The Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) has high economic value and is the primary aquaculture species in China. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) as a feed additive has demonstrated significant immunological benefits in aquaculture. However, its effects on the growth of aquatic animals are largely unexplored. This study explored the influence of licorice on the level of growth-related genes in Asian seabass by conducting an experiment using artificial feed with 0%, 1%, 3%, and 5% licorice. The impact on growth performance and the expression of several genes, including growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH), growth hormone (GH), growth hormone receptor (GHR), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), IGF2, IGF2 receptor (IGF2R), myostatin 1 (MSTN1), and myostatin 2 (MSTN2), were studied over 56 d. According to the results, the 3% and 5% licorice-supplemented diets significantly improved survival rates and weight gain compared to the control group. Licorice affected the level of growth-associated genes in Asian seabass and significantly increased the levels of GHR and IGF1 in the liver. However, a 5% licorice diet downregulated the expression of IGF2. As the licorice content in the diet increased, the levels of IGF2R and MSTN1 in the muscle tissue first decreased and then increased, and licorice addition inhibited the MSTN2 expression. The inclusion of licorice in the feed led to a significant downregulation of the GH and GHRH expression (p < 0.05). In summary, adding a certain proportion of licorice to the diet can improve the survival rate of the Asian seabass. The role of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) as a cheap carbohydrate (CHO) source was evaluated in L. vannamei larvae on the zootechnical indices and the countenance of growth, immune and antioxident genes in the liver and muscle tissues. The experiment includes two treatments, the control which feeds a commercial diet and the SCB treatment. It continued for 45 days in outside ponds in ternary (each supplied with six hundred shrimp larvae). The results revealed that both growth and survival rates of SCB treatment were significantly improved (P < 0.05) when versus to the basal. The hepatic (H) and muscular (M) genes expression increased considerably in the SCB treatment (P ≤ 0.05) versus control. The SCB treatment was the highest in all mRNA transcripts of studied immune-related genes. The expression of antioxidant genes superoxide destmutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in both H and M were increased significantly in SCB treatment relative to the control. Generally, the results highlight the importance of inclusion SCB in a zero water exchange system without an artificial diet ameliorates both zootechnical and immunity in L. vannamei.

Supplementation of phosphorus nanoparticles is a promising strategy to reduce water pollution, improve phosphorus concentration in fish diet, and provide better production quality. We used 300 fingerlings of Nile tilapia that were randomly distributed into 3 groups; each one was attributed to 5 replicates of 20 fish per aquarium with initial weight (gm) (156 ± 1.25). The first diet contained traditional Di-calcium phosphate (D-group), the second supplemented with phosphorus nanoparticles in a dose equal to the previous conventional one (N-D group), and the last one included with phosphorus nanoparticles with the half dose of the conventional phosphorus group (1/2 N-D group). After 3 months of feeding, the N-D group showed the best growth performance including its feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed intake (FI), or body weight gain (BWG). Furthermore, the growth-related gene expression findings considering growth hormone receptor (GHR) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) were upregulated as well. Moreover, whole body chemical composition revealed higher Fe, Zn, P, and crude protein level in the N-D group than the other two groups. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and fatty acid synthetase (FAS) mRNA expression showed a significant increase in 1/2 N-D and N-D groups compared with the control group. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can promote plant growth in various ways, allowing PGPB to replace chemical fertilizers to avoid environmental pollution. PGPB is also used for bioremediation and in plant pathogen control. The isolation and evaluation of PGPB are essential not only for practical applications, but also for basic research. Currently, the known PGPB strains are limited, and their functions are not fully understood. Therefore, the growth-promoting mechanism needs to be further explored and improved. The Bacillus paralicheniformis RP01 strain with beneficial growth-promoting activity was screened from the root surface of Brassica chinensis using a phosphate-solubilizing medium. RP01 inoculation significantly increased plant root length and brassinosteroid content and upregulated the expression of growth-related genes. Simultaneously, it increased the number of beneficial bacteria that promoted plant growth and reduced the number of detrimental bacteria. The genome annotation findings also revealed that RP01 possesses a variety of growth-promoting mechanisms and a tremendous growth-promoting potential. This study isolated a highly potential PGPB and elucidated its possible direct and indirect growth-promoting mechanisms. This work aims to determine the impact of dietary supplementation of polysaccharide, extracted from brown seaweeds Sargassum dentifolium on growth indices, feed utilization, biochemical compositions, microbial abundance, expressions of growth and immunity-related genes, and stress genes of the Pacific Whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. A total of 360 post-larvae of L. vannamei were randomly distributed into a 12-glass aquarium (40 L of each) at a stocking density of 30 shrimp with an initial weight of (0.0017 ± 0.001 g). During the 90-day experiment trial, all shrimp larvae were fed their respective diets at 10% of total body weight, three times a day. Three experimental diets were prepared with different seaweed polysaccharide (SWP) levels. The basal control diet had no polysaccharide level (SWP0), while SWP1, SWP2, and SWP3 contained polysaccharides at concentrations of 1, 2, and 3 g kg−1 diet, respectively. Diets supplemented with polysaccharide levels showed significant improvements in weight gain and survival rate, compared to the control diet. Whole-body biochemical composition and the microbial abundance (the total count of heterotrophic bacteria and Vibrio spp.) of L. vannamei showed significant differences among polysaccharide-treated diets compared to the control. At the end of the feeding experiment, the dietary supplementation of polysaccharide levels enhanced the expression of growth-related genes (Insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I, IGF-II), immune-related genes (β -Glucan-binding protein (β-Bgp), Prophenoloxidase (ProPO), Lysozyme (Lys), and Crustin), and stress genes (Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in the muscle tissue of L. vannamei. However, the current study concluded that the inclusion rate of 2 g kg–1 of polysaccharide as a dietary additive administration enhanced both weight gain and survival rate of L. vannamei, while the incorporation level of 3 g kg–1 reduces the abundance of pathogenic microbes and enhances the growth-, immunity- and stress-related gene expressions of L. vannamei. This study focuses on the relationship between myostatin (MyoS), myogenin (MyoG), and the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 (GH/IGF-1) axis for muscle growth and histopathological changes in muscle after an Aeromonas hydrophila infection. A total number of 90 Nile tilapia (55.85 g) were randomly allocated into two equal groups of three replicates