Search

The recent detection of the singular diamagnetism of Dirac electrons in a single graphene layer paved a new way of probing 2D quantum materials through the measurement of equilibrium orbital currents which cannot be accessed in usual transport experiments. Among the theoretical predictions is an intriguing orbital paramagnetism at saddle points of the dispersion relation. Here we present magnetisation measurements in graphene monolayers aligned on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)crystals. Beside the sharp diamagnetic McClure response at the Dirac point, we detect extra diamagnetic singularities at the satellite Dirac points (sDP) of the moir\'e lattice. Surrounding these diamagnetic satellite peaks, we also observe paramagnetic peaks located at the chemical potential of the saddle points of the Graphene moir\'e band structure and relate them to the presence of van Hove logarithmic singularities in the density of states. These findings reveal the long ago predicted anomalous paramagnetic orbital response in 2D systems when the Fermi energy is tuned to the vicinity of saddle points., Comment: main paper 6 pages 5 figures and supplementaray materials 18 pages and 14 figures

Second-order topological insulators are characterized by helical, non-spin-degenerate, one-dimensional states running along opposite crystal hinges, with no backscattering. Injecting superconducting pairs therefore entails splitting Cooper pairs into two families of helical Andreev states of opposite helicity, one at each hinge. Here we provide evidence for such separation via the measurement and analysis of switching supercurrent statistics of a crystalline nanoring of bismuth. Using a phenomenological model of two helical Andreev hinge modes, we find that pairs relax at a rate comparable to individual quasiparticles, in contrast with the much faster pair relaxation of non-topological systems. This constitutes a unique tell-tale sign of the spatial separation of topological helical hinges., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The electronic properties of graphene have been intensively investigated over the last decade, and signatures of the remarkable features of its linear Dirac spectrum have been displayed using transport and spectroscopy experiments. In contrast, the orbital magnetism of graphene, which is one of the most fundamental signature of the characteristic Berry phase of graphene's electronic wave functions, has not yet been measured in a single flake. In particular, the striking prediction of a divergent diamagnetic response at zero doping calls for an experimental test. Using a highly sensitive Giant Magnetoresistance sensor (GMR) we have measured the gate voltage-dependent magnetization of a single graphene monolayer encapsulated between boron nitride crystals. The signal exhibits a diamagnetic peak at the Dirac point whose magnetic field and temperature dependences agree with theoretical predictions starting from the work of Mc Clure \cite{McClure1956}. Our measurements open a new field of investigation of orbital currents in graphene and 2D topological materials, offering a new means to monitor Berry phase singularities and explore correlated states generated by combined effects of Coulomb interactions, strain or moir\'e potentials., Comment: 6 pages 5 figures and supplemental material

We demonstrate enhanced robustness of the supercurrent through graphene-based Josephson junctions in which strong spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) are induced. We compare the persistence of a supercurrent at high magnetic fields between Josephson junctions with graphene on hexagonal boron-nitride and graphene on WS$_2$, where strong SOIs are induced via the proximity effect. We find that in the shortest junctions both systems display signatures of induced superconductivity, characterized by a suppressed differential resistance at a low current, in magnetic fields up to 1 T. In longer junctions however, only graphene on WS$_2$ exhibits induced superconductivity features in such high magnetic fields, and they even persist up to 7 T. We argue that these robust superconducting signatures arise from quasi-ballistic edge states stabilized by the strong SOIs induced in graphene by WS$_2$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We have probed the superconducting proximity effect through long high-quality monocrystalline Ag nanowires, by realizing Josephson junctions of different lengths, with different superconducting materials. Thanks to the high number of junctions probed, both the contact resistance and electron diffusion constant could be determined, enabling a comparison of the measured critical current to theoretical expectation, over the entire regime from short to long diffusive junction. Although the length dependence of the critical current is as expected, the amplitude of the $R_{N}I_c$ product is smaller than predicted by theory. We also address the magnetic field dependence of the critical current. The quasi-gaussian decay of the critical current with field expected of a long narrow junction is observed for all superconducting contacts we used except for aluminum. We present the striking non-monotonous effect of field on the critical current of junctions with aluminum contacts, and analyze it in terms of improved quasiparticle thermalization by a magnetic field.

