High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) in the range 150 < Q^2 < 35000 GeV^2 has been measured by the H1 collaboration using the Durham jet algorithm in the laboratory frame. QCD calculations in next-to-leading order (NLO) are found to give a good description of the data when requiring a small minimum jet separation, which selects a dijet sample containing 1/3 of DIS events in contrast to approximately 1/10 with more typical jet analyses., Comment: On behalf of the H1 collab., X International Workshop on Deep-Inelastic Scattering, DIS 2002, Cracow, 30 April - 4 May 2002, 4 pages, to be published in Acta Phys. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Large pT processes at HERA, initiated by almost real and by virtual photons, provide information on the structure of the photon. We report on the latest measurements of dijets and large pT particle production with the H1 detector. This includes a leading order determination of an effective virtual photon parton density, of the gluon density of the photon, and comparisons with models., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Proc. The European physical journal / C 77(4), 215(2017). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-017-4717-9, A precision measurement of jet cross sections in neutral current deep-inelastic scattering for photon virtualities $5.5 < Q^{2} < $80GeV$^2$ and inelasticities 0.2 < y < 0.6 is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 290pb$^{−1}$. Double-differential inclusive jet, dijet and trijet cross sections are measured simultaneously and are presented as a function of jet transverse momentum observables and as a function of Q$^2$. Jet cross sections normalised to the inclusive neutral current DIS cross section in the respective Q$^2$-interval are also determined. Previous results of inclusive jet cross sections in the range 150 < Q$^2$ < 15,000GeV$^2$ are extended to low transverse jet momenta 5 < $P^{jet}_{T}$ < 7GeV. The data are compared to predictions from perturbative QCD in next-to-leading order in the strong coupling, in approximate next-to-next-to-leading order and in full next-to-next-to-leading order. Using also the recently published H1 jet data at high values of Q$^2$, the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$(MZ) is determined in next-to-leading order., Published by Springer, Berlin

A first measurement is presented of exclusive photoproduction of $\rho^0$ mesons associated with leading neutrons at HERA. The data were taken with the H1 detector in the years $2006$ and $2007$ at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $1.16$ pb$^{-1}$. The $\rho^0$ mesons with transverse momenta $p_T0.35$, are detected in the Forward Neutron Calorimeter. The phase space of the measurement is defined by the photon virtuality $Q^2 < 2$ GeV$^2$, the total energy of the photon-proton system $20 < W_{\gamma p} < 100$ GeV and the polar angle of the leading neutron $\theta_n < 0.75$ mrad. The cross section of the reaction $\gamma p \to \rho^0 n \pi^+$ is measured as a function of several variables. The data are interpreted in terms of a double peripheral process, involving pion exchange at the proton vertex followed by elastic photoproduction of a $\rho^0$ meson on the virtual pion. In the framework of one-pion-exchange dominance the elastic cross section of photon-pion scattering, $\sigma^{\rm el}(\gamma\pi^+ \to \rho^0\pi^+)$, is extracted. The value of this cross section indicates significant absorptive corrections for the exclusive reaction $\gamma p\to\rho^0 n \pi^+$., Comment: 38 pages, 13 figures, 10 tables, this version accepted by EPJC

Signals of QCD instanton-induced processes are searched for in neutral current deep-inelastic scattering at the electron-proton collider HERA in the kinematic region defined by the Bjorken-scaling variable $x > 10^{-3}$, the inelasticity $0.2< y < 0.7$ and the photon virtuality $150 < Q^2 < 15000$ GeV$^2$. The search is performed using H1 data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ~$351$ pb$^{-1}$. No evidence for the production of QCD instanton-induced events is observed. Upper limits on the cross section for instanton-induced processes between $1.5$~pb and $6$~pb, at $95\%$~ confidence level, are obtained depending on the kinematic domain in which instantons could be produced. Compared to earlier publications, the limits are improved by an order of magnitude and for the first time are challenging theory predictions., 23 pages, 9 figures, this version accepted by EPJC