each. The first group was an uninfected control group that was injected intraperitoneally (ip) with 0.2 ml phosphate buffer saline (PBS), while the second group was injected ip with 0.2 ml (1.3 × 108 CFU/ml) Aeromonas hydrophila culture suspension. Sections of white muscle and liver tissues were taken from each group 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 1 week after infection for molecular analysis and histopathological examination. The results revealed that with time progression, the severity of muscle lesions increased from edema between bundles and mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltration 24 h post-challenge to severe atrophy of muscle bundles with irregular and curved fibers with hyalinosis of the fibers 1 week postinfection. The molecular analysis showed that bacterial infection was able to induce the muscle expression levels of GH with reduced ILGF-1, MyoS, and MyoG at 24 h postinfection. However, time progression postinfection reversed these findings through elevated muscle expression levels of MyoS with regressed expression levels of muscle GH, ILGF-1, and MyoG. There have been no previous reports on the molecular expression analysis of the aforementioned genes and muscle histopathological changes in Nile tilapia following acute Aeromonas hydrophila infection. Our findings, collectively, revealed that the up-and down-regulation of the myostatin signaling is likely to be involved in the postinfection-induced muscle wasting through the negative regulation of genes involved in muscle growth, such as GH, ILGF-1, and myogenin, in response to acute Aeromonas hydrophila infection in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Simple Summary: Lysolecithin derived from hydrolysis of soy lecithin has been widely used as emulsifier in the feed industry to improve growth performance of farm animals for some time. The components of Lysolecithin have proved to have multiple functions, but the real mechanism of action of Lysolecithin on growth promotion in the animal is still unclear. To investigate how it works, we executed this trial. The results show that, besides improving growth performance of broilers, supplementation of Lysolecithin also improved ileal digestibility of amino acids. Further studies found that nutrient (amino acids and fatty acids) transporter genes in the small intestine and growth-related genes in the liver and muscle of broilers were significantly upregulated by supplementation of Lysolecithin independent of experimental diet nutrition level. Upregulating the nutrient transporter gene and growth-related gene expression of the host might be the action mechanism of lysolecithin on growth promotion in animals. By understanding its mechanism of action, researchers can develop new feed additives with better function and lower cost to promote the growth of farm animals and meet the ever-growing need for animal protein in the future. We investigated the effect and interaction of lysolecithin (LPL) and nutrition level on growth performance, nutrient ileal digestibility, expression of growth-related genes and nutrient transporter genes in broilers. A total of 1280 one day old Ross 308 mixed sex chicks with an average body weight 42.23 ± 2.4 g were randomly allotted into 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (20 replicates per treatment and 16 chickens per replicate) with two types of diet (Normal nutrition treatments starter, grower and finisher diets with ME of 3000 kcal/kg, 3100 kcal/kg and 3200 kcal/kg, respectively, and CP level of 22%, 21%, and 20%, respectively; high nutrition treatments diets with 50 kcal/kg ME and 0.5% CP higher than normal nutrition treatment at each stage). Two levels of LPL supplementation (0 and 500 mg/kg) were also employed. From day 21 to day 35 and full stage of the experiment, the birds fed a high nutrition (HN) diet had a greater body weight gain (BWG) and lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) than those fed a normal nutrition (NN) diet (p < 0.05). Besides, lysolecithin increased BWG significantly (p < 0.05). The birds fed a diet with LPL revealed increasing fat digestibility compared to birds fed the basal diet (p < 0.05). LPL significantly increased the ileal digestibility of amino acids, including Ile, Thr, Phe, His, Arg, Tyr, Glu, Pro, Gly, Ala (p < 0.05). No interaction was found between LPL and nutrition level in BWG, FCR and nutrient digestibility. In HN diet, the genes expression of myogenic differentiation 1 (MYOD1), myogenin (MYOG), cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36), fatty acid-binding protein (FABP1), cationic amino acid transporter 1 (CAT1) and Y + L amino acid transporter 1 (y+, LAT1) were significantly elevated via LPL supplementation (p < 0.05). In NN diet, LPL significantly increased the genes expression of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), MYOD1 and y+, LAT1 (p < 0.05). In conclusion, upregulating the nutrients transporter gene and growth-related gene expression of the host, independent of nutrition level changes, may be the action mechanism of lysolecithin on growth promotion in animals. In this study, we investigate the effect of the biofloc (BF) system using various carbon sources including sugarcane bagasse (SCB), rice bran (RB) and rice straw (RS) on growth parameters, hepatopancreatic digestive enzymes and the expression of growth‐related genes of white‐leg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the haemocyanin gene in small‐ and large‐sized Litopenaeus vannamei for 3 months reared in outdoor concrete ponds were also screened. The results showed that the growth and survival of shrimp in the RB and SCB groups were improved (p ≤ 0.05) and the same trend was observed for the digestive enzyme activities. The expression of different growth‐related genes including growth hormone, insulin‐like growth factor‐I and II, myosin and paramyosin was significantly increased in all biofloc groups reaching the highest levels in the RB group. The SNPs recorded in the haemocyanin gene between the small‐ and large‐sized L. vannamei revealed an insertion of Adenine at position 554 and a substitution at 1114 in large‐sized RS shrimp. So far, the RB group was attained the best growth, digestive enzyme activity and expression of growth‐related genes between different carbon sources. Sexual growth dimorphism is a common phenomenon in teleost fish and has led to many reproductive strategies. Growth- and sex-related gene research in teleost fish would broaden our understanding of the process. In this study, transcriptome sequencing of shortfin scad Decapterus macrosoma was performed for the first time, and a high-quality reference transcriptome was constructed. After identification and assembly, a total of 58,475 nonredundant unigenes were obtained with an N50 length of 2,266 bp, and 28,174 unigenes were successfully annotated with multiple public databases. BUSCO analysis determined a level of 92.9% completeness for the assembled transcriptome. Gene expression analysis revealed 2,345 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the female and male D. macrosoma, 1,150 of which were female-biased DEGs, and 1,195 unigenes were male-biased DEGs. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses showed that the DEGs were mainly involved in biological processes including protein synthesis, growth, rhythmic processes, immune defense, and vitellogenesis. Then, we identified many growth- and sex-related genes, including Igf, Fabps, EF-hand family genes, Zp3, Zp4 and Vg. In addition, a total of 19,573 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were screened and identified from the transcriptome sequences. The results of this study can provide valuable information on growth- and sex-related genes and facilitate further exploration of the molecular mechanism of sexual growth dimorphism. Expression of three growth‐associated genes, IGF‐I, IGF‐II and IGF acid‐labile subunit (IGFALS), was compared between highest and lowest growth performing families of Clarias magur being genetically selected for growth. Only IGF‐II and IGFALS showed 3.50‐ and 2.10‐fold differential expression, respectively, in RNASeq data of five pooled tissues, brain, liver, muscle, kidney and gonads. Relative expression profiling in brain, liver and muscle by qPCR showed 3.4‐fold and 2.8‐fold upregulation of IGF‐II in muscle and liver, respectively, in higher performing family compared with the lower ones, while IGF‐I was invariant and also the less expressed gene in all tissues. IGFALS expression was found to vary in accordance with IGF‐II. Genotyping of one non‐synonymous SNP (valine to isoleucine) identified in IGFALS revealed a significantly higher frequency of the isoleucine genotype in the high‐performing group. Present study shows that in magur, IGF‐Is significantly expressed not only in the liver but also in the muscle. Unlike other teleosts like cyprinids and cichlids where IGF‐I has been reported to be the major component in the somatotropic axis, IGF‐II is seen to be the major type in catfish, as also reported in Channel catfish, and is upregulated in high‐growth individuals. Recently, the high cost of aquafeed affected fish farming feasibility in some countries, including Egypt. The imported soybean meal and corn ingredients consume a large amount of the hard currency, thereby increasing feed prices. Thus, the current study investigated the different sources of soybean and corn on the performances of Nile tilapia. Fish fed with the diet I (based on Egyptian soybean meal cultivar and cornmeal cultivar) or diet II (based on imported soybean meal cultivar and cornmeal cultivar) in a 90-day feeding trial. The results showed no marked effects on the growth performance, protein efficacy ratio, and FCR in the case of fish-fed diet I or diet II. No histological alterations were observed in the skeletal muscle, hepatopancreas, spleen, and intestines, while the diet I-fed group showed normal architecture of the above-listed organs. The expression of liver and muscle IGF-1 showed no changes in fish-fed diet I or diet II. No diet-related variations were observed in IL-1β expression in the spleen but increased regulation in the liver of the diet II group compared to the diet I group. Furthermore, significant upregulation of SOD and HSP70 genes was seen in the spleen and liver of the diet II-fed group. We conclude that the inclusion of the Egyptian soybean meal cultivar and cornmeal cultivar (diet I) did not reduce the growth performance and immune-related genes compared with the imported soybean meal cultivar and cornmeal cultivar (diet II). To obtain transcriptomic insights into the growth regulation traits of Silurus lanzhouensis, this study employed de novo RNA sequencing to analyze the muscle transcriptome of the three heaviest (SLA) and three lightest (SLB) individuals from the same S. lanzhouensis family. Notably, the body weight, total length, and head length of the two groups were found to be significantly different (unpaired t test, P < 0.05). A total of 163,949 transcripts and 89,579 genes were identified, of which 843 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between the two groups (366 up-regulated and 477 down-regulated in the SLA group). The results were further validated via quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction of 16 selected DEGs and were deemed highly reliable. The differences in growth rates between the two groups were attributed to the DEGs associated with carbohydrate metabolism, cysteine and methionine metabolism, and cardiac muscle contraction. Hex-t2, Fbp2, and Pepck were the most promising candidate genes to explain the differences in growth rate between SLA and SLB. These results provide valuable insights into fish growth traits and may aid in the identification of biomarkers for the establishment of selection models for S. lanzhouensis and other cultured fish species. The current study investigated how different fasting and refeeding regimes would impact Nile tilapia growth performance, histopathological examination, and gene expression of myostatin, myogenin, GH, IGF-1, and NPYa. Nile tilapia fish (n = 120) were randomly allocated into four groups, including the control group fed on a basal diet for 6 weeks (F6), group A starved for 1 week and then refed for 5 weeks (S1F5), group B starved for 2 weeks and then refed for 4 weeks (S2F4), while group C starved for 4 weeks and then refed for 2 weeks (S4F2). Fasting provoked a decrease in body weight coincided with more extended starvation periods. Also, it induced muscle and liver histological alterations; the severity was correlated with the length of fasting periods. Gene expression levels of GH, MSTN, MYOG, and NPYa were significantly increased, while IGF1 was markedly depressed in fasted fish compared to the control group. Interestingly, refeeding after well-planned short fasting period (S1F5) modulated the histopathological alterations. To some extent, these changes were restored after refeeding. Restored IGF-I and opposing fasting expression profiles of the genes mentioned above thus recovered weights almost like the control group and achieved satisfactory growth compensation. Conversely, refeeding following more extended fasting periods failed to restore body weight. In conclusion, refeeding after fasting can induce a compensatory response. Still, the restoration capacity is dependent on the length of fasting and refeeding periods through exhibiting differential morphological structure and expressions pattern for muscle and growth-related genes. Abstract Background Scatophagus argus is a popular farmed fish in several countries of Southeast Asia, including China. Although S. argus has a highly promising economic value, a significant lag of breeding research severely obstructs the sustainable development of aquaculture industry. As one of the most important economic traits, growth traits are controlled by multiple gene loci called quantitative trait loci (QTLs). It is urgently needed to launch a marker assisted selection (MAS) breeding program to improve growth and other pivotal traits. Thus a high-density genetic linkage map is necessary for the fine mapping of QTLs associated with target traits. Results Using restriction site-associated DNA sequencing, 6196 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were developed from a full-sib mapping population for genetic map construction. A total of 6193 SNPs were grouped into 24 linkage groups (LGs), and the total length reached 2191.65 cM with an average marker interval of 0.35 cM. Comparative genome mapping revealed 23 one-to-one and 1 one-to-two syntenic relationships between S. argus LGs and Larimichthys crocea chromosomes. Based on the high-quality linkage map, a total of 44 QTLs associated with growth-related traits were identified on 11 LGs. Of which, 19 significant QTLs for body weight were detected on 9 LGs, explaining 8.8–19.6% of phenotypic variances. Within genomic regions flanking the SNP markers in QTL intervals, we predicted 15 candidate genes showing potential relationships with growth, such as Hbp1, Vgll4 and Pim3, which merit further functional exploration. Conclusions The first SNP genetic map with a fine resolution of 0.35 cM for S. argus has been developed, which shows a high level of syntenic relationship with L. crocea genomes. This map can provide valuable information for future genetic, genomic and evolutionary studies. The QTLs and SNP markers significantly associated with growth-related traits will act as useful tools in gene mapping, map-based cloning and MAS breeding to speed up the genetic improvement in important traits of S. argus. The interesting candidate genes are promising for further investigations and have the potential to provide deeper insights into growth regulation in the future.

