We investigate existence of global in time solutions and blow-up of solutions to the semilinear heat equation posed on infinite graphs. The source term is a general function $f(u)$. We always assume that the infimum of the spectrum of the Laplace operator $\lambda_1(G)$ on the graph is positive. We study nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy problem for the Fractional Fast Diffusion Equation on a suitable class of connected, noncompact Riemannian manifolds. This parabolic equation is both singular and nonlocal: the diffusion is driven by the (spectral) fractional Laplacian on the manifold, while the nonlinearity is a concave power makes the diffusion singular, so that solutions lose mass and may extinguish in finite time. Existence of mild solutions follows by nowadays standard nonlinear semigroups techniques, and we use these solutions as the building blocks for a more general class of so-called weak dual solutions, which allow for data both in the usual $L^1$ space and in a larger weighted space, determined in terms of the fractional Green function. We focus in particular on a priori smoothing estimates (also in weighted $L^p$ spaces) for a quite large class of weak dual solutions. We also show pointwise lower bounds for solutions, showing in particular that solutions have infinite speed of propagation. Finally, we start the study of how solutions extinguish in finite time, providing suitable sharp extinction rates.

We consider the porous medium equation (PME) on complete noncompact manifolds $M$ of nonnegative Ricci curvature. We require nonparabolicity of the manifold and construct a natural space $X$ of functions, strictly larger than $L^1$, in which the Green function on $M$ appears as a weight, such that the PME admits a solution in the weak dual (i.e. potential) sense whenever the initial datum $u_0$ is nonnegative and belongs to $X$. Stochastic incompleteness of a Riemannian manifold $M$ amounts to the nonconservation of probability for the heat semigroup on $M$. We show that this property is equivalent to the existence of nonnegative, nontrivial, bounded (sub)solutions to $\Delta W=\psi(W)$ for one, hence all, general nonlinearity $\psi$ which is only required to be continuous, nondecreasing, with $\psi(0)=0$ and $\psi>0$ in $(0,+\infty)$. Similar statements hold for unsigned (sub)solutions. We consider reaction-diffusion equations driven by the $p$-Laplacian on noncompact, infinite volume manifolds assumed to support the Sobolev inequality and, in some cases, to have $L^2$ spectrum bounded away from zero, the main example we have in mind being the hyperbolic space of any dimension. It is shown that, under appropriate conditions on the parameters involved and smallness conditions on the initial data, global in time solutions exist and suitable smoothing effects, namely explicit bounds on the $L^\infty$ norm of solutions at all positive times, in terms of $L^q$ norms of the data. We consider very weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, that are assumed to satisfy general curvature bounds and to be stochastically complete. We identify a class of initial data that can grow at infinity at a prescribed rate, which depends on the assumed curvature bounds through an integral function, such that the corresponding solution exists at least on $[0,T]$ for a suitable $T>0$. The maximal existence time $T$ is estimated in terms of a suitable weighted norm of the initial datum. Our results are sharp, in the sense that slower growth rates yield global existence, whereas one can construct data with critical growth for which the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time. Under further assumptions, uniqueness of very weak solutions is also proved, in the same growth class.

It is well known from the work of [2] that the Fujita phenomenon for reaction-diffusion evolution equations with power nonlinearities does not occur on the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^N$, thus marking a striking difference with the Euclidean situation. We show that, on classes of manifolds in which the bottom $\Lambda$ of the $L^2$ spectrum of $-\Delta$ is strictly positive (the hyperbolic space being thus included), a different version of the Fujita phenomenon occurs for other kinds of nonlinearities, in which the role of the critical Fujita exponent in the Euclidean case is taken by $\Lambda$. Such nonlinearities are time-independent, in contrast to the ones studied in [2]. We consider the porous medium equation with a power-like reaction term, posed on Riemannian manifolds. We investigate the well-posedness of the fast diffusion equation (FDE) in a wide class of noncompact Riemannian manifolds. Existence and uniqueness of solutions for globally integrable initial data was established in [5]. However, in the Euclidean space, it is known from Herrero and Pierre [20] that the Cauchy problem associated with the FDE is well posed for initial data that are merely in $ L^1_{\mathrm{loc}} $. We establish here that such data still give rise to global solutions on general Riemannian manifolds. If, in addition, the radial Ricci curvature satisfies a suitable pointwise bound from below (possibly diverging to $-\infty$ at spatial infinity), we prove that also uniqueness holds, for the same type of data, in the class of strong solutions. Besides, under the further assumption that the initial datum is in $L^2_{\mathrm{loc}}$ and nonnegative, a minimal solution is shown to exist, and we are able to establish uniqueness of purely (nonnegative) distributional solutions, which to our knowledge was not known before even in the Euclidean space. The required curvature bound is in fact sharp, since on model manifolds it turns out to be equivalent to stochastic completeness, and it was shown in [13] that uniqueness for the FDE fails even in the class of bounded solutions on manifolds that are not stochastically complete. Qualitatively this amounts to asking that the curvature diverges at most quadratically at infinity. A crucial ingredient of the uniqueness result is the proof of nonexistence of distributional subsolutions to certain semilinear elliptic equations with power nonlinearities, of independent interest.

