Abstract

Numerous domains, in fundamental research as well as in applications, require the study of reactions induced by neutrons with energies from few MeV up to few tens of MeV. Reliable measurements also are necessary to improve the evaluated databases used by nuclear transport codes. This energy range covers a large number of topics like transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. A new facility called Neutrons For Science (NFS) is being built for this purpose on the GANIL site at Caen (France). NFS is composed of a pulsed neutron beam for time-of-flight facility as well as irradiation stations for cross-section measurements. Neutrons will be produced by the interaction of deuteron and proton beams, delivered by the SPIRAL-2 linear accelerator, with thick or thin converters made of beryllium or lithium. Continuous and quasi-mono-energetic spectra will be available at NFS up to 40 MeV. In this fast energy region, the neutron flux is expected to be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than at other existing time-of-flight facilities. In addition, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will allow performing cross-section measurements by the activation technique. After a description of the facility and its characteristics, the experiments to be performed in the short and medium term will be presented.

Abstract

Double differential (angular and energy) neutron distributions were measured using an activation foil technique. Reactions were induced by impinging two low-energy heavy-ion beams accelerated with the GANIL CSS1 cyclotron: (36S (12 MeV/u) and 208Pb (6.25 MeV/u)) onto thick natCu targets. Results have been compared to Monte-Carlo calculations from two codes (PHITS and FLUKA) for the purpose of benchmarking radiation protection and shielding requirements. This comparison suggests a disagreement between calculations and experiment, particularly for high-energy neutrons.

Abstract

International audience; Double differential neutron spectra (energy, angle) originating from a thick nat Cu target bombarded by a 12 MeV/nucleon 36 S 16+ beam were measured by the activation method and the Time-of-flight technique at the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL). A neutron spectrum unfolding algorithm combining the SAND-II iterative method and Monte-Carlo techniques was developed for the analysis of the activation results that cover a wide range of neutron energies. It was implemented into a graphical user interface program, called GanUnfold. The experimental neutron spectra are compared to Monte-Carlo simulations performed using the PHITS and FLUKA codes.

Abstract

The neutrons for science (NFS) facility is a component of SPIRAL-2, the new superconducting linear accelerator built at GANIL in Caen (France). The proton and deuteron beams delivered by the accelerator will allow producing intense neutron fields in the 100 keV-40 MeV energy range. Continuous and quasi-mono-kinetic energy spectra, respectively, will be available at NFS, produced by the interaction of a deuteron beam on a thick Be converter and by the Li-7(p, n) reaction on thin converter. The pulsed neutron beam, with a flux up to two orders of magnitude higher than those of other existing time-of-flight facilities, will open new opportunities of experiments in fundamental research as well as in nuclear data measurements. In addition to the neutron beam, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will be available for cross-sections measurements and for the irradiation of electronic devices or biological cells. NFS, whose first experiment is foreseen in 2018, will be a very powerful tool for physics, fundamental research as well as applications like the transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors.

Abstract

International audience; In accelerator facilities, due to their high penetration through matter, neutrons emittedfrom the interaction of high intensity primary beams with thick targets represent a risk ofradiation hazards that needs to be well characterized. The objective of the ongoing TTNY(Thick Target Neutron Yields) experimental program at GANIL is to measure neutron yieldsgenerated by the interaction of heavy ions (12C to 208Pb, from 4 MeV/u to 95 MeV/u)with thick targets (natCu, natNb, natC). Double differential (angular and energy) secondaryneutron spectra are obtained using two techniques: the activation of thin foils and neutronToF measurements. Measurement results are compared to Monte-Carlo transport codes(PHITS and FLUKA) in order to benchmark the physics models implemented in the codesto take into account the wide range of nuclear reactions involved. The data collected duringthe experimental program will also allow improving these physics models. In addition, dataobtained with the niobium target (12C (95MeV/u), natNb) are of high interest for the safetystudies associated with the upgrade of the SPIRAL1 facility at GANIL since this beam andtarget combination is the one considered to evaluate the upper limit of neutron radiationhazards associated with the operation of the facility.

17. High-precision half-life measurements of the T=1/2 mirror beta decays F-17 and Cl-33

Abstract

Background: Measurements of the ft values for T=1/2 mirror β+ decays offer a method to test the conserved vector current hypothesis and to determine Vud, the up-down matrix element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. In most mirror decays used for these tests, uncertainties in the ft values are dominated by the uncertainties in the half-lives. Purpose: Two precision half-life measurements were performed for the T=1/2β+ emitters, 17F and 33Cl, in order to eliminate the half-life as the leading source of uncertainty in their ft values. Method: Half-lives of 17F and 33Cl were determined using β counting of implanted radioactive ion beam samples on a moving tape transport system at the Système de Production d'Ions Radioactifs Accélérés en Ligne low-energy identification station at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds. Results: The 17F half-life result, 64.347 (35) s, precise to ±0.05%, is a factor of 5 times more precise than the previous world average. The half-life of 33Cl was determined to be 2.5038 (22) s. The current precision of ±0.09% is nearly 2 times more precise compared to the previous world average. Abstract