Selenium and zinc are important dietary micronutrients having antimicrobial and antioxidant roles, thereby assisting in normal development, and an enhanced immune system. Supplementation of selenium and zinc for enhancing the growth performance and reproductive capacity in fish was explored in this study. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) were synthesized by high-energy ball milling (HEBM) using a 10-h dry milling technique at a 10:1 ball-to-powder ratio (BPR) and were premixed with basal feed followed by the administration to adult zebra fish (D. rerio) (2 months old) for 30 days. Growth analysis revealed that zebra fish fed with SeNPs + ZnONPs (2 mg/ kg, equimolar mixture) had significantly higher length and weight than only SeNP (2 mg/ kg) or ZnONP (2 mg/ kg) groups and control zebra fish (p < 0.05). The average length–weight relationships were assessed by estimating the condition factor (C), which was highest in the SeNP + ZnONP group (1.96), followed by a downward trend in SeNP (C = 1.15) and ZnONP (1.11) (p < 0.05). Relative gene expression of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 was significantly high in the SeNP + ZnONP group compared to other groups (p < 0.05), which indicated that combined administration of both the nanoparticles in basal feed enhanced the growth performance of zebra fish. Intracellular ROS generation was low in the combined group, followed by control, SeNP, and ZnONP groups, indicating higher concentrations of both nanoparticles, in particular, ZnONPs induced oxidative stress. Fecundity and the development of fertilized embryos were significantly high in the SeNP + ZnONP–treated zebra fish compared to only the SeNP- or ZnONP-treated group or control (p < 0.05). These findings indicated that supplementation of SeNP + ZnONP in basal feed could considerably improve the growth performance and development of zebra fish which could be exploited for enhancing aquaculture production.

We investigated the effect and interaction of lysolecithin (LPL) and nutrition level on growth performance, nutrient ileal digestibility, expression of growth-related genes and nutrient transporter genes in broilers. A total of 1280 one day old Ross 308 mixed sex chicks with an average body weight 42.23 ± 2.4 g were randomly allotted into 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (20 replicates per treatment and 16 chickens per replicate) with two types of diet (Normal nutrition treatments starter, grower and finisher diets with ME of 3000 kcal/kg, 3100 kcal/kg and 3200 kcal/kg, respectively, and CP level of 22%, 21%, and 20%, respectively; high nutrition treatments diets with 50 kcal/kg ME and 0.5% CP higher than normal nutrition treatment at each stage). Two levels of LPL supplementation (0 and 500 mg/kg) were also employed. From day 21 to day 35 and full stage of the experiment, the birds fed a high nutrition (HN) diet had a greater body weight gain (BWG) and lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) than those fed a normal nutrition (NN) diet (p < 0.05). Besides, lysolecithin increased BWG significantly (p < 0.05). The birds fed a diet with LPL revealed increasing fat digestibility compared to birds fed the basal diet (p < 0.05). LPL significantly increased the ileal digestibility of amino acids, including Ile, Thr, Phe, His, Arg, Tyr, Glu, Pro, Gly, Ala (p < 0.05). No interaction was found between LPL and nutrition level in BWG, FCR and nutrient digestibility. In HN diet, the genes expression of myogenic differentiation 1 (MYOD1), myogenin (MYOG), cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36), fatty acid-binding protein (FABP1), cationic amino acid transporter 1 (CAT1) and Y + L amino acid transporter 1 (y+, LAT1) were significantly elevated via LPL supplementation (p < 0.05). In NN diet, LPL significantly increased the genes expression of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), MYOD1 and y+, LAT1 (p < 0.05). In conclusion, upregulating the nutrients transporter gene and growth-related gene expression of the host, independent of nutrition level changes, may be the action mechanism of lysolecithin on growth promotion in animals.

The feasibility of Bacillus subtilis application on immune, growth, and stress responses in Litopeneaus vannmei has been assessed by evaluating changes over time of some immune, growth, and stress-related gene expression. A total of 315 L. vannamei weighted 0.78 g ± 0.08 (SE) divided to 3 experimental groups; frist group (T1) was considered as a control, second group (T2) fed B. subtilis supplemented daily throughout the experiment. In contrast, the third group (T3) fed B. subtilis supplemented diet for a week followed by a week of basal diet alternatively. The expression levels of Toll receptor (LvToll), Penaeidin4 (PEN4), Protein kinase C delta type (PKC-delta), Ras-related protein Rap-2a (PAP-2a), Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), and Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) were evaluated before and after Vibrio parahaemolyticus challenge. Results showed that down-regulation of LvToll, HSP70, and HSP90 expression levels was predominant in (T3) and transient up-regulation of PEN4, PKC, and RAP-2a levels expression in the same group in 1st and 7th week in which B. subtilis was supplemented. On the other hand, T2 showed up-regulation of lvToll and HSP70 in the 2nd and 12th weeks of trial, PEN4 in 1st, 2nd, and 7th weeks, HSP90 in the 7th and 12th weeks; up-regulation of PKC and PAP-2a was observed nearly upon the entire experimental period. Immune response against V. parahaemolyticus was on guard in (T3) than (T2). LvToll, PEN4, HSP70, HSP90, and PKC (T3) showed rapid upregulation in response to induced bacterial infection. RAP-2a responds to the bacterial challenge by significant down-regulation in both groups. This study suggests that the transient, weekly application of probiotic B. subtilis to shrimp may enhance the immune status, improve host stress tolerance, modulate proinflammatory responses, and trigger growth-associated responses of shrimp. Hybrid tilapia were produced from hybridization of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and blue tilapia (O. aureus). Comparative transcriptome analysis was carried out on the liver of hybrid tilapia and their parents by RNA sequencing. A total of 2319 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Trend co-expression analysis showed that non-additive gene expression accounted for 67.1% of all DEGs. Gene Ontology and KEGG enrichment analyses classified the respective DEGs. Gene functional enrichment analysis indicated that most up-regulated genes, such as FASN, ACSL1, ACSL3, ACSL6, ACACA, ELOVL6, G6PD, ENO1, GATM, and ME3, were involved in metabolism, including fatty acid biosynthesis, unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis, glycolysis, pentose phosphate pathway, amino acid metabolism, pyruvate metabolism, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. The expression levels of a gene related to ribosomal biosynthesis in eukaryotes, GSH-Px, and those associated with heat shock proteins (HSPs), such as HSPA5 and HSP70, were significantly down-regulated compared with the parent tilapia lineages. The results revealed that the metabolic pathway in hybrid tilapia was up-regulated, with significantly improved fatty acid metabolism and carbon metabolism, whereas ribosome biosynthesis in eukaryotes and basal defense response were significantly down-regulated. These findings provide new insights into our understanding of growth heterosis in hybrid tilapia.

Sexual growth dimorphism is a common phenomenon in teleost fish. However, the mechanism of this complex phenomenon remains unclear. The fine-patterned puffer (Takifugu poecilonotus; Temminck and Schlegel, 1850) exhibits female-biased sexual size dimorphism similar to other pufferfish. In this study, the transcriptomes of female and male T.poecilonotus were sequenced, 285.95 million raw read pairs were generated from sequence libraries. After identification and assembly, a total of 149,814 nonredundant unigenes were obtained with an N50 length of 3538 bp. Of these candidates, 122,719 unigenes (81.91% of the total) were successfully annotated with multiple public databases. The comparison analysis revealed 10,385 unigenes (2034 in females and 8351 in males) were differentially expressed between different sexes of T.poecilonotus. Then, we identified many candidate growth- and sex-related genes, including Dmrt1, Sox3, Spatas, Prl/Prlr, fabps, Ghr, and Igf1r. In addition to these well-known genes, Fabp4 was identified for the first time in fish. Furthermore, 68,281 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) loci were screened and identified in the transcriptome sequence of T.poecilonotus. The results of our study could provide valuable information on growth- and sex-associated genes and facilitate further exploration of the molecular mechanism of sexual growth dimorphism.

