Abstract

The Kuiper Belt is a distant region of the Solar System. On 1 January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew close to (486958) 2014 MU69, a Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Object, a class of objects that have never been heated by the Sun and are therefore well preserved since their formation. Here we describe initial results from these encounter observations. MU69 is a bi-lobed contact binary with a flattened shape, discrete geological units, and noticeable albedo heterogeneity. However, there is little surface color and compositional heterogeneity. No evidence for satellites, ring or dust structures, gas coma, or solar wind interactions was detected. 3. Adjustable Cortical Fixation Repair Is a Safe and Effective Technique for Quadriceps Tendon Rupture

Abstract

Purpose: To report the clinical outcomes of quadriceps tendon repair using adjustable cortical fixation devices at a minimum 2-year follow-up. Methods: A retrospective chart review identified patients who underwent quadriceps tendon repair using adjustable cortical fixation devices between January 2017 and March 2020. Patients with a partial tendon rupture were excluded. Demographic and injury-specific variables were gathered preoperatively and postoperatively from the electronic medical record and patient-reported outcomes (Lysholm Knee Questionnaire, Lower Extremity Functional Scale, and SF-12) were collected via telephone at a minimum of 2 years postoperatively. Results: Fourteen quadriceps tendon repairs were included in a total of 13 patients. The average time to follow-up was 3.5 ± 1.2 years with a range of 1.9 to 5.7 years. The mean age of this cohort was 55.7 ± 11.6 years, and the mean body mass index was 32.9 ± 6.0. Ten injuries (71.4%) were sustained by mechanical fall, 2 patients (14.3%) suffered a direct blow to the knee, and 2 patients (14.3%) reported a noncontact injury mechanism. Thirteen quadriceps ruptures (13/14, 92.9%) underwent surgery within 10 days of their injury. One knee (7.1%) had a postoperative extensor lag of 5°, whereas another knee (7.1%) required a reoperation for manipulation under anesthesia and arthroscopic lysis of adhesions at 3 months’ postoperatively. None of the included patients (0.0%) developed a tendon re-rupture, venous thromboembolism, delayed wound healing, surgical-site infection, neuropraxia or nerve injury, hardware irritation, patella fracture, or heterotopic ossification. Conclusions: In this study, adjustable cortical fixation was a safe and effective surgical technique for quadriceps tendon repair, with adequate restoration of quadriceps function and a low rate of adverse events at 2 years postoperatively. Level of Evidence: Level IV, therapeutic case series.

Abstract

The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. 13. Coping as a Predictor of Burnout and General Health in Therapists Working in ABA Schools

Abstract

Background: Little is known about the work-related well-being of applied behaviour analysis (ABA) therapists who work in school-based contexts and deliver ABA interventions to children with autism. Methods: A questionnaire on work-related stress (burnout), general distress, perceived supervisor support and coping was completed by 45 ABA therapists across six schools in the UK. Results: Around 42% of ABA therapists reported low levels of personal accomplishment at work, 13% reported high levels of emotional exhaustion and 40% met criteria for experiencing high levels of general distress. Wishful thinking coping was predictive of higher emotional exhaustion burnout and depersonalisation, and lower personal accomplishment. Conclusions: Given that a wishful thinking approach to coping may contribute to experiencing stress at work, it is important to consider support interventions for ABA therapists that may enhance their well-being. Mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies in particular may be relevant to the support of ABA therapist well-being.

17. A National UK Census of Applied Behavior Analysis School Provision for Children with Autism

Abstract

Over more than a decade, specialist Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) schools or classes for children with autism have developed in the UK and Ireland. However, very little is known internationally about how ABA is defined in practice in school settings, the characteristics of children supported in ABA school settings, and the staffing structures used. To answer these questions, the focus of the present research was a nationwide census of ABA schools throughout the UK. As far as it was possible to ascertain, we achieved a 100% return rate. There were 14 ABA schools and classes throughout the UK, supporting 258 children with autism, and employing 382 staff that supported ABA teaching. The mean ratio for ABA staff to children was 1.4 staff members: 1 child (range 0.7:1-2:1). The majority of all staff members were graduates or had a higher academic qualification (67.7%). This census methodology, if repeated, may help to identify future trends and can provide a baseline for developments in ABA schools/classes in the UK. (Contains 6 tables and 1 figure.)

