Energy-efficient spintronic devices require a large spin-orbit torque (SOT) and low damping to excite magnetic precession. In conventional devices with heavy-metal/ferromagnet bilayers, reducing the ferromagnet thickness to $\sim$1 nm enhances the SOT but dramatically increases damping. Here, we investigate an alternative approach based on a 10 nm thick single-layer ferromagnet to attain both low damping and a sizable SOT. Instead of relying on a single interface, we continuously break the bulk inversion symmetry with a vertical compositional gradient of two ferromagnetic elements: Fe with low intrinsic damping and Ni with sizable spin-orbit coupling. We find low effective damping parameters of $\alpha_\mathrm{eff} < 5\times10^{-3}$ in the FeNi alloy films, despite the steep compositional gradients. Moreover, we reveal a sizable anti-damping SOT efficiency of $\theta_\mathrm{AD} \approx 0.05$, even without an intentional compositional gradient. Through depth-resolved x-ray diffraction, we identify a lattice strain gradient as crucial symmetry breaking that underpins the SOT. Our findings provide fresh insights into damping and SOTs in single-layer ferromagnets for power-efficient spintronic devices.

The ongoing development of single electron, nano and atomic scale semiconductor devices would benefit greatly from a characterization tool capable of detecting single electron charging events with high spatial resolution, at low temperature. In this work, we introduce a novel Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) instrument capable of measuring critical device dimensions, surface roughness, electrical surface potential, and ultimately the energy levels of quantum dots and single electron transistors in ultra miniaturized semiconductor devices. Characterization of nanofabricated devices with this type of instrument presents a challenge: finding the device. We therefore also present a process to efficiently find a nanometre size quantum dot buried in a $10 \times 10~\text{mm}^2$ silicon sample using a combination of optical positioning, capacitive sensors and AFM topography in vacuum.

We use electrostatic force microscopy to spatially resolve random telegraph noise at the Si/SiO$_2$ interface. Our measurements demonstrate that two-state fluctuations are localized at interfacial traps, with bias-dependent rates and amplitudes. These two-level systems lead to correlated carrier number and mobility fluctuations with a range of characteristic timescales; taken together as an ensemble, they give rise to a $1/f$ power spectral trend. Such individual defect fluctuations at the Si/SiO$_2$ interface impair the performance and reliability of nanoscale semiconductor devices, and will be a significant source of noise in semiconductor-based quantum sensors and computers. The fluctuations measured here are associated with a four-fold competition of rates, including slow two-state switching on the order of seconds and, in one state, fast switching on the order of nanoseconds which is associated with energy loss.

A key open question in the study of layered superconducting nickelate films is the role that hydrogen incorporation into the lattice plays in the appearance of the superconducting state. Due to the challenges of stabilizing highly crystalline square planar nickelate films, films are prepared by the deposition of a more stable parent compound which is then transformed into the target phase via a topotactic reaction with a strongly reducing agent such as CaH$_2$. Recent studies, both experimental and theoretical, have introduced the possibility that the incorporation of hydrogen from the reducing agent into the nickelate lattice may be critical for the superconductivity. In this work, we use secondary ion mass spectrometry to examine superconducting La$_{1-x}$X$_x$NiO$_2$ / SrTiO$_3$ (X = Ca and Sr) and Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ / NdGaO$_3$ films, along with non-superconducting NdNiO$_2$ / SrTiO$_3$ and (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ / SrTiO$_3$. We find no evidence for extensive hydrogen incorporation across a broad range of samples, including both superconducting and non-superconducting films. Theoretical calculations indicate that hydrogen incorporation is broadly energetically unfavorable in these systems, supporting our conclusion that hydrogen incorporation is not generally required to achieve a superconducting state in layered square-planar nickelates., Comment: 23 pages, 21 figures (including supplemental information)