Penaeus monodon is one of the most economically important shrimp species in Thailand. However, little information is available about the functional genomics related to its growth performance. In this study, Illumina paired-end sequencing was used to analyze transcriptomes related to growth performance in P. monodon muscle. A total of 38.4 million reads were generated. The pooled reads, from 10 libraries, were de novo assembled into 113,991 genes, with an average length of 337 bp. Gene expression was analyzed with the edgeR program, which revealed 705 differentially expressed contigs (p < 0.05) in fastgrowth shrimp compared to slow-growth shrimp. The results show the 234 up-regulated contigs in fastgrowth shrimp are mostly underlined genes involving the metabolic pathway. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) revealed seven genes involved in the cell cycle that were expressed more in fast-growth shrimp (p < 0.05) than in slow-growth shrimp, and moderately to strongly correlated with shrimp body weight. Background: Scatophagus argus is a popular farmed fish in several countries of Southeast Asia, including China. Although S. argus has a highly promising economic value, a significant lag of breeding research severely obstructs the sustainable development of aquaculture industry. As one of the most important economic traits, growth traits are controlled by multiple gene loci called quantitative trait loci (QTLs). It is urgently needed to launch a marker assisted selection (MAS) breeding program to improve growth and other pivotal traits. Thus a high-density genetic linkage map is necessary for the fine mapping of QTLs associated with target traits. Results: Using restriction site-associated DNA sequencing, 6196 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were developed from a full-sib mapping population for genetic map construction. A total of 6193 SNPs were grouped into 24 linkage groups (LGs), and the total length reached 2191.65 cM with an average marker interval of 0.35 cM. Comparative genome mapping revealed 23 one-to-one and 1 one-to-two syntenic relationships between S. argus LGs and Larimichthys crocea chromosomes. Based on the high-quality linkage map, a total of 44 QTLs associated with growth-related traits were identified on 11 LGs. Of which, 19 significant QTLs for body weight were detected on 9 LGs, explaining 8.8–19.6% of phenotypic variances. This study investigated the effects of sodium alginate supplementation on gut microbiota composition, health parameters, growth performances and growth‐related gene expression of Malaysian mahseer. Five test diets were formulated by supplementing 0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.8% sodium alginate. Triplicate groups of juvenile Tor tambroides (2.19 ± 0.05 g) were stocked in 15 aquaria (20 individuals per aquarium) and fed at 3.0% body weight per day for 60 days. PCoA and UPGMA analysis showed that gut bacterial community were more convergence in higher sodium alginate‐supplemented diets. The percentage of Porphyromonadaceae, Bacteroides, Plesiomonas and Shewanella were substantially higher and Aeromonas, Entomoplasmatales and Prevotellaceae were drastically lower in higher sodium alginate (0.2%–0.8%) diets. Sodium alginate supplementation (≥0.2%) significantly improved the haematocrit value and respiratory burst activity of T. tambroides. Growth performances and feed utilization were significantly higher in 0.2%–0.4% sodium alginate‐supplemented diets. The increased growth rate of T. tambroides was governed by both hyperplastic and hypertrophic muscle growth. Real‐time PCR data demonstrated that most of the growth‐related genes were significantly upregulated in 0.2%–0.4% sodium alginate‐supplemented diet. Outside of the United States, China has become the major producer and consumer of channel catfish after experiencing rapid development in the past three decades. In this study, based on restriction site associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq), a high-density genetic linkage map of channel catfish was constructed by using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a F1 family composed of 156 offspring and their two parental individuals. A total of 4,768 SNPs were assigned to 29 linkage groups (LGs), and the length of the linkage map reached 2,480.25 centiMorgans (cM) with an average distance of 0.55 cM between loci. Based on this genetic linkage map, 223 genomic scaffolds were anchored to the 29 LGs of channel catfish, and a total length of 704.66 Mb was assembled. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and genome-wide association analysis identified 10 QTLs of sex-related and six QTLs of growth-related traits at LG17 and LG28, respectively. Candidate genes associated with sex dimorphism, including spata2, spata5, sf3, zbtb38, and fox, were identified within QTL intervals on the LG17. A sex-linked marker with simple sequence repeats (SSR) in zbtb38 gene of the LG17 was validated for practical verification of sex in the channel catfish. Thus, the LG17 was considered as a sex-related LG. Potential growth-related genes were also identified, including important regulators such as megf9, npffr1, and gas1. In a word, we constructed the high-density genetic linkage map and developed the sex-linked marker in channel catfish, which are important genetic resources for future marker-assisted selection (MAS) of this economically important teleost.

Abstract DNA methylation is susceptible to various environmental factors such as salinity, temperature and nutritional conditions, and can affect gene function, organ metabolism, body growth and development. In order to explore the effect of starvation on growth-related genes in large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea), we studied methylation of the global DNA and growth-related genes (MSTN1 , MSTN2,IGF1,IGF2) and the corresponding mRNA expressions, using ELISA-based technique, bisulfite sequencing PCR (BSP) technique and quantitative Real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) respectively. The results showed that the global DNA methylation levels were significantly different (p <0.05) between the experimental group and the control group at starvation 14d, 21d in muscle and at starvation 7d, 14d, 28d, and re-feeding 7d in liver. The CpG islands of MSTN1, MSTN2, IGF1 and IGF2 were enriched in exons rather than promoters. The proximal promoter of MSTN1 and IGF1 and the exon1 of MSTN2 had almost no methylation at all treatment stages. The methylation status in MSTN1 exon 1 and IGF2 exon 2 varied from different starvation time, and started to have significant differences on starvation 7d (p <0.05) both in liver and muscle. In the liver there was a strong positive correlation between IGF2 exon 2 methylation and global DNA methylation (r = 0.7558). The mRNA expression levels of these growth-related genes were significantly different at starvation 14d (p <0.05), but did not have significant correlation with the methylation of these exons. Transgenic Yellow River carp is characterized by rapid growth rate and high feed-conversion efficiency and exhibits a great application prospect. However, there is still a significant separation of growth traits in the transgenic Yellow River carp family; as such, growth-related genotypes must be screened for molecular marker-assisted selection. In this study, 23 growth-related candidate genes containing 48 SNP markers were screened through bulked segregant analysis (BSA) among transgenic Yellow River carp family members showing significant separation of growth traits. Then, two growth-related genes (Nos. 17 and 14 genes) were identified through combined genome-wide association study (GWAS) of candidate genes and validation of the full-sibling family approach. Nos. 17 and 14 genes encode BR serine/threonine-protein kinase 2 (BRSK2) and eukaryotic translation-initiation factor 2-alpha kinase 3 (Eif2ak3), respectively. The average body weight of three subgroups carrying the genotypes 17GG, 17GG + 14CC, and 17GG + 14TT of these two genes increased by 27.96, 38.28, and 33.72%, respectively, compared with the controls. The proportion of individuals with body weight > 500 g in these subgroups increased by 19.22, 26.82, and 30.92%, respectively. The results showed that appropriate genotype carriers can be selected from the progeny population through BSA sequencing combined with simplified GWAS analysis. Hence, basic population for breeding can be constructed and transgenic Yellow River carp strains with stable production performance and uniform phenotypic properties can be bred. Heterosis is important for sea cucumber breeding, but its molecular mechanism remains largely unexplored. In this study, parental lines of Apostichopus japonicus from Russia (R) and China (C) were used to construct hybrids (CR and RC) by reciprocal crossing. We examined the transcriptional profiles of the hybrids (CR and RC) and the purebreds (CC and RR) at different developmental times. A total of 60.27 Gb of clean data was obtained, and 176,649 unigenes were identified, of which 50,312 unigenes were annotated. A total of 414,536 SNPs were identified. A total of 7011 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained between the purebreds and hybrids at 45 days after fertilization (DAF), and a total of 8218 DEGs were obtained between the purebreds and hybrids at 75 DAF. In addition, a total of 7652 DEGs were obtained between 45 DAF and 75 DAF. The significant DEGs were mainly involved in the MAPK and FOXO signaling pathways, especially in the Ras-Raf-MEK1/2-ERK module, which may be a key regulator of development and growth in juvenile A. japonicus. In addition, we also identified key growth-related genes, such as fgfs, igfs, megfs and hgfs, which were upregulated in the hybrids (RC and CR); these genes may play important roles in heterosis in A. japonicus. Our study provides fundamental information on the molecular mechanisms underlying heterosis in sea cucumber and might suggest strategies for the selection of rapidly growing strains of sea cucumber in aquaculture. Black tiger shrimp ( Penaeus monodon ) is an economically important species for aquaculture in Vietnam; however, very little information is available regarding its transcriptome. In this study, we sequenced four transcriptome libraries from mRNA of heart, muscle, hepatopancreas, and eyestalk tissues of P. monodon individuals using the Illumina MiSeq® platform, yielding 78,575,346 raw paired-end reads. After quality control, a total of 62,327,726 paired-end reads were de novo assembled into 69,089 unigenes with an average size of 447.89 bp, N50 of 481 bp, and transcriptome size of 30.94 Mb. Comparisons of the assembled unigenes against five public protein databases identified 165 unigenes related to growth and development, and expression analysis revealed that 14,229 unigenes were differentially expressed among tissues. In addition, we detected 12,768 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) in 11,173 unigenes. This work provides candidate genes for trait mapping, marker-assisted breeding, genetic studies and functional genome annotation of P. monodon . Mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) is essential for the discovery of genetic structures that related to complex quantitative traits. In this study, we identified 264,072 raw SNPs (single-nucleotide polymorphisms) by double digest restriction site associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq), and utilized 3029 of these SNPs to construct a genetic linkage map in orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) using a regression mapping algorithm. The genetic map contained 24 linkage groups (LGs) spanning a total genetic distance of 1231.98 cM. Twenty-seven significant growth-related QTLs were identified. Furthermore, we identified 17 genes (fez2, alg3, ece2, arvcf, sla27a4, sgk223, camk2, prrc2b, mchr1, sardh, pappa, syk, tert, wdrcp91, ftz-f1, mate1 and notch1) including three (tert, ftz-f1 and notch1) that have been reported to be involved in fish growth. To summarize, we mapped growth-related QTLs in the orange-spotted grouper. Sexual growth dimorphism is a common phenomenon in teleost fish and has led to many reproductive strategies. Growth- and sex-related gene research in teleost fish would broaden our understanding of the process. In this study, transcriptome sequencing of shortfin scad Decapterus macrosoma was performed for the first time, and a high-quality reference transcriptome was constructed. After identification and assembly, a total of 58,475 nonredundant unigenes were obtained with an N50 length of 2,266 bp, and 28,174 unigenes were successfully annotated with multiple public databases. BUSCO analysis determined a level of 92.9% completeness for the assembled transcriptome. Gene expression analysis revealed 2,345 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the female and male D. macrosoma , 1,150 of which were female-biased DEGs, and 1,195 unigenes were male-biased DEGs. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses showed that the DEGs were mainly involved in biological processes including protein synthesis, growth, rhythmic processes, immune defense, and vitellogenesis. Then, we identified many growth- and sex-related genes, including Igf , Fabps , EF-hand family genes, Zp3 , Zp4 and Vg . In addition, a total of 19,573 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were screened and identified from the transcriptome sequences. In the present study, Senegalese sole eggs incubated at 20°C were reared at three different temperatures (15°C, 18°C or 21°C) during the pelagic phase, and then transferred to a common temperature (20°C) from benthic stage until 100days post-hatch (dph). Somatic growth, fast muscle cellularity and expression of 15 growth-related genes were compared at the same developmental stage for each temperature (pre-metamorphic larvae, metamorphic larvae, post-metamorphic larvae) and at 83dph and 100dph early juveniles. During pre-metamorphosis and metamorphosis, larvae from 21°C weighed significantly more than those reared at 18°C or 15°C (P <0.001). Relative growth rate (RGR) of pelagic larvae and survival of newly-settled larvae were also higher at 21°C (P <0.05). Furthermore, an increase in muscle growth towards the highest temperatures was observed concomitantly with an increase in gene expression, namely myogenic regulatory factors (MRFs), myosins, igf-I and fgf6. After transfer to a common temperature (20°C), the 15°C group initiated a process of compensatory growth, inverting relative growth rate values that became the highest, particularly between 83dph and 100dph (P <0.05). This increased growth effort in the 15°C group was accompanied by an up-regulation of gene expression in fast muscle, particularly in the 83dph juveniles. Mrf4 and myHC were up-regulated at 15°C and positive correlations with growth were also found for myog or pax7 (P <0.05). In contrast, mstn1 was down-regulated at 15°C (P <0.05), suggesting a boost in muscle growth. By 100dph, the 15°C group had already reached the same weight as the 18°C and the same length as the 21°C ones. At this age, the 18°C juveniles had the largest mean muscle fibre diameter (P <0.001), and thus fibre hypertrophy seems to be a major growth mechanism relatively to the other groups. The utilization of nanoparticle-based microalgae as aquaculture feed additives is a growing research trend. The present study examines the effect of conversion of Arthrospira platensis NIOF17/003 (AP) to nano-form on its phytochemical constituents , followed by a feeding experiment to investigate the dietary effect of nanoparticles of A. platensis , NAP (NAP 0.25% , NAP 0.5% , and NAP 1%) on growth, feed utilization, and growth-related gene expression of Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, comparing with negative (non-supplemented diet) and positive control (supplemented diet with normal Arthrospira). The shrimp postlarvae (0.124 ± 0.002 g) were allocated into glass aquaria (40 L; three aquaria per group) and fed the experimental diet for 90 days. The GC-Mass analysis revealed that the conversion of A. platensis to its nano-form induced notable phytochemical changes. The main phytochemicals of NAP were milbemycin B (66.68%), docosanoic acid, 1,2,3-propanetriyl ester (22.26%), and copper etioporphyrin (11.06%). The dietary supplementation of NAP in different levels improved all growth indices, survival, and feed utilization parameters compared to the negative and positive control at the same supplementation level. The weight gain, survival, and feed conversion ratio were improved by 66.11%, 23.51%, and 13.60%, respectively in group fed NAP 1% supplemented diet compared to the negative control. The expression of IGF-I and IGF-II were upregulated with NAP supplementation in a dose-dependent manner. Hybrid tilapia were produced from hybridization of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and blue tilapia (O. aureus). Comparative transcriptome analysis was carried out on the liver of hybrid tilapia and their parents by RNA sequencing. A total of 2319 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Trend co-expression analysis showed that non-additive gene expression accounted for 67.1% of all DEGs. Gene Ontology and KEGG enrichment analyses classified the respective DEGs. Gene functional enrichment analysis indicated that most up-regulated genes, such as FASN, ACSL1, ACSL3, ACSL6, ACACA, ELOVL6, G6PD, ENO1, GATM, and ME3, were involved in metabolism, including fatty acid biosynthesis, unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis, glycolysis, pentose phosphate pathway, amino acid metabolism, pyruvate metabolism, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. The expression levels of a gene related to ribosomal biosynthesis in eukaryotes, GSH-Px, and those associated with heat shock proteins (HSPs), such as HSPA5 and HSP70, were significantly down-regulated compared with the parent tilapia lineages. The results revealed that the metabolic pathway in hybrid tilapia was up-regulated, with significantly improved fatty acid metabolism and carbon metabolism, whereas ribosome biosynthesis in eukaryotes and basal defense response were significantly down-regulated. In the present study, different reference genes were isolated, and their stability in the skeletal muscle of fine flounder subjected to different nutritional states was assessed using geNorm and NormFinder. The combinations between 18S and ActB; Fau and 18S; and Fau and Tubb were chosen as the most stable gene combinations in feeding, long-term fasting and refeeding, and short-term refeeding conditions, respectively. In all periods, ActB was identified as the single least stable gene. Subsequently, the expression of the myosin heavy chain ( MYH) and the insulin-like growth factor-I receptor ( IGF- IR) was assessed. A large variation in MYH and IGF- IR expression was found depending on the reference gene that was chosen for normalizing the expression of both genes. Using the most stable reference genes, mRNA levels of MYH decreased and IGF- IR increased during fasting, with both returning to basal levels during refeeding. However, the drop in mRNA levels for IGF- IR occurred during short-term refeeding, in contrast with the observed events in the expression of MYH, which occurred during long-term refeeding. The present study highlights the vast differences incurred when using unsuitable versus suitable reference genes for normalizing gene expression, pointing out that normalization without proper validation could result in a bias of gene expression. Global aquaculture has expanded rapidly to address the increasing demand for aquatic protein needs and an uncertain future for wild fisheries. To date, however, most farmed aquatic stocks are essentially wild and little is known about their genomes or the genes that affect important economic traits in culture. Biologists have recognized that recent technological advances including next generation sequencing ( NGS) have opened up the possibility of generating genome wide sequence data sets rapidly from non-model organisms at a reasonable cost. In an era when virtually any study organism can 'go genomic', understanding gene function and genetic effects on expressed quantitative trait locus phenotypes will be fundamental to future knowledge development. Many factors can influence the individual growth rate in target species but of particular importance in agriculture and aquaculture will be the identification and characterization of the specific gene loci that contribute important phenotypic variation to growth because the information can be applied to speed up genetic improvement programmes and to increase productivity via marker-assisted selection ( MAS). While currently there is only limited genomic information available for any crustacean species, a number of putative candidate genes have been identified or implicated in growth and muscle development in some species. In an effort to stimulate increased research on the identification of growth-related genes in crustacean species, here we review the available information on: (i) associations between genes and growth reported in crustaceans, (ii) growth-related genes involved with moulting, (iii) muscle development and degradation genes involved in moulting and (iv) correlations between DNA sequences that have confirmed growth trait effects in farmed animal species used in terrestrial agriculture and related sequences in crustacean species. The resurrection grass S porobolus stapfianus Gandoger can rapidly recover from extended periods of time in the desiccated state (water potential equilibrated to 2% relative humidity) (Gaff and Ellis, Bothalia 11:305-308 ; Gaff and Loveys, Transactions of the Malaysian Society of Plant Physiology 3:286-287 ). Physiological studies have been conducted in S. stapfianus to investigate the responses utilised by these desiccation-tolerant plants to cope with severe water-deficit. In a number of instances, more recent gene expression analyses in S. stapfianus have shed light on the molecular and cellular mechanisms mediating these responses. S. stapfianus is a versatile research tool for investigating desiccation-tolerance in vegetative grass tissue, with several useful characteristics for differentiating desiccation-tolerance adaptive genes from the many dehydration-responsive genes present in plants. A number of genes orthologous to those isolated from dehydrating S. stapfianus have been successfully used to enhance drought and salt tolerance in model plants as well as important crop species. In addition to the ability to desiccate and rehydrate successfully, the survival of resurrection plants in regions experiencing short sporadic rainfall events may depend substantially on the ability to tightly down-regulate cell division and cell wall loosening activities with decreasing water availability and then grow rapidly after rainfall while water is plentiful. Hence, an analysis of gene transcripts present in the desiccated tissue of resurrection plants may reveal important growth-related genes. Recent findings support the proposition that, as well as being a versatile model for devising strategies for protecting plants from water-loss, resurrection plants may be a very useful tool for pinpointing genes to target for enhancing growth rate and biomass production. Sexual growth dimorphism is a common phenomenon in teleost fish. However, the mechanism of this complex phenomenon remains unclear. The fine-patterned puffer (Takifugu poecilonotus; Temminck and Schlegel, 1850) exhibits female-biased sexual size dimorphism similar to other pufferfish. In this study, the transcriptomes of female and male T.poecilonotus were sequenced, 285.95 million raw read pairs were generated from sequence libraries. After identification and assembly, a total of 149,814 nonredundant unigenes were obtained with an N50 length of 3538 bp. Of these candidates, 122,719 unigenes (81.91% of the total) were successfully annotated with multiple public databases. The comparison analysis revealed 10,385 unigenes (2034 in females and 8351 in males) were differentially expressed between different sexes of T.poecilonotus. Then, we identified many candidate growth- and sex-related genes, including Dmrt1, Sox3, Spatas, Prl/Prlr, fabps, Ghr, and Igf1r. In addition to these well-known genes, Fabp4 was identified for the first time in fish. Furthermore, 68,281 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) loci were screened and identified in the transcriptome sequence of T.poecilonotus. The results of our study could provide valuable information on growth- and sex-associated genes and facilitate further exploration of the molecular mechanism of sexual growth dimorphism. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as a kind of endocrine disruptors, can enter the fetus body cross the placental barrier from prenatal PAHs exposure to cause adverse birth outcomes. However, it is controversial association between prenatal PAHs exposure and low birth weight (LBW) of their infants. So the present study aimed to estimate the effects of prenatal PAHs exposure during the pregnancy on the risk of LBW in a Chinese cohort through modifying the DNA methylation states. A longitudinal prospective study with 407 pregnant women was established from May to October 2019. The prenatal PAHs exposure during the pregnancy was assessed using the internal dose such as the PAHs metabolites and PAH-DNA adducts in the umbilical cord blood. The methylation levels of genomic DNA and growth-related genes (IGF1 and IGF2) were assessed, while the expressions of these genes were both determined by RT-PCR and Elisa methods. The growth outcomes and relevant Z-scores were recorded at birth. The correlations between the DNA methylation status and concentrations of PAHs, expression levels of growth-related genes and body weight/WAZ were investigated as the measures. According to the PAH-DNA adducts, the subjects were divided into two groups: PAHs-exposed group (PAH-DNA adducts>0, n = 55) and non-exposed group (PAH-DNA adducts = 0, n = 352). Compared with the non-exposed group, it displayed marked decreased birth weight, and increased concentrations of PAHs and DNA methylation levels of the global genomic, IGF1 and IGF2 with their lower expressions in the PAHs-exposed group. These hypermethylation (global genomic, CpG14 and CpG15 of IGF1, and CpG14 of IGF2) were positively correlated with the contents of PAHs in the umbilical cord blood, and negatively correlated with the growth outcomes and their expressions. Selenium and zinc are important dietary micronutrients having antimicrobial and antioxidant roles, thereby assisting in normal development, and an enhanced immune system. Supplementation of selenium and zinc for enhancing the growth performance and reproductive capacity in fish was explored in this study. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) were synthesized by high-energy ball milling (HEBM) using a 10-h dry milling technique at a 10:1 ball-to-powder ratio (BPR) and were premixed with basal feed followed by the administration to adult zebra fish ( D. rerio ) (2 months old) for 30 days. Growth analysis revealed that zebra fish fed with SeNPs + ZnONPs (2 mg/ kg, equimolar mixture) had significantly higher length and weight than only SeNP (2 mg/ kg) or ZnONP (2 mg/ kg) groups and control zebra fish ( p < 0.05). The average length-weight relationships were assessed by estimating the condition factor (C), which was highest in the SeNP + ZnONP group (1.96), followed by a downward trend in SeNP (C = 1.15) and ZnONP (1.11) ( p < 0.05). Relative gene expression of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 was significantly high in the SeNP + ZnONP group compared to other groups ( p < 0.05), which indicated that combined administration of both the nanoparticles in basal feed enhanced the growth performance of zebra fish. Intracellular ROS generation was low in the combined group, followed by control, SeNP, and ZnONP groups, indicating higher concentrations of both nanoparticles, in particular, ZnONPs induced oxidative stress. Fecundity and the development of fertilized embryos were significantly high in the SeNP + ZnONP-treated zebra fish compared to only the SeNP- or ZnONP-treated group or control ( p < 0.05). Feed supplementation is so important to sustain the aquaculture industry. Research studies showed that sodium butyrate used as a feed supplement could improve the growth and health condition of fish. It is hypothesized that the use of sodium butyrate nanoparticles (SB-NP) as a feed supplement may improve the overall fish performance and welfare status than the ordinary-sized one. The current study was done to assess the effects of dietary supplementation with SB-NP on growth, digestive enzyme activities, intestinal histomorphometry, and expression of some growth-related genes of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) juveniles. Fish (25.3 ± 0.35 g) were fed on diets supplemented with 0.0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mg SB-NP/kg diet up to apparent satiation (thrice per a day) for eight weeks. Growth–stimulating effects of dietary SB-NP were significantly noted in regard to the final body weight, weight gain percentage, and specific growth rate with optimum levels of 1.0–1.5 mg SB-NP/kg diet. Furthermore, fish groups fed on diets supplemented with SB-NP significantly enhanced the feed intake over those fed on the control diet alongside with no significant differences in feed conversion ratio among the experimental groups. Pairwise comparisons with the control group showed that serum amylase, lipase, and protease activities were significantly increased (P < 0.05) with increasing the dietary levels of BS-NP, and their maximum activities were observed at levels of 1.0–1.5 mg/kg diet. The intestinal histomorphometric features of fish groups fed diets enriched with SB-NP showed increased villi length/width, crypt depth, surface absorption area, and goblet cells than the control group with optimum levels of 1.0–1.5 mg/kg diet. The expressions of growth-related genes in the stomach (ghrelin) and the liver (GH and IGF-1) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in SB-NP supplemented groups after eight weeks, with highest expressions at 1.0–1.5 mg/kg diet. Macrobrachium rosenbergii , the giant freshwater prawn, is an economically crucial freshwater shrimp that has been severely affected by slowing growth in recent years. In Gaoyou County, Jiangsu Province, China, Enterobacter cloacae infection frequently occurs in M. rosenbergii hatcheries, and E. cloacae has been detected with high prevalence in slow-growing prawns. In this study, the growth of prawns was found to be significantly reduced after E. cloacae infection. In addition, under co-culture of healthy and slow-growing prawns, slow-growing prawns were infectious and able to cause the slow growth of healthy prawns. The expression of growth-related genes after E. cloacae infection was analyzed, and differential expression of growth-related genes between slow-growing and healthy prawns was investigated. The results showed that the expression of CHIT3 , Cat , JHEH , EcR , and RXR was downregulated after E. cloacae infection and that of EcR was upregulated after E. cloacae infection. Similarly, the expression of CHIT3 , Cat , JHEH , EcR , and RXR was downregulated in slow-growing prawns compared to that in healthy prawns, and that of EcR was upregulated in slow-growing prawns compared to that in healthy prawns.
