We report the generation of a non-benzenoid polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbon, which consists of a biphenyl moiety substituted by indenyl units at the 4,4' positions, on ultra-thin sodium chloride films by tip-induced chemistry. Single-molecule characterization by scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy reveals an open-shell biradical ground state, with a peculiar electronic configuration wherein the singly-occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) are lower in energy than the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)., Comment: Manuscript: 7 pages and 3 figures. Indenofluorenes are non-benzenoid conjugated hydrocarbons that have received great interest owing to their unusual electronic structure and potential applications in non-linear optics and photovoltaics. Here, we report the generation of unsubstituted indeno[1,2-a]fluorene, the final and yet unreported parent indenofluorene isomer, on various surfaces by cleavage of two C-H bonds in 7,12-dihydroindeno[1,2-a]fluorene through voltage pulses applied by the tip of a combined scanning tunneling microscope and atomic force microscope. On bilayer NaCl on Au(111), indeno[1,2-a]fluorene is in the neutral charge state, while it exhibits charge bistability between neutral and anionic states on the lower work function surfaces of bilayer NaCl on Ag(111) and Cu(111). In the neutral state, indeno[1,2-a]fluorene exhibits either of two ground states: an open-shell pi-diradical state, predicted to be a triplet by density functional and multireference many-body perturbation theory calculations, or a closed-shell state with a para-quinodimethane moiety in the as-indacene core. Switching between open- and closed-shell states of a single molecule is observed by changing its adsorption site on NaCl., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures and supplementary information containing additional data. In scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments of molecules on insulating films, tunneling through molecular resonances implies transiently charging the molecule. The transition back to the charge ground state by tunneling through the insulating film is crucial, for example, for understanding STM-induced electroluminescence. Here, using STM, we report on the charge-state lifetimes of individual molecules adsorbed on NaCl films of different thicknesses on Cu(111) and Au(111). To that end, we approached the tip to the molecule at resonant tunnel conditions up to a regime where charge transport was limited by tunneling through the NaCl film. The resulting saturation of tunnel current is a direct measure of the molecule's charge-state lifetime, thus providing a means to study charge dynamics and, thereby, exciton dynamics. Comparison of anion and cation lifetimes on different substrates reveals the critical role of the level alignment with the insulator's conduction and valence band, and the metal-insulator interface state.

Controlling selectivity of reactions is a quest in chemistry. Here, we demonstrate reversible and selective bond formation and dissociation promoted by tip-induced reduction-oxidation reactions on a surface. Molecular rearrangements leading to different constitutional isomers are selected by the polarity and magnitude of applied voltage pulses from the tip of a combined scanning tunneling and atomic force microscope. Characterization of voltage dependence of the reactions and determination of reaction rates demonstrate selectivity in constitutional isomerization reactions and provide insight into the underlying mechanisms. With support of density functional theory calculations, we find that the energy landscape of the isomers in different charge states is important to rationalize the selectivity. Tip-induced selective single-molecule reactions increase our understanding of redox chemistry and could lead to novel molecular machines.

We report the on-surface synthesis of a non-benzenoid triradical through dehydrogenation of truxene (C27H18) on coinage metal and insulator surfaces. Voltage pulses applied via the tip of a combined scanning tunneling microscope/atomic force microscope were used to cleave individual C-H bonds in truxene. The resultant final product truxene-5,10,15-triyl (1) was characterized at the single-molecule scale using a combination of atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Our analyses show that 1 retains its open-shell quartet ground state, predicted by density functional theory, on a two monolayer-thick NaCl layer on a Cu(111) surface. We image the frontier orbital densities of 1 and confirm that they correspond to spin-split singly occupied molecular orbitals. Through our synthetic strategy, we also isolate two reactive intermediates toward the synthesis of 1 - derivatives of fluorenyl radical and indeno[1,2-a]fluorene, with predicted spin-doublet and spin-triplet ground states, respectively. By employing single charge injections with an atomic force microscope, we investigated redox reactions of a molecule on a multilayer insulating film. First, we charged the molecule positively by attaching a single hole. Then we neutralized it by attaching an electron and observed three channels for the neutralization. We rationalize that the three channels correspond to transitions to the neutral ground state, to the lowest energy triplet excited states and to the lowest energy singlet excited states. By single-electron tunneling spectroscopy we measured the energy differences between the transitions obtaining triplet and singlet excited state energies. The experimental values are compared with density functional theory calculations of the excited state energies. Our results show that molecules in excited states can be prepared and that energies of optical gaps can be quantified by controlled single-charge injections. Our work demonstrates the access to, and provides insight into, ubiquitous electron-attachment processes related to excited-state transitions important in electron transfer and molecular optoelectronics phenomena on surfaces.

Glaser-like coupling of terminal alkynes by thermal activation is extensively used in on-surface chemistry. Here we demonstrate an intramolecular version of this reaction performed by atom manipulation. We used voltage pulses from the tip to trigger a Glaser-like coupling between terminal alkyne carbons within a custom synthesized precursor molecule adsorbed on bilayer NaCl on Cu(111). Different conformations of the precursor molecule and the product were characterized by molecular structure elucidation with atomic force microscopy and orbital density mapping with scanning tunneling microscopy, accompanied by density functional theory calculations. We revealed partially dehydrogenated intermediates providing insight into the reaction pathway.