We report a systematic study on strong enhancement of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in graphene driven by transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Low temperature magnetotoransport measurements of graphene proximitized to different TMDs (monolayer and bulk WSe$_2$, WS$_2$ and monolayer MoS$_2$) all exhibit weak antilocalization peaks, a signature of strong SOI induced in graphene. The amplitudes of the induced SOI are different for different materials and thickness, and we find that monolayer WSe$_2$ and WS$_2$ can induce much stronger SOI than bulk ones and also monolayer MoS$_2$. The estimated spin-orbit (SO) scattering strength for the former reaches $\sim$ 10 meV whereas for the latter it is around 1 meV or less. We also discuss the symmetry and type of the induced SOI in detail, especially focusing on the identification of intrinsic and valley-Zeeman (VZ) SOI via the dominant spin relaxation mechanism. Demonstrating the topological protection of Andreev states in Josephson junctions is an experimental challenge. In particular the telltale $4\pi$ periodicity expected for the current phase relation of topological Josephson junctions has remained elusive, because of fast parity breaking processes. It was predicted that low temperature ac susceptibility measurements related to the current thermal noise could reveal the topological protection of quantum Spin Hall edge states \cite{Fu2009}, by probing their low energy Andreev spectrum.% of QSH-based Josephson junctions. We have performed such a microwave probing of the Andreev spectrum of a phase biased Josephson junction built around a bismuth nanowire, which was previously shown to host one-dimensional ballistic edge states. We find absorption peaks at the Andreev level crossings, whose temperature and frequency dependences point to protected topological crossings with an accuracy limited by the electronic temperature of our experiment., Comment: 10 pages 5 figures

The high tunability of the density of states of graphene makes it an ideal probe of quantum transport in different regimes. In particular, the supercurrent that can flow through a non-superconducting (N) material connected to two superconducting electrodes, crucially depends on the lenghth of the N relative to the superconducting coherence length. Using graphene as the N material we have investigated the full range of the superconducting proximity effect, from short to long diffusive junctions. By combining several S/graphene/S samples with different contacts and lengths, and measuring their gate-dependent critical currents ($ I_c $) and normal state resistance $ R_N $, we compare the product $eR_NI_c$ to the relevant energies, the Thouless energy in long junctions and the superconducting gap of the contacts in short junctions, over three orders of magnitude of Thouless energy. The experimental variations strikingly follow a universal law, close to the predictions of the proximity effect both in the long and short junction regime, as well as in the crossover region, thereby revealing the interplay of the different energy scales. Differences in the numerical coefficients reveal the crucial role played by the interfacial barrier between graphene and the superconducting electrodes, which reduces the supercurrent in both short and long junctions. Surprisingly the reduction of supercurrent is independent of the gate voltage and of the nature of the electrodes. A reduced induced gap and Thouless energy are extracted, revealing the role played by the dwell time in the barrier in the short junction, and an effective increased diffusion time in the long junction. We compare our results to the theoretical predictions of Usadel equations and numerical simulations which better reproduce experiments with imperfect NS interfaces.

Superconducting nanowires can be fabricated by decomposition of an organometallic gas using a focused beam of Ga ions. However, physical damage and unintentional doping often results from the exposure to the ion beam, motivating the search for a means to achieve similar structures with a beam of electrons instead of ions. This has so far remained an experimental challenge. We report the fabrication of superconducting tungsten nanowires by electron-beam-induced-deposition, with critical temperature of 2.0 K and critical magnetic field of 3.7 T, and compare them with superconducting wires made with ions. This work opens up new possibilities for the realization of nanoscale superconducting devices, without the requirement of an ion beam column., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We investigate proximity induced superconductivity in micrometer-long bismuth nanowires con- nected to superconducting electrodes with a high critical field. At low temperature we measure a supercurrent that persists in magnetic fields as high as the critical field of the electrodes (above 11 T). The critical current is also strongly modulated by the magnetic field. In certain samples we find regular, rapid SQUID-like periodic oscillations occurring up to high fields. Other samples ex- hibit less periodic but full modulations of the critical current on Tesla field scales, with field-caused extinctions of the supercurrent. These findings indicate the existence of low dimensionally, phase coherent, interfering conducting regions through the samples, with a subtle interplay between orbital and spin contributions. We relate these surprising results to the electronic properties of the surface states of bismuth, strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling, large effective g factors, and their effect on the induced superconducting correlations., Comment: 5 pages

