5G and beyond cellular systems embrace the disaggregation of Radio Access Network (RAN) components, exemplified by the evolution of the fronthual (FH) connection between cellular baseband and radio unit equipment. Crucially, synchronization over the FH is pivotal for reliable 5G services. In recent years, there has been a push to move these links to an Ethernet-based packet network topology, leveraging existing standards and ongoing research for Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). However, TSN standards, such as Precision Time Protocol (PTP), focus on performance with little to no concern for security. This increases the exposure of the open FH to security risks. Attacks targeting synchronization mechanisms pose significant threats, potentially disrupting 5G networks and impairing connectivity. In this paper, we demonstrate the impact of successful spoofing and replay attacks against PTP synchronization. We show how a spoofing attack is able to cause a production-ready O-RAN and 5G-compliant private cellular base station to catastrophically fail within 2 seconds of the attack, necessitating manual intervention to restore full network operations. To counter this, we design a Machine Learning (ML)-based monitoring solution capable of detecting various malicious attacks with over 97.5% accuracy.

Reliable simulations are critical for analyzing and understanding complex systems, but their accuracy depends on correct input data. Incorrect inputs such as invalid or out-of-range values, missing data, and format inconsistencies can cause simulation crashes or unnoticed result distortions, ultimately undermining the validity of the conclusions. This paper presents a methodology for verifying the validity of input data in simulations, a process we term model input verification (MIV). We implement this approach in FabGuard, a toolset that uses established data schema and validation tools for the specific needs of simulation modeling. We introduce a formalism for categorizing MIV patterns and offer a streamlined verification pipeline that integrates into existing simulation workflows. FabGuard's applicability is demonstrated across three diverse domains: conflict-driven migration, disaster evacuation, and disease spread models. We also explore the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for automating constraint generation and inference. In a case study with a migration simulation, LLMs not only correctly inferred 22 out of 23 developer-defined constraints, but also identified errors in existing constraints and proposed new, valid constraints. Our evaluation demonstrates that MIV is feasible on large datasets, with FabGuard efficiently processing 12,000 input files in 140 seconds and maintaining consistent performance across varying file sizes.

The farming domain has seen a tremendous shift towards digital solutions. However, capturing farmers' requirements regarding Digital Farming (DF) technology remains a difficult task due to domain-specific challenges. Farmers form a diverse and international crowd of practitioners who use a common pool of agricultural products and services, which means we can consider the possibility of applying Crowd-based Requirements Engineering (CrowdRE) for DF: CrowdRE4DF. We found that online user feedback in this domain is limited, necessitating a way of capturing user feedback from farmers in situ. Our solution, the Farmers' Voice application, uses speech-to-text, Machine Learning (ML), and Web 2.0 technology. A preliminary evaluation with five farmers showed good technology acceptance, and accurate transcription and ML analysis even in noisy farm settings. In an era of rapidly advancing data-driven applications, there is a growing demand for data in both research and practice. Synthetic data have emerged as an alternative when no real data is available (e.g., due to privacy regulations). Synthesizing tabular data presents unique and complex challenges, especially handling (i) missing values, (ii) dataset imbalance, (iii) diverse column types, and (iv) complex data distributions, as well as preserving (i) column correlations, (ii) temporal dependencies, and (iii) integrity constraints (e.g., functional dependencies) present in the original dataset. While substantial progress has been made recently in the context of generational models, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for tabular data today, and choosing the right tool for a given task is therefore no trivial task. In this paper, we survey the state of the art in Tabular Data Synthesis (TDS), examine the needs of users by defining a set of functional and non-functional requirements, and compile the challenges associated with meeting those needs. In addition, we evaluate the reported performance of 36 popular research TDS tools about these requirements and develop a decision guide to help users find suitable TDS tools for their applications. This paper concerns the characteristic-$p$ fibers of $\mathsf{GU}(q-2,2)$ Shimura varieties, which classify abelian varieties with additional structure. These Shimura varieties admit two stratifications of interest: the Ekedahl-Oort stratification, based on the isomorphism class of the $p$-torsion subgroup scheme, and the Newton stratification, based on the isogeny class of the $p$-divisible group. It is natural to ask which Ekedahl-Oort strata intersect the unique closed Newton stratum, called the supersingular locus. The next generation of cellular networks will be characterized by openness, intelligence, virtualization, and distributed computing. The Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) framework represents a significant leap toward realizing these ideals, with prototype deployments taking place in both academic and industrial domains. While it holds the potential to disrupt the established vendor lock-ins, Open RAN's disaggregated nature raises critical security concerns. Safeguarding data and securing interfaces must be integral to Open RAN's design, demanding meticulous analysis of cost/benefit tradeoffs. In this paper, we embark on the first comprehensive investigation into the impact of encryption on two pivotal Open RAN interfaces: the E2 interface, connecting the base station with a near-real-time RAN Intelligent Controller, and the Open Fronthaul, connecting the Radio Unit to the Distributed Unit. Our study leverages a full-stack O-RAN ALLIANCE compliant implementation within the Colosseum network emulator and a production-ready Open RAN and 5G-compliant private cellular network. This research contributes quantitative insights into the latency introduced and throughput reduction stemming from using various encryption protocols. Furthermore, we present four fundamental principles for constructing security by design within Open RAN systems, offering a roadmap for navigating the intricate landscape of Open RAN security.

