We present the first fluorine measurements in 12 normal giants belonging to the Galactic thin and thick disks using spectra obtained with the Phoenix infrared spectrometer on the 2.1m telescope at Kitt Peak. Abundances are determined from the (1-0) R9 2.3358 micron feature of the molecule HF. Additionally, sodium abundances are derived in 25 giants in the thin disk, thick disk, and halo using the Na I line at 2.3379 microns. We report fluorine abundances for thin and thick disk stars in the metallicity range -0.7 < [Fe/H] < 0. We add two abundance measurements for stars with [Fe/H] < 0.5 dex which are at a critical metallicity range to constrain models. We find a larger dispersion in fluorine abundances than sodium abundances despite both species having similar overall uncertainties due to atmospheric parameters, suggesting this dispersion is real and not observational. The dispersion is slightly larger in the thick disk than the thin. The thin and thick disk average [F/Fe] for our sample of stars combined with the literature differ by 0.03 dex. The observations are compared to available chemical evolution models.

The origin of apparently young $\alpha$-rich stars in the Galaxy is still a matter of debate in Galactic archaeology, whether they are genuinely young or might be products of binary evolution and merger/mass accretion. We aim to shed light on the nature of young $\alpha$-rich stars in the Milky Way by studying their distribution in the Galaxy thanks to an unprecedented sample of giant stars that cover different Galactic regions and have precise asteroseismic ages, chemical, and kinematic measurements. We analyze a new sample of $\sim$ 6000 stars with precise ages coming from asteroseismology. Our sample combines the global asteroseismic parameters measured from light curves obtained by the K2 mission with stellar parameters and chemical abundances obtained from APOGEE DR17 and GALAH DR3, then cross-matched with Gaia DR3. We define our sample of young $\alpha$-rich stars and study their chemical, kinematic, and age properties. We investigate young $\alpha$-rich stars in different parts of the Galaxy and we find that the fraction of young $\alpha$-rich stars remains constant with respect to the number of high-$\alpha$ stars at $\sim$ 10%. Furthermore, young $\alpha$-rich stars have kinematic and chemical properties similar to high-$\alpha$ stars, except for [C/N] ratios. This suggests that these stars are not genuinely young, but products of binary evolution and merger/mass accretion. Under that assumption, we find the fraction of these stars in the field to be similar to that found recently in clusters. This fact suggests that $\sim$ 10% of the low-$\alpha$ field stars could also have their ages underestimated by asteroseismology. Asteroseismology of solar-like oscillations in giant stars allow the derivation of their masses and radii. For members of open clusters this allows an age estimate of the cluster which should be identical to the age estimate from the colour-magnitude diagram, but independent of the uncertainties that are present for that type of analysis. Thus, a more precise and accurate age estimate can be obtained. We aim to measure asteroseismic properties of oscillating giant members of the open cluster NGC 6866 and utilise these for a cluster age estimate. Model comparisons allow constraints on the stellar physics, and here we investigate the efficiency of convective-core overshoot and effects of rotation during the main-sequence, which has a significant influence on the age for these relatively massive giants. We identify six giant members of NGC 6866 and derive asteroseismic measurements for five of them. This constrains the convective-core overshoot and enables a more precise and accurate age estimate than previously possible. Asteroseismology establishes the helium-core burning evolutionary phase for the giants, which have a mean mass of 2.8 $M_{\odot}$. Their radii are significantly smaller than predicted by current 1D stellar models unless the amount of convective-core overshoot on the main sequence is reduced to $\alpha_{ov} \leq 0.1 H_p$ in the step-overshoot description. Our measurements also suggest that rotation has affected the evolution of the stars in NGC 6866 in a way that is consistent with 3D simulations but not with current 1D stellar models. The cluster age is estimated to be 0.43 $\pm$ 0.05 Gyr, significantly younger and more precise than most previous estimates. We derive a precise cluster age while constraining convective-core overshooting and effects of rotation in the models. Abundances of s-capture process elements in stars with exquisite asteroseismic, spectroscopic, and astrometric constraints offer a novel opportunity to study stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, and Galactic chemical evolution. We aim to investigate one of the least studied s-process elements in the literature, Ce, using stars with asteroseismic constraints from the Kepler, K2 and TESS missions. We combine the global asteroseismic parameters derived from precise light curves obtained by the Kepler, K2 and TESS missions with chemical abundances from the APOGEE DR17 survey and astrometric data from the Gaia mission. Finally, we compute stellar ages using the code PARAM. We investigate the different trends of [Ce/Fe] as a function of [Fe/H], [alpha/Fe] and age considering the dependence on the radial position, specially in the case of K2 targets which cover a large Galactocentric