Berlin : Springer (2016)., A precision measurement of jet cross sections in neutral current deep-inelastic scattering for photon virtualities $\it 5.5 < Q^{72} < 80GeV^{2}$ and inelasticities $\it 0.2 < y < 0.6$ is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $290 pb^{−1}$. Double-differential inclusive jet, dijet and trijet cross sections are measured simultaneously and are presented as a function of jet transverse momentum observables and as a function of $\it Q^{2}$. Jet cross sections normalised to the inclusive neutral current DIS cross section in the respective $\it Q^{2}$-interval are also determined. Previous results of inclusive jet cross sections in the range $\it 150 < Q^{2} < 15 000GeV^{2}$ are extended to low transverse jet momenta $\it 5 < P^{jet}_{T} < 7GeV$. The data are compared to predictions from perturbative QCD in next-to-leading order in the strong coupling, in approximate next-to-next-to-leading orderand in full next-to-next-to-leading order. Using also the recently published H1 jet data at high values of $Q^{2}$, the strong coupling constant $\it \alpha_{s}(MZ)$ is determined in next-to-leading order., Published by Springer, Berlin

High Energy Physics::Phenomenology ,High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
The following topics will be briefly addressed here: the impact of including the combined charm data from H1 and ZEUS on the HERA parton distribution functions (PDFs) from deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), the extraction of the charm quark mass within dierent variants of next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations, and the signicance this has for the Z and $W\pm$ cross section predictions at the LHC. Furthermore, the effectof including jet data from H1 and ZEUS on the HERA PDFs are discussed, including an extraction of $\alpha_{}$s $\it (M_{Z})$. Finally, latest results on the production of inclusive jets in photoproduction (PHP) and on multi-jets in DIS, and the values of $\alpha_{s}$ $\it(M_{Z})$ extracted from them, are presented.

97 pp. (2003)., This document outlines the case for a programme of electron-deuteron scattering mea- surements at HERA using the H1 detector. The goals of the $e^\pm D$ programme are to map the partonic structure of the nucleon at large $Q^2$ and low $x$, to explore the valence quark distributions at the highest $x$ values, to provide a precise measurement of the strong coupling constant and to investigate the parton recombination phenomena revealed in shadowing and their relationship to diffraction. The importance of these measurements for the under- standing of the perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of QCD thought to be responsible for nucleon structure is discussed, as is the significance of the measurements for future experimental programmes. Some modifications to both the H1 apparatus and the HERA accelerator are necessary to realise this programme; these are presented in the document. Mention is also made of questions that will remain unanswered following the completion of the above programme and the potential role of HERA and of H1 in investigating these questions is outlined.Physicists and Institutes interested in supporting this project are asked to inform Max Klein (klein@ifh.de) and Tim Greenshaw (green@hep.ph.liv.ac.uk) that they would like to have their names on the Letter of Intent by Wednesday 30th April 2003.

We present a new measurement of the total photoproduction cross section performed with the H1 detector at HERA. For an average centre of mass energy of 200GeV a value of $\sigma_{tot}~{\gamma{p}}= 165\pm2\pm11\mu$b has been obtained. A detailed analysis of the data in adequate kinematic regions enabled a decomposition of the total cross section in its elastic, single diffractive dissociation and remaining non-diffractive parts, based on safe assumptions on the double diffractive dissociation contribution.

The production of transverse energy in deep inelastic scattering is measured as a function of the kinematic variables x and Q 2 using the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. The results are compared to the different predictions based upon two alternative QCD evolution equations, namely the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) and the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equations. In a pseudorapidity interval which is central in the hadronic centre of mass system between the current and the proton remnant fragmentation region the produced transverse energy increases with decreasing x for constant Q 2 . Such a behaviour can be explained with a QCD calculation based upon the BFKL ansatz. The rate of forward jets, proposed as a signature for BFKL dynamics, has been measured.

15 pp. (1995)., A contact interaction analysis is presented to search for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model in deep inelastic e ± p → e ± hadrons scattering. The data are collected with the H1 detector at HERA and correspond to integrated luminosities of 0.909 pb −1 and 2.947 pb −1 for electron and positron beams, respectively. The differential cross sections dσ/d Q 2 are measured in the Q 2 range between 160 GeV 2 and 20 000 GeV 2 . The absence of any significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is used to constrain the couplings and masses of new leptoquarks and to set limits on electron-quark compositeness scales and on the radius of light quarks.

23 pp. (1995)., Photoproduction of 2-jet events is studied with the H1 detector at HERA. Parton cross sections are extracted from the data by an unfolding method using leading order parton-jet correlations of a QCD generator. The gluon distribution in the photon is derived in the fractional momentum range 0.04 ⩽ x γ ⩽ 1 at the average factorization scale 75 GeV 2 .