The interface of two materials can harbor unexpected emergent phenomena. One example is interface-induced superconductivity. In this work, we employ molecular beam epitaxy to grow a series of heterostructures formed by stacking together two non-superconducting antiferromagnetic materials, an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 and an antiferromagnetic iron chalcogenide FeTe. Our electrical transport measurements reveal interface-induced superconductivity in these heterostructures. By performing scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements, we observe a proximity-induced superconducting gap on the top surface of the MnBi2Te4 layer, confirming the interaction between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the MnBi2Te4 layer. Electrical manipulation of magnetic order by current-induced spin torques lays the foundation for spintronics. One promising approach is encoding information in the N\'eel vector of antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials, particularly to collinear antiferromagnets with the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), as the negligible stray fields and terahertz spin dynamics can enable memory devices with higher integration density and ultrafast speed. Here we demonstrate that the N\'eel order information in a prototypical collinear AFM insulator with PMA, Cr2O3, can be reliably readout via the anomalous Hall effect and efficiently switched by the spin-orbit torque (SOT) effect with a low current density of 5.8*106 A/cm2. Moreover, using Cr2O3 as a mediator, we electrically switch the magnetization of a Y3Fe5O12 film exchange-coupled to the Cr2O3 layer, unambiguously confirming the N\'eel order switching of the Cr2O3 layer. This work provides a significant basis for developing AFM memory devices based on collinear AFM materials with PMA.

When two different electronic materials are brought together, the resultant interface often shows unexpected quantum phenomena, including interfacial superconductivity and Fu-Kane topological superconductivity (TSC). Here, we use molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to synthesize heterostructures formed by stacking together two magnetic materials, a ferromagnetic topological insulator (TI) and an antiferromagnetic iron chalcogenide (FeTe). We discover emergent interface-induced superconductivity in these heterostructures and demonstrate the trifecta occurrence of superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and topological band structure in the magnetic TI layer, the three essential ingredients of chiral TSC. The unusual coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity can be attributed to the high upper critical magnetic field that exceeds the Pauli paramagnetic limit for conventional superconductors at low temperatures. The magnetic TI/FeTe heterostructures with robust superconductivity and atomically sharp interfaces provide an ideal wafer-scale platform for the exploration of chiral TSC and Majorana physics, constituting an important step toward scalable topological quantum computation., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. Magnetic skyrmions exhibit unique, technologically relevant pseudo-particle behaviors which arise from their topological protection, including well-defined, three-dimensional dynamic modes that occur at microwave frequencies. During dynamic excitation, spin waves are ejected into the interstitial regions between skyrmions, creating the magnetic equivalent of a turbulent sea. However, since the spin waves in these systems have a well-defined length scale, and the skyrmions are on an ordered lattice, ordered structures from spin wave interference can precipitate from the chaos. This work uses small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to capture the dynamics in hybrid skyrmions and investigate the spin wave structure. Performing simultaneous ferromagnetic resonance and SANS, the diffraction pattern shows a large increase in low-angle scattering intensity which is present only in the resonance condition. This scattering pattern is best fit using a mass fractal model, which suggests the spin waves form a long-range fractal network. The fractal structure is constructed of fundamental units with a size that encodes the spin wave emissions and are constrained by the skyrmion lattice. These results offer critical insights into the nanoscale dynamics of skyrmions, identify a new dynamic spin wave fractal structure, and demonstrates SANS as a unique tool to probe high-speed dynamics.

Breaking time-reversal symmetry in a Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ through doping with magnetic ions or by the magnetic proximity effect is expected to cause a transition to other topological phases (such as a Weyl semimetal). To this end, we investigate the possibility of proximity-induced ferromagnetic ordering in epitaxial Dirac semimetal (Cd$_3$As$_2$)/ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Sb) heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We report the comprehensive characterization of these heterostructures using structural probes (atomic force microscopy, x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy), angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, electrical magneto-transport, magnetometry, and polarized neutron reflectometry. Measurements of the magnetoresistance and Hall effect in the temperature range 2 K - 20 K show signatures that could be consistent with either a proximity effect or spin-dependent scattering of charge carriers in the Cd$_3$As$_2$ channel. Polarized neutron reflectometry sets constraints on the interpretation of the magnetotransport studies by showing that (at least for temperatures above 6 K) any induced magnetization in the Cd$_3$As$_2$ itself must be relatively small ($<$ 14 emu/cm$^3$).

