Abstract

In May 2018, the Mayotte island, located in the Indian Ocean, was affected by an unprecedented seismic crisis, followed by anomalous on-land surface displacements in July 2018. Cumulatively from July 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021, the horizontal displacements were approximately 21 to 25 cm eastward, and subsidence was approximately 10 to 19 cm. The study of data recorded by the on-land GNSS network, and their modeling coupled with data from ocean bottom pressure gauges, allowed us to propose a magmatic origin of the seismic crisis with the deflation of a deep source east of Mayotte, that was confirmed in May 2019 by the discovery of a submarine eruption, 50 km offshore of Mayotte ([Feuillet et al., 2021]). Despite a non-optimal network geometry and receivers located far from the source, the GNSS data allowed following the deep dynamics of magma transfer, via the volume flow monitoring, throughout the eruption.

Abstract

The macroseismic and instrumental observations accumulated by the Bureau Central Sismologique Français and other national agencies over the last 100 years show that the northwestern part of metropolitan France is affected by an apparently diffuse and moderate intraplate seismicity. Far from any plate boundary, well-documented inherited structures, such as the Armorican shear zone network, the Sillon Houiller, and the normal faults related to the Atlantic ocean margin, likely exert significant control on the regional seismicity pattern. However, in the absence of a clearly measurable strain field, processes other than far-field tectonic stress loading such as erosion, gravitational potential energy, and/or hydraulic loadings can co-exist, but their respective influence on the current seismicity is debated and remains to be fully addressed. Reliable detection/location of low-to-moderate magnitude events is one of the most important challenges in the near future to better understand the processes that control this intraplate seismicity. As shown here for a limited region, this issue can be achieved positively, thanks to the new Résif-Epos network, in conjunction with sophisticated algorithms for both earthquakes’ detection and discrimination.

Abstract

The region of northeastern France is affected by low-magnitude background seismicity, with the rare occurrence of moderate earthquakes, which gives this region a non-negligible seismic risk. We provide an overview of the seismicity and seismotectonics of this intraplate domain and of its sub-regions: the Upper-Rhine Graben (URG), the external range and foreland of Jura, the Vosges, northern France and southern Belgium. Previously published catalogues over historical and instrumental times are used, and the epicentral distribution of earthquakes is compared to known tectonic structures, and the recently computed deformation field. Although no large earthquakes with $\mathrm{M}_{\mathrm{w}} > 6.0$ occurred since the 1356 Basel seismic event (Io IX, MKS), the recent identification of active faults suggests periods of high seismic strain rates in the past. The origin of the seismic activity in each of these sub-regions, characterized by low to very-low strain rates, is attributed to pre-existing faults reactivated under specific natural or anthropogenic conditions.

Abstract

Between November 2019 and January 2021, a series of seismic events were felt by the population of the city of Strasbourg, France. The first main event (MLv 3.0) that occurred on November 12, 2019, was part of a seismic swarm (the southern cluster) that has been initiated a few days before, lasted four months, and was located by the BCSF-Rénass (EOST), below La Robertsau area at a depth of 5 km. Its location in the vicinity of the deep geothermal wells (Geoven), the temporal correlation with the injection activity on site, the similarity of the depth between the bottom of the wells and the hypocenter of the event, the lack of local seismicity before the event occurrence, the known geological structures including crustal faults in the area, all strongly support the possible triggering of the events by the deep geothermal activities despite the relatively large distance (4–5 km). From template matching and double-difference relocations, a complex fault zone is evidenced in this southern cluster area that extends over 800 m. Focal mechanisms of the two largest events of the cluster are consistent with the known orientation of the main fault zone in the area. The regional stress field in combination with the fault orientation and a Coulomb failure criterion shows that the seismic cluster location is in an unstable domain, if the cohesion of the fault is weak, particularly sensitive to stress perturbations. Abstract

