It shows the reader how to achieve significant improvements in efficiency in terms of water use, energy consumption, water loss minimization, and water quality guarantees. The methods and approaches presented are illustrated and have been applied using real-life pilot demonstrations based on the drinking-water network in Barcelona, Spain. The proposed approaches and tools cover: - decision-making support for real-time optimal control of water transport networks, explaining how stochastic model predictive control algorithms that take explicit account of uncertainties associated with energy prices and real demand allow the main flow andpressure actuators—pumping stations and pressure regulation valves—and intermediate storage tanks to be operated to meet demand using the most sustainable types of source and with minimum electricity costs; - decision-making support for monitoring water balance and distribution network quality in real time, implementing fault detection anddiagnosis techniques and using information from hundreds of flow,pressure, and water-quality sensors together with hydraulic and quality-parameter-evolution models to detect and locate leaks in the network, possible breaches in water quality, and failures in sensors and/or actuators; - consumer-demand prediction, based on smart metering techniques, producing detailed analyses and forecasts of consumption patterns,providing a customer communications service, and suggesting economic measures intended to promote more efficient use of water at the household level. Control of drinking water networks is an arduous task, given their size and the presence of uncertainty in water demand. It is necessary to impose different constraints for ensuring a reliable water supply in the most economic and safe ways. To cope with uncertainty in system disturbances due to the stochastic water demand/consumption and optimize operational costs, this paper proposes three stochastic model predictive control (MPC) approaches, namely, chance-constrained MPC, tree-based MPC, and multiple-scenario MPC. This paper proposes a distributed model predictive control approach designed to work in a cooperative manner for controlling flow-based networks showing periodic behaviours. Under this distributed approach, local controllers cooperate in order to enhance the performance of the whole flow network avoiding the use of a coordination layer. Alternatively, controllers use both the monolithic model of the network and the given global cost function to optimise the control inputs of the local controllers but taking into account the effect of their decisions over the remainder subsystems conforming the entire network. In this sense, a global (all-to-all) communication strategy is considered. Although the Pareto optimality cannot be reached due to the existence of non-sparse coupling constraints, the asymptotic convergence to a Nash equilibrium is guaranteed. This paper proposes a reliability-based economic model predictive control (MPC) strategy for the management of generalized flow-based networks, integrating some ideas on network service reliability, dynamic safety stock planning, and degradation of equipment health. The proposed strategy is based on a single-layer economic optimisation problem with dynamic constraints, which includes two enhancements with respect to existing approaches. The first enhancement considers chance-constraint programming to compute an optimal inventory replenishment policy based on a desired risk acceptability level, leading to dynamically allocate safety stocks in flow-based networks to satisfy non-stationary flow demands. The second enhancement computes a smart distribution of the control effort and maximises actuators’ availability by estimating their degradation and reliability. This thesis is devoted to design Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategies aiming to enhance the management of constrained generalised flow-based networks, with special attention to the economic optimisation and robust performance of such systems. Several control schemes are developed in this thesis to exploit the available economic information of the system operation and the disturbance information obtained from measurements and forecasting models. Dynamic network flows theory is used to develop control-oriented models that serve to design MPC controllers specialised for flow networks with additive disturbances and periodically time-varying dynamics and costs. The control strategies developed in this thesis can be classified in two categories: centralised MPC strategies and non-centralised MPC strategies. Such strategies are assessed through simulations of a real case study: the Barcelona drinking water network (DWN). Regarding the centralised strategies, different economic MPC formulations are first studied to guarantee recursive feasibility and stability under nominal periodic flow demands and possibly time-varying economic parameters and multi-objective cost functions. Additionally, reliability-based MPC, chance-constrained MPC and tree-based MPC strategies are proposed to address the reliability of both the flow storage and the flow transportation tasks in the network. Such strategies allow to satisfy a customer service level under future flow demand uncertainty and to efficiently distribute overall control effort under the presence of actuators degradation. Moreover, soft-control techniques such as artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic are used to incorporate self-tuning capabilities to an economic certainty-equivalent MPC controller. Since there are objections to the use of centralised controllers in large-scale networks, two non-centralised strategies are also proposed. De esta manera, varios esquemas de control se desarrollan en esta tesis para explotar tanto la información económica disponible de la operación del sistema como la información de perturbaciones obtenida de datos medibles y de modelos de predicción. La teoría de redes dinámicas de flujo es utilizada en esta tesis para desarrollar modelos orientados a control que sirven para diseñar controladores MPC especializados para la gestión de redes de flujo que presentan tanto perturbaciones aditivas como dinámicas y costos periódicamente variables en el tiempo. Las estrategias