Background: One of the emerging new treatments for chronic wounds is the use of autologous platelet-rich plasma. However, there is little experience with this kind of treatment as well as limited proof of its effectiveness.Aim: The aim of this study was to gain further information about the benefits of platelet-richplasma in chronic wounds.Materials and methods: Thirteen patients with 14 chronic wounds were enrolled in an open label prospective study. The wounds included had not shown signs of epithelialization over a period of four weeks despite treatment of underlying causes and standard local wound care.Results: After treatment with platelet-rich plasma, 50% of the wounds had healed, 35.7% had reduced in size and 14.2% were unchanged in terms of area and condition. Recurrencies were not observed during the follow-up period of an average of 34.5 weeks (range 6,5 weeks-52 weeks).Conclusion: The use of autologous platelet-rich plasma should be reserved for treatment of recalcitrant wounds where there is lack of improvement despite treatment of underlying causes and good local wound care. Background: There is a growing prevalence of nonhealing wounds and chronic diseases in society, and there is an associated need for wound management solutions that include the use of telemedicine. A broad spectrum of factors influences the planning and execution of interventions within telemedicine in chronic wound management, spanning organizations, technologies, and individuals, including professionals and patients. The Telemedicine and Ambulatory Wound Care Team (TELE-AMBUS) project applies a whole-system research approach to account for this spectrum of factors., Objective: The primary objective of this study was to explore and analyze the implementation and consequences of an outpatient wound management model, comprising 2 interconnected quality improvement interventions (ie, telemedicine and ambulatory wound care team) aimed at older and vulnerable patients with chronic wounds, across the specialist and primary health care sectors. Embedded in this objective is the aim to improve the competence levels of health care providers and, consequently, the service quality of outpatient wound management across specialist and primary health care services., Methods: This project examines the implementation and consequences of an outpatient wound management model through a combined process and economic evaluation research strategy. A sociotechnical system theory approach and multiple work package design support the examination. The project uses observations, conversations, interviews, and economic assessments to gather rich, in-depth insights and understanding on why and how the new wound management model contributes to a change or not compared with the traditional treatment model., Results: The project has been funded from 2021 to 2025. Baseline interviews have been conducted since April 2022 and concluded in January 2024. Fieldwork, including nonparticipant observations, semistructured interviews, and informal conversations, has been conducted since November 2022 and is expected to conclude in March 2025. In parallel and as part of the cost-effectiveness analyses, time usage data on the outpatient and regular clinical models are being gathered during the fieldwork., Conclusions: We applied a whole-system approach in multiple ways, that is, to design or inform our fieldwork and to explore, evaluate, and translate project findings into practice across services. To our knowledge, this approach has not been undertaken in telemedicine in chronic wound management literature and associated human factors and ergonomics research. Based on initially identified needs for further telemedicine (TM) and chronic wound management research, the objective of this article is twofold: to conduct a systematic review of existing knowledge on TM interventions in chronic wound management-including barriers and opportunities-across the specialist and primary care sectors, and to incorporate the review findings into a system framework that can be further developed and validated through empirical data. We conclude that there is a pressing need for broader and more comprehensive empirical explorations into quality improvement and integration of TM in chronic wound management, including using system frameworks that can capture cross-sector system perspectives and associated implications. Of practical consideration, we suggest that the design and execution of TM improvement interventions and associated research projects should be conducted in close cooperation with managers and practitioners knowledgeable about barriers and opportunities that can influence the implementation of important interventions within chronic wound management., (© 2022 The Authors. Background: The development of skin cancer, especially squamous cell carcinoma, is a well-known but rare and often under-recognised complication of chronic wounds and longstanding scar tissue. These skin cancers, known as Marjolin's ulcer, are more aggressive in nature than similar cutaneous cancers of different etiology, with a higher rate of local recurrence and an increased metastatic potential., Case Presentation: Our patient suffered severe trauma to his left leg and foot in a car accident during childhood and underwent extensive reconstruction. In the years leading up to today the left foot has been lymphedematous, with recurring sinuses and ulcerations. He was now admitted due to a rapidly progressing and debilitating wound. During the first consultation the clinical findings led to suspicion of malignancy and osteomyelitis. The histopathologic examination from our biopsies could not rule out the presence of a highly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. MRI and bone biopsy revealed osteomyelitis., Interpretation: With few exceptions, the treatment of malignancy in chronic wounds and longstanding scar tissue is surgical. Early diagnostics, including biopsies, and intervention are instrumental to a favourable outcome. We present this case report alongside current literature in order to raise awareness on the topic.

To date, there have been nearly 100 papers published on metazoan parasites of Antarctic fishes, but there has not yet been any compilation of a species list of fish parasites for this large geographic area. Herein, we provide a list of all documented occurrences of monogenean, cestode, digenean, acanthocephalan, nematode, and hirudinean parasites of Antarctic fishes. The list includes nearly 250 parasite species found in 142 species of host fishes. It is likely that there are more species of fish parasites, which are yet to be documented from Antarctic waters.

Diabetic foot ulcers result from two specific complications: neuropathy and arteriosclerosis. Prompt and appropriate treatment of these often complicated wounds can help reduce complications that may lead to amputation. The most effective way to prevent these complications is to refer patients to interdisciplinary diabetic foot teams. The most important aspects of treatment are off-loading, treatment of infections, establishment of sufficient circulation, and local wound therapy. A specific examination is the basis for risk assessment. Prophylaxis and appropriate management of patients at risk of developing foot ulcers would contribute to reduce the number of amputations among diabetic patients.