On November 11, 2019, a M$_{\mathrm{w}}$ 4.9 earthquake hit the region close to Montelimar (lower Rhône Valley, France), on the eastern margin of the Massif Central close to the external part of the Alps. Occuring in a moderate seismicity area, this earthquake is remarkable for its very shallow focal depth (between 1 and 3 km), its magnitude, and the moderate to large damages it produced in several villages. InSAR interferograms indicated a shallow rupture about 4 km long reaching the surface and the reactivation of the ancient NE–SW La Rouvière normal fault in reverse faulting in agreement with the present-day E–W compressional tectonics. The peculiarity of this earthquake together with a poor coverage of the epicentral region by permanent seismological and geodetic stations triggered the mobilisation of the French post-seismic unit and the broad French scientific community from various institutions, with the deployment of geophysical instruments (seismological and geodesic stations), geological field surveys, and field evaluation of the intensity of the earthquake. Within 7 days after the mainshock, 47 seismological stations were deployed in the epicentral area to improve the Le Teil aftershocks locations relative to the French permanent seismological network (RESIF), monitor the temporal and spatial evolution of microearthquakes close to the fault plane and temporal evolution of the seismic response of 3 damaged historical buildings, and to study suspected site effects and their influence in the distribution of seismic damage. This seismological dataset, completed by data owned by different institutions, was integrated in a homogeneous archive and distributed through FDSN web services by the RESIF data center. This dataset, together with observations of surface rupture evidences, geologic, geodetic and satellite data, will help to unravel the causes and rupture mechanism of this earthquake, and contribute to account in seismic hazard assessment for earthquakes along the major regional Cévenne fault system in a context of present-day compressional tectonics.

11. A new deep learning tool to discriminate earthquakes and quarry blasts in Mainland France

Abstract

Accurate seismic hazard assessment requires high quality and complete seismic catalogs. Anthropogenic events such as quarry blasts, rock bursts, explosions can introduce significant errors in statistical analyses, especially in areas with low background seismicity rates such as Mainland France.The BCSF-Renass, a national service of observation in seismology, characterizes the seismicity of the Mainland France, and makes available to the scientific community its seismic catalog. Until 2012, only natural seismicity was localized but since 2012, other types of events are localized and manually discriminated, in particular quarry blasts, marine explosions (demining operation), induced seismicity.These last years have seen a huge increase of new seismological stations installed in the Resif-EPOS framework. The main consequence is the location by the BCSF-Renass of many low magnitude events, most are quarry blasts (around half in 2022). The work of the analysts is considerably impacted, firstly by a huge increase of events to be processed and secondly by the difficulty of determining the events' origins with the issue of catalog contamination.This is why the BCSF-Renass, in early 2022, has developed a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) tool to automatically discriminate earthquakes from quarry blasts. The learning step was done on the 3 components seismogram spectra on the year 2021 events. The performances are more than 99% for precision and recall, and take well into account the different regions and geological contexts of France. Abstract

Human activity causes vibrations that propagate into the ground as high-frequency seismic waves. Measures to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread changes in human activity, leading to a months-long reduction in seismic noise of up to 50%. The 2020 seismic noise quiet period is the longest and most prominent global anthropogenic seismic noise reduction on record. While the reduction is strongest at surface seismometers in populated areas, this seismic quiescence extends for many kilometers radially and hundreds of meters in depth. This provides an opportunity to detect subtle signals from subsurface seismic sources that would have been concealed in noisier times and to benchmark sources of anthropogenic noise. A strong correlation between seismic noise and independent measurements of human mobility suggests that seismology provides an absolute, real-time estimate of population dynamics.

Abstract

The brutal onset of seismicity offshore Mayotte island North of the Mozambique Channel, Indian Ocean, that occurred in May 2018 caught the population, authorities, and scientific community off guard. Around 20 potentially felt earthquakes were recorded in the first 5 days, up to magnitude Mw 5.9. The scientific community had little pre-existing knowledge of the seismic activity in the region due to poor seismic network coverage. During 2018 and 2019, the MAYOBS/REVOSIMA seismology group was progressively built between four French research institutions to improve instrumentation and data sets to monitor what we know now as an on-going exceptional sub-marine basaltic eruption. After the addition of 3 medium-band stations on Mayotte island and 1 on Grande Glorieuse island in early 2019, the data recovered from the Ocean Bottom Seismometers were regularly processed by the group to improve the location of the earthquakes detected daily by the land network. We first built a new local 1D velocity model and established specific data processing procedures. The local 1.66 low VP/VS ratio we estimated is compatible with a volcanic island context. We manually picked about 125,000 P and S phases on land and sea bottom stations to locate more than 5,000 events between February 2019 and May 2020. The earthquakes outline two separate seismic clusters offshore that we named Proximal and Distal. The Proximal cluster, located 10km offshore Mayotte eastern coastlines, is 20 to 50 km deep and has a cylindrical shape. The Distal cluster start 5 km to the east of the Proximal cluster and extends below Mayotte's new volcanic edifice, from 50 km up to 25 km depth. The two clusters appear seismically separated, however our dataset is insufficient to firmly demonstrate this.

