- Abstract
Scholars have offered research and theory about emotional labor and the feeling of emotion in rhetoric and composition, but we have little if any such research on writing center work specifically. Drawing on data from a year-long qualitative study of writing center directors' labor, this article examines writing center directors' emotional labor as valuable yet undervalued, fulfilling yet fraught. Emotional labor was work our participants had to do--and often wanted to do and enjoyed doing--in order to accomplish (smoothly, swiftly, or at all) the other tasks on their to-do lists. Emotional labor included tasks such as mentoring, advising, making small talk, putting on a friendly face, resolving conflicts, making connections, delegating and following up on progress, working in teams, disciplining or redirecting employees, gaining trust, and creating a positive workplace. Ultimately, participants suggest that emotional labor is difficult not because they must devote so much time to it, but because they have not been adequately prepared to expect and negotiate it.

Objectives: Cancer patients routinely exhibit dysfunctional circadian organization. Indeed, a dysfunctional circadian organization is a hallmark of advanced cancer. A cohort of advanced cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy was recruited to investigate whether manipulating exposure to blue light could restore or ameliorate their circadian organization. Methods: Thirty advanced metastatic cancer patients participated in a randomized crossover trial to evaluate whether blue light-blocking night-simulating eyeglasses could ameliorate a disrupted circadian organization better than sham eyeglasses. Circadian organization was evaluated by actigraphy and patients’ self-reports of sleep, fatigue, and quality of life. Kruskal–Wallis tests compared patients’ outcomes in circadian organization with a cohort of non-cancer, disease-free individuals with normal sleep as a negative control, and with advanced cancer patients with disrupted circadian organization as a positive control. Quality-of-life outcomes of the patients were compared with population-based controls (negative controls) and with cohorts of advanced cancer patients (positive controls). Results: Actigraphy measurements, self-reported sleep, fatigue levels, and quality-of-life outcomes of trial participants were similar to those of negative controls with a normal circadian organization, in spite of the trial patients’ concurrent chemotherapy. Night-simulating glasses did not improve circadian organization. The 24-h correlation of day-to-day rhythms of rest and activity was 0.455 for the experimental eyeglasses and 0.476 for the sham eyeglasses ( p = 0.258). Actigraphic and patient-reported outcomes compared favorably to outcomes of positive controls. Conclusion: The circadian organization of patients in this study unexpectedly resembled that of healthy controls and was better than comparison populations with disrupted circadian organization. The study clinic implements chronomodulated chemotherapy and a systematic, supportive integrative treatment protocol. Results suggest a need for further research on interventions for circadian rhythm. Although the study intervention did not benefit the participants, this work highlights the value of supporting circadian time structure in advanced cancer patients.

ABSTRACT During its life cycle, the facultative human pathogen Vibrio cholerae, which is the causative agent of the diarrheal disease cholera, needs to adapt to a variety of different conditions, such as the human host or the aquatic environment. Importantly, cholera infections originate from the aquatic reservoir where V. cholerae persists between the outbreaks. In the aquatic environment, bacteria are constantly threatened by predatory protozoa and nematodes, but our knowledge of the response pathways and adaptation strategies of V. cholerae to such stressors is limited. Using a temporally controlled reporter system of transcription, we identified more than 100 genes of V. cholerae induced upon exposure to the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, which emerged recently as a valuable model for environmental predation during the aquatic lifestyle of V. cholerae. Besides others, we identified and validated the genes encoding the mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (MSHA) type IV pilus to be significantly induced upon exposure to the nematode. Subsequent analyses demonstrated that the mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin is crucial for attachment of V. cholerae in the pharynx of the worm and initiation of colonization, which results in growth retardation and developmental delay of C. elegans. Thus, the surface adhesion factor MSHA could be linked to a fitness advantage of V. cholerae upon contact with bacterium-grazing nematodes. IMPORTANCE The waterborne diarrheal disease cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The facultative human pathogen persists as a natural inhabitant in the aquatic ecosystem between outbreaks. In contrast to the human host, V. cholerae requires a different set of genes to survive in this hostile environment. For example, predatory micrograzers are commonly found in the aquatic environment and use bacteria as a nutrient source, but knowledge of the interaction between bacterivorous grazers and V. cholerae is limited. In this study, we successfully adapted a genetic reporter technology and identified more than 100 genes activated by V. cholerae upon exposure to the bacterium-grazing nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. This screen provides a first glimpse into responses and adaptational strategies of the bacterial pathogen against such natural predators. Subsequent phenotypic characterization revealed the mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin to be crucial for colonization of the worm, which causes developmental delay and growth retardation.

The integration of information sources is a fundamental step to advance research and knowledge about the ancient mining landscape of Schwaz/Brixlegg in the Tyrol / Austria. The approach is applied for the localization, identification and interpretation of mining structures within the area. We want to show the use of the CIDOC CRM ontology with extensions in combination with a thesaurus to integrate data on a conceptual level. To implement this integration, we applied semantic web technologies to create a knowledge graph in RDF (Resource Description Framework) that currently represents the available information of seven different information sources in a network structure. More sources will be integrated using the same methodology. These are geochemical analysis of artefacts, onomastic research on names related to mining and archaeological information of other mining areas to research the spread of prehistoric mining activities and technologies. The RDF network can be queried for research, cultural or emergency response questions and the results can be displayed using Geoinformation systems. An exemplary archaeological research question is the location of mining, settlement and burial sites in the Bronze Age, differentiating between ore extraction, ore processing and smelting activities. For emergency forces the names and exact locations of mines are essential in case of an accident within an old mine. Different questions require a subset of the created knowledge graph. The results of queries to retrieve specific information can be visualised using appropriate tools.

38. New Media Matters: Tutoring in the Late Age of Print
- Author
-
McKinney, Jackie Grutsch
- Abstract
This article has been about reconsidering how writing center directors train tutors to read and respond to texts. The subject here has been new media texts. The author has asked directors to reconsider how they tutor and how they talk to students about their writing. The impetus for these evolved practices is the arrival of increasing numbers of new media texts assigned in university classes. As new media texts consciously and purposefully employ multiple modes to make meaning, they require tutors to direct their attention to texts differently. Current practices won't suffice, as they limit them to the alphabetic text. Thus, the author believes it is imperative to train all tutors in these evolved practices because they will change the ways they respond to all texts, considering more than they have before, perhaps in significant ways. Biology (General) ,QH301-705.5 - Abstract
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy provides a unique toolbox of experimental probes for studying dynamic processes on a wide range of timescales, ranging from picoseconds to milliseconds and beyond. Along with NMR hardware developments, recent methodological advancements have enabled the characterization of allosteric proteins at unprecedented detail, revealing intriguing aspects of allosteric mechanisms and increasing the proportion of the conformational ensemble that can be observed by experiment. Here, we present an overview of NMR spectroscopic methods for characterizing equilibrium fluctuations in free and bound states of allosteric proteins that have been most influential in the field. By combining NMR experimental approaches with molecular simulations, atomistic-level descriptions of the mechanisms by which allosteric phenomena take place are now within reach.