range. We, finally, explore the [Ce/alpha] ratios as a function of age in different Galactocentric intervals. The studied trends display a strong dependence of the Ce abundances on [Fe/H] and star formation history. Indeed, the [Ce/Fe] ratio shows a non-monotonic dependence on [Fe/H] with a peak around -0.2 dex. Moreover, younger stars have higher [Ce/Fe] and [Ce/alpha] ratios than older stars, confirming the latest contribution of low- and intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch stars to the Galactic chemical enrichment. In addition, the trends of [Ce/Fe] and [Ce/alpha] with age become steeper moving towards the outer regions of the Galactic disc, demonstrating a more intense star formation in the inner regions than in the outer regions. Ce is thus a potentially interesting element to help constraining stellar yields and the inside-out formation of the Milky Way disc. The recent Gaia Third Data Release contains a homogeneous analysis of millions of high-quality Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) stellar spectra by the GSP-Spec module. This led to the estimation of millions of individual chemical abundances and allows us to chemically map the Milky Way. Among the published GSP-Spec abundances, three heavy-elements produced by neutron-captures in stellar interiors can be found: Ce, Zr and Nd. We use a sample of about 30,000 LTE Ce abundances, selected after applying different combinations of GSP-Spec flags. Thanks to the Gaia DR3 astrometric data and radial velocities, we explore the cerium content in the Milky Way and, in particular, in its halo and disc components. The high quality of the Ce GSP-Spec abundances is quantified thanks to literature comparisons. We found a rather flat [Ce/Fe] versus [M/H] trend. We also found a flat radial gradient in the disc derived from field stars and, independently, from about 50 open clusters, in agreement with previous studies. The [Ce/Fe] vertical gradient has also been estimated. We also report an increasing [Ce/Ca] vs [Ca/H] in the disc, illustrating the late contribution of AGB with respect to SN II. Our cerium abundances in the disc, including the young massive population, are well reproduced by a new three-infall chemical evolution model. Among the halo population, the M 4 globular cluster is found to be enriched in cerium. Moreover, eleven stars with cerium abundances belonging to the Thamnos, Helmi Stream and Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus accreted systems were identified from chemo-dynamical diagnostics. We found that the Helmi Stream could be slightly underabundant in cerium, compared to the two other systems. In recent observations of extremely metal-poor low-mass starburst galaxies, almost solar Fe/O ratios are reported, despite N/O ratios consistent with the low metallicity. We investigate if the peculiar Fe/O ratios can be a distinctive signature of an early enrichment produced by very massive objects dying as Pair-Instability Supernovae (PISN). We run chemical evolution models with yields that account for the contribution by PISN. We use both the recent non-rotating stellar yields from Goswami et al. 2021, and new yields from rotating very massive stars calculated on purpose in this work. We also search for the best initial mass function (IMF) that is able to reproduce the observations. We can reproduce the observations by adopting a bi-modal IMF and by including an initial burst of rotating very massive stars. Only with a burst of very massive stars can we reproduce the almost solar Fe/O ratios at the estimated young ages. We also confirm that rotation is absolutely needed to concomitantly reproduce the observed N/O ratios. These results stress the importance of very massive stars in galactic chemical evolution studies and strongly support a top-heavy initial mass function in the very early evolutionary stages of metal poor starburst galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We exploit the unique characteristics of a sample of open clusters (OCs) and field stars for which high-precision 7Li abundances and stellar parameters are homogeneously derived by the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES). We derive possibly undepleted 7Li abundances for 26 OCs and star forming regions with ages from young to old spanning a large range of Galactocentric distances, which allows us to reconstruct the local late Galactic evolution of lithium as well as its current abundance gradient along the disc. Field stars are added to look further back in time and to constrain 7Li evolution in other Galactic components. The data are then compared to theoretical tracks from chemical evolution models that implement different 7Li forges. We find that the upper envelope of the 7Li abundances measured in field stars of nearly solar metallicities traces very well the level of lithium enrichment attained by the ISM as inferred from observations of cluster stars. We confirm previous findings that the abundance of 7Li in the solar neighbourhood does not decrease at supersolar metallicity. The comparison of the data with the chemical evolution model predictions favours a scenario in which the majority of the 7Li abundance in meteorites comes from novae. Current data also seem to suggest that the nova rate flattens out at later times. This requirement might have implications for the masses of the white dwarf nova progenitors and deserves further investigation. Neutrino-induced reactions taking place in core-collapse