Abstract

International audience; On November 11, 2019, a Mw 4.9 earthquake hit the region close to Montelimar (lower Rhône Valley, France), on the eastern margin of the Massif Central close to the external part of the Alps. Occuring in a moderate seismicity area, this earthquake is remarkable for its very shallow focal depth (between 1 and 3 km), its magnitude, and the moderate to large damages it produced in several villages. InSAR interferograms indicated a shallow rupture about 4 km long reaching the surface and the reactivation of the ancient NE-SW La Rouviere normal fault in reverse faulting in agreement with the present-day E-W compressional tectonics. The peculiarity of this earthquake together with a poor coverage of the epicentral region by permanent seismological and geodetic stations triggered the mobilisation of the French post-seismic unit and the broad French scientific community from various institutions, with the deployment of geophysical instruments (seismological and geodesic stations), geological field surveys, and field evaluation of the intensity of the earthquake. Within 7 days after the mainshock, 47 seismological stations were deployed in the epicentral area to improve the Le Teil aftershocks locations relative to the French permanent seismological network (RESIF), monitor the temporal and spatial evolution of microearthquakes close to the fault plane and temporal evolution of the seismic response of 3 damaged historical buildings, and to study suspected site effects and their influence in the distribution of seismic damage. This seismological dataset, completed by data owned by different institutions, was integrated in a homogeneous archive and distributed through FDSN web services by the RESIF data center. This dataset, together with observations of surface rupture evidences, geologic, geodetic and satellite data, will help to unravel the causes and rupture mechanism of this earthquake, and contribute to account in seismic hazard assessment for earthquakes along the major regional Cévenne fault system in a context of present-day compressional tectonics.

Abstract

In recent years, the French seismological, geodetic and gravimetric community has been structured within RESIF (French seismological and geodetic network). In addition to instrumental developments, RESIF has structured the work on French seismicity (metropolitan and overseas) within the RESIF transverse seismicity action (ATS). The purpose of this article is to present the ATS and the way it is structured to propose to the community different products: seismicity bulletin and catalogue, historical and instrumental macroseismicity data, shakemaps. The places where these products can be found are indicated, as well as the way they are realized and the improvements in progress for a better realization and availability. The link with EPOS (European plate observing system) is also underlined.; Ces dernières années, la communauté sismologique, géodésique et gravimétrique française s'est structurée au sein de RESIF (Réseau sismologique et géodésique français). Outre les développements instrumentaux, RESIF a structuré les travaux sur la sismicité française (métropole et outre-mer) au sein de l'Action transverse sismicité (ATS) de RESIF. L'objet de cet article est de présenter l'ATS et la manière dont elle est structurée pour proposer à la communauté différents produits : bulletin et catalogue de sismicité, données historiques et instrumentales de macrosismicité, shakemaps. 26. CDGP- a gateway to geothermal data in Alsace