16 pp. (1995)., We present an experimental study of theep→eγ+p andep→eγ+X processes using data recorded by the H1 detector in 1993 at the electron-proton collider HERA. These processes are employed to measure the luminosity with an accuracy of 4.5 %. A subsample of theep→eγ+X events in which the hard photon is detected at angles θγ′ ≤ 0.45 mrad with respect to the incident electron direction is used to verify experimentally the size of radiative corrections to theep→eX inclusive cross section and to investigate the structure of the proton in theQ2 domain down to 2 GeV2, lower than previously attained at HERA.

16 pp. (1995)., We present a QCD analysis of the proton structure function F 2 measured by the H1 experiment at HERA, combined with data from previous fixed target experiments. The gluon density is extracted from the scaling violations of F 2 in the range 2 · 10 −4 < x < 3 · 10 −2 and compared with an approximate solution of the QCD evolution equations. The gluon density is found to rise steeply with decreasing x .

16 pp. (1995)., A measurement is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, of the contribution of diffractive interactions to deep-inelastic electron-proton ( ep ) scattering in the kinematic range 8.5 < Q 2 < 50GeV 2 , 2.4 × 10 −4 < Bjorken- x < 0.0133, and 3.7 × 10 −4 < χ p < 0.043. The diffractive contribution to the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is evaluated as a function of the appropriate deep-inelastic scattering variables χ p , Q 2 , β (= χ χ p ) using a class of deep-inelastic ep scattering events with no hadronic energy flow in an interval of pseudo-rapidity adjacent to the proton beam direction. the dependence of this contribution on χ p is measured to be χ p − n with n = 1.19 ± 0.06 (stat.) ± 0.07 (syst.) independent of β and Q 2 , which is consistent with both a diffractive interpretation and a factorisable ep diffractive cross section. A first measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of the pomeron in the form of the Q 2 and β dependences of a factorised structure function is presented. For all measured β, this structure function is observed to be consistent with scale invariance.

32 pp. (1995)., A measurement of the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is reported for momentum transfers squared Q 2 between 4.5 GeV 2 and 1600 GeV 2 and for Bjorken x between 1.8 × 10 −14 and 0.13 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1993. It is observed that F 2 increases significantly with decreasing x , confirming our previous measurement made with one tenth of the data available in this analysis. The Q 2 dependence is approximately logarithmic over the full kinematic range covered. The subsample of deep inelastic events with a large pseudo-rapidity gap in the hadronic energy flow close to the proton remnant is used to measure the “diffractive” contribution to F 2 .

13 pp. (1994)., We present a study of J ψ meson production in collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons, performed with the H1-detector at the HERA collider at DESY. The J ψ mesons are detected via their leptonic decays both to electrons and muons. Requiring exactly two particles in the detector, a cross section of σ(ep → J ψ X) = (8.8±2.0±2.2) nb is determined for 30 GeV ≤ W γp ≤ 180 GeV and Q 2 ≲ 4 GeV 2 . Using the flux of quasi-real photons with Q 2 ≲ 4 GeV 2 , a total production cross section of σ ( γp → J / ψX ) = (56±13±14) nb is derived at an average W γp =90 GeV. The distribution of the squared momentum transfer t from the proton to the J ψ can be fitted using an exponential exp(− b ∥ t ∥) below a ∥ t ∥ of 0.75 GeV 2 yielding a slope parameter of b = (4.7±1.9) GeV −2 .

24 pp. (1991)., We have measured the cross section and $Q^2$-dependence of the reaction γγ→ multihadrons, using the CELLO detector at DESY, for visible final-state masses between 4 and 9 GeV. The data are well fitted by an incoherent sum of Generalised Vector Meson Dominance and Quark Parton Model terms, but at lowQ2 require the addition of a third component which resembles the QPM but is less two-jet-like. With and without this term, the GVDM cross section atQ2=0 is found to be 200±20 and 250±25 nb, respectively.

