- Abstract
[EN] This study aims to identify whether there is a base of Andalusians who believe in conspiracies and to know their sociological and political profile. On the other hand, it wants to connect these beliefs with their free time and media consumption patterns as well as with the sources they handle nowadays to access information and the trust or credibility that both classical media and social media (social networking and internet platforms) arouse in them. The data come from a survey realized in November 2017 from the fifth wave of the Citizen Panel for Social Research in Andalusia (PACIS). The Panel is an initiative of Advanced Social Studies Institute (IESA-CSIC). A total of 1.103 people over 18 years of age participated in this study: 827 answered by internet (self-administered web questionnaire) and 276 were interviewed by telephone to cover sociodemographic profiles less inclined to internet use., [ES] Este estudio pretende identificar si existe una base de andaluces que cree en conspiraciones y conocer su perfil sociológico y político.

This article reviews the international bibliography on big data. Comparatively, it explores the evolution, characteristics and themes of the research on this topic that falls within Anthropology, Sociology and Social Work. Quantitative methods are used for the description. Also, we employed an analytical strategy of unsupervised machine learning to identify and group the main themes of the articles. The results confirm that interest in big data has reached sociology before anthropology or social work. Likewise, inter and multidisciplinary publications on big data in these disciplines are highlighted. Also, from the topic modeling analysis, 13 clusters emerged. The most important were those corresponding to publications on social networks, epistemology, methodology and implications of big data, big data and society, health, and machine learning., Grupo de investigación Antropología y Filosofía (SEJ-126). This paper was presented at the 4th International Conference ILIS – International Lab for Innovative Social Research, June 8-9, 2023 [https://www.labilis.org/2023/04/22/4th-international-conference-ilis/]. In this communication, we explore different [viral, highly spread] case studies where LGBTIQ+ people receive support or rejection in social media. We aim to identify the main discourses, networks, and communities, pro- and against LGBTIQ+ people, and look for patterns in communication when support or hate is produced. The paper is part of the I+D+i Project titled "Conspiracy Theories and Hate Speech Online: Comparison of Patterns in Narratives and social networks about COVID-19, immigrants, refugees, and LGBTI people [NON-CONSPIRA-HATE!]", PID2021-123983OB-I00, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ and by "ERDF A way of making Europe." This paper was presented at the International Conference "Genders, Sexualities and Diversities" (Universidad de Huelva, April 19, 2023). In this communication, we explore, through different case studies, how sometimes LGBTIQ+ people are supported in the contexts of various events, demonstrations, or mobilizations in the streets (as is the case of International LGBT+ Pride Day or Women's International Day). Other times LGBTIQ+ people are recipients of online hate speech or different conspiracy theories in other scenarios, for example, in films, series, videogames, etc. It is possible to find online narratives about LGBTIQ+ people in different social networks that go from the more positive pole (support, solidarity, or even outrage when LGTBI people are rejected or recipients of hate crime) to the more negative one (disseminating hate, fake news or conspiracy theories). These narratives take place in different contexts: from street to screens. The paper is part of the I+D+i Project titled "Conspiracy Theories and Hate Speech Online: Comparison of Patterns in Narratives and social networks about COVID-19, immigrants, refugees, and LGBTI people [NON-CONSPIRA-HATE!]", PID2021-123983OB-I00, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ and by "ERDF A way of making Europe." (https://eseis.es/investigacion/discursos-de-odio/discursos-odio-tc). It has also been made possible thanks to the MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and by "ESF Investing in your future" in Spain, which funds a Predoctoral Grant for University Teacher Training (FPU20/02848). We also thank for the support of our research group: "Estudios Sociales E Intervención Social" (GrupoESEIS), and the research center "Pensamiento Contemporáneo e Innovación para el Desarrollo Social" (COIDESO), both of the University of Huelva., Este trabajo fue presentado en el Congreso Internacional "Genders, Sexualities and Diversities" (Universidad de Huelva, 19 de abril de 2023). - Abstract
At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multinational data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social and Moral Psychology of COVID-19 (N = 51,404) to test the predictive efficacy of constructs from social, moral, cognitive, and personality psychology, as well as socio-demographic factors, in the attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic. The results point to several valuable insights. Internalized moral identity provided the most consistent predictive contribution—individuals perceiving moral traits as central to their self-concept reported higher adherence to preventive measures. Similar results were found for morality as cooperation, symbolized moral identity, self-control, open-mindedness, and collective narcissism, while the inverse relationship was evident for the endorsement of conspiracy theories. However, we also found a non-neglible variability in the explained variance and predictive contributions with respect to macro-level factors such as the pandemic stage or cultural region. Overall, the results underscore the importance of morality-related and contextual factors in understanding adherence to public health recommendations during the pandemic.

