The genus Morchella has gone through turbulent taxonomic treatments. Although significant progress in Morchella systematics has been achieved in the past decade, several problems remain unresolved and taxonomy in the genus is still in flux. In late 2019, a paper published in the open-access journal Scientific Reports raised serious concerns about the taxonomic stability of the genus, but also about the future of academic publishing. The paper, entitled “High diversity of Morchella and a novel lineage of the esculenta clade from the north Qinling Mountains revealed by GCPSR-based study” by Phanpadith and colleagues, suffered from gross methodological errors, included false results and artifactual phylogenies, had misapplied citations throughout, and proposed a new species name invalidly. Although the paper was eventually retracted by Scientific Reports in 2021, the fact that such an overtly flawed and scientifically unsound paper was published in a high-ranked Q1 journal raises alarming questions about quality controls and safekeeping procedures in scholarly publishing. Using this paper as a case study, we provide a critical review on the pitfalls of Morchella systematics followed by a series of recommendations for the delimitation of species, description of taxa, and ultimately for a sustainable taxonomy in Morchella. Problems and loopholes in the academic publishing system are also identified and discussed, and additional quality controls in the pre- and post-publication stages are proposed.

The Gyromitra gigas species complex includes six morphologically similar taxa, several of which have a long history of segregation, synonymization, and rearrangement among different genera. These taxa occur throughout Asia, Europe, and North America and include G. gigas, G. khanspurensis, G. korfii, G. montana, G. pseudogigas, and G. ticiniana. ITS and LSU sequences from 66 specimens, including type specimens for all six taxa, were included in phylogenetic analyses to establish species boundaries and resolve species relationships. Sequence similarity comparisons were also conducted between the two molecular markers and between the ITS1 and ITS2 regions. Although ITS exhibited sufficient variability to discriminate among species in the G. gigas species complex, LSU displayed very low variability rendering it completely useless as a molecular marker for separating taxa in this group. The ITS1 region was twice as informative as the ITS2 region and can be used as a barcode marker to identify these species. Gyromitra gigas and G. montana occur as a well-supported clade of sister species and can be distinguished based on ascospore morphology. Gyromitra korfii and G. ticiniana also form a highly supported clade and are considered distinct species based on geography. Gyromitra littiniana is confirmed to be synonymous with G. ticiniana based on molecular data. Gyromitra khanspurensis and G. pseudogigas, which also form a highly supported clade, are considered separate species early in the process of speciation that differ significantly in ascomata and ascospore morphology. A key to species based on morphology and geography is provided.

Between 1960 and 2009, regular visits to Svalbard were made and a number of Hebeloma spp. were collected by several mycologists. We have studied 249 such collections, many from the Herbarium in Oslo (O) and from the private herbarium of the first author. The collections represent 17 different species. Of the 17 species, five (H. louiseae, H. pallidolabiatum, H. perexiguum, H. pubescens and H. spetsbergense) are only known from Svalbard. In this paper we discuss the habitat and apparent associates of the 17 species recorded, as well as their frequency of occurrence within our sample, and compare this with our data from other regions of the northern hemisphere. A further analysis compares the records we have from the collection of basidiomes with data published from root analysis of mycorrhizal associates on Svalbard. Root associate data strongly suggest the occurrence of an unknown Hebeloma species, not close to any of the infrageneric groups known to occur in arctic habitats.

Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN. Aim The main aims of this study are: (1) to test if temperature and related parameters are the primary determinants of the regional distribution of macrofungi (as is commonly recognized for plants); (2) to test if the success of modelling fungal distribution patterns depends on species and distribution characteristics; and (3) to explore the potential of using herbarium data for modelling and predicting fungal species’ distributions. Location The study area, Norway, spans 58–71° N latitude and 4–32° E longitude, and embraces extensive ecological gradients in a small area. Methods The study is based on 1020 herbarium collections of nine selected species of macrofungi and a set of 75 environmental predictor variables, all recorded in a 5 × 5-km grid covering Norway. Primarily, generalized linear model (GLM; logistic regression) analyses were used to identify the environmental variables that best accounted for the species’ recorded distributions in Norway. Second, Maxent analyses (using variables identified by GLM) were used to produce predictive potential distribution maps for these species. Results Variables relating to temperature and radiation were most frequently included in the GLMs, and between 24.8% and 59.8% of the variation in single-species occurrence was accounted for. The fraction of variation explained by the GLMs ranged from 41.6% to 59.8% for species with restricted distributions, and from 24.8% to 39.3% for species with widespread/scattered and intermediate distributions. The two-step procedure of GLM followed by Maxent gave predictions with very high values for the area under the curve (0.927–0.997), and maps of potential distribution were generally credible. Main conclusions We show that temperature is a key factor governing the distribution of macrofungi in Norway, indicating that fungi may respond strongly to global warming. We confirm that modelling success depends partly on species and distribution characteristics, notably on how the distribution relates to the extent of the study area. Our study demonstrates that the combination of GLM and Maxent may be a fruitful approach for biogeography. We conclude that herbarium data improve insight into factors that control the distributions of fungi, of particular value for research on fleshy fungi (mushrooms), which have largely cryptic life cycles.

ISAM VII at Finse, Norway, 2005

Mycena aphanes and Mycena exilis, belonging to section Filipedes and section Polyadelphia, are proposed as new species. They are described and illustrated and compared to other species in the two sections. Mycena aphanes is a strikingly characteristic Mycena with fulvous or yellowish brown colours of both pileus and stipe. Mycena exilis is characterized by its occurrence on fallen Salix leaves, a pale brown pileus, occasionally with a pale pink tinge, narrowly adnate lamellae, four-spored basidia, and the presence of clamp connections.

