-fold compared to coexisting lepidocrocite, demonstrating the superior ability of coexisting goethite in enhancing Cd stability during Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation in natural soils. The global climate crisis is likely to lead to a potential supply risk of lithium (Li) over the coming decades. More than half of the world's production of Li is derived from Li-bearing pegmatites. Although pegmatites are widespread, only a small fraction host economically relevant Li mineralization. Revealing which factors cause some pegmatites to be enriched in Li and others to be barren is critical for understanding Li pegmatite formation and for guiding exploration for new Li resources. In this study, we used an approach involving the analysis of natural samples from the Jiajika pegmatite deposit (China), combined with thermal and diffusion modeling. Here we show that Li contents in pegmatites are controlled not only by the initial Li contents in pegmatite melts but also by the temperature of the surrounding country rocks at the time of pegmatite emplacement. Retention of toxic metals/metalloids like arsenic via mineral-water interaction plays a crucial role in the environmental behavior of pollutants. However, the influence of mineral crystallinity on the retention of toxic elements, the evolution of liquid composition, and the interaction mechanism are poorly understood. This study investigated the interaction between As(V) and calcium phosphate (CaP) under oxic conditions with varying crystallinities, particularly amorphous CaP (ACP), across varying As(V) concentrations and pH conditions. Results revealed that the amorphous phase substantially influenced As(V) fate, with the As(V) retention potential of ACP and poorly crystalline hydroxylapatite (HAP) being 13.65 and 12.61 times higher than highly crystalline HAP, respectively. As(V) retention involves the dissolution of ACP and the recrystallization of As(V)-substituted HAP, correlated with three distinct ACP transformation stages during recrystallization. The lower pH (7.5) facilitated ACP dissolution, and the elevated Ca 2+ concentration enhanced the volume of CaP recrystallization. Conversely, higher pH levels (8.0, 8.5, and 9.0) promoted a higher degree of recrystallization, evidenced by reduced residual Ca 2+ levels after 48 hrs (post-crystallization stage). Meanwhile, As-bearing CaP forms with greater competition between PO 4 3- at higher initial As(V) concentrations than lower ones. Additionally, lattice distortion, increases in species of surface bond groups, and reduced crystallinity were observed in the As(V)-bearing CaP product. Overall, this study underscores the pivotal role of ACP and its poorly crystalline counterparts in arsenic retention through the dissolution-recrystallization mechanism.4 3- at higher initial As(V) concentrations than lower ones. The speciation and mobility of arsenic (As) in waters are largely influenced by the colloids; however, the impacts of colloids with different molecular weights (MWs) in water fractions remain largely unknown. Herein, the surface water was fractionated into three colloidal fractions and truly dissolved fraction via cross-flow ultrafiltration. Total As (As(T)) presented mainly as As(V) and existed primarily in the truly dissolved fraction. Arsenic(III) proportions of 3.1 %-8.0 % in various colloids sizes indicated reducing conditions within the colloids particles in surface water around the mine. Negative correlations between EC, TDS and As(T) and As(V) in colloids were found, indicating water properties favored As mobilization in surface water. The aromaticity and humification of DOM reflected endogenous sources in truly dissolved fraction and large-MW colloids and exogenous sources in medium-small-MW colloids. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy detected As-DOM and As-Fe-DOM formation in colloids, highlighting new aspects of colloids in surface water. Autochthonous fungal bioaugmentation (AFB) is a promising strategy for the microbial remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon (PH)-contaminated soils. However, the mechanisms underlying AFB, particularly for degrading recalcitrant PH components, are not fully understood. This study employed stable isotope probing (SIP) and high-throughput sequencing to investigate the AFB mechanisms of two hydrocarbon-degrading fungi, Fusarium solani LJD-11 and Aspergillus fumigatus LJD-29, focusing on three challenging PH components: n-Hexadecane (n-Hex), Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), and Dibenzothiophene (DBT). Our findings indicate that both fungal strains significantly enhanced pollutant removal rates, with combined application yielding optimal results. AFB treatment reduced the microbial diversity index and altered the soil microbial community, especially affecting fungal populations. A significant correlation between the microbial diversity index and degradation efficiency suggests that greater diversity enhances pollutant removal. SIP analysis showed that LJD-11 and LJD-29 could directly assimilate n-Hex and DBT, but not BaP. Correlation analyses between functional microorganisms and other biological indicators suggest that the removal of pollutants is also attributable to indigenous functional bacteria. Additionally, non-inoculated functional fungi present in the soil play a crucial role in BaP degradation. These findings reveal distinct degradation pathways for the three pollutants. The addition of carrier substrate reduced the complexity of the network, while AFB treatment restored it. In addition, the combined