- Abstract
Understanding collective behaviour is an important aspect of managing the pandemic response. Here the authors show in a large global study that participants that reported identifying more strongly with their nation reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies in the context of the pandemic.Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics., John Templeton Foundation (JTF); Narodowe Centrum Nauki (National Science Centre); UK Research & Innovation (UKRI); Medical Research Council UK (MRC); Economic Social Research Council Impact Acceleration Award; Economic Social Research Council Impact Acceleration Award; University of Oxford; Gouvernement du Canada Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada); Agentura na Podporu Vyskumu a Vyvoja (Slovak Research and Development Agency); Austrian Science Fund (FWF); Universitat Wien (University of Vienna); Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan (Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan); Aarhus Universitets Forskningsfond (Aarhus University Research Foundation); Swedish Research Council; Carlsberg Foundation; Ministarstvo Prosvete, Nauke i Tehnolokog Razvoja (Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia); NOMIS Stiftung (NOMIS Foundation); National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); UK Research & Innovation (UKRI), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC); French National Research Agency (ANR); German Research Foundation (DFG); Gouvernement du Canada | Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (Conseil de Recherches en Sciences Naturelles et en Genie du Canada); HKUST IEMS research grant project, funded by EY; Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education); Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation | Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development); Research Council of Norway through its Centres of Excellence Scheme; Institute of Social Sciences Ivo Pilar; J. - Abstract
People differ in their general tendency to endorse conspiracy theories (that is, conspiracy mentality). Previous research yielded inconsistent findings on the relationship between conspiracy mentality and political orientation, showing a greater conspiracy mentality either among the political right (a linear relation) or amongst both the left and right extremes (a curvilinear relation). We revisited this relationship across two studies spanning 26 countries (combined N = 104,253) and found overall evidence for both linear and quadratic relations, albeit small and heterogeneous across countries. We also observed stronger support for conspiracy mentality among voters of opposition parties (that is, those deprived of political control). Nonetheless, the quadratic effect of political orientation remained significant when adjusting for political control deprivation. We conclude that conspiracy mentality is associated with extreme left- and especially extreme right-wing beliefs, and that this non-linear relation may be strengthened by, but is not reducible to, deprivation of political control.

This work examines the relationship between the use of social networks and the extent to which populations support certain conspiracy theories, within the context of a Spanish region. Results suggest an association between a higher level of social network use and an increased degree of support for at least 3 of the 4 considered conspiracy theories. Multivariate analysis also reveals that social networking is significant in all cases, but certain sociodemographic, political and psychosocial variables are involved and may play a specific role in each considered case. It has been concluded that follow-up and additional studies are necessary to ensure a greater understanding of this relationship.

- Abstract
Research suggests that belief in conspiracy theories (CT) stems from basic psychological mechanisms and is linked to other belief systems (e.g. religious beliefs). While previous research has extensively examined individual and contextual variables associated with CT beliefs, it has not yet investigated the role of culture. In the current research, we tested, based on a situated cultural cognition perspective, the extent to which culture predicts CT beliefs. Using Hofstede’s model of cultural values, three nation-level analyses of data from 25,19 and 18 countries using different measures of CT beliefs (Study 1, N = 5,323; Study 2a, N= 12,255; Study 2b, N = 30,994) revealed positive associations between Masculinity, Collectivism and CT beliefs. A cross-sectional study among US citizens (Study 3, N= 350), using individual-level measures of Hofstede’s values, replicated these findings. A meta-analysis of correlations across studies corroborated the presence of positive links between CT beliefs, Collectivism, r=.31, 95%CI=[.15; .47] and Masculinity, , r=.39, 95%CI=[.18; .59]. Our results suggest that in addition to individual-differences and contextual variables, cultural factors also play an important role in shapingCT beliefs.

- Abstract
This work examines the relationship between the use of social networks and the extent to which populations support certain conspiracy theories, within the context of a Spanish region. Results suggest an association between a higher level of social network use and an increased degree of support for at least 3 of the 4 considered conspiracy theories. Multivariate analysis also reveals that social networking is significant in all cases, but certain sociodemographic, political and psychosocial variables are involved and may play a specific role in each considered case.