supernovae also produce some fresh lithium. There is mounting evidence that the stellar initial mass function (IMF) could extend much beyond the canonical Mi ~100, Msun limit, but the impact of such hypothesis on the chemical enrichment of galaxies still remains to be clarified. We aim to address this question by analysing the observed abundances of thin- and thick-disc stars in the Milky Way with chemical evolution models that account for the contribution of very massive stars dying as pair-instability supernovae. We built new sets of chemical yields from massive and very massive stars up to Mi ~ 350 Msun, by combining the wind ejecta extracted from our hydrostatic stellar evolution models with explosion ejecta from the literature. Using a simple chemical evolution code we analyse the effects of adopting different yield tables by comparing predictions against observations of stars in the solar vicinity. After several tests, we focus on the [O/Fe] ratio which best separates the chemical patterns of the two Milky Way components. We find that with a standard IMF, truncated at Mi ~ 100 Msun, we can reproduce various observational constraints for thin-disc stars, but the same IMF fails to account for the [O/Fe] ratios of thick-disc stars. The best results are obtained by extending the IMF up to Mi = 350 Msun and including the chemical ejecta of very massive stars, in the form of winds and pair-instability supernova explosions.Our study indicates that PISN played a significant role in shaping the chemical evolution of the Milky Way thick disc. By including their chemical yields it is easier to reproduce not only the level of the alpha-enhancement but also the observed slope of thick-disc stars in the [O/Fe] vs [Fe/H] diagram. The analysis of the APOGEE DR16 data suggests the existence of a clear distinction between two sequences of disc stars at different Galactocentric distances in the [$\alpha$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] abundance ratio space: the so-called high-$\alpha$ sequence, classically associated to an old population of stars in the thick disc, and the low-$\alpha$ sequence, which mostly comprises relatively young stars in the thin disc. We perform a Bayesian analysis based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to constrain a multi-zone two-infall chemical evolution model designed for regions at different Galactocentric distances using measured chemical abundances from the APOGEE DR16 sample. An inside-out formation of the Galaxy disc naturally emerges from the best fit of our two-infall chemical-evolution model to APOGEE-DR16: inner Galactic regions are assembled on shorter time-scales compared to the external ones. In the outer disc (with radii $R>6$ kpc), the chemical dilution due to a late accretion event of gas with primordial chemical composition is the main driver of the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] abundance pattern in the low-$\alpha$ sequence. In the inner disc, in the framework of the two-infall model, we confirm the presence of an enriched gas infall in the low-$\alpha$ phase as suggested by chemo-dynamical models. Our Bayesian analysis of the recent APOGEE DR16 data suggests a significant delay time, ranging from $\sim$3.0 to 4.7 Gyr, between the first and second gas infall events for all the analyzed Galactocentric regions. Our results propose a clear interpretation of the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relations along the Galactic discs. We present results for the evolution of the abundances of heavy elements (O, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Ni and Fe) in the inner Galactic regions ($R_{GC} < 4$kpc). We adopt a detailed chemical evolution model already tested for the Galactic bulge and compare the results with APOGEE data. We start with a set of yields from the literature which are considered the best to reproduce the abundance patterns in the solar vicinity. We find that in general the predicted trends nicely reproduce the data but in some cases either the trend or the absolute values of the predicted abundances need to be corrected, even by large factors, in order to reach the best agreement. We suggest how the current stellar yields should be modified to reproduce the data and we discuss whether such corrections are reasonable in the light of the current knowledge of stellar nucleosynthesis. However, we also critically discuss the observations. Our results suggest that Si, Ca, Cr and Ni are the elements for which the required corrections are the smallest, while for Mg and Al moderate modifications are necessary. On the other hand, O and K need the largest corrections to reproduce the observed patterns, a conclusion already reached for solar vicinity abundance patterns, with the exception of oxygen. We study the chemical evolution of Zr, La, Ce and Eu in the Milky Way discs and bulge by means of chemical evolution models compared with recent spectroscopic data. We consider detailed chemical evolution models for the Galactic thick disc, thin disc and bulge, which have been already tested to reproduce the observed [$\alpha$/Fe] vs [Fe/H] diagrams and metallicity distribution functions for the three different components, and we apply them to follow the evolution of neutron capture elements. In the [Eu/Fe] vs [Fe/H] diagram, we observe and predict three distinct sequences corresponding to the thick disc, thin disc and bulge, similarly to what happens for the $\alpha$-elements. We can nicely