18. Psychological Well-Being in Parents of Children with Angelman, Cornelia de Lange and Cri du Chat Syndromes

Abstract

Background: The current study focuses on mothers and fathers of children with three rare genetic syndromes that are relatively unexplored in terms of family experience: Angelman syndrome, Cornelia de Lange syndrome and Cri du Chat syndrome. Method: Parents of children with Angelman syndrome (n = 15), Cornelia de Lange syndrome (n = 16) and Cri du Chat syndrome (n = 18), and a matched comparison group of parents of children with autism and intellectual disabilities (n = 20) completed questionnaires on both psychological distress (stress, anxiety, depression) and positive psychological functioning. Results: Parents of children with Angelman syndrome consistently reported the highest levels of psychological distress, and parents of children with Cornelia de Lange syndrome the lowest, with parents of children with Cri du Chat syndrome and autism scoring between these two. Positive psychological functioning was similar across the four aetiology groups. Conclusions: Parents of children with rare genetic syndromes are at risk for high levels of stress and mental health problems. Methodological issues and the practical applications of these results are discussed.

Abstract

The development of treatment strategies for periodontitis that maximise the effectiveness of antibiotics is highly desirable. Azithromycin is proving to be an effective antibiotic for treatment of refractory periodontitis which works by binding to the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria and subsequently inhibits protein synthesis. Lactoferrin is a membrane-active host antimicrobial protein and so the objective of this study was to determine whether the effect of azithromycin (AZM) against example periodontopathogens (Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia) could be potentiated by lactoferrin. Two strains of P. gingivalis and T. forsythia were exposed to lactoferrin (LF; up to 10 mg/ml) and AZM (up to 5 µg/ml) for 0 – 72 h. The MICs for AZM were established using E-Test strips and by agar diffusion. Susceptibility to LF and LF + AZM was evaluated using diffusion assays, with and without iron depletion. The range of MIC values of AZM for P. gingivalis strains and T. forsythia was 0.16 - 0.63 µg/ml and 0.50 - 0.63 µg/ml, respectively. However, no inhibition was observed with iron saturated lactoferrin at any concentration or under iron depletion conditions nor was any effect observed on the AZM MIC by its presence. P. gingivalis and T. forsythia were inhibited by AZM but were not affected by Lf and there was no synergism between AZM and Lf.

45. AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL WATCHING BRIEF AT 66 HIGH STREET, WITNEY, OXFORDSHIRE, OX28 6HJ

Abstract

John Moore Heritage Services carried out an archaeological watching brief to the rear of 66 High Street, Witney, Oxfordshire (NGR SP 35734 09991). The watching brief comprised the footings, two footings pads, and service trenches, in which a series of features and deposits relating to the medieval and post-medieval occupation of Witney were recorded. Archaeological investigation to the rear of 66 High Street, Witney, revealed activity relating to its medieval and post-medieval occupation, through to the modern use of the site. The medieval and post-medieval activity at the site consisted of occupation layer (14)/(35)/(39); wall 03; pit 26; pit 23/30; and cultivation soil (02)/(34)/(36)/(44)/(47). The site is located within the medieval borough of Witney, so these deposits and features relate to the historic occupation and use of the dwellings built along the High Street. The borough of Witney is traditionally thought to have been established between the late 12th to early 13th centuries; however recent watching briefs on Witney High Street have revealed evidence of 11th and 12th century occupation (e.g. JMHS 2012; JMHS 2015), including the jar rim sherd recovered from occupation layer (39) of this watching brief, which dates to the mid-11th century. The dwellings on either side of the development plot are both Grade II Listed Buildings; 64 and 68 High Street were constructed in the late 16th- and late 17th - early 18th century respectively, with later additions to both properties throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The outbuilding 20m south-southeast of 66 High Street is also a Grade II Listed Building, formerly a blanket-making workshop and warehouse constructed in the mid to late 18th century. Similarly, 66 High Street was constructed in the 17th century. The stratigraphic position of wall 03 below the extant foundations of 66 High Street suggests that wall 03 pre-dates the 17th century. Wall 03 may have been constructed to demarcate a boundary between two plots, associated with the development of the dwellings lining the High Street during the medieval and post-medieval periods. The orientation of wall 03 appears to have the same alignment as the extant buildings and walls of the properties on either side of the development area, indicating that the land organisation was similar during the earlier periods. As this feature extended beyond the limit of excavation, its true dimensions and function could not be determined. However, due to the similarity of the later deposits on either side of wall 03, it is likely that the use of the areas on either side were of a similar nature. Though pits 23/30 and 26 provided no dateable material, it is likely that they both relate to late medieval or post-medieval activity at the site. Pit 23/30 cuts earlier 16thcentury deposit (14), and the upper fill of pit 23/30 is overlain by post-medieval cultivation layer (02). Stratigraphically, it can be seen that pit 26 is contemporary or earlier than deposit (14); it is likely that the single fill of pit 26 is contemporary with the formation of occupation layer (14) as the deposits are so similar. The occupation and use of the site throughout these periods can also be evidenced by the material assemblage recovered: domestic wares; building materials; and evidence of animal butchery and disarticulation all demonstrate the domestic use of the site. Pit 19 is post-medieval to modern in date, as it cuts through cultivation layer (02), though its exact date could not be determined at it did not produce any dateable material. The construction date of well 10 is unknown, though as it cuts through occupation layer (14) and cultivation layer (02), it must have been constructed during the postmedieval period or later, and probably relates to the continued occupation of the site. A well had not been previously recorded at the site, as the extant modern buildings overlaid it.