Spectrum sharing allows different protocols of the same standard (e.g., 802.11 family) or different standards (e.g., LTE and DVB) to coexist in overlapping frequency bands. As this paradigm continues to spread, wireless systems must also evolve to identify active transmitters and unauthorized waveforms in real time under intentional distortion of preambles, extremely low signal-to-noise ratios and challenging channel conditions. We overcome limitations of correlation-based preamble matching methods in such conditions through the design of T-PRIME: a Transformer-based machine learning approach. T-PRIME learns the structural design of transmitted frames through its attention mechanism, looking at sequence patterns that go beyond the preamble alone. The paper makes three contributions: First, it compares Transformer models and demonstrates their superiority over traditional methods and state-of-the-art neural networks. Second, it rigorously analyzes T-PRIME's real-time feasibility on DeepWave's AIR-T platform. Third, it utilizes an extensive 66 GB dataset of over-the-air (OTA) WiFi transmissions for training, which is released along with the code for community use. Results reveal nearly perfect (i.e. $>98\%$) classification accuracy under simulated scenarios, showing $100\%$ detection improvement over legacy methods in low SNR ranges, $97\%$ classification accuracy for OTA single-protocol transmissions and up to $75\%$ double-protocol classification accuracy in interference scenarios., Comment: This is the extended version of the IEEE INFOCOM 2024 paper with the same title

5G and beyond cellular networks promise remarkable advancements in bandwidth, latency, and connectivity. The emergence of Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) represents a pivotal direction for the evolution of cellular networks, inherently supporting machine learning (ML) for network operation control. Within this framework, RAN Intelligence Controllers (RICs) from one provider can employ ML models developed by third-party vendors through the acquisition of key performance indicators (KPIs) from geographically distant base stations or user equipment (UE). Yet, the development of ML models hinges on the availability of realistic and robust datasets. In this study, we embark on a two-fold journey. First, we collect a comprehensive 5G dataset, harnessing real-world cell phones across diverse applications, locations, and mobility scenarios. Next, we replicate this traffic within a full-stack srsRAN-based O-RAN framework on Colosseum, the world's largest radio frequency (RF) emulator. This process yields a robust and O-RAN compliant KPI dataset mirroring real-world conditions. We illustrate how such a dataset can fuel the training of ML models and facilitate the deployment of xApps for traffic slice classification by introducing a CNN based classifier that achieves accuracy $>95\%$ offline and $92\%$ online. The development of spin-orbitronic devices, such as magneto-electric spin-orbit logic devices, calls for materials with a high resistivity and a high spin-charge interconversion efficiency. One of the most promising candidates in this regard is sputtered Bi$_x$Se$_{1-x}$. Although there are several techniques to quantify spin-charge interconversion, to date reported values for sputtered Bi$_x$Se$_{1-x}$ have often been overestimated due to spurious effects related to local currents combined with a lack of understanding of the effect of the interfaces and the use of approximations for unknown parameters, such as the spin diffusion length. In the present study, non-local spin valves are used to inject pure spin currents into Bi$_x$Se$_{1-x}$, allowing us to directly obtain its spin diffusion length as well as its spin Hall angle, from 10 K up to 300 K. These values, which are more accurate than those previously reported in sputtered Bi$_x$Se$_{1-x}$, evidence that the efficiency of this material is not exceptional. Indeed, the figure of merit for spin-charge interconversion, given by the product of these two parameters, is slightly under 1 nm. Biological and artificial information processing systems form representations of the world that they can use to categorize, reason, plan, navigate, and make decisions. How can we measure the similarity between the representations formed by these diverse systems? Do similarities in representations then translate into similar behavior? If so, then how can a system's representations be modified to better match those of another system? These questions pertaining to the study of representational alignment are at the heart of some of the most promising research areas in contemporary cognitive science, neuroscience, and machine learning. In this Perspective, we survey the exciting recent developments in representational alignment research in the fields of cognitive science, neuroscience, and machine learning. Despite their overlapping interests, there is limited knowledge transfer between these fields, so work in one field ends up duplicated in another, and useful innovations are not shared effectively. To improve communication, we propose a unifying framework that can serve as a common language for research on representational alignment, and map several streams of existing work across fields within our framework. We also lay out open problems in representational alignment where progress can benefit all three of these fields. Agent-based models are widely used to predict infectious disease spread. For these predictions, one needs to understand how each input parameter affects the result. Here, some parameters may affect the sensitivities of others, requiring the analysis of higher order coefficients through e.g. Sobol sensitivity analysis. The geographical structures of real-world regions are distinct in that they are difficult to reduce to single parameter values, making a unified sensitivity analysis intractable. Yet analyzing the importance of geographical structure on the sensitivity of other input parameters is important because a strong effect would justify the use of models with real-world geographical representations, as opposed to stylized ones. Here we perform a grouped Sobol's sensitivity analysis on COVID-19 spread simulations across a set of three diverse real-world geographical representations. We study the differences in both results and the sensitivity of non-geographical parameters across these geographies. By comparing Sobol indices of parameters across geographies, we find evidence that infection rate could have more sensitivity in regions where the population is segregated, while parameters like recovery period of mild cases are more sensitive in regions with mixed populations. We also show how geographical structure affects parameter sensitivity changes over time.

