Abstract

We report on the design and the construction of a sounding rocket payload capable of performing atom interferometry with Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{41}$K and $^{87}$Rb. The apparatus is designed to be launched in two consecutive missions with a VSB-30 sounding rocket and is qualified to withstand the expected vibrational loads of 1.8 g root-mean-square in a frequency range between 20 - 2000 Hz and the expected static loads during ascent and re-entry of 25 g. We present a modular design of the scientific payload comprising a physics package, a laser system, an electronics system and a battery module. A dedicated on-board software provides a largely automated process of predefined experiments. To operate the payload safely in laboratory and flight mode, a thermal control system and ground support equipment has been implemented and will be presented. The payload presented here represents a cornerstone for future applications of matter wave interferometry with ultracold atoms on satellites.

Abstract

Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in free fall constitute a promising source for space-borne matter-wave interferometry. Indeed, BECs enjoy a slowly expanding wave function, display a large spatial coherence and can be engineered and probed by optical techniques. On a sounding rocket, we explore matter-wave fringes of multiple spinor components of a BEC released in free fall employing light-pulses to drive Bragg processes and induce phase imprinting. The prevailing microgravity played a crucial role in the observation of these interferences which not only reveal the spatial coherence of the condensates but also allow us to measure differential forces. Our work establishes matter-wave interferometry in space with future applications in fundamental physics, navigation and Earth observation., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Microgravity eases several constraints limiting experiments with ultracold and condensed atoms on ground. It enables extended times of flight without suspension and eliminates the gravitational sag for trapped atoms. These advantages motivated numerous initiatives to adapt and operate experimental setups on microgravity platforms. We describe the design of the payload, motivations for design choices, and capabilities of the Bose-Einstein Condensate and Cold Atom Laboratory (BECCAL), a NASA-DLR collaboration. BECCAL builds on the heritage of previous devices operated in microgravity, features rubidium and potassium, multiple options for magnetic and optical trapping, different methods for coherent manipulation, and will offer new perspectives for experiments on quantum optics, atom optics, and atom interferometry in the unique microgravity environment on board the International Space Station.

Abstract

Space offers virtually unlimited free-fall in gravity. Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) enables ineffable low kinetic energies corresponding to pico- or even femtokelvins. The combination of both features makes atom interferometers with unprecedented sensitivity for inertial forces possible and opens a new era for quantum gas experiments. On January 23, 2017, we created Bose-Einstein condensates in space on the sounding rocket mission MAIUS-1 and conducted 110 experiments central to matter-wave interferometry. In particular, we have explored laser cooling and trapping in the presence of large accelerations as experienced during launch, and have studied the evolution, manipulation and interferometry employing Bragg scattering of BECs during the six-minute space flight. In this letter, we focus on the phase transition and the collective dynamics of BECs, whose impact is magnified by the extended free-fall time. Our experiments demonstrate a high reproducibility of the manipulation of BECs on the atom chip reflecting the exquisite control features and the robustness of our experiment. These properties are crucial to novel protocols for creating quantum matter with designed collective excitations at the lowest kinetic energy scales close to femtokelvins., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The QUANTUS consortium started activities to perform atom interferometry on a sounding rocket in the year 2011. Three sounding rocket missions (MAIUS-1 to MAIUS-3) have been planned to demonstrate BoseEinstein condensation and atom interferometry with rubidium and potassium atoms. Two different payloads MAIUS-A and MAIUS-B have been designed qualified and integrated in the time frame from 2011 until 2020. The MAIUS-A scientific payload is capable of performing single species experiment with rubidium only and was used as a technology demonstrator in the MAIUS-1 mission. The MAIUS-1 mission was conducted in fall 2016. On the 23rd of January 2017 the payload MAIUS-A was launched on a VSB-30 sounding rocket. The payload created the first Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and performed atom interferometry aboard a sounding rocket with rubidium 87 atoms [Becker 2018]. Its successor MAIUS-B will be able to perform simultaneous experiments with Bose-Einstein Condensates of Rubidium-87 and Potassium-41 atoms. In order to achieve this ambitious scientific goal the experiments use various sensitive instruments imposing strong requirements on the thermal and mechanical design of the scientific payload. This paper gives a summary of the MAIUS-A and MAIUS-B scientific payload design with a focus on the thermal control system. Furthermore, the design of the GSE and the water cooling umbilicals is presented. The paper closes with an outlook on future atom interferometry payloads on sounding rockets and beyond.

