Abstract

A Programação Ágil – Extreme Programming (XP) – é uma das representantes dos actuais processos ágeis de desenvolvimento de software, que visam minimizar os riscos encontrados na actividade da programação de sistemas. O XP não nasceu no meio académico e, foi criada por Kent Beck em 1997 e embora tenham vindo a decorrer, há alguns anos, conferências dedicadas ao assunto, o número de publicações ainda é reduzido quando comparado ao de outras áreas da Informática. Na indústria, os resultados de sua adopção têm sido animadores, mas a comunidade científica tem demonstrado um posicionamento céptico visto que diversas práticas propostas contrariam conceitos amplamente difundidos e utilizados tanto nas universidades, quanto na indústria. Este artigo tem como propósito principal apresentar, genericamente, a metodologia XP, a sua origem e respectiva evolução histórica até aos nosso dias, com base na forma como as soluções para os projectos de software têm vindo a ser organizadas, assim como na análise dos problemas recorrentes na maioria dos projectos de software.

Abstract

Simira robusta (Rubiaceae), a new species from the Atlantic Rainforest of the Espirito Santo state, south-eastern Brazil, is here described and illustrated, and compared with similar species. It most resembles S. grazielae, from which it differs by the larger inflorescences, antrorse pubescent flowers and fruits, and by its larger fruits. Its habitat and conservation status are discussed. A key to the species of Simira from Espirito Santo state is provided.

Abstract

The regrowth of a C3 forage Stylosanthes capitata in a rain-fed field provided the weekly data collection in the southeast of Brazil during a heat event in autumn. A system named Trop-T-FACE simulated the free-air carbon dioxide enrichment and the enhanced temperature in four climatic regimes: current atmospheric conditions (Control), CO2 enrichment (600 ppm, eC), warming (2 °C above ambient canopy temperature, eT), and a combination of eC + eT. The area and biomass of foliage per shoot decreased, and the number of flowers per shoot and flowered ramification increased under single eC treatment besides the increment in palisade parenchyma of leaves. Increased investment in flowering in eC occurred notably when the soil water content was higher than 0.30 m3 m–3. Single eT treatment also impaired the area or biomass of foliage production per shoot, raised the shoot mortality, and promoted the increment of the spongy leaf parenchyma. There was some mitigation of the adverse effects of foliage production of eT or eC in eC + eT, but under this combined treatment, the shoot mortality also increased. Changes in leaf tissues under eC or eT or some mitigation of adverse effects in eC + eT did not offset the constraints on leaf growth per shoot. The harmful impact on foliage production by eC, eT, or eC + eT under rain-fed conditions indicated no advantages for feeding the livestock with the C3 forage S. capitata in expected climate change under field conditions. Abstract

Background and aim: PAC-SYM is widely adopted to asses constipation severity. However, it has been validated in a small sample, few items have been included based on expert opinion and not on empirical grounds, and its factor structure has never been replicated. We aimed at evaluating the psychometric properties of PAC-SYM in patients with chronic constipation. Methods: We enrolled 2,203 outpatients with chronic constipation in two waves. We used wave I sample to test the psychometric properties of the PAC-SYM and wave II sample to cross-validate its factor structure, to assess criterion validity, responsiveness to clinical change, and its minimal clinically important difference. Results: Only a minority of patients reported any rectal tearing (38 %). Deletion of such item leads to a 11-item version (M:PAC-SYM). The remaining items in the rectal domain were moderately correlated with the stool domain. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis revealed a bifactor structure with two subscales (stool and abdominal symptoms) and a general severity factor. The M:PAC-SYM demonstrated excellent reliability, moderate correlation with SF-12 and treatment satisfaction (r = 0.28–0.45), discrimination across Rome III criteria for functional constipation and abdominal pain, and responsiveness to clinical change (β = −0.49; ω 2 = 0.25). M:PAC-SYM minimal clinically important difference was 0.24. Conclusion: Our analysis shows that the rectal domain may not represent a relevant cluster of symptoms for patients with chronic constipation. We developed a modified version of the PAC-SYM which might better represent symptom severity of most patients seeking care in gastroenterology referral centers

Abstract

Background: The management of bloating is unclear and its relationship with patients' well-being and treatment satisfaction independent of other abdominal symptoms is uncharacterized. We evaluated the association of bloating with patient-reported outcomes. Methods: Thirty-nine centers for functional gastrointestinal disorders joined the laxative inadequate relief survey. We enrolled 2203 consecutive outpatients with functional constipation (FC) or constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) in two cross-sectional waves. Both wave 1 and 2 included the SF-12, the patient assessment of constipation-symptoms (PAC-SYM), and the treatment satisfaction questionnaire for medication (TSQM-2). Wave 2 only included a global rating of change (GRC) scale to assess patients' assessment of efficacy concerning treatment switches occurred in the 3 months prior to the interview. Bloating in the abdomen was defined on the basis of PAC-SYM item 3. Key Results: The average age was 50.1 years (SD, 16.7) and 82.1% of patients were women. The prevalence of bloating was 91.6% (n = 1970). Bloating was associated with SF-12 Physical Composite Score (p < 0.01), SF-12 Mental Composite Score (p < 0.01), GRC (p < 0.01), Satisfaction with treatment effectiveness (p < 0.01), convenience of administration (p < 0.01), and side effects (p < 0.01) after adjustment for possible confounders. Conclusions & Inferences: Our data suggest that patients regard bloating as a key element in assessing clinical changes and treatments' efficacy as this symptom exerts a strong influence on patient-reported outcomes independent of possible confounders and other symptoms of constipation. Our data provide the rationale to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of new treatments specifically addressing this important, yet disregarded, patients' complain.

Abstract

The antimycobacterial activity of an extract of Usnea steineri and of its major constituent (+)-usnic acid was evaluated against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (ATCC 27294), Mycobacterium kansasii (ATCC 12478) and Mycobacterium avium (ATCC 15769). The acetone extract (ACE) of U. steineri displayed promising minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 32 ìg/ml against M. tuberculosis and 62 ìg/ml against both M. kansasii and M. avium. The isolated compound (+)-usnic acid was even more effective against the evaluated microorganisms with MIC values of 16 ìg/ml against M. avium and 8 ìg/ml against both M. tuberculosis and M. kansasii.Key words: Usnea, usnic acid, antimycobacterial activity.