fungal treatment resulted in higher network parameters, leading to a more complex and stable network structure. Mangroves serve a crucial role as metal accumulators in tropical and subtropical marine ecosystems, particularly in riverine mangroves, which frequently interact with terrestrial sources. In this study, we focused on the Gaoqiao and Jiuzhou Rivers within the Zhanjiang mangrove forest in Guangdong, China, and collected leaves and surface sediments from the dominant mangrove plant, Aegiceras corniculatum, near the riverbanks. We focused on seven heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, and Hg) in mangrove leaves, surface sediments, and pore water due to their environmental significance and frequent occurrence in mangrove ecosystems. We employed multivariate statistical methods and pollution indicators to assess the potential sources and risk levels of heavy metals in these sediments. Our results reveal that the concentrations of the seven heavy metals in the sediments of the Gaoqiao and Jiuzhou Rivers varied significantly, ranging from 0.03 mg/kg to 100.00 mg/kg. Cd posed the highest ecological risk, followed by Hg and As. The comprehensive potential ecological risk in the Gaoqiao River was lower than that in the Jiuzhou River, likely due to the distribution of industrial enterprises (such as printing and cement plants) in the upper reaches of the Jiuzhou River. Additionally, the heavy metal content in the leaves of A. corniculatum and in pore water within surface sediments ranged from 0.01 to 51.58 mg/kg and 0.001 to 133.70 μg/L, respectively. A significant correlation was observed between the heavy metal concentrations in the A. corniculatum leaves and those in the pore water. Notably, the leaves of A. corniculatum exhibited a remarkable Hg-enrichment capability, highlighting its potential as a mercury accumulator. Most heavy metals in A. corniculatum leaves, pore water, and sediment were concentrated in the middle and upper reaches of the river, primarily due to anthropogenic terrestrial inputs from residential production activities upstream. Halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. The development of methods to detect HOPs in fish is challenging owing to the compositional complexity of fish matrices, which contain high levels of lipids and relatively low concentrations of HOPs. In addition, the lipophilicity of most HOPs renders their extraction difficult. Moreover, the simultaneous determination of multiple HOPs to achieve the high-throughput screening of these analytes is complex. In this study, a reliable and efficient pretreatment method based on ultrasound-assisted extraction, gel permeation chromatography purification, and ultra performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS) was developed for the determination of 12 HOPs in edible fish. The procedures of sample extraction and purification and LC-HRMS detection parameters were optimized to improve the performance of the method. Fresh fish samples were thoroughly rinsed with water, and non-edible parts, including the skin, bones, and phosphorus, were removed. The fish were weighed, cut into small pieces, and vacuum freeze-dried for 48 h. Subsequently, a freeze grinder was used to grind the dried fish into a fine powder. Exactly 2 g of the fish powder was weighed, fortified with isotope-labeled internal standards of the HOPs, and allowed to stand for 5 min. Methanol-acetonitrile (1∶1, v/v) was then added, followed by vortex mixing and ultrasonication. After centrifugation, the supernatant was transferred to a fresh tube. The extraction process was repeated twice and all extracts were combined. The extract was evaporated under a gentle nitrogen flow and redissolved in a mixture of ethyl acetate-cyclohexane (1∶1, v/v). The sample mixture was cleaned using gel permeation chromatography, and the eluate was collected and concentrated under a nitrogen flow. Sample residuals were reconstituted with water-methanol (1∶1, v/v) prior to instrumental analysis. Chromatographic separation was performed using an ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column (100 mm×2.1 mm, 1.7 μm). Water containing 2 mmol/L NH 4 Ac and acetonitrile were used as the mobile phases, and an optimized gradient elution program was applied. Isotope dilution and an internal standard method were used to quantify the HOPs. An electrospray ionization source operated in negative mode was applied to ionize the HOPs, and a full scan together with data-dependent acquisition (DDA) was applied for HRMS. Excellent linearities ( R >0.99) were obtained for all HOPs in the quantification range of 1.0-1000.0 ng/mL. The limits of quantification were 0.5 ng/g. The analytical method was validated using pooled fish samples fortified with HOP standards (4, 40, and 400 ng/g). The recoveries of the HOPs were in the range of 67.6%-133.8%, and the corresponding RSDs were 0.5%-15.6%. A total of 27 commercially available fish samples were analyzed using the developed method, and the results revealed the presence of HOPs in the fish, indicating the practicability of the method for real-world samples. The developed method is rapid, accurate, precise, and suitable for detecting HOPs in fish. This study provides a useful approach for environmental monitoring and food safety assurance by enabling the accurate and efficient analysis of HOPs in commonly consumed fish. The chlorinated paraffin (CP) monomer 1,2,5,6,9,10-Hexachlorodecane (CP-4) was subjected to in vitro biotransformation using human and carp liver microsomes. Five types of CP-4 metabolites (OH-, keto-, enol-, aldehyde- and