4. Size-dependent thermal stability and optical properties of ultra-small nanodiamonds synthesized under high pressure

Abstract

Diamond properties down to the quantum-size region are still poorly understood. High-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) synthesis from chloroadamantane molecules allows precise control of nanodiamond size. Thermal stability and optical properties of nanodiamonds with sizes spanning range from $<$1 to 8 nm are investigated. It is shown that hypothesis about enhanced thermal stability of nanodiamonds smaller than 2 nm is incorrect. The most striking feature in IR absorption of these samples is the appearance of an enhanced transmission band near the diamond Raman mode (1332 cm$^{-1}$). Following previously proposed explanation, we attribute this phenomenon to the Fano-effect caused by resonance of diamond Raman mode with continuum of conductive surface states. We assume that these surface states may be formed by reconstruction of broken bonds on the nanodiamond surfaces. This effect is also responsible for the observed asymmetry of Raman scattering peak. he mechanism of nanodiamond formation in HPHT synthesis is proposed, explaining pecularities of their structure and properties., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

The first lead neutron slowing-down spectrometer (LSDS) from a pulsed source in elastic scattering on lead nuclei has been constructed in the laboratory of the atomic nucleus of the Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences LPI. Currently, there are several operating lead neutron slowing-down spectrometers: LSDS-100 in Russia, RINS in United States, KULS in Japan and others. A relation between an energy of lead slowing-down moderated neutrons E (eV) and the time delay of t ({\mu}s) is described by the expression: E(t) = K/(t + t_0)^2, where values of K=170.5 (keV {\mu}s^2), t_0 = 0.3 ({\mu}s) in the case of the LSDS-100 have been measured in the previous experiment. The energy resolution of LSDS is low (30-45%) and is being determined experimentally, but the aperture ratio luminosity of the neutron flux detector is 10^2-10^4 times greater than in the case of a time of flight method technique. Abstract

The paper is devoted to group analysis of the spatially homogeneous and isotropic Boltzmann equation with a source term. In fact, the Fourier transform of the Boltzmann equation with respect to the molecular velocity variable is considered. Using a particular class of solutions, the determining equation for the admitted Lie group is reduced to a partial differential equation for the source function. The latter equation is analyzed by an algebraic method. A complete group classification of the Fourier transform of the Boltzmann equation is given. All invariant solutions of this equation are also presented in the paper.

Abstract

The muon capture rate in the reaction mu- 3He -> nu + 3H has been measured at PSI using a modular high pressure ionization chamber. The rate corresponding to statistical hyperfine population of the mu-3He atom is (1496.0 +- 4.0) s^-1. Abstract

The effect of hyperenhancement of Raman scattering (RS) appearing on microcracks of the metal deposition (silver and gold) of uniaxially stretched polymer track-etched membranes is investigated. Deformation of membranes with a combination of high surface density and small diameter of their pores leads to the development of many microcracks in the metal coating. The efficiency of the surface enhancement RS (SERS) of the synthesized metasurfaces has been investigated on the example of organic compound malachite green, and the possibility to recognize extremely low fractions of the substance was demonstrated. An increase in the SERS signal with an increase in the deformation of the samples and even greater enhancement after their unloading and relaxation were found. The experiment on tensile strain and relaxation of the deformation of the samples and the consequent change in their electrical conductivity confirm the assumption that SERS appears on microcracks edges with a rather small distance between their boundaries. The SERS technique is proposed to analyze the formation of micro- and nanocracks on metal coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: The results of studying the structural features of samples of zinc-oxide films obtained by magnetron deposition on chips of lanthanum-magnesium hexaaluminate and the surface of sapphire substrates with a gold buffer layer are presented. Analysis of the structure and morphology of the films is carried out using a set of methods, including high-resolution X-ray diffractometry, the method of constructing pole figures, and transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that when using cleavages of lanthanum-magnesium hexaaluminate, an epitaxial ZnO film is formed without signs of growth rotating domains. The use of a gold buffer layer during growth on sapphire substrates improves the crystalline quality of ZnO films, but does not completely suppress domain growth.

Abstract

The results of studying the specific features of the growth of zinc oxide films formed on sapphire substrates by magnetron sputtering in an inhomogeneous electric field are presented. The films have been analyzed by high-resolution X-ray diffractometry, pole figure technique, and electron microscopy. A sequence of changes in the lateral structure with an increase in the film thickness, which depends also on the local potential, is revealed. Thus, regions with a higher surface potential correspond to the ZnO〈10 0〉(0001)||Al2O3〈11 0〉(0001) epitaxial ratio with the least lattice mismatch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Based on regular porous polymeric membranes, the synthesis of metal and dielectric spearhead structures with given morphological characteristics was carried out. Copper structures with the ~ 1 μm height and dielectric spearhead microstructures made from iodic acid with the 12 μm height and 1 μm diameter were obtained. The possibility is discussed of using such optical elements to solve the problems of increasing the efficiency of IR radiation detection, signal amplification and conversion to visible and near-infrared ranges.
