J��zef Innocenty Maria Boche��ski was one of the most colourful figures of the 20th century Polish emigration. His eventful biography would have been suf��ficient to endow with it several people ��� Dominican father, logician, historian of philosophy, sovietologist, army chapla��in, pilot and traveller, renowned lectu��rer and valued preacher, he was one of the most original and outstanding Po��lish intellectuals. As a scholar, lecturer and publicist he left a vast legacy. Tho��mism was a starting point of his acade��mic journey (under supervision of Fr. Ja��cek Woroniecki), later on he devoted himself to logic and analytic philosophy. He described himself as a rationalist, analyst and exponent of objectivity. This rationalist trait was characteristic of Fr. Boche��ski - he perceived all problems and issues through the lens of philoso��phical realism, cognitive objectivity and, in his earlier writings, from the stand��point of Thomism with its basic me��taphysical categories. In his analyses Boche��ski made Ari��stotelian realism his point of departure, claiming that a man as a person is essen��tially a social being because of his spiri��tual nature. A human being is a social being both in a negative (���a man as a person cannot live without society be��cause his full development will be im��possible to achieve without it���) and po��sitive sense (���man is adapted to society, coexistence and cooperation with other people���). These bonds and relationships are so strong that sociability constitutes an essential feature of human nature.

Two-dimensional structures, either periodic or random, can be classified by diverse mathematical methods. Quantitative descriptions of such surfaces, however, are scarce since bijective definitions must be found to measure unique dependency between described structures and the chosen quantitative parameters. To solve this problem, we use statistical analysis of periodic fibrous structures by Hurst exponent distributions. Although such a Hurst exponent approach was suggested some years ago, the quantitative analysis of atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of nanofiber mats in such a way was described only recently. In this paper, we discuss the influence of typical AFM image post-processing steps on the gray-scale-resolved Hurst exponent distribution. Examples of these steps are polynomial background subtraction, aligning rows, deleting horizontal errors and sharpening. Our results show that while characteristic features of these false-color images may be shifted in terms of gray-channel and Hurst exponent, they can still be used to identify AFM images and, in the next step, to quantitatively describe AFM images of nanofibrous surfaces. Such a gray-channel approach can be regarded as a simple way to include some information about the 3D structure of the image.

This paper refers to the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri in commemoration of which Pope Francis released a special apostolic letter highlighting the genius and significance of the Italian poet. We should praise his genius, the Pope writes, because it is he who was able to express,much better than most of the others, the depth of the mystery of God and His love. The Commedia is the fruit of deep religious inspiration. This is why Francis repeats after Benedict XV – „Dante is our own!” Why is it so? Because there breathes in Alighieri the devotion that we too feel and his faith resonates with ours. Dante’s work continues to be a meaningful and valid exemplar for Christ’s followers. However, in today’s pop culture Dante is mainly seen through his depiction of hell – the artistically described eternal punishment. The truth about hell which Dante made the subject of his narrative does not find acceptance even between Christians. Many people are really outraged and scandalized because hell is for them the symbol of sadism and distorted image of God – a vengeful tyrant who condemns human souls to eternal perdition. But hell is present in the biblical message. The early Church Fathers spoke of hell in their sermons, wrote about it in treatises, disputed the dwelling place of the condemned souls, the position of Satan and other demons, and the imminence of God’s judgement. In this way in the Catholic dogmatic theology consolidated the truth of the reality of hell and eternal punishment. This was also in accord with the views of the prominent medieval theologians. Therefore, why the ancient and well-known truth about hell