We consider the nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation of porous medium type, whose diffusion is driven by the (spectral) fractional Laplacian on the hyperbolic space. We provide existence results for solutions, in an appropriate weak sense, for data belonging either to the usual $L^p$ spaces or to larger (weighted) spaces determined either in terms of a ground state of $\Delta_{\mathbb{H}^n}$, or of the (fractional) Green's function. For such solutions, we also prove different kind of smoothing effects, in the form of quantitative $L^1-L^\infty$ estimates. To the best of our knowledge, this seems the first time in which the fractional porous medium equation has been treated on non-compact, geometrically non-trivial examples.

We prove existence and uniqueness of distributional, bounded, nonnegative solutions to a fractional filtration equation in ${\mathbb R}^d$. With regards to uniqueness, it was shown even for more general equations in [19] that if two bounded solutions $u,w$ of (1.1) satisfy $u-w\in L^1({\mathbb R}^d\times(0,T))$, then $u=w$. We obtain here that this extra assumption can in fact be removed and establish uniqueness in the class of merely bounded solutions, provided they are nonnegative. We prove that conservation of probability for the free heat semigroup on a Riemannian manifold $M$ (namely stochastic completeness), hence a linear property, is equivalent to uniqueness of positive, bounded solutions to nonlinear evolution equations of fast diffusion type on $M$ of the form $u_t=\Delta \phi(u)$, $\phi$ being an arbitrary concave, increasing positive function, regular outside the origin and with $\phi(0)=0$. We prove \emph{optimal} improvements of the Hardy inequality on the hyperbolic space. Here, optimal means that the resulting operator is critical in the sense of [J.Funct.Anal. 266 (2014), pp. 4422-89], namely the associated inequality cannot be further improved. Such inequalities arise from more general, \emph{optimal} ones valid for the operator $ P_{\lambda}:= -\Delta_{\mathbb{H}^N} - \lambda$ where $0 \leq \lambda \leq \lambda_{1}(\mathbb{H}^N)$ and $\lambda_{1}(\mathbb{H}^N)$ is the bottom of the $L^2$ spectrum of $-\Delta_{\mathbb{H}^N} $, a problem that had been studied in [J.Funct.Anal. 272 (2017), pp. 1661-1703 ] only for the operator $P_{\lambda_{1}(\mathbb{H}^N)}$. A different, critical and new inequality on $\mathbb{H}^N$, locally of Hardy type, is also shown. Such results have in fact greater generality since there are shown on general Cartan-Hadamard manifolds under curvature assumptions, possibly depending on the point. Existence/nonexistence of extremals for the related Hardy-Poincar\'e inequalities are also proved using concentration-compactness technique and a Liouville comparison theorem. We study the long-time behaviour of nonnegative solutions of the Porous Medium Equation posed on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds having very large negative curvature, more precisely when the sectional or Ricci curvatures diverge at infinity more than quadratically in terms of the geodesic distance to the pole. We find an unexpected separate-variable behaviour that reminds one of Dirichlet problems on bounded Euclidean domains. As a crucial step, we prove existence of solutions to a related sublinear elliptic problem, a result of independent interest. Uniqueness of solutions vanishing at infinity is also shown, along with comparison principles, both in the parabolic and in the elliptic case. Our results complete previous analyses of the Porous Medium Equation flow on negatively curved Riemannian manifolds, which were carried out first for the hyperbolic space and then for general Cartan-Hadamard manifolds with a negative curvature having at most quadratic growth. We point out that no similar analysis seems to exist for the linear heat flow. We investigate the possibility of improving the $p$-Poincar\'e inequality $\|\nabla_{\mathbb{H}^N} u\|_p \ge \Lambda_p \|u\|_p$ on the hyperbolic space, where $p>2$ and $\Lambda_p:=[(N-1)/p]^{p}$ is the best constant for which such inequality holds. We prove several different, and independent, improved inequalities, one of which is a Poincar\'e-Hardy inequality, namely an improvement of the best $p$-Poincar\'e inequality in terms of the Hardy weight $r^{-p}$, $r$ being geodesic distance from a given pole. We show existence and uniqueness of very weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds satisfying suitable lower bounds on Ricci curvature, with initial data that can grow at infinity at a prescribed rate, that depends crucially on the curvature bounds. The curvature conditions we require are sharp for uniqueness in the sense that if they are not satisfied then, in general, there can be infinitely many solutions of the Cauchy problem even for bounded data. Furthermore, under matching upper bounds on sectional curvatures, we give a precise estimate for the maximal existence time, and we show that in general solutions do not exist if the initial data grow at infinity too fast. This proves in particular that the growth rate of the data we consider is optimal for existence. Pointwise blow-up is also shown for a particular class of manifolds and of initial data.

