Students in higher professionals education are prepared for high level professional practice. To be able to fulfill their future roles, their educational programmes provide them interaction with professional knowledge, theoretical knowledge and professional practice. These types of interactions are presumed to aid students in their transformation from high school student to a professional in a complex society. However, it still is unknown how the different types of knowledge interact in the transformation of students to professionals through higher professional education, as well as the prerogatives for this interaction. This longitudinal study will follow 4x25 students of four different applied disciplines during their four years of undergraduate education to better understand this role of knowledge. In a mixed-methods design the interaction between the development of their professional identity, professional knowledge-base and notions of just professional action will be investigated. This poster presents an overview of the research design.

In juni 2019 heeft de Vereniging Hogescholen (VH) de standaard voor masteropleidingen in het hbo geactualiseerd. Het hoger beroepsonderwijs beschikt hiermee over een up-to-date, gemeenschappelijk document, dat de kern van masteropleidingen binnen een hogeschool schetst.

Higher education institutions are more and more attempting to connect research to teaching. One way of enhancing this connection is within the work of academics. Currently it is unknown if research and teaching are connected in the work of academics and if this relationship differs between new and old universities. Due to the fading boundaries between new and old universities within binary educational systems, comparing both settings becomes relevant. This research considers the relation between research and teaching in the work of academics by analysing tasks and competencies within job openings of new (N=126) and old (N=246) universities within the Netherlands. Data reduction was done in Atlas.ti8 using coding schemes. Hereafter, a quantitative analysis was applied, containing a descriptive and a correlation analysis. The findings show a negative relation between teaching and research-related tasks and competencies in job openings of new universities, while this relationship is sometimes positive, and sometimes negative in job openings of old universities. These findings yield a discussion about the professional profiles of teachers and researchers appropriate to enhance the connection between teaching and research within new and old universities.

In today’s era of content abundance, education has to deal with changed practices for the dissemination of knowledge. Many digital resources are available, and they have the potential to take the place of textbooks. ‘The role of the classic textbook as the key, immutable reference point for any class subject, is rapidly fading’, says Good (2016). Educational publishers like Pearson see a decline in textbook use (Sweney, 2017), and a study at a Dutch university of applied sciences (Leighton, 2015) indicates that lecturers in higher education move away from core textbooks towards a variety of materials, including powerpoint slides, websites, and videos. Baron & Zablot (2015) complement this, saying ‘teachers now have the possibility to create and modify resources’. This development carries the risk that the structure, continuity and coherence textbooks are supposed to provide (Littlejohn, 2011), disappear. One could argue that when structure and coherence disappear from learning materials, the quality of education is at risk. To make the most of (digital) materials that teachers select, they must be organized well (Deschaine & Sharma, 2015). In order to do that, lecturers will have to act as skilled curators when selecting and structuring learning materials. Central in the concept of curation is that it goes beyond selection: providing coherence and context is what sets out curation from mere selection (Bhaskar, 2016). Considered from the perspective of teaching, curating means selecting and structuring learning content for students, while also providing them with context and coherence. The notion of lecturers as curators has been discussed by Siemens (2008), who describes the changing roles of lecturers and identifies ‘curational educators’ as those who ‘acknowledge the autonomy of learners, yet understand the frustration of exploring unknown territories without a map’. So far, the literature mainly focusses on providing students with curational skills, since these are important 21st century and media literacy skills (e.g. Jenkins et al., 2009; Potter, 2012). Little empirical research has been done when it comes to curational roles of lecturers. This proposed poster provides a mixed-methods research design for a PhD study.

The current assignment of vocational programs in higher education is to educate future evidence-based professionals. Often is presumed that a substantial connection between research and teaching is needed to be able to provide the right context and content to achieve this aim with students (Healey & Jenkins, 2015). As an effect in the Dutch institutes for higher professional education there is an increased attention for the connection between research and teaching as a carrier to develop these knowledge related competences. But what does it mean for an institute of higher vocational education to actively strategize towards integrating research and teaching in all bachelor and master programs for 45.000 students, while still standing in the tradition of being teaching-only? This paper presents the three phases of a large scale institutional change in Amsterdam UAS, including a systematic analysis of ‘research’ in the profiles of all 70 vocational bachelor programs.

Op de Hogeschool Rotterdam neemt, zoals in het hele hoger beroepsonderwijs, het doen van praktijkgericht onderzoek een steeds belangrijker plaats in. De ambities zijn stevig: via praktijkgericht onderzoek een bijdrage leveren aan zowel de professionele ontwikkeling van het werkveld in Rotterdam als aan de verdere verbetering van de opleidingen. In het kader van deze ambitie is de pilot van het professionaliseringsprogramma ‘Research on the Job’ uitgevoerd. De intentie van dit programma is dat docenten zich professionaliseren op onderzoeksvaardigheden door het direct zelf uitvoeren van onderzoek in de beroepspraktijk. Onderzoekers van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam hebben dit programma geëvalueerd, met de focus op de ervaring van de deelnemende docenten. De resultaten van deze mixed-methods studie laten zien dat de motivatie van de docenten om deel te nemen aan het programma is om onderzoeksvaardigheden te ontwikkelen, maar ook om meer te weten over de praktijk van de opdrachtgever, en (tijdelijk) andere werkzaamheden te hebben. De docenten geven aan zich te hebben ontwikkeld als onderzoeker, beter zicht te hebben op het onderzoeksproces, en een groter belang te hechten aan het doen van onderzoek. Ze zien echter geen verandering in hun functioneren als docent.