carboxy-CP-4) were identified in human liver microsomer while only mono-OH-CP-4 was found in the carp liver microsomes. Kinetic studies revealed that the formation of mono-, di-, tri-hydroxylated CP-4, keto-, enol-, and aldehyde-CP-4 in human liver microsomes was best described by substrate inhibition models, whereas the formation of carboxylated CP-4 metabolites best fit the Michaelis-Menten model. Notably, keto-CP-4, enol-CP-4 and aldehyde-CP-4 were the predominant metabolites. The estimated V max values for these metabolites were significantly higher in the human liver microsomes than in the carp liver microsomes. The intrinsic hepatic clearance (CL int ) of CP-4 was higher in humans than in carp, indicating species-specific differences in its metabolism. This study also highlighted potential toxicity concerns, with computational predictions showing varying degrees of acute oral toxicity for CP-4 and its metabolites. Utilizing a regional atmospheric chemical transport model, combined with observation-based estimates of atmospheric nitrogen deposition fluxes and riverine nitrogen inputs, we investigate the contribution of atmospheric Nr deposition to the fifth largest freshwater lake located in eastern China, i.e., the Chaohu Lake which is facing frequent outbreaks of algal bloom. The emission factors and characteristics of pollutants from river vessels are critical for understanding the environmental impact of ship emissions, particularly in inland waterways. However, research gaps remain regarding emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and intermediate-volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) from river vessels. In this study, we collected and analyzed organic vapor emissions, including non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHCs), oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) and IVOCs, from three river vessels under different operating conditions. The results show that the average emission factors of NMHCs, and IVOCs from river vessels are significantly higher than those from ocean-going vessels. Inland waterways' proximity to residential areas increases the risk of pollutant transport to urban environments, heightening the importance of managing river vessel emissions. Notably, older auxiliary engines displayed higher organic vapor emissions compared to main engines, underscoring the need for better control measures for aging engines. By analyzing the emission characteristics of organic vapors from river vessels, it was found that, unlike other pollution sources where C12 n-alkanes are the major contributors of IVOCs, the contributions of C12-C15 n-alkanes in river vessel exhaust are similar, with C14 n-alkane having the highest contribution. OVOCs constituted more than 50% to ozone formation potentials of organic vapors, while IVOCs were responsible for over 90% of the secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. Bisphenol A (BPA, 4,4'-(propane-2,2-diyl)diphenol) is a common plasticizer that is very widespread in the environment and is also found at significant concentrations in the global oceans, due to contamination by plastics. Here we show that triplet sensitization is an important degradation pathway for BPA in natural surface waters, which could prevail if the water dissolved organic carbon is above 2-3 mg C L -1 . Bromide levels as per seawater conditions have the potential to slow down BPA photodegradation, a phenomenon that could not be offset by reaction of BPA with Br 2 (second-order reaction rate constant of (2.54 ± 0.09) × 10 •- (second-order reaction rate constant of (2.54 ± 0.09) × 10 8  M -1 ). Ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry revealed that the presence of inorganic salts (NaCl and NaBr) markedly increased the complexity of the observed CHO product compounds formed upon photosensitized degradation of BPA. The obtained results suggest that bisphenols can be efficiently removed by photosensitized reactions and generate higher number of oligomers and polyaromatic compounds in the sea surface and liquid water of marine aerosols compared to freshwaters and/or dilute cloud-water. Considering that polyaromatic compounds absorb solar actinic radiation, these results suggest that inorganic salts could significantly affect the photosensitized degradation of bisphenols and consequently influence the light-absorbing properties of marine aerosols and, ultimately, the Earth's radiative balance.-1 ). The fluorinated bisphenol A (2,2-bis[4-hydroxyphenyl]propane, BPA) substitute bisphenol AF (BPAF) could be more persistent and toxic than BPA, but little is known about its environmental fate. In this study, we established a co-metabolic BPAF-degrading bacterial enrichment culture with BPA as the growth substrate. BPAF degradation by the enrichment culture was dependent on BPA, and BPAF could be eliminated to below the detection limit with successive additions of BPA. BPAF was mainly degraded via phenolic ring hydroxylation and sequential ring cleavage, which are minor BPA transformation pathway. Conjugated BPAF products were also identified based on the characteristic CF 3 - fragment and were found to accumulate during BPAF degradation. Sphingopyxis was the key BPA and BPAF degrader in the aerobic enrichment cultures, which was the most abundant genera in only BPA-added and BPA and BPAF-added cultures and was proven to be able to degrade BPA and BPAF by isolation. The aerobic co-metabolic BPAF degrading community also contain non-BPA and BPAF degraders, such as Pandoraea , which may play a supporting role in the community.