(1977). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(77)90684-0, The semileptonic and leptonic decay modes of charmed hadrons produced in e + e − collisions above 4 GeV in the cm have been investigated by selecting events with a single electron plus at least two charged tracks. The electron momentum spectrum peaks near 0.5 GeV/ c with few events above 0.7 GeV/ c . The spectrum excludes large rates for the decays D → e v e and D → e v e π , but is compatible with D → e v e K ∗ (892) , D → e v e K or a mixture of both. The semileptonic branching ratio is obtained both by comparing the inclusive electron cross section with the total cross section attributable to charm, and by studying the fraction of events containing a second electron. The semileptonic charm branching ratios obtained are 0.11 ± 0.03 and 0.16 ± 0.06 respectively. A single event with three electrons and hadrons is found, consistent with the estimated background. The 90% confidence upper limit for σ (e + e − → 3e + hadrons) is 0.1 nb.

1-9 (1974)., The reaction e + p → e + π 0 + p was measured near the one pion threshold, detecting the final electron and proton in coincidence for values of q 2 = 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 GeV 2 . The slope of the cross section at threshold is determined. The data are compared with those of the e + p → e + π + + n reaction, measured simultaneously, and with the results of pseudovector Born approximation and with dispersion theoretical calculations.

(1978). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(78)90183-1, The cross sections for e + e − → e + ( μ + + non showering track + any photons have been measured for cm energies between 3.1 GeV and 5.2 GeV. We observe τ -pair production below the thresholdfor charm production and determine the τ mass to be 1.807 ± 0.020 GeV from a fit to the energy dependence of the cross section. The ration of the leptonic branching ratios B μ / B e = 0.92 ± 0.32 is consistent with eμ-universality. The following branching ratios are determined for a V-A coupling: B(τ → ν τ e ν ) = B(τ → ν τ μ ν ) = 0.182 + 0.028 . B ( τ → ν τ + charged hadron + any photons) = 0.29 ± 0.11, B ( τ → ν τ + three or more charged hadrons + any photons) = 0.35 ± 0.11.

5 pp. (1987)., A search for light leptoquarks decaying into a lepton and a quark has been performed using the CELLO detector at the storage ring PETRA. Decay modes have been looked for where the lepton is either a muon or a neutrino, the latter being detected by a high missing transverse momentum. Except for one event previously reported no further two-jet events with two isolated muons were observed. No evidence for pair production of these particles has been found in other final states configurations. Our results are interpreted within a model where leptoquarks appear as a coloured Goldsone multiplet of charges 2/3.A 95% CL upper limit of 0.30 pb is set on the pair production cross section of such leptoquarks, thus excluding masses between 7 and 20.5 GeV.

The three photon final state produced in e + e − collisions at 3.6 GeV and at the mass of the ψ′ resonance has been measured using the nonmagnetic part of the double arm spectrometer DASP. A total of 31 events is observed outside the resonance region compared to 35.1 events predicted from QED. At the mass of the ψ′ 49 events are observed compared to 37.2 events expected from QED. Limits on radiative decays via intermediate states are given.

(1977). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(77)90656-6, The four cross section components σ U , σ L , σ P and σ I were separated in the reaction γ V + p → π + + n at an electron four momentum transfer of Q 2 = 0.70 GeV 2 and an invariant hadronic mass of 2.19 GeV in the range of t between t min and −0.28 GeV 2 . The longitudinal cross section σ L dominates at small |t| and decreases rapidly with increasing |t|. The data are in rough agreement with the prediction of a generalized Born term model. The resulting value for the pion electromagnetic form factor is F π = 0.42 ± 0.015.

(1977). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(77)90360-4, The multiplicity distribution of inclusive electron events above 4 GeV cm energy shows two distinct classes of events: two prong no photon and high multiplicity events. If the high multiplicity events are attributed to the semi-leptonic decay of charmed particles the two prong no photon events must come from the weak decay of a different type of particle. The charged K to π ratio was measured for these events. The average number of charged kaons is 0.07 ± 0.06 per two prong event and 0.90 ± 0.18 per multiprong event. Thus the weak current responsible for the low multiplicity events has a small coupling to strange particles.

(1977). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(77)90361-6, Inclusive η production by e + e − annihilation for cm energies between 4 and 5.2 GeV was studied. A strong η signal was observed at 4.4 GeV, produced predominantly in conjunction with a low energy photon suggestive of F F ∗ or F ∗ F ∗ production. From events containing a π ± , and η, and a low energy photon the F and F ∗ masses were found to be 2.03 ± 0.06 and 2.14 ± 0.06 GeV, respectively.