Inducing magnetism in graphene holds great promises, such as controlling the exchange interaction with a gate electrode and generating exotic magnetic phases. Coating graphene with magnetic molecules or atoms has so far mostly lead to decreased graphene mobility. In the present work, we show that Pt-porphyrins adsorbed on graphene lead to an enhanced mobility and to gate-dependent magnetism. We report that porphyrins can be donor or acceptor, depending on graphene s initial doping. The porphyrins transfer charge and ionize around the charged impurities on graphene, decreasing the graphene doping and increasing its mobility. In addition, ionized porphyrins carry a magnetic moment. Using the sensitivity of mesoscopic transport to magnetism, in particular the superconducting proximity effect and conductance fluctuations, we explore the magnetic order induced in graphene by the interacting magnetic moments of the ionized porphyrins. Among the signatures of magnetism, we find two-terminal-magnetoresistance fluctuations with an odd component, a tell-tale sign of time reversal symmetry breaking at zero field, that does not exist in uncoated graphene sample. When graphene is connected to superconducting electrodes, the induced magnetism leads to a gate-voltage-dependent suppression of the supercurrent, modified magnetic interference patterns, and gate-voltage-dependent magnetic hysteresis. The magnetic signatures are greatest for long superconductor graphene superconductor junctions and for samples with the highest initial doping, compatible with a greater number of ionized and thus magnetic porphyrins. Our findings suggest that long-range magnetism is induced through graphene by the ionized porphyrins magnetic moment. This magnetic interaction is controlled by the density of carriers in graphene, a tunability that could be exploited in spintronic applications.

A mesoscopic hybrid Normal/ Superconducting (NS) ring is characterized by a dense Andreev spectrum with a flux dependent minigap. We measure the linear response to a high frequency flux, in a wide frequency range, with a multimode superconducting resonator. We find that the current response contains, beside the well known dissipation-less Josephson contribution, a large dissipative component. At high frequency compared to the minigap and low temperature we find that the dissipation is due to transitions above the minigap. In contrast, at lower frequency there is range of temperature for which dissipation is caused predominantly by the relaxation of the Andreev states' population.

We report in detail our experiments on the conduction of $\lambda$ DNA molecules over a wide range of temperature deposited across slits in a few nanometers thick platinum film. These insulating slits were fabricated using focused ion beam etching and characterized extensively using near field and electron microscopy. This characterization revealed the presence of metallic Ga nanoparticles inside the slits, as a result of the ion etching. After deposition of $\lambda$ DNA molecules, using a protocol that we describe in detail, some of the slits became conducting and exhibited superconducting fluctuations at low temperatures. We argue that the observed conduction was due to transport along DNA molecules, that interacted with the Ga nanoparticles present in the slit. At low temperatures when Ga becomes superconducting, induced superconductivity could therefore be observed. These results indicate that minute metallic particles can easily transfer charge carriers to attached DNA molecules and provide a possible reconciliation between apparently contradictory previous experimental results concerning the length over which DNA molecules can conduct electricity.

We investigate the superconducting proximity effect through graphene in the long diffusive junction limit, at low and high magnetic field. The interface quality and sample phase coherence lead to a zero resistance state at low temperature, zero magnetic field, and high doping. We find a striking suppression of the critical current near graphene\rq{}s charge neutrality point, which we attribute to specular reflexion of Andreev pairs at the interface of charge puddles. This type of reflexion, specific to the Dirac band structure, had up to now remained elusive. At high magnetic field the use of superconducting electrodes with high critical field enables the investigation of the proximity effect in the Quantum Hall regime. Although the supercurrent is not directly detectable in our two wire configuration, interference effects are visible which may be attributed to the injection of Cooper pairs into edge states., Comment: 10 pages, 17 figures. We have measured the critical current dependence on the magnetic flux of two long SNS junctions differing by the normal wire geometry. The samples are made by a Au wire connected to W contacts, via Focused Ion Beam assisted deposition. We could tune the magnetic pattern from the monotonic gaussian-like decay of a quasi 1D normal wire to the Fraunhofer-like pattern of a square normal wire. We explain the monotonic limit with a semiclassical 1D model, and we fit both field dependences with numerical simulations of the 2D Usadel equation. Furthermore, we observe both integer and fractional Shapiro steps. The magnetic flux dependence of the integer steps reproduces as expected that of the critical current Ic, while fractional steps decay slower with the flux than Ic., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have investigated the conduction over a wide range of temperature of $\lambda$ DNA molecules deposited across slits etched through a few nanometers thick platinum film. The slits are insulating before DNA deposition but contain metallic Ga nanoparticles, a result of focused ion beam etching. When these nanoparticles are superconducting we find that they can induce superconductivity through the DNA molecules, even though the main electrodes are non superconducting. A long phase coherent normal (N) wire between superconductors (S) is characterized by a dense phase dependent Andreev spectrum . We probe this spectrum in a high frequency phase biased configuration, by coupling an NS ring to a multimode superconducting resonator. We detect a dc flux and frequency dependent response whose dissipative and non dissipative components are related by a simple Debye relaxation law with a characteristic time of the order of the diffusion time through the N part of the ring. The flux dependence exhibits $h/2e$ periodic oscillations with a large harmonics content at temperatures where the Josephson current is purely sinusoidal. This is explained considering that the populations of the Andreev levels are frozen on the time-scale of the experiments., Comment: 5 pages,4 figures

We investigate conductance fluctuations as a function of carrier density $n$ and magnetic field in diffusive mesoscopic samples made from monolayer and bilayer graphene. We show that the fluctuations' correlation energy and field, which are functions of the diffusion coefficient, have fundamentally different variations with $n$, illustrating the contrast between massive and massless carriers. The field dependent fluctuations are nearly independent of $n$, but the $n$-dependent fluctuations are not universal and are largest at the charge neutrality point. We also measure the second order conductance fluctuations (mesoscopic rectification). Its field asymmetry, due to electron-electron interaction, decays with conductance, as predicted for diffusive systems., Comment: Panel c in figure 4 represented differently

Conducting nanowires possess remarkable physical properties unattainable in bulk materials. However our understanding of their transport properties is limited by the difficulty of connecting them electrically. In this Letter we investigate phototransport in both bulk silicon and silicon nanowires using a superconducting multimode resonator operating at frequencies between 0.3 and 3 GHz. We find that whereas the bulk Si response is mainly dissipative, the nanowires exhibit a large dielectric polarizability. This technique is contactless and can be applied to many other semiconducting nanowires and molecules. Our approach also allows to investigate the coupling of electron transport to surface acoustic waves in bulk Si and to electro-mechanical resonances in the nanowires.

Both transport $\tau_{tr}$ and elastic scattering times $\tau_{e}$ are experimentally determined from the carrier density dependence of the magnetoconductance of monolayer and bilayer graphene. Both times and their dependences in carrier density are found to be very different in the monolayer and the bilayer. However their ratio $\tau_{tr}/\tau_{e} $is found to be of the order of $1.5 $ in both systems and independent of the carrier density. These measurements give insight on the nature (neutral or charged) and spatial extent of the scattering centers. Comparison with theoretical predictions yields that the main scattering mechanism in our graphene samples could be due to strong scatterers of short range, inducing resonant scattering, a likely candidate being vacancies.

We have tuned in situ the proximity effect in a single graphene layer coupled to two Pt/Ta superconducting electrodes. An annealing current through the device changed the transmission coefficient of the electrode/graphene interface, increasing the probability of multiple Andreev reflections. Repeated annealing steps improved the contact sufficiently for a Josephson current to be induced in graphene., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

A two dimensional electron system without spatial inversion symmetry develops a sample specific dc voltage when exposed to a microwave radiation at low temperature. We investigate this photovoltaic (PV) effect, in the case where spatial symmetry is broken by an evanescent high-frequency potential. We measure the induced PV voltage in a ${\rm GaAs/Ga_{1-x}Al_{x}As}$ Hall bar at magnetic fields in the Tesla range. We find that in this regime the induced PV voltage is anti-symmetric with magnetic field, and exhibits regular Shubnikov-de Haas like oscillations. Our experimental results can be understood from a simple model, which describes the effect of stationary orbital currents caused by microwave driving.

The differential conductance in a suspended few layered graphene sample is fou nd to exhibit a series of quasi-periodic sharp dips as a function of bias at l ow temperature. We show that they can be understood within a simple model of dyn amical Coulomb blockade where energy exchanges take place between the charge carriers transmitted trough the sample and a dissipative electromagnetic envir onment with a resonant phonon mode strongly coupled to the electrons.

A rope of carbon nanotubes is constituted of an array of parallel single wall nanotubes with nearly identical diameters. In most cases the individual nanotubes within a rope have different helicities and 1/3 of them are metallic. In the absence of disorder within the tubes, the intertube electronic transfer is negligeable because of the longitudinal wave vector mismatch between neighboring tubes of different helicities. The rope can then be considered as a number of parallel independent ballistic nanotubes. On the other hand, the presence of disorder within the tubes favors the intertube electronic transfer. This is first shown using a very simple model where disorder is treated perturbatively inspired by the work in reference \cite{maarouf00}. We then present numerical simulations on a tight binding model of a rope. Disorder induced transverse delocalisation shows up as a spectacular increase of the sensitivity to the transverse boundary conditions in the presence of small disorder. This is accompanied by an increase of the longitudinal localisation length. Implications on the nature of electronic transport within a rope of carbon nanotubes are discussed., Comment: 7 pages 8 figures

We report the design and measurement of Superconducting/normal/superconducting (SNS) proximity DC squids in the long junction limit, i.e. superconducting loops interrupted by two normal metal wires roughly a micrometer long. Thanks to the clean interface between the metals, at low temperature a large supercurrent flows through the device. The dc squid-like geometry leads to an almost complete periodic modulation of the critical current through the device by a magnetic flux, with a flux periodicity of a flux quantum h/2e through the SNS loop. In addition, we examine the entire field dependence, notably the low and high field dependence of the maximum switching current. In contrast with the well-known Fraunhoffer-type oscillations typical of short wide junctions, we find a monotonous gaussian extinction of the critical current at high field. As shown in [15], this monotonous dependence is typical of long and narrow diffusive junctions. We also find in some cases a puzzling reentrance at low field. In contrast, the temperature dependence of the critical current is well described by the proximity effect theory, as found by Dubos {\it et al.} [16] on SNS wires in the long junction limit. The switching current distributions and hysteretic IV curves also suggest interesting dynamics of long SNS junctions with an important role played by the diffusion time across the junction., Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures

We investigate weak localization in metallic networks etched in a two dimensional electron gas between $25\:$mK and $750\:$mK when electron-electron (e-e) interaction is the dominant phase breaking mechanism. We show that, at the highest temperatures, the contributions arising from trajectories that wind around the rings and trajectories that do not are governed by two different length scales. This is achieved by analyzing separately the envelope and the oscillating part of the magnetoconductance. For $T\gtrsim0.3\:$K we find $\Lphi^\mathrm{env}\propto{T}^{-1/3}$ for the envelope, and $\Lphi^\mathrm{osc}\propto{T}^{-1/2}$ for the oscillations, in agreement with the prediction for a single ring \cite{LudMir04,TexMon05}. We have investigated electronic transport of few-layer-graphene (FLG) connected to superconducting electrodes. The device is prepared by mechanical exfoliation of graphite. A small mesa of FLG is placed on the surface of an insulating Alumina layer over silicon substrate, and is connected with two tungsten electrodes, separated by 2.5 microns, grown by focused ion beam. While tungsten electrodes are superconducting below 4 K, proximity induced superconductivity in FLG is observed below 1K with a large differential resistance drop at low bias. Signatures of multiple Andreev reflections are observed as peaks located at voltages corresponding to sub-multiple values of the superconducting gap of the electrodes.

Fundamental Casimir-Onsager symmetry rules for linear response do not apply to non linear transport. This motivates the investigation of nonlinear dc conductance of mesoscopic GaAs/GaAlAs rings in a 2 wire configuration. The second order current response to a potential bias is of particular interest. It is related to the sensitivity of conductance fluctuations to this bias and contains information on electron interactions not included in the linear response. In contrast with the linear response which is a symmetric function of magnetic field we find that this second order response exhibits a field dependence which contains an antisymmetric part. We analyse the flux periodic and aperiodic components of this asymmetry and find that they only depend on the conductance of the rings which is varied by more than an order of magnitude. These results are in good agreement with recent theoretical predictions relating this asymmetric response to the electron interactions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have altered the superconductivity of a suspended rope of single walled carbon nanotubes, by coating it with organic polymers. Upon coating, the normal state resistance of the rope changes by less than 20 percent. But superconductivity, which on the bare rope shows up as a substantial resistance decrease below 300 mK, is gradualy suppressed. We correlate this to the suppression of radial breathing modes, measured with Raman Spectroscopy on suspended Single and Double-walled carbon nanotubes. This points to the breathing phonon modes as being responsible for superconductivity in carbon nanotubes.