de control propuestas en esta tesis se pueden clasificar en dos categorías: estrategias de control MPC centralizado y estrategias de control MPC no-centralizado. Dichas estrategias son evaluadas mediante simulaciones de un caso de estudio real: la red de transporte de agua potable de Barcelona en España. This paper addresses a chance-constrained model predictive control (CC-MPC) strategy for the management of drinking water networks (DWNs) based on a finite horizon stochastic optimisation problem with joint probabilistic (chance) constraints. In this approach, water demands are considered additive stochastic disturbances with non-stationary uncertainty description, unbounded support and known (or approximated) quasi-concave probabilistic distribution. A deterministic equivalent of the stochastic problem is formulated using Boole's inequality to decompose joint chance constraints into single chance constraints and by considering a uniform allocation of risk to bound these later constraints. The resultant deterministic-equivalent optimisation problem is suitable to be solved with tractable quadratic programming (QP) or second order cone programming (SOCP) algorithms. The reformulation allows to explicitly and easily propagate uncertainty over the prediction horizon, and leads to a cost-efficient management of risk that consists in a dynamic back-off to avoid frequent violation of constraints. Results of applying the proposed approach to a real case study - the Barcelona DWN (Spain) - have shown that the network performance (in terms of operational costs) and the necessary back-off (to cope with stochastic disturbances) are optimised simultaneously within a single problem, keeping tractability of the solution, even in large-scale networks. The general formulation of the approach and the automatic computation of proper back-off within the MPC framework replace the need of experience-based heuristics or bi-level optimisation schemes that might compromise the trade-off between profits, reliability and computational burden. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd., Peer Reviewed, Preprint

This paper addresses the management of drinking water networks (DWNs) regarding a multi-objective cost function by means of economically-oriented model predictive control (EMPC) strategies. Specifically, assuming the water demand and the energy price as periodically time-varying signals, this paper shows that the EMPC framework is flexible to enhance the control of DWNs without relying on hierarchical control schemes that require the use of real-time optimisers (RTO) or steady-state target optimisers (SSTO) in an upper layer. Four different MPC strategies are discussed in this paper: a hierarchical two-layer approach, a standard EMPC where the multi-objective cost function is optimised directly, and two different modifications of the latter, which are meant to overcome possible feasibility losses in the presence of changing operating patterns. In this paper we consider periodic optimal operation of constrained periodic linear systems. We propose an economic model predictive controller based on a single layer that unites dynamic real time optimization and control. The proposed controller guarantees closed-loop convergence to the optimal periodic trajectory that minimizes the average operation cost for a given economic criterion. A priori calculation of the optimal trajectory is not required and if the economic cost function is changed, recursive feasibility and convergence to the new periodic optimal trajectory is guaranteed. Water systems are a challenging problem because of their size and exposure to uncertain influences such as the unknown demands or the meteorological phenomena. In this paper, two different stochastic programming approaches are assessed when controlling a drinking water network: chance-constrained model predictive control (CC-MPC) and tree-based model predictive control (TB-MPC). Under the former approach, the disturbances are modeled as stochastic variables with non-stationary uncertainty description, unbounded support and quasi concave probabilistic distribution. A deterministic equivalent of the related stochastic problem is formulated using Boole’s inequality and a uniform allocation of risk. In the later approach, water demand is modelled as a disturbance rooted tree where branches are formed by the most probable evolutions of the demand. Drinking Water Networks (DWN) are large-scale multiple-input multiple-output systems with uncertain disturbances (such as the water demand from the consumers) and involve components of linear, non-linear and switching nature. Operating, safety and quality constraints deem it important for the state and the input of such systems to be constrained into a given domain. Moreover, DWNs' operation is driven by time-varying demands and involves an considerable consumption of electric energy and the exploitation of limited water resources. Hence, the management of these networks must be carried out optimally with respect to the use of available resources and infrastructure, whilst satisfying high service levels for the drinking water supply. To accomplish this task, this paper explores various methods for demand forecasting, such as Seasonal ARIMA, BATS and Support Vector Machine, and presents a set of statistically validated time series models. The control system architecture consists in a multilayer controller with three hierarchical layers: learning and planning layer, supervision and adaptation layer, and feedback control layer. This paper presents a model predictive control strategy to assure reliability in drinking water networks given a customer service level and a forecasting demand. The underlying idea concerns a two-layer hierarchical control structure. The upper layer performs a local steady-state optimization to set up an inventory replenishment policy based on dynamic safety stocks for each tank in the network. At the same stage, actuators health is revised to set up their next maximum allowable degradation in order to efficiently distribute overall control effort and guarantee system availability. In the lower layer, a model predictive control algorithm is implemented to compute optimal control set-points to minimize a multiobjective cost function.