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected chiral spin textures which present opportunities for next-generation magnetic data storage and logic information technologies. The topology of these structures originates in the geometric configuration of the magnetic spins - more generally described as the structure. While the skyrmion structure is most often depicted using a 2D projection of the three-dimensional structure, recent works have emphasized the role of all three dimensions in determining the topology and their response to external stimuli. In this work, grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scattering and polarized neutron reflectometry are used to determine the three-dimensional structure of hybrid skyrmions. The structure of the hybrid skyrmions, which includes a combination of N\'eel-like and Bloch-like components along their length, is expected to significantly contribute to their notable stability, which includes ambient conditions. To interpret the neutron scattering data, micromagnetic simulations of the hybrid skyrmions were performed, and the corresponding diffraction patterns were determined using a Born approximation transformation. The converged magnetic profile reveals the magnetic structure along with the skyrmion depth profile, including the thickness of the Bloch and N\'eel segments and the diameter of the core.

Electric field control of the exchange bias effect across ferromagnet/antiferromagnet (FM/AF) interfaces has offered exciting potentials for low-energy-dissipation spintronics. In particular, the solid state magneto-ionic means is highly appealing as it may allow reconfigurable electronics by transforming the all-important FM/AF interfaces through ionic migration. In this work, we demonstrate an approach that combines the chemically induced magneto-ionic effect with the electric field driving of nitrogen in the Ta/Co$_{0.7}$Fe$_{0.3}$/MnN/Ta structure to electrically manipulate exchange bias. Upon field-cooling the heterostructure, ionic diffusion of nitrogen from MnN into the Ta layers occurs. A significant exchange bias of 618 Oe at 300 K and 1484 Oe at 10 K is observed, which can be further enhanced after a voltage conditioning by 5% and 19%, respectively. This enhancement can be reversed by voltage conditioning with an opposite polarity. Nitrogen migration within the MnN layer and into the Ta capping layer cause the enhancement in exchange bias, which is observed in polarized neutron reflectometry studies. The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is characterized by a dissipationless chiral edge state with a quantized Hall resistance at zero magnetic field. Manipulating the QAH state is of great importance in both the understanding of topological quantum physics and the implementation of dissipationless electronics. Here, we realized the QAH effect in the magnetic topological insulator Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3 (CBST) grown on an uncompensated antiferromagnetic insulator Al-doped Cr2O3. Through polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR), we find a strong exchange coupling between CBST and Al-Cr2O3 surface spins fixing interfacial magnetic moments perpendicular to the film plane. The interfacial coupling results in an exchange-biased QAH effect. We further demonstrate that the magnitude and sign of the exchange bias can be effectively controlled using a field training process to set the magnetization of the Al-Cr2O3 layer. Our work demonstrates the use of the exchange bias effect to effectively manipulate the QAH state, opening new possibilities in QAH-based spintronics.

Emojis come with prepacked semantics making them great candidates to create new forms of more accessible communications. Yet, little is known about how much of this emojis semantic is agreed upon by humans, outside of textual contexts. Thus, we collected a crowdsourced dataset of one-word emoji descriptions for 1,289 emojis presented to participants with no surrounding text. The emojis and their interpretations were then examined for ambiguity. We find that with 30 annotations per emoji, 16 emojis (1.2%) are completely unambiguous, whereas 55 emojis (4.3%) are so ambiguous that their descriptions are indistinguishable from randomly chosen descriptions. Most of studied emojis are spread out between the two extremes. Furthermore, investigating the ambiguity of different types of emojis, we find that an important factor is the extent to which an emoji has an embedded symbolical meaning drawn from an established code-book of symbols. We conclude by discussing design implications.

The intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 (MBT) has provided a platform for the successful realization of exotic quantum phenomena. To broaden the horizons of MBT-based material systems, we intercalate ferromagnetic MnTe layers to construct the [(MBT)(MnTe)m]N superlattices by molecular beam epitaxy. The effective incorporation of ferromagnetic spacers mediates the anti-ferromagnetic interlayer coupling among the MBT layers through the exchange spring effect at the MBT/MnTe hetero-interfaces. Moreover, the precise control of the MnTe thickness enables the modulation of relative strengths among the constituent magnetic orders, leading to tunable magnetoelectric responses, while the superlattice periodicity serves as an additional tuning parameter to tailor the spin configurations of the synthesized multi-layers. Our results demonstrate the advantages of superlattice engineering for optimizing the magnetic interactions in MBT-family systems, and the ferromagnet-intercalated strategy opens up new avenues in magnetic topological insulator structural design and spintronic applications., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Magnetic ordering in topological insulators (TI) is crucial for breaking time-reversal symmetry (TRS) and thereby opening a gap in the topological surface states (TSSs) [1-6], which is the key for realizing useful topological properties such as the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, axion insulator state and the topological magnetoelectric effect. Combining TIs with magnetic materials can be expected to yield interfaces [26-28] with unique topological and magnetic phases but such interfaces largely remain unexplored. Here, we report the discovery of a novel antiferromagnetic (AFM) Van der Waals (VdW) phase at the interface of a sputtered c-axis oriented TI/FM (Bi2Te3/Ni80Fe20) heterostructure due to the formation of a Ni-intercalated Bi2Te3 VdW interfacial layer. The TI/FM heterostructure is shown to possess a significant spontaneous exchange bias and the presence of an AFM order at the interface via measurements of the hysteresis loop as well as the observation of compensated magnetic moments at the interface using polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR). An in-depth analysis of the structural and chemical properties of the interfacial AFM phase was carried out using selected area electron diffraction (SAED), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These studies show evidence of solid-state reaction between the intercalated Ni atoms and Bi2Te3 layers and of the formation of topologically nontrivial magnetic VdW compounds. The N\'eel temperature of the interfacial AFM phase is 63 K, which is higher than that of typical magnetic topological insulators [53]. Our study shows how industrial CMOS-process-compatible sputtered TI/FM heterostructures can provide a novel materials platform for exploring the emergence of interfacial topological magnetic phases and high-temperature topological magnetic states., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

To inform research activities in HPC interconnect of strategic importance to the USG beyond 2018, in January of 2018, the DoD sponsored the 2nd Photonics and Electronics Technology for Extreme-scale Computing (REPETE) workgroup. REPETE investigated new challenges in the area of HPC interconnect inspired by technology trends and challenges of vital importance to USG stakeholders. The REPETE Working group investigated two focus areas of interest to the USG: Socket Level Photonic IO and Cryogenic Photonic IO. The working group spanned industry, academia, and government, in research, development, product, and technology investment areas. The workgroup team focusing on current and future design challenges for socket level photonic IO began discussing technical challenges and current state of applying photonics to off-chip IO in April of 2019 through biweekly meetings that concluded in early September of 2019. The focus of these meetings was to discuss what technology exists for moving the conversion of electrical signaling to photonic signaling from the node (as is currently done) down to within the socket for off-chip IO. Areas discussed include: I/O Requirements and Trends at the Compute Socket for 2025 and Beyond; Current and Near-Term Copper Solutions for Off-Chip, Socket-Level Interconnect; Current Photonic Solutions for Off-Chip or Socket-Level Interconnect; Light Generation for Off-Chip, Socket-Level IO; Fabrication and Packaging of Photonic Integrated Circuits; All-Photonic Switching Technology; and Simulation of Photonic Interconnects.

Polarized neutron reflectometry is a powerful technique to interrogate the structures of multilayered magnetic materials with depth sensitivity and nanometer resolution. However, reflectometry profiles often inhabit a complicated objective function landscape using traditional fitting methods, posing a significant challenge to parameter retrieval. In this work, we develop a data-driven framework to recover the sample parameters from polarized neutron reflectometry data with minimal user intervention. We train a variational autoencoder to map reflectometry profiles with moderate experimental noise to an interpretable, low-dimensional space from which sample parameters can be extracted with high resolution. We apply our method to recover the scattering length density profiles of the topological insulator-ferromagnetic insulator heterostructure Bi$_2$Se$_3$/EuS exhibiting proximity magnetism, in good agreement with the results of conventional fitting. We further analyze a more challenging reflectometry profile of the topological insulator-antiferromagnet heterostructure (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$/Cr$_2$O$_3$ and identify possible interfacial proximity magnetism in this material. We anticipate the framework developed here can be applied to resolve hidden interfacial phenomena in a broad range of layered systems.