We consider nonnegative solutions of the porous medium equation (PME) on a Cartan-Hadamard manifold whose negative curvature can be unbounded. We take compactly supported initial data because we are also interested in free boundaries. We classify the geometrical cases we study into quasi-hyperbolic, quasi-Euclidean and critical cases, depending on the growth rate of the curvature at infinity. We prove sharp upper and lower bounds on the long-time behaviour of the solutions in terms of corresponding bounds on the curvature. In particular we obtain a sharp form of the smoothing effect on such manifolds. We also estimate the location of the free boundary. A global Harnack principle follows. We also present a change of variables that allows to transform radially symmetric solutions of the PME on model manifolds into radially symmetric solutions of a corresponding weighted PME on Euclidean space and back. This equivalence turns out to be an important tool of the theory.

We investigate existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation on negatively curved Riemannian manifolds. We show existence of solutions taking as initial condition a finite Radon measure, not necessarily positive. We then establish uniqueness in the class of nonnegative solutions. On the other hand, we prove that any weak solution of the porous medium equation necessarily takes on as initial datum a finite Radon measure. In addition, we obtain some results in potential analysis on manifolds, concerning the validity of a modified version of the mean-value inequality for superharmonic functions, and properties of potentials of positive Radon measures. We study Hardy-type inequalities associated to the quadratic form of the shifted Laplacian $-\Delta_{\mathbb H^N}-(N-1)^2/4$ on the hyperbolic space ${\mathbb H}^N$, $(N-1)^2/4$ being, as it is well-known, the bottom of the $L^2$-spectrum of $-\Delta_{\mathbb H^N}$. We find the optimal constant in the resulting Poincar\'e-Hardy inequality, which includes a further remainder term which makes it sharp also locally. A related inequality under suitable curvature assumption on more general manifolds is also shown. We prove three sharp bounds for solutions to the porous medium equation posed on Riemannian manifolds, or for weighted versions of such equation. Firstly we prove a smoothing effect for solutions which is valid on any Cartan-Hadamard manifold whose sectional curvatures are bounded above by a strictly negative constant. This bound includes as a special case the sharp smoothing effect recently proved by V\'azquez on the hyperbolic space in \cite{V}, which is similar to the absolute bound valid in the case of bounded Euclidean domains but has a logarithmic correction. Secondly we prove a bound which interpolates between such smoothing effect and the Euclidean one, supposing a suitable quantitative Sobolev inequality holds, showing that it is sharp by means of explicit examples. Finally, assuming a stronger functional inequality of sub-Poincar\'e type, we prove that the above mentioned (sharp) absolute bound holds, and provide examples of weighted porous media equations on manifolds of infinite volume in which it holds, in contrast with the non-weighted Euclidean situation. We consider a Schr\"odinger hamiltonian $H(A,a)$ with scaling critical and time independent external electromagnetic potential, and assume that the angular operator $L$ associated to $H$ is positive definite. We prove the following: if $\|e^{-itH(A,a)}\|_{L^1\to L^\infty}\lesssim t^{-n/2}$, then $ \||x|^{-g(n)}e^{-itH(A,a)}|x|^{-g(n)}\|_{L^1\to L^\infty}\lesssim t^{-n/2-g(n)}$, $g(n)$ being a positive number, explicitly depending on the ground level of $L$ and the space dimension $n$. We are concerned with the long time behaviour of solutions to the fractional porous medium equation with a variable spatial density. We prove that if the density decays slowly at infinity, then the solution approaches the Barenblatt-type solution of a proper singular fractional problem. If, on the contrary, the density decays rapidly at infinity, we show that the minimal solution multiplied by a suitable power of the time variable converges to the minimal solution of a certain fractional sublinear elliptic equation., Comment: To appear in DCDS-A