Recent experimental and theoretical results on intrinsic superconductivity in ropes of single-wall carbon nanotubes are reviewed and compared. We find strong experimental evidence for superconductivity when the distance between the normal electrodes is large enough. This indicates the presence of attractive phonon-mediated interactions in carbon nanotubes, which can even overcome the repulsive Coulomb interactions. The effective low-energy theory of rope superconductivity explains the experimental results on the temperature-dependent resistance below the transition temperature in terms of quantum phase slips. Quantitative agreement with only one fit parameter can be obtained. We report low-temperature transport measurements through molecules of Gd metallofullerenes between superconducting suspended electrodes. The presence and number of molecules in the 2 nm-wide gap between electrodes was determined by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. We find that a junction containing a single metallofullerene dimer between superconducting electrodes displays signs of proximity-induced superconductivity. In contrast, no proximity effects develops in junctions containing larger cluster of metallofulerenes. These results can be understood by taking into account multiple Andreev reflections, and the spin states of the Gd atoms., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to Phys.Rev.Lett

We report low temperature transport measurements on suspended single walled carbon nanotubes (both individual tubes and ropes). The technique we have developed, where tubes are soldered on low resistive metallic contacts across a slit, enables a good characterization of the samples by transmission electron microscopy. It is possible to obtain individual tubes with a room temperature resistance smaller than 40 kOhms, which remain metallic down to very low temperatures. When the contact pads are superconducting, nanotubes exhibit proximity induced superconductivity with surprisingly large values of supercurrent. We have also recently observed intrinsic superconductivity in ropes of single walled carbon nanotubes connected to normal contacts, when the distance between the normal electrodes is large enough, since otherwise superconductivity is destroyed by (inverse) proximity effect. These experiments indicate the presence of attractive interactions in carbon nanotubes which overcome Coulomb repulsive interactions at low temperature, and enables investigation of superconductivity in a 1D limit never explored before., Comment: To be published in Phys. We have performed noise measurements on suspended ropes of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) between 1 and 300 K for different values of dc current through the ropes. We find that the shot noise is suppressed by more than a factor 100 compared to the full shot noise 2eI. We have also measured an individual SWNT and found a level of noise which is smaller than the minimum expected. Another finding is the very low level of 1/f noise, which is significantly lower than previous observations. We propose two possible interpretations for this strong shot noise reduction: i) Transport within a rope takes place through a few nearly ballistic tubes within a rope and possibly involves non integer effective charges. ii) A substantial fraction of the tubes conduct with a strong reduction of effective charge (by more than a factor 50)., Comment: Submitted to Eur. We present detailed measurements of the discrete electron-tunneling level spectrum within nanometer-scale cobalt particles as a function of magnetic field and gate voltage, in this way probing individual quantum many-body eigenstates inside ferromagnetic samples. Variations among the observed levels indicate that different quantum states within one particle are subject to different magnetic anisotropy energies. Gate-voltage studies demonstrate that the low-energy tunneling spectrum is affected dramatically by the presence of non-equilibrium spin excitations.

We report measurements on ropes of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWNT) in low-resistance contact to non-superconducting (normal) metallic pads, at low voltage and at temperatures down to 70 mK. In one sample, we find a two order of magnitude resistance drop below 0.55 K, which is destroyed by a magnetic field of the order of 1T, or by a d.c. current greater than 2.5 microA. These features strongly suggest the existence of superconductivity in ropes of SWNT., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Lett

We measure electron tunneling via discrete energy levels in ferromagnetic cobalt particles less than 4 nm in diameter, using non-magnetic electrodes. Due to magnetic anisotropy, the energy of each tunneling resonance shifts as an applied magnetic field rotates the particle's magnetic moment. We see both spin-increasing and decreasing tunneling transitions, but we do not observe the spin degeneracy at small magnetic fields seen previously in non-magnetic materials. The tunneling spectrum is denser than predicted for independent electrons, possibly due to spin-wave excitations., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Improved by comments from referees, to appear in Phys. The presence of spin-orbit scattering within an aluminum nanoparticle affects measurements of the discrete energy levels within the particle by (1) reducing the effective g-factor below the free-electron value of 2, (2) causing avoided crossings as a function of magnetic field between predominantly-spin-up and predominantly-spin-down levels, and (3) introducing magnetic-field-dependent changes in the amount of current transported by the tunneling resonances. All three effects can be understood in a unified fashion by considering a simple Hamiltonian. Spin-orbit scattering from 4% gold impurities in superconducting aluminum nanoparticles produces no dramatic effect on the superconducting gap at zero magnetic field, but we argue that it does modify the nature of the superconducting transition in a magnetic field., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures.