Electrically induced ionic motion offers a new way to realize voltage-controlled magnetism, opening the door to a new generation of logic, sensor, and data storage technologies. Here, we demonstrate an effective approach to magneto-ionically and electrically tune exchange bias in Gd/Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films (x=0.50, 0.67), where neither of the layers alone is ferromagnetic at room temperature. The Gd capping layer deposited onto antiferromagnetic Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O initiates a solid-state redox reaction that reduces an interfacial region of the oxide to ferromagnetic NiCo. Exchange bias is established after field cooling, which can be enhanced by up to 35% after a voltage conditioning and subsequently reset with a second field cooling. These effects are caused by the presence of an interfacial ferromagnetic NiCo layer, which further alloys with the Gd layer upon field cooling and voltage application, as confirmed by electron microscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry studies. The anomalous Hall, Nernst and thermal Hall coefficients of Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ display several features upon cooling, like a reversal in the Nernst signal below $T = 50$ K pointing to a topological transition (TT) associated to the development of magnetic spin textures. Since the anomalous transport variables are related to the Berry curvature, a possible TT might imply deviations from the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law. However, the anomalous Hall and thermal Hall coefficients of Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ are found, within our experimental accuracy, to satisfy the WF law for magnetic-fields $\mu_0H$ applied along its inter-layer direction. Surprisingly, large anomalous transport coefficients are also observed for $\mu_0H$ applied along the planar \emph{a}-axis as well as along the gradient of the chemical potential, a configuration that should not lead to their observation due to the absence of Lorentz force. However, as $\mu_0H$ $\|$ \emph{a}-axis is increased, magnetization and neutron scattering indicate just the progressive canting of the magnetic moments towards the planes followed by their saturation. These anomalous planar quantities are found to not scale with the component of the planar magnetization ($M_{\|}$), showing instead a sharp decrease beyond $\sim \mu_0 H_{\|} = $ 4 T which is the field required to align the magnetic moments along $\mu_0 H_{\|}$. We argue that locally chiral spin structures, such as skyrmions, and possibly skyrmion tubes, lead to a field dependent spin-chirality and hence to a novel type of topological anomalous transport. We report spin-to-charge and charge-to-spin conversion at room temperature in heterostructure devices that interface an archetypal Dirac semimetal, Cd3As2, with a metallic ferromagnet, Ni0.80Fe0.20 (permalloy). The spin-charge interconversion is detected by both spin torque ferromagnetic resonance and ferromagnetic resonance driven spin pumping. Analysis of the symmetric and anti-symmetric components of the mixing voltage in spin torque ferromagnetic resonance and the frequency and power dependence of the spin pumping signal show that the behavior of these processes is consistent with previously reported spin-charge interconversion mechanisms in heavy metals, topological insulators, and Weyl semimetals. We find that the efficiency of spin-charge interconversion in Cd3As2/permalloy bilayers can be comparable to that in heavy metals. We discuss the underlying mechanisms by comparing our results with first principles calculations.