We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of porous media equations driven by the fractional Laplacian when the initial data are positive finite Radon measures on the Euclidean space. For given solutions without a prescribed initial condition, the problem of existence and uniqueness of the initial trace is also addressed. By the same methods we can also treat weighted fractional porous media equations, with a weight that can be singular at the origin, and must have a sufficiently slow decay at infinity (power-like). In particular, we show that the Barenblatt-type solutions exist and are unique. Such a result has a crucial role in [24], where the asymptotic behavior of solutions is investigated. We consider radial solutions to the fast diffusion equation $u_t=\Delta u^m$ on the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{N}$ for $N \ge 2$, $m\in(m_s,1)$, $m_s=\frac{N-2}{N+2}$. By radial we mean solutions depending only on the geodesic distance $r$ from a given point $o \in \mathbb{H}^N$. We investigate their fine asymptotics near the extinction time $T$ in terms of a separable solution of the form ${\mathcal V}(r,t)=(1-t/T)^{1/(1-m)}V^{1/m}(r)$, where $V$ is the unique positive energy solution, radial w.r.t. $o$, to $-\Delta V=c\,V^{1/m}$ for a suitable $c>0$, a semilinear elliptic problem thoroughly studied in \cite{MS08}, \cite{BGGV}. We show that $u$ converges to ${\mathcal V}$ in relative error, in the sense that $\|{u^m(\cdot,t)}/{{\mathcal V}^m(\cdot,t)}-1\|_\infty\to0$ as $t\to T^-$. We study existence, uniqueness and stability of radial solutions of the Lane-Emden-Fowler equation $-\Delta_g u=|u|^{p-1}u$ in a class of Riemannian models $(M,g)$ of dimension $n\ge 3$ which includes the classical hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^n$ as well as manifolds with sectional curvatures unbounded below. Sign properties and asymptotic behavior of solutions are influenced by the critical Sobolev exponent while the so-called Joseph-Lundgren exponent is involved in the stability of solutions.

We consider two-dimensional Schr\"odinger operators $H$ with Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field and an additional electric potential. We obtain an explicit leading term of the asymptotic expansion of the unitary group $e^{-i t H}$ for $t\to\infty$ in weighted $L^2$ spaces. We study a class of nonlinear diffusion equations whose model is the classical porous media equation on domains $\Omega\subseteq{\mathbb R}^N$, $N\ge3$, with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. Firstly we improve some known results in such model case, both as concerns sharp $L^{q_0}$-$L^\infty$ regularizing properties of the evolution for short time and as concerns sharp long time asymptotics in the sense of $L^\infty$ convergence of solutions to their mean value. The generality of the discussion allows to consider, almost at the same time, also weighted versions of the above equation provided an appropriate weighted Sobolev inequality is required to hold. \normalcolor In fact, we show that the validity of a slightly weaker functional inequality is equivalent to the validity of a suitable $L^{q_0}$-$L^\infty$ bound for solutions to the associated weighted porous media equation. The long time asymptotic analysis relies as well on the assumed weighted Sobolev inequality only, and allows to prove uniform convergence to the mean value, with the rate predicted by linearization, in such generality. This fact was not known even for the explicit classes of weights previously considered in the literature.