De opvattingen van docenten over ‘goed onderzoek’ spelen een belangrijke rol bij de dagelijkse vormgeving van de hogeschool en universiteit. En wanneer docenten ook werken als onderzoekers, beïnvloeden ze ook in die context wat beschouwd wordt als ‘goed onderzoek’. Eerder onderzoek richtte zich óf op opvattingen van docenten over onderzoek, óf op criteria voor goed onderzoek. In een focusgroep- en interview studie exploreert deze studie de combinatie door de opvattingen over ‘goed onderzoek’ van docenten te onderzoeken. Het gaat hierbij om docenten uit hogescholen en docenten uit universiteiten. De resultaten laten zien dat de opvattingen van docenten in beide type instellingen te beschrijven zijn in zes thema’s over ‘goed onderzoek’. De verschillen tussen docenten in hogeschool en universiteit blijken beperkt. De gecombineerde opvattingen van beide groepen geven een meer volledig overzicht van hoe docenten in het Nederlandse hoger onderwijs redeneren over ‘goed onderzoek’. Dit totaalbeeld kan de basis vormen voor context-specifieke debatten over de implementatie van onderzoek in het curriculum, de toetsing van onderzoek in het onderwijs, en in vervolgstudies naar onderzoeksopvattingen van docenten.

In het hoger beroepsonderwijs is onderzoek van toenemend belang. Van docenten wordt verwacht dat zij toegerust zijn onderzoek over te brengen aan studenten. Docenten op hogescholen worden daarom gestimuleerd tot het volgen van een masteropleiding en verschillende hogescholen bieden professionaliseringsactiviteiten aan over onderzoek. Tot zover de wensen van de hogescholen. Maar wat willen de hogeschooldocenten eigenlijk zelf als het gaat om professionalisering op onderzoek? Middels interviews wordt in deze inventarisatie de wens van docenten (N=15) verkend om zich te professionaliseren in onderzoek. De resultaten laten zien dat zowel extrinsieke als intrinsieke motivatie bij de docenten een rol speelt. Voor docenten met een voornamelijk extrinsieke motivatie blijkt de visie van de hogeschool op onderzoek in het onderwijs erg belangrijk om tot deelname aan professionaliseringsactiviteiten over te gaan. De intrinsieke motivaties van de docenten zijn soms gericht op het willen versterken van de docentrol, soms op versterken van de onderzoekersrol. In alle gevallen lijkt tijd de belangrijkste randvoorwaarde om tot professionalisering te komen. De resultaten bieden een eerste richting voor zowel de vormgeving van professionalisering als vervolgonderzoek.

This article explores the criteria for ‘good research’ employed by lecturers in traditional universities and institutes of higher professional education. The implementation of research-related activities in the latter created a repositioning of both types of Dutch institutions, similar as in many European higher education systems. The higher education institutes state their mutual difference is based on different types of research and research education, being more fundamental (or ‘Mode 1’) versus being more applied (or ‘Mode 2’). Lecturers’ criteria for ‘good research’ potentially have a considerable influence on the research character in different higher educational types, both in education and research. Hence, this study assumes that the presumed institutional differences can be seen in their lecturers’ criteria for ‘good’ research. In a focus group and interview study, participants were asked to elaborate on personal examples of ‘good’ and ‘nongood’ research. A thematic analysis resulted in six themes on ‘good research’. The differences between both groups of lecturers found are related to the value of the research, and do not reach the core of research quality. This shows how the policy intent to steer on institutional differences actually is successful, but also limited. Implications are discussed.

In dit themanummer komt een aantal artikelen aan de orde over de integratie van onderzoek in het hbo-onderwijsprogramma. Deze inleiding schetst een kader van internationale ontwikkelingen waarin deze hbo-artikelen kunnen worden geplaatst. In de eerste paragraaf wordt de ontwikkeling van het hbo van een onderwijs- naar een kennisinstelling geplaatst in een internationale trend waarin instellingen van hoger onderwijs wordt gevraagd onderzoek nauwer te relateren met onderwijs. Het gaat ons hierbij om vormgeving, implementatie en evaluatie van onderwijs voor de hbo-studenten, de aankomende professionals, die de competenties voor onderzoek moeten gaan verwerven en toepassen. Deze onderwerpen vallen internationaal onder de noemer van ‘teaching-research nexus’, waarvan in de tweede paragraaf een historische karakteristiek wordt gegeven. In de derde paragraaf wordt, gegeven de focus van onderwijsvormgeving, -implementatie, en -evaluatie, de internationale literatuur over ‘teaching-research nexus’ geordend aan de hand van doelen en doelgroep, vormgeving, en leereffecten van onderzoeksonderwijs. Bij de vormgeving van het onderzoeksonderwijs komen in het bijzonder de volgende onderwerpen aan de orde: het individueel en organisatieniveau, curriculumvormgeving en -implementatie gegeven de visie op onderzoek en onderwijs, ‘scholarship’ van de docent in relatie tot het leren van studenten, en de rol van de discipline. Ten slotte worden in de vierde paragraaf de verschillende artikelen van dit themanummer geplaatst in het geschetste internationale kader.

With the introduction of research activities in higher professional education in the Dutch higher education system, the notions of ‘research’ that were previously silently agreed upon among academics in traditional universities also came under pressure. Additionally, both types of higher education actively claim to have educational programs of a different character. The ground underneath the difference is claimed to be the presence of distinct research activities. This study considers this difference through the discourse on ‘research’ of lecturers in both higher professional education and university education. In interviews, lecturers were asked to judge an argument on their own work-related activities to be ‘research’ or ‘nonresearch’. Through a network-analysis approach, the data results in five discursive building blocks that all lecturers apply in their arguments, and three discursive themes on research. Furthermore, this research indicates that differences among lecturers on discursive themes are only partly based on institutional differences.
