1. Quo vadis, smallholder forest landscape?: An introduction to the LPB-RAP model

Abstract

The impacts of the Anthropocene on climate and biodiversity pose societal and ecological problems that may only be solved by ecosystem restoration. Local to regional actions are required, which need to consider the prevailing present and future conditions of a certain landscape extent. Modeling approaches can be of help to support management efforts and to provide advice to policy making. We present stage one of the LaForeT-PLUC-BE model (Landscape Forestry in the Tropics–PCRaster Land Use Change–Biogeographic & Economic model; in short: LPB) and its thematic expansion module RAP (Restoration Areas Potentials). LPB-RAP is a high-resolution pixel-based scenario tool that relies on a range of explicit land use types (LUTs) to describe various forest types and the environment. It simulates and analyzes future landscape configurations under consideration of climate, population and land use change long-term. Simulated Land Use Land Cover Change (LULCC) builds on dynamic, probabilistic modeling incorporating climatic and anthropogenic determinants as well as restriction parameters to depict a sub-national regional smallholder-dominated forest landscape. The model delivers results for contrasting scenario settings by simulating without and with potential Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) measures. FLR potentials are depicted by up to five RAP-LUTs. The model builds on user-defined scenario inputs, such as the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) and Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP). Model application is here exemplified for the SSP2-RCP4.5 scenario in the time frame 2018–2100 on the hectare scale in annual resolution using Esmeraldas province, Ecuador, as a case study area. The LPB-RAP model is a novel, heuristic Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) tool for smallholder-dominated forest landscapes, supporting near-time top-down planning measures with long-term bottom-up modeling. 2. Non-linear MHD investigations of high-confinement regimes without type-I ELMs in ASDEX Upgrade and JT-60SA

Abstract

Large edge localised modes (ELMs) would cause an unacceptable reduction of material lifetime in future large tokamaks due to the significant amount of energy expelled from the magnetically confined region towards the plasma facing components. Thoroughly validated modelling of regimes devoid of large ELMs is crucial as it may then provide predictive insights prior to tokamak operation and design. This paper describes recent efforts pursued with the non-linear extended MHD code JOREK in the modelling of three scenarios without large ELMs: quiescent H-mode (QH-mode), quasi-continuous exhaust regime (QCE regime), and the enhanced D-alpha H-mode (EDA H-mode). For each of these regimes, the non-linear dynamics observed in the simulations are detailed and compared to experimental observations of the underlying instabilities of each regime (edge harmonic oscillation for QH-mode, small ELMs for QCE regime, and quasi-coherent mode for EDA H-mode). For QH-mode, the kink-peeling mode is found to govern the dynamics and a transition to a large ELM is obtained above the same density threshold as in the modelled experiment. For the QCE regime and EDA H-mode, resistive peeling–ballooning modes dominate and pedestal fluctuation frequencies correspond well to experimental observations. The dominant mechanisms for the excitation and suppression of these instabilities are presented and their influence on simulation dynamics is shown. Finally, predictive simulations of edge instabilities at different values of plasma resistivity in a 4.60 MA scenario with low edge safety factor in JT-60SA are presented.

4. Experimental investigation and validation of neutral beam current drive for ITER through ITPA Joint Experiments

Abstract

Joint experiments investigating the off-axis neutral beam current drive (NBCD) capability to be utilized for advanced operation scenario development in ITER were conducted in four tokamaks (ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), DIII-D, JT-60U and MAST) through the international tokamak physics activity (ITPA). The following results were obtained in the joint experiments, where the toroidal field, B t, covered 0.4-3.7 T, the plasma current, Ip, 0.5-1.2 MA, and the beam energy, Eb, 65-350 keV. A current profile broadened by off-axis NBCD was observed in MAST. In DIII-D and JT-60U, the NB driven current profile has been evaluated using motional Stark effect diagnostics and good agreement between the measured and calculated NB driven current profile was observed. In AUG (at low δ ∼ 0.2) and DIII-D, introduction of a fast-ion diffusion coefficient of Db ∼ 0.3-0.5 m2 s-1 in the calculation gave better agreement at high heating power (5 MW and 7.2 MW, respectively), suggesting anomalous transport of fast ions by turbulence. It was found through these ITPA joint experiments that NBCD related physics quantities reasonably agree with calculations (with Db = 0-0.5 m2 s-1) in all devices when there is no magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity except ELMs. Proximity of measured off-axis beam driven current to the corresponding calculation with Db = 0 has been discussed for ITER in terms of a theoretically predicted scaling of fast-ion diffusion that depends on Eb/Te for electrostatic turbulence or βt for electromagnetic turbulence. © 2011 IAEA, Vienna.

