Hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic components in pyrolysis bio-oil is considered to be a potential strategy for producing renewable aromatic chemicals. The key issue of this process is the establishment of an effective catalytic system that can cleave the CAr–O bonds without affecting the aromatic structure. To achieve this goal, an efficient heterogeneous catalyst with solid acid support (WOx/ZrO2) and active metal (Ru) was prepared in this study. The Ru–WOx/ZrO2 catalyst can effectively convert model phenolic compounds into aromatic hydrocarbons. For a mixed phenolic sample, the conversion to and selectivity for arenes were all around 90%. The good selectivity was proved to be strongly related to the surface adsorption and acid properties of the catalyst as well as the reaction pathway. Lignin is the most abundant and renewable resources for production of natural aromatics. In this paper, new bimetallic catalytic system of Ru and Ni supported onto nitrogen-doped activated carbon (Ru-Ni-AC/N) was developed and its performances on hydrogenolysis of lignin model compounds under mild reaction conditions (1.0 MPa, 230 °C, in aqueous) were investigated. The results indicate that Ru-Ni-AC/N was a highly active, selective and stable catalyst for the conversion of lignin model compounds into aromatics, e.g. phenol, benzene and their derivatives. As verified by BET, XRD, HRTEM, XPS, H2-TPR and ICP-MS, the strong synergistic effects between i) Ru and Ni and ii) metals and N-groups were contributed to its excellent aromatics selectivity. What’s more, the introduction of electron rich N atoms on AC was beneficial to the stabilization of metal particles, which greatly enhanced the durability of the catalyst.

The advantage of selectivity for coal tar extraction can be obtained by using the solubility parameter of Hansen theory as a guide. However, most of the Hansen solubility parameters (dispersion contributions, δd; polarity contributions, δp; hydrogen bonding contributions, δhb) of coal tar components (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs) were inadequate. This study estimated the Hansen solubility parameters of naphthalene, acenaphthene, anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluoranthene from coal tar by applying a new approach regulated by turbidimetric titration and a calculating program based on the method of exhaustion. The extended Hansen approach was used to verify the new approach and evaluate the solubility of the six PAH components in different solvents. The selectivity of organic solvent extraction for separating non-aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and polar components in low-temperature coal tar was enhanced by applying the Hansen Solubility Parameters theory. The relationship between solubility parameter “distance” ( R a ) and solubility was obtained by turbidimetric titration, thus allowing an approximate comparison of dissolving properties between different solvents and the typical model compound (solute). A modified dissolving model in terms of the Hansen solubility sphere was established in order to select the extraction solvent. In practice, the low-temperature coal tar was successfully divided into three parts (i.e., enriching non-aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and polar components) by a three-step extraction-precipitation process at 298 K and 1 atm. Experimental results demonstrated a high correlation with the estimation made by the ellipsoidal model. The mass percentage of non-aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and polar components in their separation products were all ca. 90 wt.%. The mass percentages of the three products in total feedstock were around 12%, 46% and 36%, respectively. The mass loss during the entire separation process was from 4.5% to 6.0%.

This study aims to systematically illustrate the mechanism of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and modification on the coal liquefaction residue (CLR) and to identify the evolution and characteristics of the mesophase produced from the carbonization of SFE extracts. Results show that the extraction performance of SFE and the properties of the mesophase precursor were strongly dependent upon the selection of operating conditions and solvents. The SFE process using acetone and isopropanol presented excellent extraction performance, owning to the effect of solvent polarity on the degradation or supercritical reaction, achieving their respective CLR extraction yields of 45.85 and 30.12 wt %, while an extraction yield of 53.78 wt % was attained when using benzene, benefiting from its strong affinity to condensed aromatic hydrocarbons. A supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) process for separating components in a coal tar distillate was conducted. Two empirical equations were adopted to estimate the extraction yield (indicator for dissolving capacities) and concentration of each major component in the extraction product (indicator for selectivity). Experiments arranged by uniform design have been performed to verify the formulas and obtain the model constants. The experiments were carried out under the conditions of 490–600 K and 3.5–9.0 MPa, with supercritical n-pentane being a solvent. The results have demonstrated that most of the nonpolar components can be completely extracted by supercritical n-pentane, while the components with significant polarities cannot be easily dissolved in the solvent, and thus, a high dissolving temperature (600 K) was needed. A novel metabolite 1, named xyloketal G, was isolated from cultures of marine derived mangrove fungus Xylaria sp. 2508. Its structure was elucidated by analysis of spectroscopic data.

A novel cyclic peptide containing an allenic ether of a N-(p-hydroxycinnamoyl)amide, and two aromatic allenic ethers were isolated from the endothytic fungus Xylaria sp. from the South China Sea. Their structures were determined by analysis of spectroscopic data, mainly 2D NMR experiments.

Penicillazine (1) is a new compound with both quinolone and 4H-5,6-dihydro-1,2-oxazine ring systems that was isolated from a culture of the marine fungus Penicillium sp. (strain #386). Its structure was elucidated using spectroscopic methods, primarily 2D NMR techniques, and was confirmed by an X-ray diffraction analysis. Variations in the 1H NMR spectrum of penicillazine (1) were observed over a 65°C temperature range.

To investigate the antioxidative effects of 323-A and 323-B, two isomers extracted from the metabolites of cultured marine fungus, Halorosellinia oceanicum 323 in vitro.NADH-PMS-NBT system was used to produce superoxide free radical (O2*-), EDTANa2-Fe(II)-H2O2 system to generate hydroxyl free radical (*OH), H2O2 to stimulate oxidative hemolysis of erythrocytes of rats, Cys-Fe2+ to induce malondialdehyde (MDA) production in homogenates, and ferrous-ascorbic acid system to increase the turbidity of mitochondria suspension in the liver of rats. And the antioxidative activities of 323-A and 323-B were studied.323-A and 323-B not only scavenge O2*- and *OH produced by the experimental systems directly, but also inhibit H2O2 stimulated oxidative hemolysis of erythrocytes of rats, depress MDA production in homogenates induced by Cys-Fe2+ system, and reduce the turbidity of mitochondria suspension in the liver of rats increased by ferrous-ascorbic acid system in vitro.323-A and 323-B showed comprehensive cleaning actions on free radicals and protective effects on the functions of tissues and cells against oxidative lesion. The results suggested that the marine microorganic metabolites might be a novel and profound source of antioxidative reagents.

Five unique metabolites, xyloketals A (1), B (2), C (3), D (4), and E (5), and the known 6 were isolated from mangrove fungus Xylaria sp. (no. 2508), obtained from the South China Sea. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction experiments. Xyloketal A is a ketal compound with a C(3) symmetry and xyloketals B-E are its analogues. It was found that xytoketal C slowly rearranged to xytoketal B in DMSO-d(6)() solution at room temperature. Xyloketal A exhibited the activity of inhibiting acetylcholine esterase.
