Building on the extensive exploration of metal oxide and metal halide perovskites, metal nitride perovskites represent a largely unexplored class of materials. We report a multi-tier computational screening of this chemical space. From a pool of 3660 ABN$_3$ compositions covering I-VIII, II-VII, III-VI and IV-V oxidation state combinations, 279 are predicted to be chemically feasible. The ground-state structures of the 25 most promising candidate compositions were explored through enumeration over octahedral tilt systems and global optimisation. We predict 12 dynamically and thermodynamically stable nitride perovskite materials, including YMoN$_3$, YWN$_3$, ZrTaN$_3$, and LaMoN$_3$. These feature significant electric polarisation and low predicted switching electric field, showing similarities with metal oxide perovskites and making them attractive for ferroelectric memory devices

We develop a method combining machine learning (ML) and density functional theory (DFT) to predict low-energy polymorphs by introducing physics-guided descriptors based on structural distortion modes. We systematically generate crystal structures utilizing the distortion modes and compute their energies with single-point DFT calculations. We then train a ML model to identify low-energy configurations on the material's high-dimensional potential energy surface. Here, we use BiFeO3 as a case study and explore its phase space by tuning the amplitudes of linear combinations of a finite set of distinct distortion modes. Our procedure is validated by rediscovering several known metastable phases of BiFeO3 with complex crystal structures, and its efficiency is proved by identifying 21 new low-energy polymorphs. This approach proposes a new avenue toward accelerating the prediction of low-energy polymorphs in solid-state materials.

We report the development of a combined machine-learning and high-throughput density functional theory (DFT) framework to accelerate the search for new ferroelectric materials. The framework can predict potential ferroelectric compounds using only elemental composition as input. A series of machine-learning algorithms initially predict the possible stable and insulating stoichiometries with a polar crystal structure, necessary for ferroelectricity, within a given chemical composition space. A classification model then predicts the point groups of these stoichiometries. A subsequent series of high-throughput DFT calculations finds the lowest energy crystal structure within the point group. As a final step, non-polar parent structures are identified using group theory considerations, and the values of the spontaneous polarization are calculated using DFT. By predicting the crystal structures and the polarization values, this method provides a powerful tool to explore new ferroelectric materials beyond those in existing databases.

In condensed-matter systems, competition between ground states at phase boundaries can lead to significant changes in material properties under external stimuli, particularly when these ground states have different crystal symmetries. A key scientific and technological challenge is to stabilize and control coexistence of symmetry-distinct phases with external stimuli. Using BiFeO3 (BFO) layers confined between layers of the dielectric TbScO3 as a model system, we stabilize the mixed-phase coexistence of centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric BFO phases with antipolar, insulating and polar, semiconducting behavior, respectively at room temperature. Application of in-plane electric (polar) fields can both remove and introduce centrosymmetry from the system resulting in reversible, nonvolatile interconversion between the two phases. This interconversion between the centrosymmetric insulating and non-centrosymmetric semiconducting phases coincides with simultaneous changes in the non-linear optical response of over three orders of magnitude, a change in resistivity of over five orders of magnitude, and a change in the polar order. Bismuth ferrite is one of the most widely studied multiferroic materials because of its large ferroelectric polarisation coexisting with magnetic order at room temperature. Using density functional theory (DFT), we identify several previously unknown polar and non-polar structures within the low-energy phase space of perovskite-structure bismuth ferrite, BiFeO$_3$. Of particular interest is a series of non-centrosymmetric structures with polarisation along one lattice vector, combined with anti-polar distortions, reminiscent of ferroelectric domains, along a perpendicular direction. We discuss possible routes to stabilising the new phases using biaxial heteroepitaxial strain or interfacial electrostatic control in heterostructures.

Multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) possesses a rich phase diagram that allows strain tuning of its properties in thin-film form. In particular, at large compressive strain, a supertetragonal (T) phase with giant polarization is stabilized over the more common rhombohedral (R) structure. To utilize the functionality of such metastable BFO phases in device applications, it is essential to understand the ferroelectric phase evolution upon insertion in nanoscale heterostructures. Here, we explore the emergence of ferroelectric phases close to the morphotropic phase boundary in compressively strained BFO during thin-film growth using in-situ optical second harmonic generation. We find that the epitaxial films form at the growth temperature in the ideal T phase without critical thickness for the polarization. Signatures of T-like and R-like monoclinically distorted phases only appear upon sample cooling. We furthermore demonstrate a robustness of single-domain polarization in the high-temperature T phase during the growth of capacitor-like metal|ferroelectric|metal heterostructures. Here, a reduction in tetragonality of the T phase, rather than domain formation, lowers the electrostatic energy. At this lower tetragonality, density-functional calculations and scanning transmission electron microscopy point to the stabilization of a new metastable R-like monoclinic structure upon cooling the heterostructure down to room temperature. Our results thus show that the combination of strain and electrostatic phase stabilization in BFO heterostructures yields a prominent platform for exploring ferroelectric phases and realizing ultrathin ferroelectric devices., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Dielectric capacitors hold a tremendous advantage for energy storage due to their fast charge/discharge times and stability in comparison to batteries and supercapacitors. A key limitation to today's dielectric capacitors, however, is the low storage capacity of conventional dielectric materials. To mitigate this issue, antiferroelectric materials have been proposed, but relatively few families of antiferroelectric materials have been identified to date. Here, we propose a new design strategy for the construction of lead-free antiferroelectric materials using interfacial electrostatic engineering. We begin with a ferroelectric material with one of the highest known bulk polarizations, BiFeO3. We show that by confining atomically-precise thin layers of BiFeO3 in a dielectric matrix that we can induce a metastable antiferroelectric structure. Application of an electric field reversibly switches between this new phase and a ferroelectric state, in addition, tuning of the dielectric layer causes coexistence of the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric states. Precise engineering of the structure generates an antiferroelectric phase with energy storage comparable to that of the best lead-based materials. We combine large-scale atomistic modelling with continuum elastic theory to study the shapes of graphene sheets embedding nanoscale kirigami. Lattice segments are selectively removed from a flat graphene sheet and the structure is allowed to close and reconstruct by relaxing in the third dimension. The surface relaxation is limited by a nonzero bending modulus which produces a smoothly modulated landscape instead of the ridge-and-plateau motif found in macroscopic lattice kirigami. The resulting surface shapes and their interactions are well described by a new set of microscopic kirigami rules that resolve the competition between the bending and stretching energies., Comment: 5 pages, 4 jpeg figures