Abstract

The CDGP [https://cdgp.u-strasbg.fr], Data Center for Deep Geothermal Energy, was created in 2016 by the LabEx G-Eau-Thermie Profonde (continuing now in ITI GeoT) [https://geot.unistra.fr/], to archive the high-quality data collected in the Upper Rhine Graben geothermal sites and to distribute them to the scientific community for R activities, taking Intellectual Property Rights into account. It manages seismological (catalogues, waveforms, focal mechanisms), seismic, hydraulic, geological, and other data related to anthropogenic hazard from different phases of a geothermal project. Up to now, data are related to Soultz-sous-Forêts, Rittershoffen, Vendenheim and Illkirch. The CDGP was designed (1) as a store to archive and distribute isolated data and (2) as a gateway to access data handled by another datastore. Indeed, other data can be found elsewhere: in official national stores like Minergies [http://www.minergies.fr/en]or InfoTerre [https://infoterre.brgm.fr/], in academic or project-related stores like BCSF-Renass [https://renass.unistra.fr] or GFZ Data Services [https://dataservices.gfz-potsdam.de/portal/], or even using an internal data service like the one provided by the EOST’ seismological data center CDS [https://eost.unistra.fr/plateformes/cds]. A major objective is to give access to data – even outside the CDGP; they are described in metadata records, where links to the resource are set. Access rights can be controlled and granted either by the destination store, or - if requested - by the CDGP. In this latter case, access rules are defined by the center providing data, and access is validated by the CDGP and request is made only if it is granted. Another advantage is to avoid data duplication and therefore disk space, follow-up of updates, access rights management. If possible, these remote data are also provided as the local data to the EPOS Anthropogenic Hazard platform [https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/] This feature is useful for users who do not need to search for data on several different sites. It is also useful for data providers and centers who wish to make their data known while keeping control of data access, or need to do special actions before giving access to their data.

Abstract

The brutal onset of seismicity offshore Mayotte island North of the Mozambique Channel, Indian Ocean, that occurred in May 2018 caught the population, authorities, and scientific community off guard. Around 20 potentially felt earthquakes were recorded in the first 5 days, up to magnitude Mw 5.9. The scientific community had little pre-existing knowledge of the seismic activity in the region due to poor seismic network coverage. During 2018 and 2019, the MAYOBS/REVOSIMA seismology group was progressively built between four French research institutions to improve instrumentation and data sets to monitor what we know now as an on-going exceptional sub-marine basaltic eruption. After the addition of 3 medium-band stations on Mayotte island and 1 on Grande Glorieuse island in early 2019, the data recovered from the Ocean Bottom Seismometers were regularly processed by the group to improve the location of the earthquakes detected daily by the land network. We first built a new local 1D velocity model and established specific data processing procedures. The local 1.66 low VP/VS ratio we estimated is compatible with a volcanic island context. We manually picked about 125,000 P and S phases on land and sea bottom stations to locate more than 5,000 events between February 2019 and May 2020. The earthquakes outline two separate seismic clusters offshore that we named Proximal and Distal. The Proximal cluster, located 10km offshore Mayotte eastern coastlines, is 20 to 50 km deep and has a cylindrical shape. The Distal cluster start 5 km to the east of the Proximal cluster and extends below Mayotte's new volcanic edifice, from 50 km up to 25 km depth. The two clusters appear seismically separated, however our dataset is insufficient to firmly demonstrate this.

Abstract

The Résif project, which started in 2008, aims at gathering under a common research infrastructure the French seismological, Global Navigation Satellite Systems and gravimeter permanent networks, as well as the mobile instrument pools. A central part of Résif is its seismological information system, Système d'Information de Résif (Résif‐SI) (started in 2012), which is in charge of collecting, validating, archiving, and distributing seismological data and metadata from seven national centers. Résif‐SI follows a distributed architecture, in which the six data collection and validation centers (A‐nodes) send validated data and metadata to a national data center (Résif Data Center [Résif‐DC]), which is the central point for data archiving and distribution. Résif‐SI is based on international standard formats and protocols, and is fully integrated into European and international data exchange systems (European Integrated Data Archive, European Plate Observing System [EPOS], Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology, International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks). In this article, we present the organization of Résif‐SI, the technical details of its implementation, and the catalog of services provided to the end users. The article is aimed both at seismologists, who want to discover and use Résif data, and at data center operators, who might be interested in the technical choices made in the implementation of Résif‐SI. We believe that Résif‐SI can be a model for other countries facing the problem of integrating different organizations into a centralized seismological information system.