Carbon allotropes built from rings of two-coordinate atoms, known as cyclo[n]carbons, have fascinated chemists for many years, but until now they could not be isolated or structurally characterized, due to their high reactivity. We generated cyclo[18]carbon (C18) using atom manipulation on bilayer NaCl on Cu(111) at 5 Kelvin by eliminating carbon monoxide from a cyclocarbon oxide molecule C24O6. Characterization of cyclo[18]carbon by high-resolution atomic force microscopy revealed a polyynic structure with defined positions of alternating triple and single bonds. The high reactivity of cyclocarbon and cyclocarbon oxides allows covalent coupling between molecules to be induced by atom manipulation, opening an avenue for the synthesis of other carbon allotropes and carbon-rich materials from the coalescence of cyclocarbon molecules.

The charge state of a molecule governs its physicochemical properties, such as conformation, reactivity and aromaticity, with implications for on-surface synthesis, catalysis, photo conversion and applications in molecular electronics. On insulating, multilayer NaCl films we control the charge state of organic molecules and resolve their structures in neutral, cationic, anionic and dianionic states by atomic force microscopy, obtaining atomic resolution and bond-order discrimination using CO functionalized tips. We detect changes in conformation, adsorption geometry and bond-order relations for azobenzene, tetracyanoquinodimethane and pentacene in multiple charge states. Moreover, for porphine we investigate the charge-state-dependent change of aromaticity and conjugation pathway in the macrocycle. This work opens the way to studying chemical-structural changes of individual molecules for a wide range of charge states.

Using combined low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), we demonstrate hydrogen passivation of individual, selected dangling bonds (DBs) on a hydrogen-passivated Si(100)-2$\times$1 surface (H-Si) by atom manipulation. This method allows erasing of DBs and thus provides an error-correction scheme for hydrogen lithography. Si-terminated tips (Si tips) for hydrogen desorption and H-terminated tips (H tips) for hydrogen passivation are both created by deliberate contact to the H-Si surface and are assigned by their characteristic contrast in AFM. DB passivation is achieved by transferring the H atom that is at the apex of an H tip to the DB, reestablishing a locally defect-free H-Si surface.

Si dangling bonds without H termination at the interface of quasi-free standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG) are known scattering centers that can severely affect carrier mobility. In this report, we study the atomic and electronic structure of Si dangling bonds in QFMLG using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Two types of defects with different contrast were observed on a flat terrace by STM and AFM. Their STM contrast varies with bias voltage. In STS, they showed characteristic peaks at different energies, 1.1 and 1.4 eV. Comparison with DFT calculations indicates that they correspond to clusters of 3 and 4 Si dangling bonds, respectively. The relevance of these results for the optimization of graphene synthesis is discussed.

C60-functionalized tips are used to probe C60 molecules on Cu(111) with scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy. Distinct and complex intramolecular contrasts are found. Maximal attractive forces are observed when for both molecules a [6,6] bond faces a hexagon of the other molecule. The formation of extended electron states in one-dimensional nanostructures is of key importance for the function of molecular electronics devices. Here we study the effects of strong electron-phonon interaction on the formation of extended electronic states in intentionally created Cl vacancy pairs and chains in a NaCl bilayer on Cu(111). The interaction between the vacancies was tailored by fabricating vacancy pairs and chains of different orientation and separation with atomic precision using vertical manipulation. Small separation of divacancies led to the formation of symmetric and antisymmetric vacancy states and localized interface-states. By scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) we measured their energy splitting and broadening as a function of the inter-vacancy separation. Unexpectedly, the energy splitting between the vacancy states is enlarged by level repulsion resulting from phonon dressing of the electronic states, as evidenced by theory. Already for a few coupled vacancies we observe an emerging band structure of the defect band., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) have become important tools for nanotechnology; however, their contrast mechanisms on the atomic scale are not entirely understood. Here we used chlorine vacancies in NaCl bilayers on Cu(111) as a model system to investigate atomic contrast as a function of applied voltage, tip height, and tip functionalization. We demonstrate that the AFM contrast on the atomic scale decisively depends on both the tip termination and the sample voltage. On the contrary, the local contact potential difference (LCPD) acquired with KPFM showed the same qualitative contrast for all tip terminations investigated, which resembled the contrast of the electric field of the sample. We find that the AFM contrast stems mainly from electrostatic interactions but its tip dependence cannot be explained by the tip dipole alone. Force and conductance were simultaneously measured during the formation of Cu-C60 and C60-C60 contacts using a combined cryogenic scanning tunneling and atomic force microscope. The contact geometry was controlled with submolecular resolution. The maximal attractive forces measured for the two types of junctions were found to differ significantly. We show that the previously reported values of the contact conductance correspond to the junction being under maximal tensile stress.