reproduce the three sequences by assuming different timescales of formation and star formation efficiencies for the three different components, with the thin disc forming on a longer timescale of formation with respect to the thick disc and bulge. On the other hand, in the [X/Fe] vs [Fe/H] diagrams for Zr, La and Ce, the three populations are mixed and also from the model point of view there is an overlapping between the predictions for the different Galactic components, but the observed behaviour can be also reproduced by assuming different star formation histories in the three components. In conclusions, it is straightforward to see how different star formation histories can lead to different abundance patterns and also looking at the abundance patterns of neutron capture elements can help in constraining the history of formation and evolution of the major Galactic components., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. Precise stellar ages from asteroseismology have become available and can help setting stronger constraints on the evolution of the Galactic disc components. Recently, asteroseismology has confirmed a clear age difference in the solar annulus between two distinct sequences in the [$\alpha$/Fe] versus [Fe/H] abundance ratios relation: the high-$\alpha$ and low-$\alpha$ stellar populations. We aim at reproducing these new data with chemical evolution models including different assumptions for the history and number of accretion events. We tested two different approaches: a revised version of the `two-infall' model where the high-$\alpha$ phase forms by a fast gas accretion episode and the low-$\alpha$ sequence follows later from a slower gas infall rate, and the parallel formation scenario where the two disc sequences form coevally and independently. The revised `two-infall' model including uncertainties in age and metallicity is capable of reproducing: i) the [$\alpha$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] abundance relation at different Galactic epochs, ii) the age$-$metallicity relation and the time evolution [$\alpha$/Fe]; iii) the age distribution of the high-$\alpha$ and low-$\alpha$ stellar populations, iv) the metallicity distribution function. The parallel approach is not capable of properly reproduce the stellar age distribution, in particular at old ages. In conclusion, the best chemical evolution model is the revised `two-infall' one, where a consistent delay of $\sim$4.3 Gyr in the beginning of the second gas accretion episode is a crucial assumption to reproduce stellar abundances and ages., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 20 pages, 20 figures

In this paper, we study the formation and chemical evolution of the Milky Way disc with particular focus on the abundance patterns ([$\alpha$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H]) at different Galactocentric distances, the present-time abundance gradients along the disc and the time evolution of abundance gradients. We consider the chemical evolution models for the Galactic disc developed by Grisoni et al. (2017) for the solar neighborhood, both the two-infall and the one-infall ones, and we extend our analysis to the other Galactocentric distances. In particular, we examine the processes which mainly influence the formation of the abundance gradients: the inside-out scenario, a variable star formation efficiency, and radial gas flows. We compare our model results with recent abundance patterns obtained along the Galactic disc from the APOGEE survey and with abundance gradients observed from Cepheids, open clusters, HII regions and PNe. We conclude that the inside-out scenario is a key ingredient, but cannot be the only one to explain abundance patterns at different Galactocentric distances and abundance gradients. Further ingredients, such as radial gas flows and variable star formation efficiency, are needed to reproduce the observed features in the thin disc. We study the chemical evolution of the thick and thin discs of the Galaxy by comparing detailed chemical evolution models with recent data from the AMBRE Project. The data suggest that the stars in the thick and thin discs form two distinct sequences with the thick disc stars showing higher [{\alpha}/Fe] ratios. We adopt two different approaches to model the evolution of thick and thin discs. In particular, we adopt: i) a two-infall approach where the thick disc forms fast and before the thin disc and by means of a fast gas accretion episode, whereas the thin disc forms by means of a second accretion episode on a longer timescale; ii) a parallel approach, where the two discs form in parallel but at different rates. By comparing our model results with the observed [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] and the metallicity distribution functions in the two Galactic components, we conclude that the parallel approach can account for a group of {\alpha}-enhanced metal rich stars present in the data, whereas the two-infall approach cannot explain these stars unless they are the result of stellar migration. In both approaches, the thick disc has formed on a timescale of accretion of 0.1 Gyr, whereas the thin disc formed on a timescale of 7 Gyr in the solar region. In the two-infall approach a gap in star formation between the thick and thin disc formation of several hundreds of Myr should be present, at variance with the parallel approach where no gap is present., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures.