Abstract

International audience; In order to understand the unprecedented underwater telluric event of the Mayotte Seismo-Volcanic (MSV) crisis (2018-2020), it appears essential to reach a critical level of knowledge on the evolution of the seismicity, volcanic activity and geodetic deformation, but also on the geodynamic context. This includes the kinematics and the characterization of the lithospheric and crustal structures, on both short- and long-term and regional and local scales. Towards this goal, the COYOTES project aims to better understand the regional geodynamic and geological context of the northern Mozambique Channel. The objectives are to understand the distribution of active and recent deformations around the Comoros Archipelago, in particular the Mayotte Island, to image the crustal structuration and to study the recent tectono-sedimentary evolution. Both the link with the East African rift system and the role of Mesozoic inherited structures in the spatial distribution of present-day deformation associated to the MSV crisis will be investigated. This updated geodynamic and geological knowledge will be used to improve the assessment of the volcanic and seismic hazards of the Comoros archipelago and especially around Mayotte. The main work-packages are 1) Current seismic sequence, deformation and kinematics; 2) Recent and active volcanism and tectonics in the Comoros archipelago; 3) Long-term geodynamics: Regional structuration and inheritance. It will integrate new onshore and offshore acquisitions of geological and geophysical data, their interpretation as well as modelling.The COYOTES project (http://www.geocean.net/coyotes/doku.php?id=start) is funded by the ANR (French Agence Nationale de la Recherche) for the period 2020-2024, involving three thesis, one post-doc and more than 30 scientists from the BRGM, IPGS/EOST, IPGP, IsTep, ENS, La Réunion University, EPOC, Ifremer, SHOM, GEOPS, LMV, GET, ISTO, OVPF, .... The project is linked with the SISMAORE oceanographic campaign that will occur on the R/V Pourquoi Pas? from December 2020 to February 2021.

Abstract

After an initial deployment of 8 low-cost seismological stations in 2017 around Strasbourg, the multidisciplinary citizen seismology project called SismoCitoyen was launched at the end of 2018. It combines seismology with research in human and social sciences. It aims to build a real network of observation sites in urban and peri-urban areas, from stations connected to the Internet and hosted by volunteer citizens, who will also participate in a survey conducted by sociologists. This poster was presented at the Résif Scientific and Technical Meetings held in Biarritz in November 2019. Résif is a national research infrastructure dedicated to the observation and understanding of the Earth's internal structure and dynamics. Résif is based on high technology observation networks, composed of seismological, geodetic and gravimetric instruments deployed in a dense manner throughout the French territory. The data collected allow the study of ground deformation, surface and deep structures, local and global seismicity and natural hazards, particularly seismic, on the French territory with a high spatio-temporal resolution. Résif is integrated into the European (EPOS - European Plate Observing System) and worldwide instruments that allow to image the Earth's interior in its entirety and to study numerous natural phenomena., Après un premier déploiement de 8 stations sismologiques à bas coût en 2017 autour de Strasbourg, le projet pluridisciplinaire de sismologie citoyenne appelé SismoCitoyen a été lancé fin 2018. Il associe la sismologie à la recherche en sciences humaines et sociales. Il vise à construire un véritable réseau de sites d'observation en milieu urbain et périurbain, à partir de stations connectées à Internet et hébergées par des citoyens volontaires, qui participeront également à une enquête menée par des sociologues. Ce poster a été présenté lors des Rencontres scientifiques et techniques Résif qui se sont déroulées à Biarritz en novembre 2019. Résif est une infrastructure de recherche nationale dédiée à l’observation et la compréhension de la structure et de la dynamique Terre interne. Résif se base sur des réseaux d’observation de haut niveau technologique, composés d’instruments sismologiques, géodésiques et gravimétriques déployés de manière dense sur tout le territoire français. Les données recueillies permettent d’étudier avec une haute résolution spatio-temporelle la déformation du sol, les structures superficielles et profondes, la sismicité à l’échelle locale et globale et les aléas naturels, et plus particulièrement sismiques, sur le territoire français. Résif s’intègre aux dispositifs européens (EPOS - European Plate Observing System) et mondiaux d’instruments permettant d’imager l’intérieur de la Terre dans sa globalité et d’étudier de nombreux phénomènes naturels.