Inducing an inversion layer in organic semiconductors is a highly nontrivial, but critical, achievement for producing organic field-effect transistor (OFET) devices, which rely on the generation of inversion, accumulation, and depletion regimes for successful operation. In recent years, a major milestone was reached: an OFET was made to successfully operate in the inversion-mode for the first time. Here, we develop a pulsed bias technique to characterize the dopant type of any organic material system, without prior knowledge or characterization of the material in question. We use this technique on a pentacene/PTCDI heterostructure and thus deduce that pentacene is n-doped by impurities. Additionally, through tip-induced band-bending, we generate inversion, depletion, and accumulation regimes over a 20~nm radius, three monolayer thick n-doped pentacene island. Theory predicts that two-dimensional (2D) materials may only exist in the presence of out-ofplane deformations on atomic length scales, frequently referred to as ripples. While such ripples can be detected via electron microscopy, their direct observation via surface-based techniques and characterization in terms of interaction forces and energies remain limited, preventing an unambiguous study of their effect on mechanical characteristics, including but not limited to friction anisotropy. Here, we employ high-resolution atomic force microscopy to demonstrate the presence of atomic-scale ripples on supported samples of few-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_{2}$). Three-dimensional force / energy spectroscopy is utilized to study the effect of ripples on the interaction landscape. Friction force microscopy reveals multiple symmetries for friction anisotropy, explained by studying rippled sample areas as a function of scan size. Engineering magnetic anisotropy in two-dimensional systems has enormous scientific and technological implications. The uniaxial anisotropy universally exhibited by two-dimensional magnets has only two stable spin directions, demanding 180 degrees spin switching between states. We demonstrate a novel eightfold anisotropy in magnetic SrRuO3 monolayers by inducing a spin reorientation in (SrRuO3)1/(SrTiO3)N superlattices, in which the magnetic easy axis of Ru spins is transformed from uniaxial <001> direction (N = 1 and 2) to eightfold <111> directions (N = 3, 4 and 5). This eightfold anisotropy enables 71 and 109 degrees spin switching in SrRuO3 monolayers, analogous to 71 and 109 degrees polarization switching in ferroelectric BiFeO3. First-principle calculations reveal that increasing the SrTiO3 layer thickness induces an emergent correlation-driven orbital ordering, tuning spin-orbit interactions and reorienting the SrRuO3 monolayer easy axis. Electric fields can transform materials with respect to their structure and properties, enabling various applications ranging from batteries to spintronics. Recently electrolytic gating, which can generate large electric fields and voltage-driven ion transfer, has been identified as a powerful means to achieve electric-field-controlled phase transformations. The class of transition metal oxides (TMOs) provide many potential candidates that present a strong response under electrolytic gating. However, very few show a reversible structural transformation at room-temperature. Here, we report the realization of a digitally synthesized TMO that shows a reversible, electric-field-controlled transformation between distinct crystalline phases at room-temperature. In superlattices comprised of alternating one-unit-cell of SrIrO3 and La0.2Sr0.8MnO3, we find a reversible phase transformation with a 7% lattice change and dramatic modulation in chemical, electronic, magnetic and optical properties, mediated by the reversible transfer of oxygen and hydrogen ions. Strikingly, this phase transformation is absent in the constituent oxides, solid solutions and larger period superlattices. Our findings open up a new class of materials for voltage-controlled functionality.

Ferromagnetic metals and insulators are widely used for generation, control and detection of magnon spin signals. Most magnonic structures are based primarily on either magnetic insulators or ferromagnetic metals, while heterostructures integrating both of them are less explored. Here, by introducing a Pt/yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/permalloy (Py) hybrid structure grown on Si substrate, we studied the magnetic coupling and magnon transmission across the interface of the two magnetic layers. We found that within this structure, Py and YIG exhibit an antiferromagnetic coupling field as strong as 150 mT, as evidenced by both the vibrating-sample magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry measurements. By controlling individual layer thicknesses and external fields, we realize parallel and antiparallel magnetization configurations, which are further utilized to control the magnon current transmission. We show that a magnon spin valve with an ON/OFF ratio of ~130% can be realized out of this multilayer structure at room temperature through both spin pumping and spin Seebeck effect experiments. Working in the framework of morphoelasticity, we develop a model of neurite growth in response to elastic deformation. We decompose the applied stretch into an elastic component and a growth component, and adopt an observationally-motivated model for the growth law. We then compute the best-fit model parameters by fitting to force-extension curves from measurements of constant-speed uniaxial deformations of mechanically-induced neurites of rat hippocampal neurons. We find a time constant for the growth law of 0.009~s$^{-1}$, similar to the diffusion rate of actin in a cell. Solid state ionic approaches for modifying ion distributions in getter/oxide heterostructures offer exciting potentials to control material properties. Here we report a simple, scalable approach allowing for total control of the superconducting transition in optimally doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ (YBCO) films via a chemically-driven ionic migration mechanism. Using a thin Gd capping layer of up to 20 nm deposited onto 100 nm thick epitaxial YBCO films, oxygen is found to leach from deep within the YBCO. Progressive reduction of the superconducting transition is observed, with complete suppression possible for a sufficiently thick Gd layer. These effects arise from the combined impact of redox-driven electron doping and modification of the YBCO microstructure due to oxygen migration and depletion. This work demonstrates an effective ionic control of superconductivity in oxides, an interface induced effect that goes well into the quasi-bulk regime, opening up possibilities for electric field manipulation., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures
