6. High-precision low-level Cd isotopic analysis using MC-ICP-MS and its application to marine samples from Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica).

Abstract

This study presents the development, validation and use of an approach for precise and accurate cadmium (Cd) isotopic analysis at low concentration levels using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). The MC-ICP-MS unit used was equipped with a standard sample introduction system, thus using an ICP operated under wet plasma conditions, and Faraday cup amplifiers equipped with a 1013 Ω resistor. One-column anion exchange chromatography allowed isolation of Cd with 80-99% recovery and absence of an effect of potential on-column fractionation on the isotope ratio results was demonstrated. Use of both an internal (using Ag) and an external (measured in a sample-standard bracketing sequence) standard was relied on for correction of the bias introduced by instrumental mass discrimination. A long-term precision of 0.09& (2SD) for δ114/110Cd was achieved at a Cd concentration of 10 ng mL-1. The method developed was validated by analysing NIST SRM 2711a (Montana soil) and NRC TORT-3 (Lobster hepatopancreas) reference materials, yielding results consistent with literature values. Subsequently, the method was applied to two Antarctic marine organisms Adamussium colbecki and Trematomus bernacchii, collected during both the 1990s and 2020s, to investigate its potential for identifying changes in the biogeochemical cycle of Cd over time and reveal natural or anthropogenic sources. A preferential uptake of the lighter Cd isotopes in both species was observed, indicated by negative δ114/110Cd values ranging between -0.24 and -0.09&. This finding is consistent with previous studies that have reported Cd fractionation during its uptake by marine organisms, with a preference for the lighter isotopes. No significant differences in δ114/110Cd values were observed between organs of the same species or between the same species collected in the different decades, suggesting minimal Cd isotope fractionation during internal transfer and consistent Cd sources over time. Comparison with literature data suggests that the Cd source in Antarctic biota may be predominantly of natural origin, with δ114/110Cd values indicating isotopically heavier Cd than that found in Cd-polluted areas. 16. Chemical characterization of Arctic resuspended soils using trace elements and Sr and Pb isotope ratios

Abstract

Mineral dust emission and transport can occur at high latitudes, impacting the Earth’s radiative budget and snow albedo. Even though the Arctic region is not often considered as a relevant dust source, in a context of arctic amplification, the importance of high latitude dust (HLD) sources is increasing. Although there is still a lack of knowledge concerning HLD sources and their impact, previous studies have shown how the dust produced there, affects the high Arctic.In this work, we have characterised both potential HLD source areas through the resuspension of soil samples and potential receptor areas through filtration of snow samples. The potential HDL sources considered are Iceland, Alaska and Svalbard Island (Norway), while the second ones, were obtained filtering snow, firn or ice sampled on different Svalbard glaciers. 31 trace elements (TEs) were quantified using tandem ICP-MS on the filters loaded by soil resuspension. Moreover, the Sr and Pb isotope ratios were measured on the whole set of samples using a MC-ICP-MS unit at the A&MS Lab at Ghent University. Specific TEs can be used to recognize different patterns in dust originating from regions characterized by a different geological composition and the analyses of two different isotopic systems is useful in order to differentiate eventual dust sources characterized by overlapping signatures for one of the two elements.The proposed methodology is therefore promising for tracing dust emission and transport in the high Arctic and potentially to reconstruct past circulation patterns by investigating the dust composition in ice cores., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

Polar regions should be given greater consideration with respect to the monitoring, risk assessment, and management of potentially harmful chemicals, consistent with requirements of the precautionary principle. Protecting the vulnerable polar environments requires (i) raising political and public awareness and (ii) restricting and preventing global emissions of harmful chemicals at their sources. The Berlin Statement is the outcome of an international workshop with representatives of the European Commission, the Arctic Council, the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), environmental specimen banks, and data centers, as well as scientists from various international research institutions. The statement addresses urgent chemical pollution issues in the polar regions and provides recommendations for improving screening, monitoring, risk assessment, research cooperation, and open data sharing to provide environmental policy makers and chemicals management decision-makers with relevant and reliable contaminant data to better protect the polar environments. The consensus reached at the workshop can be summarized in just two words: “Act now!” Specifically, “Act now!” to reduce the presence and impact of anthropogenic chemical pollution in polar regions by. •Establishing participatory co-development frameworks in a permanent multi-disciplinary platform for Arctic-Antarctic collaborations and establishing exchanges between the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP) of the Arctic Council and the Antarctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AnMAP) of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) to increase the visibility and exchange of contaminant data and to support the development of harmonized monitoring programs. •Integrating environmental specimen banking, innovative screening approaches and archiving systems, to provide opportunities for improved assessment of contaminants to protect pol

Abstract

The measurement of 204Pb-based isotopic ratios by quadrupole ICP-MS has been investigated. After multivariate optimization of the main operating conditions (sample uptake rate, spray chamber temperature, quadrupole voltages), the isotopic ratios were measured with an internal precision of ∼0.4% (% RSD, n = 12) at the Pb concentration of 1 μg L−1 and ∼0.2% at 10 μg L−1, close to the values usually reported for the measurement of major isotopes by quadrupole ICP-MS. The external precision was ∼0.3% (% RSD, n = 35) and the bias, after the correction of the isobaric overlapping of 204Hg on 204Pb, was lower than 2‰. The applicability of the developed method in the environmental field was demonstrated by the analysis of a time series of 84 atmospheric particulate samples collected from the Arctic and characterized by low Pb concentration, obtaining data in good agreement with the isotopic composition of airborne particulate deposited in central Greenland. Abstract

Promezio is a famous Italian chemistry professor who is searching for missing element n. 61. In 1924 his laboratory is partially destroyed by a fire and he disappears. Almost one hundred years later high school students are recruited to investigate this strange case. “The strange case of Professor Promezio” represents a unicum in the panorama of laboratory activities for high school students: it is a cold case in which students are asked to investigate a fact that took place almost a century ago. Through the chemical analysis of different findings, the connection with historical events of that period, the study of the suspects' interrogation reports, the reproduction of the experiments conducted by Professor Promezio, the students will identify the possible culprit. Abstract

In this work, we applied X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and selective leaching experiments for investigating iron speciation in different dust advections collected on different unwashed quartz fiber filters. XAS analysis evidenced a predominance of Fe(III) in 6-fold coordination for Saharan dust and a trend towards Fe(II) and 4-fold coordination in the order: Saharan dust, mixed Saharan, and non-Saharan aerosol samples. The role of the sampling substrate was evaluated explicitly, including in the analysis a set of blank filters. We were able to pinpoint the possible contribution to the overall XAS spectrum of the residual Fe on quartz as the concentration decrease towards the blank value. In particular, the filter substrate showed a negligible effect on the structural trend mentioned above. Furthermore, selective leaching experiments evidenced a predominance of the residual fraction on Fe speciation and indicated the lowest Fe concentrations for which the blank contribution is mu g for the first three steps of the procedure (releasing the acid-labile, reducible and oxidizable phases, respectively) and 10 mu g for the last step (dissolving the insoluble residuals).
