This document is on considerations and findings on modelling of spinning beams. Spinning has been proposed for stabilizing beams against perturbations notably risen by non-linear space charge forces, see [Y.-L. Cheon et al., Effects of beam spinning on the fourth-order particle resonance of 3D bunched beams in high-intensity linear accelerators, Phys. Rev. Accel. & Beams 25, 064002 (2022)]. Although not further treated therein, spinning can be quantified by angular momentumor by vorticity. Considering vorticity revealed that the latter has remarkable similarity w.r.t. its modelling along solenoid channels to modelling the beam envelope. Matrices of vorticity transport, corresponding phase advances, and Twiss parameters look very similar and are partially even identical to their counterparts concerning envelopes. Corresponding to emittance, the quantity of vortissance, being a constant of motion, is defined. Unlike emittance, for vorticity-dominated beams it may take imaginary values, causing Twiss parameters, and negative or zero phase advances along a finite beam line section. Particle beam eigen-emittances comprise the lowest set of rms-emittances that can be imposed to a beam through symplectic optical elements. For cases of practical relevance this paper introduces an approximation providing a very simple and powerful relation between transverse eigen-emittance variation and the beam phase integral. This relation enormously facilitates modeling eigen-emittance tailoring scenarios. It reveals that difference of eigen-emittances is given by the beam phase integral or vorticity rather than by angular momentum. Within the approximation any beam is equivalent to two objects rotating at angular velocities of same strength and different sign. A description through circular beam modes has been done already in [A. Burov, S. Nagaitsev, and Y. Derbenev, Circular modes, beam adapters, and their applications in beam optics, Phys. Rev. E 66, 016503 (2002)]. The new relation presented here is a complementary and vivid approach to provide a physical picture of the nature of eigen-emittances for cases of practical interest., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

A dedicated device to fully determine the four-dimensional beam matrix, called ROSE (ROtating System for Emittance measurements) was successfully commissioned. Results obtained with 83Kr13+ at 1.4 MeV/u are reported in Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 19, 072802 (2016). Coupled moments were determined with an accuracy of about 10%, which is sufficiently low to reliably determine a lattice which could decouple the beam. However, the remaining uncertainty on the corresponding eigen emittances was still considerable high. The present paper reports on improvement of the evaluation procedure which lowers the inaccuracy of measured eigen emittances significantly to the percent level. The method is based on trimming directly measured data within their intrinsic measurement resolution such that the finally resulting quantity is determined with high precision.

In 1926, H. Busch formulated a theorem for one single charged particle moving along a region with a longitudinal magnetic field [H. Busch, Berechnung der Bahn von Kathodenstrahlen in axial symmetrischen electromagnetischen Felde, Z. Phys. 81 (5) p. 974, (1926)]. The theorem relates particle angular momentum to the amount of field lines being enclosed by the particle cyclotron motion. This paper extends the theorem to many particles forming a beam without cylindrical symmetry. A quantity being preserved is derived, which represents the sum of difference of eigen-emittances, magnetic flux through the beam area, and beam rms-vorticity multiplied by the magnetic flux. Tracking simulations and analytical calculations using the generalized Courant-Snyder formalism confirm the validity of the extended theorem. The new theorem has been applied for fast modelling of experiments with electron and ion beams on transverse emittance re-partitioning conducted at FERMILAB and at GSI., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Knowledge of the transverse four-dimensional beam rms-parameters is essential for applications that involve lattice elements that couple the two transverse degrees of freedom (planes). Of special interest is the removal of inter-plane correlations to reduce the projected emittances. A dedicated ROtating System for Emittance measurements (ROSE) has been proposed, developed, and successfully commissioned to fully determine the four-dimensional beam matrix. This device has been used at the High Charge injector (HLI) at GSI using a beam line which is composed of a skew quadrupole triplet, a normal quadrupole doublet, and ROSE. Mathematical algorithms, measurements, and results for ion beams of 83Kr13+ at 1.4 MeV/u are reported in this paper., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

A new 4-rod RFQ was commissioned at the UNILAC in 2009, it went into operation in 2010. At high rf amplitudes strong modulations of the rf reflection emerge. They are attributed to mechanical oscillations of the rods, excited by the rf pulse. As these modulations could so far only be seen during the rf pulse by means of rf measurements, a direct observation of the mechanical vibrations was desirable. Such measurements have been conducted using a commercial laser vibrometer, allowing the investigation of the mechanical behavior of the RFQ in situ and independent of the presence of rf power. Results from investigations under standard operation conditions confirm the vibrations as the source of the modulations observed by rf as well as their excitation by the rf pulse. Further measurements revealed more details about the excitation process, leading to a better understanding and possibly new ways of mitigation., Comment: Proc. The performance of accelerators profits from phase space tailoring by coupling of planes. The previously applied techniques swap the emittances among the three planes but the set of available emittances is fixed. In contrast to these emittance exchange scenarios the emittance transfer scenario presented here allows for arbitrarily changing the set of emittances as long as the product of the emittances is preserved. This letter is on the first experimental demonstration of transverse emittance transfer along an ion beam line. The amount of transfer is chosen by setting just one single magnetic field value. The envelope-functions (beta) and -slopes (alpha) of the finally uncorrelated and re-partitioned beam at the exit of the transfer line do not depend on the amount of transfer., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Flat beams feature unequal emittances in the horizontal and vertical phase space. Those beams were created successfully in lepton machines. Although a number of applications will profit also from flat hadron beams, to our knowledge they have never been created systematically. Multi-turn injection schemes, spectrometers, and colliders will directly benefit from those beams. The present paper covers the preparation of the experimental proof of principle for flat hadron beam creation in a beam transport section. Detailed simulations of the experiment, based on charge state stripping inside of a solenoid [L. Groening, Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams 14, 064201 (2011)], are performed. The matrix formalism was benchmarked with tracking through three-dimensional magnetic field maps of solenoids. An error analysis targeting at investigation of the impact of machine errors on the round-to-flat beam transformation has been performed. The remarkable flexibility of the set-up w.r.t. decoupling is addressed, as it can provide an one-knob tool to set the horizontal and vertical emittance partitioning. Bunches of high charge (up to 10 nC) are compressed in length in the CTF II magnetic chicane to less than 0.2 mm rms. The short bunches radiate coherently in the chicane magnetic field, and the horizontal and longitudinal phase space density distributions are affected. This paper reports the results of beam emittance and momentum measurements. Horizontal and vertical emittances and momentum spectra were measured for different bunch compression factors and bunch charges. In particular, for 10 nC bunches, the mean beam momentum decreased by about 5% while the FWHM momentum spread increased from 5% to 19%.
