Abstract Background Gaze behavior can serve as an objective tool in undergraduate pre-clinical dental education, helping to identify key areas of interest and common pitfalls in the routine evaluation of tooth preparations. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the gaze behavior of undergraduate dental students and dental educators while evaluating a single crown tooth preparation. Methods Thirty-five participants volunteered to participate in the study and were divided into a novice group (dental students, n = 18) and an expert group (dental educators, n = 17). Each participant wore a binocular eye-tracking device, and the total duration of fixation was evaluated as a metric to study the gaze behavior. Sixty photographs of twenty different tooth preparations in three different views (buccal, lingual, and occlusal) were prepared and displayed during the experimental session. The participants were asked to rate the tooth preparations on a 100 mm visual analog rating scale and were also asked to determine whether each tooth preparation was ready to make an impression. Each view was divided into different areas of interest. Statistical analysis was performed with a three-way analysis of the variance model with repeated measures. Results Based on the participants’ mean rates, the “best” and the “worst” tooth preparations were selected for analysis. The results showed a significantly longer time to decision in the novices compared to the experts (P = 0.003) and a significantly longer time to decision for both the groups in the best tooth preparation compared to the worst tooth preparation (P = 0.002). AimTo evaluate the nutritional status, nutritional risk, and dietary habits of patients treated with bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses in comparison with a group of natural dentate patients.MethodsA study group (n = 25, 8 women, mean age = 70.6 ± 7.5 years) with bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses and a control group (n = 25, 13 women, mean age = 69.0 ± 5.3) with a mean of 27.7 ± 1.8 natural teeth were recruited. The nutritional status and nutritional risk of the participants were evaluated with Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and Seniors in the Community: Risk Evaluation for Eating and Nutrition; (SCREEN-14), while the dietary habits were recorded by data from a three-day dietary record. The data were analyzed with the Mann–Whitney U-test and independent t-test to evaluate the differences between the groups.ResultsThe results showed that although both the groups had normal nutrition status as revealed by the MNA scores the study group showed significantly higher BMI (p = 0.005) but lower SCREEN-14 (p = 0.012) scores, than the control group. The results also showed that higher SCREEN-14 scores were significantly associated with higher odds of being in the control group, with an odds ratio of 1.159 (p = 0.024). Background: Chronic periodontitis (CP) is a chronic inflammatory disease, primarily caused by microbial infections and characterized by immune system dysfunction. The latter ultimately leads to the progressive destruction of the alveolar bone supporting the teeth in the jawbones. Chronic migraine (CM) is a complex disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of moderate to severe headaches that unfold over hours to days. The episodes are usually unilateral and generally associated with nausea and light and/or sound stimuli sensitivity. The disease is a common cause of disability and loss of working hours, as it significantly burdens the patient's daily life. CP and CM association is clinically relevant as both involve inflammatory mechanisms and immune dysfunction. Aim: To systematically review the literature on the epidemiological association between CP and CM in adults. Methods: The study protocol followed the PRISMA 2020 statement. The design of the study adhered to the Cochrane methodology. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases, as well as a manual search and evaluation of gray literature sources. The Review Manager (RevMan) 5.4 software was used for the meta-analysis. The effect size of the outcome was expressed as odds ratio (OR) with a 95 % confidence interval (CI), providing a measure of the association between CP and CM. The Chi-square test and I2 statistic were employed to assess heterogeneity among the included studies. The inclusion criteria were English language, observational (case-control) design, and report of the diagnostic criteria for CP and CM. Duplicate entries were excluded. The reliability and quality of the included studies were assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and GRADE tools. Two independent reviewers performed all evaluations and a third resolved discrepancies. Results: The meta-analysis included three observational studies with 522 participants. CM patients were 2.82 times more likely to be diagnosed with CP compared with healthy controls. This association was statistically significant (OR 2.82, 95 % CI 1.96–4.05, p < 0.0001); however, the external generalizability is limited because of the examination of data originating from populations with specific ethnic backgrounds. Conclusion: A high prevalence of CP was found among patients with CM compared with healthy controls. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the correlation between these pathological conditions to provide patients with high-quality care through an effective and comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic approach.