In this article, based on a literature review on the publications in international scientific journals on migrations and big data as well as specifically on migrations and Twitter, as a specific social media, we try to identify what type of research on migrations is currently being published based on data that comes from these sources. And, particularly, we are interested in identifying the methods, research techniques and type of software that are handled in these works, from the perspective of three key moments in the research on social media or big data: extraction, processing, and analysis. Our review is developed taking into account what was published in the last 5 years that was included in ProQuest, Scopus and Web of Science databases, which comprise thousands of journals, books, doctoral theses, etc. of a multidisciplinary nature. The results suggest that there are still few publications on big data and Twitter that address migration processes, in relation to other issues. In terms of methodological strategies, techniques and software, the articles we have found range from the most artisan to the most sophisticated, in this case, with publications that are usually lead by scientists who have a certain background in computing.

Artículo publicado en la revista: Culture e Studi del Sociale - Vol. 5(1), Special/2020: Life in Time of COVID-19. Disasters, Resilience, and Future. Número completo monográfico sobre COVID-19: http://www.cussoc.it/index.php/journal. Artículo en: http://www.cussoc.it/index.php/journal/article/view/133, This paper reflects on the force of the war metaphor primarily in Spain and the U.S. Examples from other countries are included. Methodologically, it utilizes the literature (journals and newspapers) and Twitter research. The paper addresses the impact and pervasiveness of English language translations in electronic communications. A bird’s eye view of how the war metaphor spread during the pandemic is presented. Additionally, the paper discusses idiosyncratic differences, cultures and histories in an Anglo-Saxon country and a Latin one. The topic of how leaders in different countries used the war metaphor to regulate the activities of citizens and manage their own political realities is reviewed. The situation of immigrants during the pandemic is discussed. The paper includes manifestations of those differences in celebrations, and mourning relating to the pandemic. Recommendations for future research on the war metaphor and its effects on solidarity and the economy of nations are put forward.

The research on what happens on the Internet often brings us closer to studies at the frontier of knowledge. This article is part of the transdisciplinary space of Computational Sociology and Social Sciences. It pretends to present the current development of research referred to as Social Big Data. It describes methodological processes typical in this field where social media on the Internet are the primary data source. Along with this description, it highlights some of the advantages, limitations, and challenges for research in this field, closely linked to methodological and technical advances made in other sciences. The text introduces Social Big Data's conceptual specificity as a confluence of social media, data analysis, and massive data. Then, we explore essential changes in the research process in this field and advances in working with social big data in areas of artificial intelligence such as machine learning, artificial neural networks, and deep learning, which are aligned with social sciences that tend to predictions. We then argue about the relevance for Sociology and other sciences to advance in an approach based on mixed methods in the Social Big Data area, rethinking the micro-macro link in this field of study. Through a case study [on the negationist social movement in Twitter in Spain during the COVID-19 pandemics], we also illustrate some potentials and limitations of this type of research, which will allow us to outline some of the methodological challenges that experts could incorporate into a research agenda in this area. Social Big Data and Computational Sociology and Social Sciences research offer directions of great interest to the Sociology of the coming years in which exceptional progress can be made in the development of transdisciplinarity and hybridization in science, enriching them. Funding: IESA-CSIC, 5th Wave of the Citizen Panel for Social Research in Andalusia (http://www.iesa.csic.es/blog/?p=2435)., This research was conducted as part of the 5th Wave of the Citizen Panel for Social Research in Andalusia, PIE 201710E018 [Panel Ciudadano PACIS, IESA-CSIC, www.panelpacis.net]. Our work is based on the administration of a survey to a representative sample of Andalusians. The sample was composed by 1,103 participants. The survey universe of this research was defined as all individual residents in Andalusia aged 18 or over. For the data collection, the sample was selected from among the individuals who are part of the PACIS panel. The objectives of this Executive Report are, specifically to identify if Andalusians have generic beliefs in conspiracies, to identify if Andalusians share and support specific beliefs about some conspiracies that have been divulged, with left, right and neutral orientations, and to find out the degree of extension of these beliefs in conspiracies in Andalusia, that is, how many people are estimated to believe in unfounded information. This executive report is part of the work developed within the framework of the research project: “Teorías de la conspiración y desinformación” [Conspiracy Theories and Disinformation], which won a competition to conduct a survey on this topic in the 5th Wave of the Citizen Panel for Social Research in Andalusia (EP-1707, PIE 201710E018, IESA/CSIC, www.panelpacis.net). Furthermore, this work falls under the COST Action (H2020) on “Comparative Analysis of Conspiracy Theories” (COMPACT, 2016-2020), funded by the European Union’s Framework Programme Horizon 2020. From this COST Action emerge the Project PiCOM, Political Ideology and Conspiracy Mentality”, in which this report is framed.