Stochastic Resonance (SR) describes a phenomenon where an additive noise (stochastic carrier-wave) enhances the signal transmission in a nonlinear system. In the nervous system, nonlinear properties are present from the level of single ion channels all the way to perception and appear to support the emergence of SR. For example, SR has been repeatedly demonstrated for visual detection tasks, also by adding noise directly to cortical areas via transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS). When dealing with nonlinear physical systems, it has been suggested that resonance can be induced not only by adding stochastic signals (i.e., noise) but also by adding a large class of signals that are not stochastic in nature which cause "deterministic amplitude resonance" (DAR). Here we mathematically show that high-frequency, deterministic, periodic signals can yield resonance-like effects with linear transfer and infinite signal-to-noise ratio at the output. We tested this prediction empirically and investigated whether non-random, high-frequency, transcranial alternating current stimulation applied to visual cortex could induce resonance-like effects and enhance performance of a visual detection task. We demonstrated in 28 participants that applying 80 Hz triangular-waves or sine-waves with tACS reduced visual contrast detection threshold for optimal brain stimulation intensities. The influence of tACS on contrast sensitivity was equally effective to tRNS-induced modulation, demonstrating that both tACS and tRNS can reduce contrast detection thresholds. We investigate the $a$-numbers of $\mathbb{Z}/p^2\mathbb{Z}$-covers in characteristic $p>2$ and extend a technique originally introduced by Farnell and Pries for $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$-covers. High-risk operational tasks such as those in aviation require training environments that are realistic and capable of inducing high levels of workload. Virtual Reality (VR) offers a simulated 3D environment for immersive, safe and valid training of pilots. An added advantage of such training environments is that they can be personalized to enhance learning, e.g., by adapting the simulation to the user's workload in real-time. The question remains how to reliably and robustly measure a pilot's workload during the training. In this study, six novice military pilots (average of 34.33 flight hours) conducted a speed change maneuver in a VR flight simulator. In half of the runs an auditory 2-back task was added as a secondary task. This led to trials of low and high workload which we compared using the pilot's control input in longitudinal (i.e., pitch) and lateral (i.e., roll) directions. We extracted Pilot Inceptor Workload (PIW) from the stick data and conducted a binary logistic regression to determine whether PIW is predictive of task-induced workload. The results show that inputs on the stick along its longitudinal direction were predictive of workload (low vs. high) when performing a speed change maneuver. Given that PIW may be a task-specific measure, future work may consider (neuro)physiological predictors. Nonetheless, the current paper provides evidence that measuring PIW in a VR flight simulator yields real-time and non-invasive means to determine workload.
