A prototype of compact x-ray compound refractive lens (CRL) manipulator system has been developed at the Argonne National Laboratory for dark-field imaging of multi-scale structures. This novel full-field imaging modality uses Bragg peaks to reconstruct 3D distribution of mesoscopic and microscopic structures that govern the behavior of functional materials, in particular, thermodynamic phase transitions in magnetic systems. At the heart of this microscopy technique is a CRL-based x-ray objective lens* with an easily adjustable focal length to isolate any region of interest, typically in the energy range of 5-100 keV or higher, with high precision positional and angular reproducibility. Since the x-ray CRL manipulator system for this technique will be implemented on a high-resolution diffractometer detector arm that rotates during diffraction studies, compactness and system stability, along with the ability to change focal length (zooming), became key design requirements for this new CRL manipulator system. This work describes mechanical design of a prototype compact wavefront sensor for in situ measurement and monitoring of beam wavefront of hard x-ray beamlines [1]. The system is based on a single-shot grating interferometer [2, 3] and a thin diamond single-crystal beam splitter. The beam splitter is designed to be inserted in the incident and oriented to diffract a fraction of the incident beam bandwidth into the interferometer, for wavefront measurement and reconstruction. The concept is intended to study the feasibility of a non-invasive wavefront sensor for real time wavefront monitoring and diagnostics, with possible application in adaptive mirrors for wavefront preservation and control [1, 4]. The next generation light sources such as diffraction limited storage rings and high repetition rate free electron lasers (FELs) will generate X-ray beams with significantly increased peak and average brilliance. These future facilities will require X-ray optical components capable of handling large instantaneous and average power densities while tailoring the properties of the X-ray beams for a variety of scientific experiments. In this paper we report on research and development of a single crystal diamond compound refractive lens. Diamond lenses presented here are fabricated by fs-laser cutting and subsequent polishing. Grating interferometry measurement data of these lenses had been performed at the Advanced Photon Source (Argonne). Synchrotron radiation sources have greatly contributed to the progress in many fields of science. The development of the storage ring technologies has made possible to obtain very low emittance electron beams, which together with the use of undulators allow guiding a very high photon flux into a very small spot required by the experiments. Development of the sources has been accompanied with equally strong progress in beamline optics, improving further experimental conditions and opening new possibilities in science. This follows from the fact that beamlines have to transport the photon beam from the source to the experiment while conserving the beam quality and the photon flux of the source as good as possible. This work uses basic concepts of X-ray optics to develop beamlines and beamline instrumentation. First, a beamline design that uses astigmatism is discussed. This project takes advantage of the low vertical emittance of the MAX II and MAX IV storage rings to improve the flexibility of soft X-ray beamlines. Secondly a polarimeter is introduced, a device that characterizes the polarization of the light at the experimental station. In this part a new method is presented for analyzing the polarimeter data. Finally, applying wave optics to X-ray optics is presented and discussed. It is shown how new tools were added into wave propagation modeling, taking into account surface errors of the optical components used in grazing incidence. For these studies the source properties, X-ray interaction with matter together with many concepts in optics are needed and are also presented here.
