Abstract

Next-generation low-frequency interferometers are expected to detect binary systems near supermassive black holes, where tidal effects can alter significantly the motion of the binary. This motivates a broader investigation of how external gravitational fields influence the dynamics of physical systems. In this work, we consider a charged black hole binary system subject to a gravitational tide. We first construct a stationary gravitational tide acting on a dyonic Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole and, focusing on the extreme mass-ratio limit, we analyze the motion of a test particle. By calculating the secular Hamiltonian of the test particle, we obtain the ISCO and light ring tidal shifts in terms of explicit functions of the parameters of the binary. Our results show that tidal corrections are suppressed as the charge of the black hole increases, but they persist in the extremal limit yielding a finite contribution. 2. SEA: State-Exchange Attention for High-Fidelity Physics Based Transformers

Abstract

Current approaches using sequential networks have shown promise in estimating field variables for dynamical systems, but they are often limited by high rollout errors. The unresolved issue of rollout error accumulation results in unreliable estimations as the network predicts further into the future, with each step's error compounding and leading to an increase in inaccuracy. Here, we introduce the State-Exchange Attention (SEA) module, a novel transformer-based module enabling information exchange between encoded fields through multi-head cross-attention. The cross-field multidirectional information exchange design enables all state variables in the system to exchange information with one another, capturing physical relationships and symmetries between fields. Additionally, we introduce an efficient ViT-like mesh autoencoder to generate spatially coherent mesh embeddings for a large number of meshing cells. The SEA integrated transformer demonstrates the state-of-the-art rollout error compared to other competitive baselines. Specifically, we outperform PbGMR-GMUS Transformer-RealNVP and GMR-GMUS Transformer, with a reduction in error of 88% and 91%, respectively. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the SEA module alone can reduce errors by 97% for state variables that are highly dependent on other states of the system. 3. Direct current memory effects in effective-one-body waveform models

Abstract

The direct current (DC) memory is a non-oscillatory, hereditary component of the gravitational wave (GW) signal that represents one of the most peculiar manifestations of the nonlinear nature of GW emission and propagation. In this work, by transforming the results provided in Ebersold et al. [Phys.Rev.D 100 (2019) 8, 084043] in harmonic coordinates and quasi-Keplerian parametrization, we provide the DC memory in terms of the effective-one-body (EOB) phase-space variables, with a relative accuracy of 2.5PN and in an expansion for small eccentricity up to order six. Our results are then implemented in TEOBResumS-Dal\'i, thus providing the first EOB model with DC memory contributions. This model is then used to assess the impact on the waveform and the main features of the DC memory, also addressing its dependence on the eccentricity of the binary system at its formation., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

DarkSide-20k (DS-20k) is a dark matter detection experiment under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy. It utilises ~100 t of low radioactivity argon from an underground source (UAr) in its inner detector, with half serving as target in a dual-phase time projection chamber (TPC). The UAr cryogenics system must maintain stable thermodynamic conditions throughout the experiment's lifetime of >10 years. Continuous removal of impurities and radon from the UAr is essential for maximising signal yield and mitigating background. We are developing an efficient and powerful cryogenics system with a gas purification loop with a target circulation rate of 1000 slpm. Central to its design is a condenser operated with liquid nitrogen which is paired with a gas heat exchanger cascade, delivering a combined cooling power of >8 kW. Here we present the design choices in view of the DS-20k requirements, in particular the condenser's working principle and the cooling control, and we show test results obtained with a dedicated benchmarking platform at CERN and LNGS. We find that the thermal efficiency of the recirculation loop, defined in terms of nitrogen consumption per argon flow rate, is 95 % and the pressure in the test cryostat can be maintained within $\pm$(0.1-0.2) mbar. We further detail a 5-day cool-down procedure of the test cryostat, maintaining a cooling rate typically within -2 K/h, as required for the DS-20k inner detector. Additionally, we assess the circuit's flow resistance, and the heat transfer capabilities of two heat exchanger geometries for argon phase change, used to provide gas for recirculation. We conclude by discussing how our findings influence the finalisation of the system design, including necessary modifications to meet requirements and ongoing testing activities., Comment: 45 pages, 24 figures

