Their outlook is eternally on stone or brick walls. Even the sky is circumscribed and shrouded in dust. There is limitation not only for the eye, but also for every sense.

This article presents information on several books. One of the book is "Civilization in the United States. An Inquiry by Thirty Americans," edited by Harold E. Stearns. This books describes the main features of the American civilization. Cooperative works, however, are never very even or very systematic, and in "Civilization in the United States" it is more important to look for the general unity of purpose and conscience to which the book lays claim. As a matter of tact, it does on the whole exhibit that unity.

In consequence, though the U.S. tried precisely as in Haiti to force a humiliating and enslaving treaty upon the Dominicans, they refused to sign. Where in Haiti today a dummy government carries out the occupation's wishes, a constant potential wedge to split the Haitians, in Santo Domingo absolute unity exists.

It marshals fact after fact and arrays incident after incident; waving aside hearsay and rumor. Respecting no locality, it covers metropolitan and country newspapers.