Abstract

This poster presents the multidisciplinary project of citizen seismology, called SismoCitoyen, led by Eost, LISEC and SAGE. The project aims to build a real network of observation sites in urban and peri-urban areas, among private volunteers who also participate in a survey conducted by sociologists. Requiring no technical expertise, the equipment installed by Eost makes it possible to increase the mesh size of permanent institutional observation sites and thus improve seismicity detection and characterization, as well as the characterization of the associated seismic risk. They also aim to improve seismological imaging of the subsoil, in particular by passive methods based on seismic noise analysis. This type of experimentation is likely to increase and the modalities for integrating data into the Résif research infrastructure information system are being studied. The seismometer model used allows the host (or his relatives) to consult the recorded data online and in real time. This is where the "social sciences" component of the project comes in, which aims to observe and analyse the effects of citizen involvement in scientific research (via the hosting of a seismometer) on the perception and representations of seismology and micro-seismicity phenomena. LISEC and SAGE are conducting this study via two interviews, one during the installation of the seismometer and the other six to eight months later. The first operational phase of the project took place at the beginning of 2019 with the deployment of 25 stations in the Mulhouse region (Haut-Rhin). The SismoCitoyen project involves the BCSF-RENASS, a national observation service run by Eost, as well as IPGS, LISEC and SAGE. It is financially supported by the CNRS, the University of Strasbourg and the LabEx G-Eau-Thermie profonde., Ce poster présente le projet pluridisciplinaire de sismologie citoyenne, baptisé SismoCitoyen, conduit par l'Eost, le LISEC et le SAGE. Le projet vise à construire un véritable réseau de sites d’observation en milieu urbain et péri-urbain, chez des particuliers volontaires qui participent également à une enquête menée par des sociologues. Ne demandant aucune compétence technique, les équipements installés par l'Eost permettent de densifier le maillage des sites d’observation institutionnels permanents et, ainsi, d’améliorer la détection et la caractérisation de la sismicité, ainsi que la caractérisation du risque sismique associé. Ils visent également à améliorer l’imagerie sismologique du sous-sol, en particulier par des méthodes passives basées sur l’analyse du bruit sismique. Ce type d'expérimentation est appelé à se multiplier et les modalités d'intégration des données dans le système d'information de l'infrastructure de recherche Résif sont à l'étude. Le modèle de sismomètre utilisé permet à celui qui l’héberge (ou ses proches) de consulter en ligne et en temps réel les données enregistrées. C'est là qu'intervient le volet « sciences sociales » du projet, qui vise à observer et analyser les effets d’un engagement citoyen dans la recherche scientifique (via l’hébergement d’un sismomètre) sur la perception et les représentations de la sismologie et des phénomènes de micro-sismicité. Ce sont le LISEC et le SAGE qui conduisent cette étude via deux entretiens, l’un lors de l’installation du sismomètre, l’autre six à huit mois plus tard. The monitoring period extends from March 2013 to November 2014, which includes the stimulation of the first well of the doublet, the drilling of the second well and well tests. These data were acquired using 31 Earth Data Loggers PR6-24 and MARK-SERCEL L-4C-3D 1 Hz seismometers of the Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam (GIPP), which were provided to the KIT-AGW-Geothermal research division.

Abstract

Northeastern France and surrounding areas, like other intraplate zones, are vulnerable to earthquakes because of their population density, intense industrialization and fragile constructions. Most of the seismicity is distributed over the region; it expresses as low-to-moderate events (M<3), but episodic large earthquakes (M>5) also occur. The region's weak loading rates and poorly constrained active seismic structures lead to uncertain hazard models that influence risk mitigation policies. Available seismic catalogs, necessary for any seismic hazard estimate, suffer from common weaknesses: they are incomplete, due to past in-homogeneous station coverage, and they contain many non-earthquake events, due to high anthropogenic activity and poor systematic discrimination. Focusing in this intracontinental region, our goal is to build a new reliable catalog by improving both detection and discrimination of microseismicity. We have benefited from the recent development of European seismic networks, spearheaded by the AlpArray project and the concurrent growth of permanent national networks, to develop a method adapted to low detection thresholds and large data volumes. Our approach is a fully automatic procedure that integrates machine learning tools. After refining the detection protocol by optimizing SeisComP3's standard parameters, we have built two new real-time SeisComP modules. The first one enhances the SeisComP3 procedure that selects the best fitting origin for each event. The second one discriminates between well-locatable earthquakes, events outside the network, fake events, quarry blasts, and other events such as landslides. The discrimination is carried out by a Random Forest algorithm and labels each event automatically. Our methodology can be incorporated into real-time routine procedures of earthquake detection. Using these new modules, we have built a new discriminated regional seismic catalog for 2016-2018. The resulting decrease of the completeness magnitude and the improved estimates of hypocentral locations and magnitudes will allow us to conduct a reliable and detailed analysis of the seismicity in the region.