5. Atoms as electron accelerators for measuring the $e^+e^- \to\,$hadrons cross section

Abstract

The hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to $(g-2)_\mu$ can be determined via dispersive methods from $e^+e^-\to\;$hadrons data. We propose a novel approach to measure the hadronic cross section $\sigma_{\mathrm{had}}$ as an alternative to the initial-state radiation and energy scan techniques, which relies on positron annihilation off atomic electrons of a high $Z$ target ($^{238}$U, $Z=92$). We show that by leveraging the relativistic electron velocities of the inner atomic shells, a high-intensity $12\,$GeV positron beam, such as the one foreseen at JLab, can allow to measure $\sigma_{\mathrm{had}}$ with high statistical accuracy from the two-pion threshold up to above $\sqrt{s} \sim 1\,$GeV., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

The dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber is presently one of the leading technologies to search for dark matter particles with masses below 10 GeV/c$^2$. This was demonstrated by the DarkSide-50 experiment with approximately 50 kg of low-radioactivity liquid argon as target material. The next generation experiment DarkSide-20k, currently under construction, will use 1,000 times more argon and is expected to start operation in 2027. Based on the DarkSide-50 experience, here we assess the DarkSide-20k sensitivity to models predicting light dark matter particles, including Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and sub-GeV/c$^2$ particles interacting with electrons in argon atoms. With one year of data, a sensitivity improvement to dark matter interaction cross-sections by at least one order of magnitude with respect to DarkSide-50 is expected for all these models. A sensitivity to WIMP--nucleon interaction cross-sections below $1\times10^{-42}$ cm$^2$ is achievable for WIMP masses above 800 MeV/c$^2$. Abstract

Experiments aimed at direct searches for WIMP dark matter require highly effective reduction of backgrounds and control of any residual radioactive contamination. In particular, neutrons interacting with atomic nuclei represent an important class of backgrounds due to the expected similarity of a WIMP-nucleon interaction, so that such experiments often feature a dedicated neutron detector surrounding the active target volume. In the context of the development of DarkSide-20k detector at INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), several R&D projects were conceived and developed for the creation of a new hybrid material rich in both hydrogen and gadolinium nuclei to be employed as an essential element of the neutron detector. Thanks to its very high cross-section for neutron capture, gadolinium is one of the most widely used elements in neutron detectors, while the hydrogen-rich material is instrumental in efficiently moderating the neutrons. In this paper results from one of the R&Ds are presented. In this effort the new hybrid material was obtained as a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, loaded with gadolinium oxide in the form of nanoparticles. We describe its realization, including all phases of design, purification, construction, characterization, and determination of mechanical properties of the new material.

Abstract

In the evaluation of scientific publications' impact, the interplay between intrinsic quality and non-scientific factors remains a subject of debate. While peer review traditionally assesses quality, bibliometric techniques gauge scholarly impact. This study investigates the role of non-scientific attributes alongside quality scores from peer review in determining scholarly impact. Leveraging data from the first Italian Research Assessment Exercise (VTR 2001-2003) and Web of Science citations, we analyse the relationship between quality scores, non-scientific factors, and publication short- and long-term impact. Our findings shed light on the significance of non-scientific elements overlooked in peer review, offering policymakers and research management insights in choosing evaluation methodologies. Sections delve into the debate, identify non-scientific influences, detail methodologies, present results, and discuss implications.

Resonant positron annihilation on atomic electrons provides a powerful method to search for light new particles coupled to $e^+e^-$. Reliable estimates of production rates require a detailed characterization of electron momentum distributions. We describe a general method that harnesses the target material Compton profile to properly include electron velocity effects in resonant annihilation cross-sections. We additionally find that high $Z$ atoms can efficiently act as particle physics accelerators, providing a density of relativistic electrons that allows to extend by several times the experimental mass reach., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