Abstract

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases.

Abstract

The development of small and no-ELM regimes for ITER is a high priority topic due to the risks associated with type-I ELMs. By considering non-linear extended magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak with the JOREK code, we probe a regime that avoids type-I ELMs completely, provided that the separatrix density is high enough. The dynamics of the pedestal in this regime are observed to be qualitatively similar to the so-called quasi-continuous exhaust regime in several ways. Repetitive type-I ELMs are substituted by roughly constant levels of outward transport, caused by peeling-ballooning modes (with dominant ballooning characteristics) which are localised in the last 5% of the confined region (in normalised poloidal flux). The simulated low triangularity plasma transitions to a type-I ELMy H-mode if the separatrix density is sufficiently reduced or if the input heating power is sufficiently increased. The stabilising factors that play a role in the suppression of the small ELMs are also investigated by analysing the simulations, and the importance of including diamagnetic effects in the simulations is highlighted. By considering a scan in the pedestal resistivity and by comparing the poloidal velocity of the modes to theoretical estimates for ideal and resistive modes, we identify the underlying instabilities as resistive peeling-ballooning modes. Decreasing the resistivity below experimentally-relevant conditions (i.e. going towards ideal MHD), the peeling-ballooning modes that constrain the pedestal below the type-I ELM stability boundary display sharply decreasing growth rates.

Abstract

The development of small and no-ELM regimes for ITER is a high priority topic due to the risks associated with type-I ELMs. By considering non-linear extended magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak with the JOREK code, we probe a regime that avoids type-I ELMs completely, provided that the separatrix density is high enough. The dynamics of the pedestal in this regime are observed to be qualitatively similar to the so-called quasi-continuous exhaust regime in several ways. Repetitive type-I ELMs are substituted by roughly constant levels of outward transport, caused by peeling-ballooning modes (with dominant ballooning characteristics) which are localised in the last 5% of the confined region (in normalised poloidal flux). The simulated low triangularity plasma transitions to a type-I ELMy H-mode if the separatrix density is sufficiently reduced or if the input heating power is sufficiently increased. The stabilising factors that play a role in the suppression of the small ELMs are also investigated by analysing the simulations, and the importance of including diamagnetic effects in the simulations is highlighted. By considering a scan in the pedestal resistivity and by comparing the poloidal velocity of the modes to theoretical estimates for ideal and resistive modes, we identify the underlying instabilities as resistive peeling-ballooning modes. Decreasing the resistivity below experimentally-relevant conditions (i.e. going towards ideal MHD), the peeling-ballooning modes that constrain the pedestal below the type-I ELM stability boundary display sharply decreasing growth rates.

Abstract

Injecting frozen deuterium pellets into an ELMy H-mode plasma is a well established scheme for triggering edge localized modes (ELMs) before they naturally occur. This paper presents non-linear simulations of spontaneous type-I ELMs and pellet-triggered ELMs in ASDEX Upgrade performed with the extended MHD code JOREK. A thorough comparison of the non-linear dynamics of these events is provided. In particular, pellet-triggered ELMs are simulated by injecting deuterium pellets into different time points during the pedestal build-up described in A Cathey et al (2020 Nuclear Fusion 60 124007). Realistic ExB and diamagnetic background plasma flows as well as the time dependent bootstrap current evolution are included during the build-up to accurately capture the balance between stabilising and destabilising terms for the edge instabilities. Dependencies on the pellet size and injection times are studied. The spatio-temporal structures of the modes and the resulting divertor heat fluxes are compared in detail between spontaneous and triggered ELMs. We observe that the premature excitation of ELMs by means of pellet injection is caused by a helical perturbation described by a toroidal mode number of n = 1. In accordance with experimental observations, the pellet-triggered ELMs show reduced thermal energy losses and a narrower divertor wetted area with respect to spontaneous ELMs. The peak divertor energy fluence is seen to decrease when ELMs are triggered by pellets injected earlier during the pedestal build-up.