2-DE separations of protein extracts sometimes have problems with poor resolution and streaking. This problem is particularly apparent with microorganisms, most notably those with a large cell wall. Here we describe a novel, rapid protocol for the extraction of microorganisms in acidic conditions, leading to increased resolution and 2-D gel quality. The efficiency of the protocol is demonstrated with extracts of bacteria, Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis; fungus, Trichoderma harzianum and yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We also demonstrate using a membrane centrifugal filtration, that large acidic molecules in excess of 100 kDa, probably including cell wall material, are responsible for the separation difficulties. A range of acidic extraction conditions were investigated, and it was found that optimal extraction is achieved using an extraction solution acidified to pH 3 by 80 mM citric acid. These findings have significant implications for the proteomic study of many medically, agriculturally and environmentally significant microorganisms, as the cell walls of these organisms are often considerably more complex than many commonly studied laboratory strains. © 2006 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. This paper develops, using graphical analysis, a series of models relating immediate investment opportunities to various investment opportunity costs and the costs of financing. The block nature of much long-term finance is recognized in the analysis and the situations in which different concepts are relevant to the establishment of criterion rates, when capital rationing does not exist, are identified. Abstract

The reactivity of the transient silene 1,1-diphenyl-2-neopentylsilene (4) has been studied in various solvents by laser flash photolysis methods, using trans-1,1,3,3-tetraphenyl-2,4-dineopentyl-1,3-disilacyclobutane as the precursor. Silene 4 exhibits a lifetime of ca. 250 μs and a UV absorption maximum of λmax = 335 nm (ε = 10000 ± 2900 M-1 cm-1) in dry, deoxygenated hexane, where it undergoes head-to-tail dimerization and reacts with oxygen with absolute rate constants of kdim = (5 ± 2) × 108 M-1 s-1 and kO2 = (6.5 ± 0.8) × 105 M-1 s-1, respectively. Identical absorption maxima are exhibited by 4 in 1,2-dichloroethane, tetrahydrofuran, and acetonitrile solution, indicating that the silene does not form detectable Lewis acid−base complexes with these solvents, thus making it possible to study the effects of solvent polarity on silene reactivity for the first time. Accordingly, absolute rate constants for reaction of 4 with acetone, methanol, acetic acid, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol, and n-butylamine have been determined as a function of temperature in two or more of the four solvents. The results are compared to previously reported data for 1,1-diphenylsilene (2a) and show that the 2-neopentyl substituent in 4 enhances the reactivity of the Si&dbd;C bond with oxygen, but reduces its reactivity with nucleophilic reagents and toward [2+2]-dimerization by as much as a factor of 103. As with 2a, the Arrhenius parameters for the reactions of 4 are consistent with stepwise mechanisms, initiated by reversible complexation between the nucleophile and the silene, followed by H-transfer. The absolute rate constants at 25 °C vary by only a factor of 3−10 with solvent in each case, but there is a general trend toward increasingly positive Arrhenius activation energies and pre-exponential factors with increasing solvent polarity. The mechanistic ramifications of these results are discussed.

The United Kingdom's Accounting Standards Committee (ASC) has obtained clarification of 'true and fair' view as it is used in the Companies Act of 1981. The interpretation explained the term as an abstract concept, yet stated that, in practice, it is considered to have been met if the accountant has followed GAAP. But, it is assumed that a greater responsibility was intended by using 'true and fair' than simply stating GAAP. The purpose of the balance sheet is still disputed; some claim it portrays historical value and others believe current value of a company's assets. The Counsel's opinion leaves the profession with the responsibility of defining the term. Even though this is a difficult task, the term should be adequately defined.

The apparently arbitrary allocation of many costs in conventional accounting 'matching' practice is a long-standing, unresolved and potentially important problem. Thomas (1974) argued that all matching-based allocations are 'incorrigible'. This paper discusses the issues and proposes modifications to, and interpretations of, current practice that attempt to alleviate the problem. The analysis proposes an incremental development, rather than the introduction of very radical proposals. Abstract

This paper, (a) discusses possible motivations of top management in publicly quoted companies for increasing or decreasing expenditure on research, development, advertising and training; (b) presents hypotheses that such managers will adjust their level of spending on the items of 'revenue investments' listed in (a) to attempt to report earnings which will be in line with capital market expectations; and (c) considers and analyses empirical evidence from a survey of finance directors which is mainly consistent with the hypotheses. The survey also elicited the opinions of finance directors as to the basis of valuation used by the capital market. It was found that different beliefs concerning the market's use of short-term earnings were significantly associated with differing responses regarding expenditure on the investigated categories of revenue investment. Abstract

The half-life of the superallowed Fermi β+ emitter 18Ne has been determined via two high-precision β counting experiments at TRIUMF's Isotope Separator and Accelerator facility. Using two different 4π continuous-flow gas-proportional counters, two independent measurements were made, yielding a weighted average of T1/2=1.66400+0.00057-0.00048 s, which is consistent with but approximately 2 times more precise than a previous high-precision measurement based on γ-ray counting. The present work achieves ±0.034% precision for the 18Ne half-life and will enable the inclusion of 18Ne among the set of precisely measured superallowed Fermi β-decay ft values once improved measurements are made for its Q value and superallowed branching ratio. As a test of systematic uncertainties, the half-life of 23Ne was measured and the world average has been improved, by a factor of 1.7, to 37.148±0.032 s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
