With the improvement of irrigation and transportation infrastructures, single tobacco cultivation has been converted into tobacco–vegetable double cultivation in Yunnan Province. High residual nitrogen (N) levels in soil before tobacco transplanting induced by the excessive N input during the vegetable cultivation season resulted in a reduction of economic income and the quality of flue-cured tobacco. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to describe the optimization of N management and to provide a better understanding of the mechanism of optimal N application rate on the economic benefit and quality of tobacco. A field experiment with six N application rates (0, 45, 60, 75, 90, and 105 kg N ha−1) was carried out with a randomized block design in 2021 and 2022 in Yunnan Province. The economic value and yield, intrinsic chemical and processing quality, leaf growth rate and agronomic characters were determined.

The overuse of nitrogen (N) fertilizer in the vegetable growing season leads to a high amount of soil residual N and a decrease of resistance to tobacco disease in the vegetable–tobacco continuous cultivation system, which will seriously threaten the sustainable development of tobacco production. Humic acid (HA) rich in bioactive substances and microelements may enhance leaf growth rate and improve the quality of tobacco. A two‐factor randomized block experiment was carried out over 2 years to evaluate the effects of additional applying HA (0 and 150 L ha−1) combined with three N rates (0, 60, and 90 kg N ha−1) on tobacco growth, economic value, chemical, and processing quality. Applying HA significantly increased the tobacco economic value by 5%–28%. The superior tobacco yields positively correlated with the economic value (R2 = 0.88), which was the key factor determining the increase of the economic value. The application of HA decreased the disease severity and increased the microelement uptake and the daily leaf growth rate in the prosperous growing stage which was positively correlated with the superior tobacco yield. Applying HA significantly improved the chemical quality and reduced the leaf midrib proportion. At the N rate of 60 kg N ha−1, HA showed the best effect of improving quality and increasing income. Our results demonstrated that the addition of HA can significantly improve the economic value and the chemical and processing quality of tobacco. The best effect can be achieved by adjusting the N rate appropriately according to the amount of soil residual N before transplanting tobacco seedlings. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) infect insects and reproduce within the host cadaver. The nematodes use chemotaxis to assist in host-finding. However, the chemotaxis of nematode species in response to insects previously infected by con- and hetero-specific EPN in a sand context has rarely been reported. Our aim was to address the response of Steinernema carpocapsae All (Sc) to Galleria mellonella cadavers infected by con- or hetero-specific EPNs (Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HB1, S. feltiae SN, S. rarum 17 C&E) in sand via chemotaxis assays. Additionally, the effect of different time points post-infection was also evaluated. Results indicated that previously infected G. mellonella larvae repelled infective juveniles (IJs) of Sc (p < 0.05) regardless of the time point post-infection and EPN species (con- or hetero-specific) and had a lower chemotaxis index as compared to that of no larvae addition in both sides. Moreover, it was found that for each of four tested EPN species, EPNs infected insect cadavers released dimethyl disulphide, which was identified by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). We found that dimethyl disulphide acted as a repellent to Sc infective juveniles and reached a significant effect at the level of 0.106 mol/L. Our findings could provide a better understanding of movement behaviour of EPN infective juveniles in response to insect resources in the presence of con- or hetero-specific EPNs. Spodoptera litura (F.) is an obnoxious cosmopolitan pest that causes serious damage to different economic crops. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) have the potential to control the S. litura larvae. Fifteen EPN isolates were screened, and Steinernema sp. 64-2, four isolates of S. carpocapsae (Weiser), S. longicaudum (Shen & Wang) X-7, and two isolates of H. indica (Poinar, Karunaka & David) were found to cause higher mortality of the second, third, and fourth instars of S. litura than the other tested isolates, with larval mortality rates > 90% after 48 h of exposure. An exposure rate of 12.5 infective juveniles per larva was enough for S. carpocapsae A24, All, and G-R3a-2 and S. longicaudum X-7 to cause 100% mortality of the second instar, and for S. longicaudum X-7 and H. indica 212-2 to cause 100% mortality of the third instar. Five EPN isolates were tested on their virulence at different temperatures and found that all the five EPN isolates performed well against the S. litura larvae at 25 and 30°C, but were not active at 10 and 15°C. Two S. carpocapsae isolates (All and Mex) were virulent against the S. litura larvae at lower temperatures. The five tested EPN isolates were also found to have the ability to infect and kill the pupae of S. litura in the laboratory. The present study further proves that EPN are effective at controlling S. litura , which may partially substitute the use of chemical insecticides, thus reduce the overuse of chemical insecticides. Technology for mass storage is one of the most important issues facing the use of parasitoids for biological control programmes. The emergence rate, the proportion of females, adult longevity, parasitism rate of Aphidius gifuensis after cold storage of mummies at 5°C for different time periods, and the effect of different diets on their longevity were assessed. The results indicated that 10-30 days was a suitable period for cold storage at 5°C, but that 20 days was optimal. The 5% glucose solution was a successful food supplement for A. gifuensis. Background and Objectives: The biocontrol agent Aphidius gifuensis has widely been released and applied since 1997 to control Myzus persicae in tobacco fields of Yunnan Province, southwestern China, but its ecological effects on the local insect community and diversity have not been described. Biological control agents may effect a diversity of organisms as well as the target for control but such trophic cascades have seldom been studied. This study aimed to explore the effects of A. gifuensis on the insect community and diversity in tobacco fields after long-term release and expansion of the biocontrol agent in Yunnan Province., Materials and Methods: The effects of A. gifuensis on species composition, importance value, species richness, diversity indices and evenness index were studied for insect community samples obtained via field surveys and malaise trap collection in Yunnan Province., Results: A total of 39 insect species and 1 spider, principally belonging to 40 families and 13 orders in tobacco fields of Yunnan Province were identified. Among these, there were 20 pests, 14 natural enemies and 6 others, constituting 50, 35 and 15% of total species sampled, respectively. Within insect communities, M. persicae, Empoasca flavescens and Drosophila melanogaster were the dominant species and Spodoptera litura, one unidentified species (Ichneumonidae), Sphex haemorrhoidalis, Vespa veutinaauraris, Aedes albopictus, A. gifuensis and Liriomyza huidobrensis were the subdominant species. From June to August, the relative density of A. gifuensis gradually increased and concomitantly the total relative density of other natural enemies exhibited a slight decline in July and marked increase in August. The relative density of M. persicae significantly increased in July and then declined precipitously in August. Moreover, the values of Simpson index, Shannon-Wiener index and Pielou index were greater than 0.50, 1.50 and 0.50, respectively, indicating high insect diversity., Conclusion: Beneficial insects, in addition to the biocontrol agent are relatively abundant in tobacco fields of Yunnan Province, marking improvement in the local insect community diversity after a long-term release of the biocontrol agent A. gifuensis, which, by land area, constitutes one of the largest natural enemy control programs in the world.