BackgroundPerinatal depression and anxiety (PDA) is prevalent in new and expectant mothers, affecting millions of women worldwide. Those with a history of mood and anxiety disorders are at the greatest risk of experiencing PDA in a subsequent pregnancy. Current safety concerns with pharmacological treatments have led to a greater need for adjunctive treatment options for PDA. Changes in the composition of the microbiome have been associated with various diseases during pregnancy, and these changes are thought to play some role in perinatal mood disorders. While the relationship between PDA and the microbiome has not been explored, evidence suggests that nutritional interventions with fiber, fish oils, and probiotics may play a favorable role in neuropsychiatric outcomes during and after pregnancy. The primary objective of the present study is to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a combination of nonpharmacological interventions to maintain stability in pregnant women who have a history of depression and/or anxiety. This study will also aim to understand ease of recruitment and protocol adherence in this cohort.MethodsThis is a single-centered, partially randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind feasibility trial. One hundred pregnant women with a history of depression and/or anxiety/PDA will be recruited and randomized into one of four arms, which could include the following: receiving a daily dose of both investigational products and dietary counseling on increasing dietary fiber, receiving a daily dose of both investigational drugs only, receiving fish oil investigational product and placebo, and a control arm with no intervention. The study involves six study visits, all of which can be conducted virtually every 3 months from the time of enrollment. At all study visits, information on diet, mental health, physical activity, and sleep quality will be collected. Additionally, all participants will provide a stool sample at each visit.DiscussionIt is anticipated that pregnant women with a history of depression and anxiety will be particularly interested in partaking in this trial, resulting in favorable recruitment rates. Given the positive findings of omega-3 fatty acids (O3FAs) and probiotic supplements on mental health symptoms in nonpregnant adults, we expect a similar trend in PDA symptoms, with a low likelihood of adverse events. This study will build the foundation for larger powered studies to further contribute evidence for the efficacy of this potential preventative treatment option.Trial registrationThis trial was registered at ClinicalTrials/gov on October 6, 2023; NCT06074250. BackgroundDisability progression is a key milestone in the disease evolution of people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Prediction models of the probability of disability progression have not yet reached the level of trust needed to be adopted in the clinic. A common benchmark to assess model development in multiple sclerosis is also currently lacking.MethodsData of adult PwMS with a follow-up of at least three years from 146 MS centers, spread over 40 countries and collected by the MSBase consortium was used. With basic inclusion criteria for quality requirements, it represents a total of 15, 240 PwMS. External validation was performed and repeated five times to assess the significance of the results. Transparent Reporting for Individual Prognosis Or Diagnosis (TRIPOD) guidelines were followed. Confirmed disability progression after two years was predicted, with a confirmation window of six months. Only routinely collected variables were used such as the expanded disability status scale, treatment, relapse information, and MS course. To learn the probability of disability progression, state-of-the-art machine learning models were investigated. The discrimination performance of the models is evaluated with the area under the receiver operator curve (ROC-AUC) and under the precision recall curve (AUC-PR), and their calibration via the Brier score and the expected calibration error. All our preprocessing and model code are available at https://gitlab.com/edebrouwer/ms_benchmark, making this task an ideal benchmark for predicting disability progression in MS.FindingsMachine learning models achieved a ROC-AUC of 0⋅71 ± 0⋅01, an AUC-PR of 0⋅26 ± 0⋅02, a Brier score of 0⋅1 ± 0⋅01 and an expected calibration error of 0⋅07 ± 0⋅04. The history of disability progression was identified as being more predictive for future disability progression than the treatment or relapses history.ConclusionsGood discrimination and calibration performance on an external validation set is achieved, using only routinely collected variables. This suggests machine-learning models can reliably inform clinicians about the future occurrence of progression and are mature for a clinical impact study.

Abstract Laser plasma-based accelerators provide an excellent source of collimated, bright, and adequately coherent betatron-type x-ray pulses with potential applications in science and industry. So far the laser plasma-based betatron radiation has been described within the concept of classical Liénard–Wiechert potentials incorporated in particle-in-cell simulations, a computing power-demanding approach, especially for the case of multi-petawatt lasers. In this work, we describe the laser plasma-based generation of betatron radiation at the most fundamental level of quantum mechanics. In our approach, photon emission from the relativistic electrons in the plasma bubble is described within a nonlinear quantum electrodynamics (QED) framework. The reported QED-based betatron radiation results are in excellent agreement with similar results using Liénard–Wiechert potentials, as well as in very good agreement with betatron radiation measurements, obtained with multi-10-TW lasers interacting with He and multielectron N $$_2$$ 2 gas targets. Furthermore, our QED approach results in a dramatic reduction of the computational runtime demands, making it a favorable tool for designing betatron radiation experiments, especially in multi-petawatt laser facilities.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative and inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that leads to a loss of myelin. There are three main types of MS: relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and primary and secondary progressive disease (PPMS, SPMS). The differentiation in the pathogenesis of these two latter courses is still unclear. The underlying mechanisms of MS are yet to be elucidated, and the treatment relies on immune-modifying agents. Recently, lipidomics and metabolomics studies using human biofluids, mainly plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), have suggested an important role of lipids and metabolites in the pathophysiology of MS. In this review, the results from studies on metabolomics and lipidomics analyses performed on biological samples of MS patients and MS-like animal models are presented and analyzed. Based on the collected findings, the biochemical pathways in human and animal cohorts involved were investigated and biological mechanisms and the potential role they have in MS are discussed. Limitations and challenges of metabolomics and lipidomics approaches are presented while concluding that metabolomics and lipidomics may provide a more holistic approach and provide biomarkers for early diagnosis of MS disease.