Abstract

Global targets for area-based conservation and management must move beyond threshold-based targets alone and must account for the quality of such areas. In the Southern Ocean around Antarctica, a region where key biodiversity faces unprecedented risks from climate change and where there is a growing demand to extract resources, a number of marine areas have been afforded enhanced conservation or management measures through two adopted marine protected areas (MPAs). However, evidence suggests that additional high quality areas could benefit from a proposed network of MPAs. Penguins offer a particular opportunity to identify high quality areas because these birds, as highly visible central-place foragers, are considered indicator species whose populations reflect the state of the surrounding marine environment. We compiled a comprehensive dataset of the location of penguin colonies and their associated abundance estimates in Antarctica. We then estimated the at-sea distribution of birds based on information derived from tracking data and through the application of a modified foraging radius approach with a density decay function to identify some of the most important marine areas for chick-rearing adult penguins throughout waters surrounding Antarctica following the Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) framework. Additionally, we assessed how marine IBAs overlapped with the currently adopted and proposed network of key management areas (primarily MPAs), and how the krill fishery likely overlapped with marine IBAs over the past five decades. We identified 63 marine IBAs throughout Antarctic waters and found that were the proposed MPAs to be adopted, the permanent conservation of high quality areas for penguin species would increase by between 49 and 100% depending on the species. Abstract

Price transmission through global–domestic agricultural supply chains is a fundamental indicator of domestic market efficiency and producer welfare. Conventional price-transmission econometrics test for a theory-based spatial-arbitrage restriction that long-run equilibrium prices in spatially distinct markets differ by no more than transaction costs. The conventional approach is ill-equipped to test for price transmission when endogenously unstable markets do not equilibrate due to systematic arbitrage-frustrating frictions including financial and institutional transaction costs and biophysical constraints. We propose a novel empirical framework using price data to test for market stability and price transmission along international-domestic supply chains incorporating nonlinear time series analysis and recently emerging causal-detection methods from empirical nonlinear dynamics. We apply the framework to map-out and quantify price transmission through the global-exporter–processor–producer coffee supply chain in Papua, New Guinea. We find empirical evidence of upstream price transmission from the global market to domestic exporters and processors, but not through to producers.

49. Current issues in the farm sector of the tea industry in Sri Lanka

Abstract

Sri Lanka is a leading tea producer and exporter. The contribution of the tea industry to the country’s GDP, foreign exchange earnings and employment is sizable. However, its’ international competitiveness and domestic growth are threatened presently because of strong competition from emerging tea producers and exporters, and performance-related factors in the value chain and in the farm sector. Pressing issues in the farm sector are related to labour availability, high production costs, restrictive government policies, climate change and a lack of entrepreneurial tendencies. They relate to both private and estate growers and they have led to serious adverse consequences for production in the sector. Farm-level decision-making in the green leaf production sector as a response to the emerging issues shows a reluctance by both smallholders and estate managers/company management to reinvest in their tea cultivations. This is more common in the estate sector, where reinvestment in essential field activities that are capital and labour-intensive, such as in-filling, replanting and new planting, are not done or are delayed. The same fate happens to other investment projects such as soil conservation, rehabilitation, and infrastructure development that directly and indirectly affect productivity. Accordingly, areas under cultivation are decreasing, and production is declining.