Abstract

Background: The most widely accepted criteria for the evaluation of prognosis of malignant melanoma are histopathologic and clinical presentation. No currently available laboratory tests provide additional prognostic information. It has recently been suggested that reverse transcription and polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-based detection of tyrosinase messenger RNA (mRNA) in peripheral blood might be useful in the early detection of circulating tumor cells, since tyrosinase is thought to be a melanocyte-specific marker. Purpose: To further evaluate the clinical relevance of this potential marker, we examined peripheral blood samples from patients with malignant melanoma in different stages of disease for the presence of tyrosinase mRNA. Methods: Total cellular RNA was extracted from heparinized peripheral blood cells from 64 patients with malignant melanoma, from rive healthy control subjects, and from four patients with other cancers using the RANzol A method. For analysis of tyrosinase mRNA, RT-PCR was performed as previously described by Smith et al.; the sensitivity of this assay was tested using RNA extracted from human melanoma cells (SK-mel 1 and Sk-mel 3 cell lines) serially diluted with peripheral blood obtained from healthy control subjects. Two additional human melanoma cell lines (Sk-mel 30 and RPMI-7951) served as positive controls for RT-PCR detection of tyrosinase mRNA. Overall patient survival curves were constructed using Kaplan-meier estimates. Results: Tyrosinase mRNA was detected by RT-PCR assay of all four of the established melanoma cell lines tested. Nine of the 64 patients with malignant melanoma were found to have detectable tyrosinase mRNA in their peripheral blood cells (tyrosinase-positive patients). The 16 patients with localized primary melanoma did not have detectable tyrosinase mRNA in their peripheral blood cells. Among the 48 patients with metastatic disease, all 27 patients who exhibited no evidence of disease progression were tyrosinase negative. Notably, all nine tyrosinase-positive patients had visceral metastases and were found to exhibit disease progression at the time of the sampling. Four of the nine tyrosinase-positive patients were also found to test negative at times without evidence of progressive disease; one patient became negative after achieving stable disease and three became positive for tyrosinase transcripts on disease progression. The probability of survival from time of sampling was significantly lower in the nine tyrosinase-positive patients when tested versus the 23 patients with comparable disease but without detectable tyrosinase mRNA (two-sided; P[less than or equal to].05). Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that the detection of tyrosinase mRNA in cells in the peripheral blood by RT-PCR may be a useful prognostic marker for predicting tumor progression and poor clinical outcome in patients with malignant melanoma. Abstract

Abstract Background Aplastic anemia (AA) is a bone marrow failure syndrome mostly characterized by an immune-mediated destruction of marrow hematopoietic progenitor/stem cells. The resulting hypocellularity limits a detailed analysis of the cellular immune response. To overcome this technical problem we performed a microarray analysis of CD3+ T-cells derived from bone marrow aspirates and peripheral blood samples of newly diagnosed AA patients and healthy volunteers. Two AA patients were additionally analyzed after achieving a partial remission following immunosuppression. The regulation of selected candidate genes was confirmed by real-time RT-PCR. Results Among more than 22.200 transcripts, 583 genes were differentially expressed in the bone marrow of AA patients compared to healthy controls. Dysregulated genes are involved in T-cell mediated cytotoxicity, immune response of Th1 differentiated T-cells, and major regulators of immune function. In hematological remission the expression levels of several candidate genes tend to normalize, such as immune regulators and genes involved in proinflammatory immune response. Conclusion Our study suggests a pivotal role of Th1/Tc1 differentiated T-cells in immune-mediated marrow destruction of AA patients. Most importantly, immune regulatory genes could be identified, which are likely involved in the recovery of hematopoiesis and may help to design new therapeutic strategies in bone marrow failure syndromes.

Abstract

The MAIUS-1 payload is a high precision quantum optics experiment about to fly on a VSB-30 sounding rocket with the scientific objective to demonstrate the feasibility of creating the first Bose-Einstein condensates and performing atom interferometry in Space. To achieve these goals the experiment is using various sensitive instruments imposing strong requirements on the thermal and mechanical design. In the introduction this thesis gives a short overview and characterization of available microgravity platforms in Europe. Moreover a detailed characterization of the environment aboard the VSB-30 sounding rocket is presented based on flight data from former MASER and TEXUS missions. In the main chapters the mechanical and thermal design of the MAIUS-1 scientific payload is described in detail. This includes various technical solutions as for example a low-cost vibration isolation, a sealing for RADAX hull segments of pressurized payloads or umbilicals to provide water cooling until lift-off. In addition the test methods and results for the different payload components is presented. The design and test of the ultra-high vacuum system with a nominal pressure of 1E-10 hPa is described in a dedicated chapter. This includes theoretical background on outgassing of technical surfaces and calculation of the conductance of a vacuum system. Different pumping and sealing techniques are introduced. Furthermore the results of intensive testing of Conflat (CF) and Indium sealings under vibrational and static loads are presented as well as test results for the entire pumping system. The thermal control system of the MAIUS-1 scientific payload has been designed using multiple MATLAB codes in combination with ANSYS to estimate the heat flux into the rocket hull by aerodynamic heating during ascent as well as the heat transfer from the heated rocket hull to the system housing walls by natural convection. These codes and their theoretical background are presented herein as well. The thesis closes with recommendations and possible improvements for future space-born quantum optics experiments.

Abstract

In November 2015, the DLR Mobile Rocket Base will launch the MAIUS-1 rocket vehicle at Esrange, Northern Sweden. The MAIUS-A experiment is a pathfinder atom optics experiment. The scientific objective of the mission is the first creation of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in space and performing atom interferometry on a sounding rocket. MAIUS-1 comprises a two-stage unguided solid propellant VSB-30 rocket motor system. The vehicle consists of a Brazilian S31 motor as 1st stage, a S30 motor as 2nd stage, a conical motor adapter, a despin module, a payload adapter, the MAIUS-A experiment consisting of five experiment modules, an attitude control system module, a newly developed conical service system, and a two-staged recovery system including a nosecone. In contrast to usual payloads on VSB-30 rockets, the payload has a diameter of 500 mm due to constraints of the scientific experiment. Because of this change in design, a blunted nosecone is necessary to guarantee the required static stability during the ascent phase of the flight. This paper will give an overview on the subsystems which have been built at DLR MORABA, especially the newly developed service system. Further, it will contain a description of the MAIUS-1 vehicle, the mission and the unique requirements on operations and attitude control, which is additionally required to achieve a required attitude with respect to the nadir vector. Additionally to a usual microgravity environment, the MAIUS-1 payload requires attitude control to achieve a required attitude with respect to the nadir vector.