The basidiomycete genus Galerina Earle accommodates more than 300 small brown-spored agarics worldwide, predominantly described from the Northern hemisphere. The delimitation of species and infrageneric units hitherto has been based on morphological and, to some extent, ecological characters. In this study we have analyzed nuclear ribosomal LSU and ITS sequences to reveal infrageneric phylogeny and the phylogenetic placement of Galerina among the dark-spored agarics. Sequences from 36 northern hemisphere Galerina species and 19 other dark-spored taxa were analyzed, some of them obtained from EMBL/GenBank. Our results, received from Bayesian and distance methods, strongly suggest that Galerina is a polyphyletic genus. The LSU analysis shows that Galerina is composed of three or four separate monophyletic main groups. In addition, a few species cluster together with other dark-spored agarics. The same groups are recognized in the ITS tree and they correspond roughly to previously recognized subgenera or sections in Galerina. With high support our LSU analysis suggests that Gymnopilus is a monophyletic genus and that Gymnopilus and one of the Galerina lineages ("mycenopsis") are sister groups. The analyses further indicate that the Galerina lineages, as well as the genus Gymnopilus, could be referred to a strongly emendated family Strophariaceae, which corresponds largely to the family as circumscribed by Kühner (1980). Our results affirm that morphological characters often are highly homoplastic in the agarics. At the present stage formal taxonomic consequences or nomenclatural changes are not proposed.

The distinctiveness of the European Galerina marginata and the American G. autumnalis is tested with analyses of DNA sequences from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) of the nuclear ribosomal repeat and RFLP analysis of the entire ITS region. European and North American material from six taxa described in Galerina subgenus Naucoriopsis are included along with out-group material of six taxa representing two other subgenera of Galerina. The results do not indicate any genetic difference between species by Smith & Singer (1964) referred to the two ‘stirpes’ Marginata and Autumnalis of Naucoriopsis, i.e. G. autumnalis, G. marginata, G. oregonensis, G. pseudomycenopsis, G. unicolor, and G. venenata and all except G. pseudomycenopsis are considered later synonyms of G. marginata. Galerina badipes (syn. G. cedretorum var. bispora of ‘stirps’ Cedretorum is well supported as a distinct species. Subgenus Naucoriopsis appears as a distinct infrageneric unit well separated from the infrageneric units represented by the out-group species.

The diversity of the genera Galerina and Phaeogalera on the Faroe Islands is recorded. Eighteen species are recognised, twelve of which are here reported for the first time on the archipelago. A key to the species is provided. A certain affinity is shown to the arctic-alpine Galerina flora, especially by species occurring at higher altitudes on the Faroes. All the Faroese species grow on the North American continent as well, and many probably have a circumglobal distribution in the Northern Hemisphere. Some occur also on the Southern Hemisphere, some as far south as in Subantarctic-Antarctic regions. Naucoria macrospora J. E. Lange var. borealis F. H. Moller is synonymized with G. pseudotundrae Kuhner.

The accumulation and long term behaviour of radiocaesium in mushrooms were studied at selected sites in Norway. A large variation in transfer factors from soil to mushroom were found with the lowest value of 0.002 m 2 /kg for Leccinum versipelle up to 0.5 m 2 /kg for species of Amanita fulva and Amanita vaginata. Rozites caperata and Cortinarius armillatus were also found to accumulate radiocaesium very efficiently. For the study of long term behaviour of radiocaesium in mushrooms the same species were collected from the same location from 1989 to 1995. Two of four data sets showed a significant decrease in activity levels in the study period with an estimated effective ecological half-life in the range of 1.5–8 years, while a non-significant decrease and no decrease were indicated by the other two.

Six taxa, representing five species of Entoloma (Fr.) Kumm. subgen. Pouzaromyces (Pilat) Moser emend. Noordel. are described from Norway, of which four are new to the country, viz., E. dysthales (Peck) Sacc, E. dysthaloides Noordel., E. araneosum (Quel.) Moser i.fulvostrigosum (Berk. & Br.) Noordel., and E. versatilis (Fr.) Moser.

Twenty-three species of Entoloma are described from the surroundings of Finse on the mountain plateau Hardangervidda, in southern Norway. Many of them belong to the group of arctic and alpine taxa having a circumpolar distribution. A key to the species in alpine and (sub)arctic habitats is given. Twelve species are recorded for the first time from Norway.

Twelve species of Galerinaare recorded from Svalbard. Eight of them are new to the archipelago. The examined collections (322 nos.) are almost exclusively from the west coast of Spitsbergen between the Bellsund district and Norskeoya, and from the fjord districts. Eleven collections are from Kong Karls Land.

Research on 292 Bangladesh infants aged 9-10 months showed that 34% suffer from diarrheal disease and 68% suffer from malnutrition. Investigations of 3 sites (Site 1=84 infants from a rural community: Site 2=96 infants from a low-lying village: Site 3= the rest from a village during the dry season) revealed certain features of the infants backgrounds: 79% played in areas contaminated with fecal matter 83% of the caretakers ignored germ theory and 96% did not practice sanitary methods after defecation. Mothers believed that diarrhea was due to supernatural causes bad air or adult foods. Step-wise regression analysis was used to determine the variables that most caused diarrhea at the various sites. Site 1 contributors were infants age and ability to walk fecal matter in the play area mothers education and no household radio. Site 2 contributors included wetness of play area fecal matter in play area and not washing food dropped by infant. Site 3 contributors included no household radio maternal use of latrines and infants age. Behavior certainly needs to be mediated in order to sway inhabitants from local traditions that facilitate poor health especially when infants are very young.