The stability of a dark matter detector on the timescale of a few years is a key requirement due to the large exposure needed to achieve a competitive sensitivity. It is especially crucial to enable the detector to potentially detect any annual event rate modulation, an expected dark matter signature. In this work, we present the performance history of the DarkSide-50 dual-phase argon time projection chamber over its almost three-year low-radioactivity argon run. In particular, we focus on the electroluminescence signal that enables sensitivity to sub-keV energy depositions. The stability of the electroluminescence yield is found to be better than 0.5%. Finally, we show the temporal evolution of the observed event rate around the sub-keV region being consistent to the background prediction., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The ecological dynamics of interacting predator and prey populations can display sustained oscillations, as for instance predicted by the Rosenzweig-MacArthur predator-prey model. The presence of demographic stochasticity, due to the finiteness of population sizes, alters the amplitude and frequency of these oscillations. Here we present a method for characterizing the effects of demographic stochasticity on the limit cycle attractor of the Rosenzweig-MacArthur. We show that an angular Brownian motion well describes the frequency oscillations. In the vicinity of the bifurcation point, we obtain an analytical approximation for the angular diffusion constant. This approximation accurately captures the effect of demographic stochasticity across parameter values.

Abstract

Swirling spin textures, including topologically non-trivial states, such as skyrmions, chiral domain walls, and magnetic vortices, have garnered significant attention within the scientific community due to their appeal from both fundamental and applied points of view. However, their creation, controlled manipulation, and stability are typically constrained to certain systems with specific crystallographic symmetries, bulk, or interface interactions, and/or a precise stacking sequence of materials. Here, we make use of the stray field of YBa2Cu3O7-{\delta} superconducting microstructures in ferromagnet/superconductor hybrids to imprint magnetic radial vortices in permalloy at temperatures below the superconducting transition temperature (TC), a method easily extended to other ferromagnets with in-plane magnetic anisotropy. We examine the size dependence and temperature stability of the imprinted magnetic configurations. We show that above TC, magnetic domains retain memory of the imprinted spin texture. Micromagnetic modelling coupled with a SC field model reveals that the stabilization mechanism leading to this memory effect is mediated by microstructural defects. Superconducting control of swirling spin textures below and above the superconducting transition temperature holds promising prospects for shaping spintronics based on magnetic textures.

Abstract

We compare the QCD axion phase-space distribution from unitarized next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory with the one extracted from pion-scattering data. We derive a robust bound by confronting momentum-dependent Boltzmann equations against up-to-date observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background, of the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations and of primordial abundances. These datasets imply $m_{a} \leq \, 0.16 $~eV for the 95% credible interval, i.e. $\sim$30% stronger bound than what previously found. 26. The Garber Current Pattern: An Additional Contribution to AC Losses in Helical HTS Cables?

Abstract

Conductors made of high-temperature (HTS) wires helically wound in one or more layers on round tubes (CORT) are compact, flexible, and can carry a large amount of current. Although these conductors were initially developed for DC applications, e.g. in magnets, it is worth considering their use for AC, e.g. in underground cables for medium voltage grids and with currents in the kA-range. In these cases, the major challenge is reducing AC losses. In contrast to a straight superconducting wire, in a helical arrangement, due to superconducting shielding, the current does not follow the direction of the wires, but takes a non-trivial zig-zag path within the individual HTS wires (Garber pattern). This includes current components across the thickness of the superconducting layers, so that the often used thin-shell approximation does not hold. In this contribution, we studied a one-layer three-wire CORT by means of fully three-dimensional simulations, based on the H-formulation of Maxwell's equations implemented in the commercial software package COMSOL Multiphysics. As a result of our simulations, the peculiar current profiles were confirmed. In addition, the influence of current, pitch angle, and frequency on the AC losses was studied. We found an optimum for the pitch angle and that the current profiles strongly depend on frequency.

Abstract

Abstract The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is reliably one of the largest pandemics the world has suffered in recent years. In the search for non-biological antivirals, special emphasis was placed on drug repurposing to accelerate the clinical implementation of effective drugs. The life cycle of the virus has been extensively investigated and many human targets have been identified, such as the molecular chaperone GRP78, representing a host auxiliary factor for SARS-CoV-2 entry. Here we report the inhibitor capacity of TL1228, a small molecule discovered through an in silico screening approach, which could interfere with the interaction of SARS-CoV-2 and its target cells, blocking the recognition of the GRP78 cellular receptor by the viral Spike protein. TL1228 showed in vitro the ability to reduce significantly both pseudoviral and authentic viral activity even through the reduction of GRP78/ACE2 transcript levels. Importantly, TL1228 acts in modulating expression levels of innate immunity and as inflammation markers.