is rejected today as outrageous and Dante’s vision does not gain recognition? The heart of the matter is the understanding of the idea of justice and atonement. In their denial expressed through the notion of the empty hell and rejection of eternal punishment for angels’ and people’s sins, we have to do with misunderstanding of the significance of human intellect and will. The refusal to accept responsibility for our free choices entails the uninhibited rejection of seriousness of our earthly life. If we believe that our fate, and what is more, out eternal fate – the salvation or damnation – depends on what we were able to do in our lifetime, Dante’s poetic vision strongly illustrates this standpoint. The power of free will is deeply and inalienably present in The Comedy’s stanzas. In the Dante’s poem the essence of hell lies in the ultimate rejection of the goal that man longs to achieve from his very nature – the happiness which is the union with the infinite Good – God, the Creator and the Redeemer of the world. How is it possible? It happens due to the existence of free will which is innate to all people and no one can deprive them of it or minimise it. This rejection of the sublime happiness is the result of human free decision – the condemned did not say to God: “Thy will be done!” but “my will be done!”. The existence of hell becomes the guarantee of human dignity, the evidence that a perfectly Good and Omnipotent God treats the man whom He had created seriously and preserves him for the eternity in the same state in which he wanted to remain in his earthly life., Artykuł nawiązuje do siedemsetnej rocznicy śmierci Dantego Alighieri, w związku z którą papież Franciszek ogłosił specjalny list ukazujący geniusz i znaczenie twórczości włoskiego poety. Winniśmy wychwalać jego geniusz – pisze papież – bo właśnie on potrafił, znacznie lepiej niż wielu innych, wyrazić głębię tajemnicy Boga i Jego miłości. Commedia jest owocem głębokiego natchnienia religijnego. Dlatego Franciszek za papieżem Benedyktem XV mówi: „Dante jest nasz!”. Dlaczego? Ponieważ w Alighierim oddycha ta sama pobożność, która jest w nas, a jego wiara żywi te same uczucia. Twórczość Dantego jest zatem wciąż wymownym i aktualnym wzorem dla wyznawców Chrystusa. Dziś jednak w popkulturze Dante jest postrzegany głównie przez obraz piekła – plastycznie opisanej kary wiecznej. Prawda o piekle, którą Dante uczynił przedmiotem swej opowieści, nie znajduje dziś akceptacji nawet pośród chrześcijan. Wiele osób oburza się i jest autentycznie zgorszonych, bo piekło jest dla nich symbolem sadyzmu i wypaczonego obrazu Boga – mściwego tyrana skazującego dusze ludzkie na wieczną zagładę. A przecież piekło jest obecne w przesłaniu biblijnym. Mówili o nim w kazaniach Ojcowie Kościoła, którzy dyskutowali na temat umiejscowienia dusz potępionych, sytuacji Szatana i demonów, nieuchronności sądu Bożego. W ten sposób utrwaliła się w katolickiej dogmatyce prawda wiary o realności piekła i odbywającej się tam wiecznej karze. Tak też wybrzmiewała ona u czołowych teologów średniowiecza. Dlaczego zatem dawna i znana prawda o piekle jest dziś odrzucana i gorsząca, a Dantejska wizja nie znajduje uznania? Istotą problemu jest rozumienie idei sprawiedliwości i zadośćuczynienia. W ich negacji, wyrażającej się w tezie o pustym piekle oraz nieakceptacji wiecznej kary za grzechy aniołów i ludzi, mamy ostatecznie do czynienia z niezrozumieniem znaczenia ludzkiego intelektu i woli. Gdy zabraknie uznania odpowiedzialności człowieka za swoje wolne wybory, następuje jawne odrzucenie całej powagi ziemskiego życia. Jeżeli nasz los, i to los wieczny – zbawienie lub potępienie – zależy od tego, czego zdołaliśmy dokonać w tym życiu, to właśnie Dantejska poezja wskazuje na to z całą mocą. Owa siła wolności – do końca i na zawsze – jest głęboko obecna w strofach Commedii. W poemacie Dantego istota piekła polega na odrzuceniu na zawsze celu, którego człowiek pragnie z samej swej natury, szczęścia, którym jest zjednoczenie z Dobrem nieskończonym – Bogiem – Stwórcą i Odkupicielem świata. Jak to możliwe? Mocą wolności, której człowiekowi nikt i nic nie odbiera, nie pomniejsza. Owo porzucenie nastąpiło bowiem z własnej woli – potępieńcy powiedzieli Bogu nie: „bądź wola Twoja!”, ale „bądź wola moja!”. Istnienie piekła staje się gwarancją ludzkiej godności, jest znakiem, że Dobry i Wszechmocny Bóg poważnie traktuje stworzonego przez siebie człowieka i na wieczność zachowuje go takim, jakim ten zechciał być w swoim życiu doczesnym.