Abstract

3D free boundary equilibrium computations have recently been used to model external kinks and edge harmonic oscillations (EHOs), comparing with linear MHD stability codes, and nonlinear analytic theory [Kleiner et al., Phys. Plasma Controlled Fusion 61, 084005 (2019)]. In this study, results of the VMEC equilibrium code are compared further with nonlinear reduced MHD simulations, using the JOREK code. The purpose of this investigation was to understand the extent to which the modeling approaches agree, and identify the important physical effects, which can modify the dynamics. For the simulated external kink, which is dominated by a single toroidal harmonic, good agreement is found when a large Lundquist number is used in the JOREK simulation, such that resistive effects are sub-dominant. Modeling EHOs where multiple toroidal harmonics are linearly unstable, the saturated perturbation observed can differ in the dominant toroidal harmonic. On the ideal timescale, a n = 2 EHO is observed in JOREK, while the saturated perturbation predicted by VMEC is a n = 1 mode. Extending simulations into timescales where resistive effects can play a role, similar n = 1 perturbations can be found. The coupling of different linearly unstable toroidal harmonics in the JOREK simulation broadens the magnetic energy spectrum and ergodises the plasma edge region, resulting in a more localized pressure perturbation. These effects are not observed in VMEC, because closed magnetic flux surfaces are enforced. Despite the sensitivity of JOREK results on the assumed resistivity, saturated states can be found using both approaches that are in reasonable agreement, even for this more advanced case. Abstract

Although the basic concept of a stellarator was known since the early days of fusion research, advances in computational technology have enabled the modeling of increasingly complicated devices, leading up to the construction of Wendelstein 7-X, which has recently shown promising results. This recent success has revived interest in the nonlinear 3D MHD modeling of stellarators in order to better understand their performance and operational limits. This study reports on the extension of the JOREK code to 3D geometries and on the first stellarator simulations carried out with it. The first simple simulations shown here address the classic Wendelstein 7-A stellarator using a reduced MHD model previously derived by us. The results demonstrate that stable full MHD equilibria are preserved in the reduced model: the flux surfaces do not move throughout the simulation and closely match the flux surfaces of the full MHD equilibrium. Furthermore, both tearing and ballooning modes were simulated, and the linear growth rates measured in JOREK are in reasonable agreement with the growth rates from the CASTOR3D linear MHD code. Abstract

Numerical calculations based on nonlinear two-fluid equations have been carried out to understand the sawtooth-like crashes of electron temperature observed in Wendelstein 7-X stellarator experiments with electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD). The application of ECCD leads to non-monotonic radial profiles of the safety factor q with two q = 1 surfaces in the plasma core region. Using input parameters similar to the experiment, numerical calculations show two types of crashes of the central electron temperature depending on the growth of the internal kink mode coupled to double tearing modes. When the distance between two equilibrium q = 1 surfaces is sufficiently large, the internal kink mode leads to a fast radial displacement of the hot core from the center to the region of the q = 1 surfaces. In agreement with experimental observation, this causes a full crash of central electron temperature in about 20–30 microseconds. When the distance between the two q = 1 surfaces is not large enough, partial crashes of the central electron temperature are found. During these crashes the hot core only temporally moves outwards. Then it moves back, because the double tearing mode perturbation leads to an increase of the minimum q value about one.

Abstract

A triggering mechanism responsible for the explosive onset of edge localised modes (ELMs) in fusion plasmas is identified by performing, for the first time, non-linear magnetohydrodynamic simulations of repetitive type-I ELMs. Briefly prior to the ELM crash, destabilising and stabilising terms are affected at different timescales by an increasingly ergodic magnetic field caused by non-linear interactions between the axisymmetric background plasma and growing non-axisymmetric perturbations. The separation of timescales prompts the explosive, i.e. faster than exponential, growth of an ELM crash which lasts ∼ 500 μ s . The duration and size of the simulated ELM crashes compare qualitatively well with type-I ELMs in ASDEX Upgrade. As expected for type-I ELMs, a direct proportionality between the heating power in the simulations and the ELM repetition frequency is obtained. The simulations presented here are a major step forward towards predictive modelling of ELMs and of the assessment of mitigation techniques in ITER and other future tokamaks.