Abstract

Abstract IP3 receptor (IP3R)-mediated Ca2+ transfer at the mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contact sites (MERCS) drives mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake and oxidative metabolism and is linked to different pathologies, including Parkinson’s disease (PD). The dependence of Ca2+ transfer efficiency on the ER-mitochondria distance remains unexplored. Employing molecular rulers that stabilize ER-mitochondrial distances at 5 nm resolution, and using genetically encoded Ca2+ indicators targeting the ER lumen and the sub-mitochondrial compartments, we now show that a distance of ~20 nm is optimal for Ca2+ transfer and mitochondrial oxidative metabolism due to enrichment of IP3R at MERCS. In human iPSC-derived astrocytes from PD patients, 20 nm MERCS were specifically reduced, which correlated with a reduction of mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake. Stabilization of the ER-mitochondrial interaction at 20 nm, but not at 10 nm, fully rescued mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake in PD astrocytes. Our work determines with precision the optimal distance for Ca2+ flux between ER and mitochondria and suggests a new paradigm for fine control over mitochondrial function.

Abstract Background Some chromatinopathies may present with common clinical findings (intellectual disability, brain and limb malformation, facial dysmorphism). Furthermore, one of their cardinal shared features is growth dysregulation.We aimed to assess and deepen this resemblance in three specific conditions, namely Wiedemann-Steiner (WDSTS), Kleefstra (KLEFS1) and Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS1), with a particular focus on possible metabolic roots. Methods Eleven patients were enrolled, three with WDSTS, five with KLEFS1 and three with CSS1, referring to Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore, Milan, Italy. We performed both a physical examination with detailed anthropometric measurements and an evaluation of the patients’ REE (rest energy expenditure) by indirect calorimetry, comparing the results with age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Results We observed new clinical features and overlap between these conditions suggesting that different disturbances of epigenetic machinery genes can converge on a common effect, leading to overlapping clinical phenotypes. The REE was not distinguishable between the three conditions and healthy controls. Conclusions Epigenetic machinery plays an essential role both in growth regulation and in neurodevelopment; we recommend evaluating skeletal [craniovertebral junction abnormalities (CVJ) polydactyly], otolaryngological [obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAs), recurrent otitis media], dental [tooth agenesis, talon cusps], and central nervous system (CNS) [olfactory bulbs and cerebellum anomalies] features. These features could be included in monitoring guidelines. Further studies are needed to deepen the knowledge about energy metabolism.

Abstract

Abstract Background Silver-Russell Syndrome (SRS, MIM #180860) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder characterized by intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation; SRS is also accompanied by dysmorphic features such as triangular facial appearance, broad forehead, body asymmetry and significant feeding difficulties. The incidence is unknown but estimated at 1:30,000-100,000 live births. The diagnosis of SRS is guided by specific criteria described in the Netchine–Harbison clinical scoring system (NH-CSS). Case presentation Hereby we describe four patients with syndromic short stature in whom, despite fitting the criteria for SRS genetic analysis (and one on them even meeting the clinical criteria for SRS), molecular analysis actually diagnosed a different syndrome. Some additional features such as hypotonia, microcephaly, developmental delay and/or intellectual disability, and family history of growth failure, were actually discordant with SRS in our cohort. Conclusions The clinical resemblance of other short stature syndromes with SRS poses a risk of diagnostic failure, in particular when clinical SRS only criteria are met, allowing SRS diagnosis in the absence of a positive result of a genetic test. The presence of additional features atypical for SRS diagnosis becomes a red flag for a more extensive and thorough analysis. The signs relevant to the differential diagnosis should be valued as much as possible since a correct diagnosis of these patients is the only way to provide the appropriate care pathway, a thorough genetic counselling, prognosis definition, follow up setting, appropriate monitoring and care of possible medical problems.

