Abstract

Guangdong Kelon, the largest refrigerator manufacturer in China, has seen strong growth, with sale trebling since 1993. It hopes to maintain its rapid growth rate in 1998, even though economic conditions in China have become more difficult. It has been careful to focus on refrigerators, avoiding the diversification which has caused problems for other Chinese manufacturers. However, it has been prepared to take risks abroad, and in 1997 reached a deal to supply US importer Avanti. It is now planning to merge with nearby air conditioner manufacturer Huabao.