We study weighted porous media equations on domains $\Omega\subseteq{\mathbb R}^N$, either with Dirichlet or with Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions when $\Omega\not={\mathbb R}^N$. Existence of weak solutions and uniqueness in a suitable class is studied in detail. Moreover, $L^{q_0}$-$L^\varrho$ smoothing effects ($1\leq q_0<\varrho<\infty$) are discussed for short time, in connection with the validity of a Poincar\'e inequality in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces, and the long-time asymptotic behaviour is also studied. We prove on-diagonal bounds for the heat kernel of the Dirichlet Laplacian $-\Delta^D_\Omega$ in locally twisted three-dimensional tubes $\Omega$. In particular, we show that for any fixed $x$ the heat kernel decays for large times as $\mathrm{e}^{-E_1t}\, t^{-3/2}$, where $E_1$ is the fundamental eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on the cross section of the tube. This shows that any, suitably regular, local twisting speeds up the decay of the heat kernel with respect to the case of straight (untwisted) tubes. Moreover, the above large time decay is valid for a wide class of subcritical operators defined on a straight tube. We study the Emden-Fowler equation $-\Delta u=|u|^{p-1}u$ on the hyperbolic space ${\mathbb H}^n$. We are interested in radial solutions, namely solutions depending only on the geodesic distance from a given point. The critical exponent for such equation is $p=(n+2)/(n-2)$ as in the Euclidean setting, but the properties of the solutions show striking differences with the Euclidean case. While the papers \cite{mancini, bhakta} consider finite energy solutions, we shall deal here with infinite energy solutions and we determine the exact asymptotic behavior of wide classes of finite and infinite energy solutions.

We consider the Fast Diffusion Equation $u_t=\Delta u^m$ posed in a bounded smooth domain $\Omega\subset \RR^d$ with homogeneous Dirichlet conditions; the exponent range is $m_s=(d-2)_+/(d+2)

The goal of this note is to state the optimal decay rate for solutions of the nonlinear fast diffusion equation and, in self-similar variables, the optimal convergence rates to Barenblatt self-similar profiles and their generalizations. It relies on the identification of the optimal constants in some related Hardy-Poincar\'e inequalities and concludes a long series of papers devoted to generalized entropies, functional inequalities and rates for nonlinear diffusion equations.

We consider the asymptotic behaviour of positive solutions $u(t,x)$ of the fast diffusion equation $u_t=\Delta (u^{m}/m)={\rm div} (u^{m-1}\nabla u)$ posed for $x\in\RR^d$, $t>0$, with a precise value for the exponent $m=(d-4)/(d-2)$. The space dimension is $d\ge 3$ so that $m<1$, and even $m=-1$ for $d=3$. This case had been left open in the general study \cite{BBDGV} since it requires quite different functional analytic methods, due in particular to the absence of a spectral gap for the operator generating the linearized evolution. The linearization of this flow is interpreted here as the heat flow of the Laplace-Beltrami operator of a suitable Riemannian Manifold $(\RR^d,{\bf g})$, with a metric ${\bf g}$ which is conformal to the standard $\RR^d$ metric. Studying the pointwise heat kernel behaviour allows to prove {suitable Gagliardo-Nirenberg} inequalities associated to the generator. Such inequalities in turn allow to study the nonlinear evolution as well, and to determine its asymptotics, which is identical to the one satisfied by the linearization. In terms of the rescaled representation, which is a nonlinear Fokker--Planck equation, the convergence rate turns out to be polynomial in time. This result is in contrast with the known exponential decay of such representation for all other values of $m$., Comment: 37 pages

A suitable notion of hypercontractivity for a nonlinear semigroup $\{T_t\}$ is shown to imply Gagliardo--Nirenberg inequalities for its generator $H$, provided a subhomogeneity property holds for the energy functional $(u,Hu)$. We use this fact to prove that, for semigroups generated by operators of $p$--Laplacian--type, hypercontractivity implies ultracontractivity. We then introduce the notion of subordinated nonlinear semigroups when the corresponding Bernstein function is $f(x)=x^\alpha$, and write down an explicit formula for the associated generator. It is shown that, in certain cases, hypercontractivity still holds for the subordinated semigroup and, hence, that Nash--type inequalities holds as well for the subordinated generator., Comment: 19 pages

We consider non-negative solutions of the fast diffusion equation $u_t=\Delta u^m$ with $m \in (0,1)$, in the Euclidean space R^d, d?3, and study the asymptotic behavior of a natural class of solutions, in the limit corresponding to $t\to\infty$ for $m\ge m_c=(d-2)/d$, or as t approaches the extinction time when m < mc. For a class of initial data we prove that the solution converges with a polynomial rate to a self-similar solution, for t large enough if $m\ge m_c$, or close enough to the extinction time if m < mc. Such results are new in the range $m\le m_c$ where previous approaches fail. In the range mc < m < 1 we improve on known results.