31. Creative Minds at Rest: Creative Individuals are More Associative and Engaged with Their Idle Thoughts

Abstract

Despite an established body of research characterizing how creative individuals explore their "external" world, relatively little is known about how such individuals navigate their "inner mental life", especially in unstructured contexts such as periods of awake rest. Across two studies, the present manuscript tested the hypothesis that creative individuals are more engaged with their idle thoughts and more associative in the dynamic transitions between them. Study 1 captured the real-time conscious experiences of 81 adults as they voiced aloud the content of their mind moment-by-moment across a 10-minute unconstrained baseline period. Higher originality scores on a divergent thinking task were associated with less perceived boredom, more words spoken overall, more freely moving thoughts, and more loosely-associative (as opposed to sharp) transitions during the baseline rest period. In Study 2, across 2,612 participants, those who reported higher self-rated creativity also reported less perceived boredom during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time during which many people experienced unusually extended periods of unstructured free time. Overall, these results suggest a tendency for creative individuals to be more engaged and explorative with their thoughts when task demands are relaxed, raising implications for resting state functional MRI and societal trends to devalue idle time.

Abstract

Given a straight-line drawing of a graph, a segment is a maximal set of edges that form a line segment. Given a planar graph $G$, the segment number of $G$ is the minimum number of segments that can be achieved by any planar straight-line drawing of $G$. The line cover number of $G$ is the minimum number of lines that support all the edges of a planar straight-line drawing of $G$. Computing the segment number or the line cover number of a planar graph is $\exists\mathbb{R}$-complete and, thus, NP-hard. We study the problem of computing the segment number from the perspective of parameterized complexity. We show that this problem is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to each of the following parameters: the vertex cover number, the segment number, and the line cover number. Abstract

The direct search for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP) is performed by detecting nuclear recoils (NR) produced in a target material from the WIMP elastic scattering. A promising experimental strategy for direct dark matter search employs argon dual-phase time projection chambers (TPC). One of the advantages of the TPC is the capability to detect both the scintillation and charge signals produced by NRs. Furthermore, the existence of a drift electric field in the TPC breaks the rotational symmetry: the angle between the drift field and the momentum of the recoiling nucleus can potentially affect the charge recombination probability in liquid argon and then the relative balance between the two signal channels. This fact could make the detector sensitive to the directionality of the WIMP-induced signal, enabling unmistakable annual and daily modulation signatures for future searches aiming for discovery. The Recoil Directionality (ReD) experiment was designed to probe for such directional sensitivity. The TPC of ReD was irradiated with neutrons at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, and data were taken with 72 keV NRs of known recoil directions. The direction-dependent liquid argon charge recombination model by Cataudella et al. was adopted and a likelihood statistical analysis was performed, which gave no indications of significant dependence of the detector response to the recoil direction. Abstract

Dark matter induced event rate in an Earth-based detector is predicted to show an annual modulation as a result of the Earth's orbital motion around the Sun. We searched for this modulation signature using the ionization signal of the DarkSide-50 liquid argon time projection chamber. Abstract

Anisotropic transport properties have been assessed in a number of cuprate superconductors, providing evidence for a nematic state. Here, we analyze recent experimental data for ultrathin YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) films, where nematicity is induced via strain engineering, leading to a suppression of charge density wave scattering along the orthorhombic a-axis and a concomitant enhancement of strange metal behavior along the b-axis. It is shown that the anisotropic properties strongly depend on the substrate, which we characterize by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Based on the AFM data, we provide a microscopic model that can account for the absence (presence) of nematicity and the resulting transport properties in films grown on SrTiO$_3$ (MgO) substrates., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Reconstructing semantic 3D building models at the level of detail (LoD) 3 is a long-standing challenge. Unlike mesh-based models, they require watertight geometry and object-wise semantics at the fa\c{c}ade level. The principal challenge of such demanding semantic 3D reconstruction is reliable fa\c{c}ade-level semantic segmentation of 3D input data. We present a novel method, called Scan2LoD3, that accurately reconstructs semantic LoD3 building models by improving fa\c{c}ade-level semantic 3D segmentation. To this end, we leverage laser physics and 3D building model priors to probabilistically identify model conflicts. These probabilistic physical conflicts propose locations of model openings: Their final semantics and shapes are inferred in a Bayesian network fusing multimodal probabilistic maps of conflicts, 3D point clouds, and 2D images. To fulfill demanding LoD3 requirements, we use the estimated shapes to cut openings in 3D building priors and fit semantic 3D objects from a library of fa\c{c}ade objects. Extensive experiments on the TUM city campus datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed Scan2LoD3 over the state-of-the-art methods in fa\c{c}ade-level detection, semantic segmentation, and LoD3 building model reconstruction.
