31. Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles: Achieving the superparamagnetic limit by chemical reduction.

Abstract

An unanticipated superparamagnetic response has been observed in cobalt ferrite materials after thermal treatment under inert atmosphere. Cobalt ferrite particles were prepared via normal micelle precipitation that typically yields CoxFe3-xO4 nanoparticles (x=0.6-1.0). While samples thermally treated under oxygen show majority spinel phase formation, annealing in nitrogen gas yields materials consisting of Co-Fe alloy, FeS, and CoFe2O4 spinel. After thermal treatment, thermomagnetic studies reveal composition-insensitive, but highly treatment-sensitive, saturation magnetization, coercivity, blocking temperature, and Verwey transition temperature dependence. Extremely high saturation magnetization (159 emu/g) with low coercivity (31 Oe) was observed for one of the treated compositions, which drastically deviates from prototypical cobalt ferrite with large magnetocrystalline anisotropy. We attribute such unique magnetic response to Co-Fe alloy coexisting with FeS and CoFe2O4 spinel where the diameter of the metallic phase is below the superparamagnetic limit. While thermal treatment in nitrogen was not anticipated to yield Co-Fe alloy, chemisorbed surfactant molecules (i.e., sodium dodecylsulfate) are postulated to act as reducing agents in the present scenario. Abstract

As part of the preparation of the PS as an injector for the LHC, a prototype 20 MHz rf system has been used, to demonstrate that the nominal longitudinal performance of the proton beam for LHC can be obtained using multiple bunch-splittings. Based on these successful results obtained during 2000, the development of the operational rf system began in 2001. To allow the preparation of bunch trains with a bunch spacing of 25 or 75 ns, this system must operate either at 20 or 13.3 MHz respectively. Two new ferrite cavities and their associated amplifiers have been designed and built. Each one can provide a maximum voltage of 20 kV peak during 200 ms with a 10% duty cycle. The cavities are equipped with fast (~20 ms) gap shorting relays, and rf feedback reduces their Q below 10 at both frequencies. A single system is sufficient to generate the nominal beam for LHC. The second one will then be both a "hot spare" and a very valuable performance enhancement providing the possibility of handling a larger than nominal emittance or generating bunch trains with different spacings in the same PS supercycle. The design and the results measured on the final device are described and discussed.

Abstract

The LHC [1] will be supplied, via the SPS, with protons from the pre-injector chain comprising Linac2, PS Booster (PSB) and PS. These accelerators have under-gone a major upgrading programme [2] during the last five years so as to meet the stringent requirements of the LHC. These imply that many high-intensity bunches of small emittance and tight spacing (25 ns) be available at the PS extraction energy (25 GeV). The upgrading project involved an increase of Linac2 current, new RF systems in the PSB and the PS, raising the PSB energy from 1 to 1.4 GeV, two-batch filling of the PS and the installation of high-resolution beam profile measurement devices. With the project entering its final phase and most of the newly installed hardware now being operational, the emphasis switches to producing the nominal LHC beam and tackling the associated beam physics problems. While a beam with transverse characteristics better than nominal has been obtained, the longitudinal density still needs to be increased. An alternative scheme to produce the 25 ns bunch spacing is outlined, together with other promising developments.

Abstract

As part of the preparation of the PS as injector for LHC, two new 80 MHz cavities have been designed and built at CERN. Bunches spaced by 25 ns and less than 4 ns long are required at injection into t he SPS. The bunch spacing is obtained with a 40 MHz system installed in the PS in 1996, but the nominal small bunch length will only be obtained with the 80 MHz systems producing a total of 600 kV. Th ese systems also have the capability to accelerate leptons in the PS, providing a total of 400 kV with high duty cycle (25 %). The mechanical design is similar to that of the 40 MHz cavity with many c ommon parts, but cooling water circuits had to be added. The cavity is equipped with an efficient, pneumatically operated, coaxial short-circuit. The power coupling loop has the form of a wide strip t o minimize the ratio of self to mutual inductance. It has a DC insulation permitting multipactor suppression by a bias voltage. The final amplifier is mounted directly onto the cavity. A fast RF feedb ack with a loop gain of 44 dB reduces the Q to about 100. Higher-order-mode dampers designed and built at TRIUMF have been installed.

Abstract

Over the past few years diffusion-controlled systems have been shown to share a common set of interfacial morphologies. The singular nature of the microscopic dynamics of surface tension and kinetic growth far from equilibrium are critical to morphology selection, with special importance attributed to the anisotropy of these effects. The morphologies which develop can be organized via a morphology diagram according to the driving force and the effective anisotropy. We focus on the properties of the dense-branching morphology (DBM) which appears for sufficiently weak effective anisotropy, and the nature of morphology transitions between the DBM and dendritic growth stabilized by either surface tension or kinetic effects. The DBM is studied in the Hele-Shaw cell, and its structure analyzed by linear stability analysis. A comparison is made between the power spectrum of the structure and the stability analysis. We then provide a detailed account of the morphology diagram and morphology transitions in an anisotropic Hele-Shaw cell. Theoretically the question of morphology transitions is addressed within the boundary-layer model by computing selected velocities as a function of the undercooling for different values of the surface tension and the kinetic term. We argue that the fastest growing morphology is selected whether it is the DBM, surface tension dendrites, or kinetic dendrites. A comparison is made with our experimental results in electrochemical deposition for the correspondence between growth velocities and morphology transitions.
