Abstract

The Benevento Province (southern Italy) has been historically affected by soil erosion and ground deformation (i.e. landslides; Revellino et alii, 2019), as testified by documents and reports which describe damage scenario, social effects, surveys and measures carried out. Revellino et alii (2010) highlighted as the landslide index, defined as the ratio of areas affected by landslides over total areas, reaches up to 90%. Earth flows make up about 46% of these landslides, involving structurally complex geologic formations and often responsible for damaging human infrastructures (e.g. roads and service lines; Guerriero et alii, 2016; Maresca et alii, 2022). As a result, the province has widespread problems in management of the landslide hazard, due to the activation (and reactivation) of phenomena connected to both rainfall and seismic events. In order to reconstruct state of activity maps for the Benevento Province, a multitemporal analysis of multiplatform satellite data was carried out, with a resolution of cells of 20×20 m. In particular, PSInSAR (ERS 1&2 for the time-span 1992-2000, ENVISAT for 2002-2010, and RADARSAT for 2003-2007) and ISBAS data (Sentinel-1 for 2017-2020), were first treated by a grid-based approach to uniform the PS data and subsequently, by a multiplatform approach defining weighted average velocity (VWA) maps on the base of the extent of the area with data availability. Finally, a multiplatform activity-matrix approach allowed the definition of landslide activity maps based on a velocity threshold of ± 3 mm/y, derived by VWA maps. Specifically, velocity threshold allowed to discriminate for each cell of the analyzed area i) stable cells (velocities between ± 3 mm/y), ii) unstable cells (velocities greater than ± 3 mm/y), iii) cells with no data (unclassified). The multiplatform activity-matrix approach at provincial scale was used to identify and analyze unstable area (hotspots), currently involved in active deformation processes. Among them, the Paupisi municipality (Benevento Province) was identified as critical for the involvement of built-up areas and infrastructures in landslide deformation processes. For that reason, Paupisi area was selected as study case and a detailed analysis of the PS distribution as well as reconstruction and evaluation of deformation trend were carried out. Abstract

The boreal forest of the northern hemisphere represents one of the world's largest ecozones and contains nearly one third of the world's intact forests and terrestrially stored carbon. Long-term variations in temperature and precipitation have been implied in altering carbon cycling in forest soils, including increased fluxes to receiving waters. In this study, we use a simple hydrologic model and a 40-year dataset (1971–2010) of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from two pristine boreal lakes (ELA, Canada) to examine the interactions between precipitation and landscape-scale controls of DOC production and export from forest catchments to surface waters. Our results indicate that a simplified hydrologically-based conceptual model can enable the long-term temporal patterns of DOC fluxes to be captured within boreal landscapes. Reconstructed DOC exports from forested catchments in the period 1901–2012 follow largely a sinusoidal pattern, with a period of about 37 years and are tightly linked to multi-decadal patterns of precipitation. By combining our model with long-term precipitation estimates, we found no evidence of increasing DOC transport or in-lake concentrations through the 20th century. Highlights: Rainfall is a driving force of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in lacustrine systems. We derive a parsimonious model of the hydro-climatic forcing of DOC. We analyze long-term hydrologic controls of DOC in two pristine boreal lakes (Canada). The model did not reveal increasing in-lake DOC concentrations through the 20th century.

Abstract

Changes in the spatial and temporal patterns of extreme rainfall may have important effects on the magnitude and timing of rainfall erosivity, which in turn lead to even severe soil degradation phenomena. The Mediterranean belt is characterized by strong climatic variability and specific seasonal features, where dry periods are often interrupted by pulsing storms. Identifying the thresholds associated with extreme rainfall events is among the most important challenges for this region. To discern the spatial patterns of rainfall erosivity hazard in the Rhone region (eastern France), this study establishes thresholds in the power of rainstorms. An indicator Kriging approach was employed for computing probability maps of the annual rainfall erosivity exceeding the threshold of 1800 MJ mm ha−1 h−1, the latter being twice greater than the standard deviation. The interdecadal spatial patterns of hazard were assessed for recent decades (1991–2010) and the precedents ones (1961–1990). Climate fluctuations of rainfall erosivity revealed possible signals of increased storminess hazard across the region in recent times. We also discussed changes in the rainfall erosivity hazard forcing as related to climatic changes in daily rain rate, especially in autumn when the erosivity is likely affected by more intense storminess occurring across the southern part of the Rhone region.

Abstract

Background Comparison of toxicogenomic data facilitates the identification of deregulated gene patterns and maximizes health risk prediction in human. Results Here, we performed phenotypic anchoring on the effects of acute exposure to low-grade polluted groundwater using mouse and zebrafish. Also, we evaluated two windows of chronic exposure in mouse, starting in utero and at the end of lactation. Bioinformatic analysis of livers microarray data showed that the number of deregulated biofunctions and pathways is higher after acute exposure, compared to the chronic one. It also revealed specific profiles of altered gene expression in all treatments, pointing to stress response/mitochondrial pathways as major players of environmental toxicity. Of note, dysfunction of steroid hormones was also predicted by bioinformatic analysis and verified in both models by traditional approaches, serum estrogens measurement and vitellogenin mRNA determination in mice and zebrafish, respectively. Conclusions In our report, phenotypic anchoring in two vertebrate model organisms highlights the toxicity of low-grade pollution, with varying susceptibility based on exposure window. The overlay of zebrafish and mice deregulated pathways, more than single genes, is useful in risk identification from chemicals implicated in the observed effects.
