Microplastic particles (MPs) are widely distributed pollutants in the environment. While a growing number of studies have shown that MPs are toxic to plant and animal life, systemic efforts to reduce their presence have been scarce. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polystyrene (PS) are one of the most common among all plastic-forming MPs. In this study, pure bacterial strains, Bacillus licheniformis and Lysinibacillus massiliensis, and a mixed bacterial culture of Delftia acidovorans and Bacillus sp., were used for biodegradation of LDPE and PS microplastics. Biodegradation of MP-PS and MP-LDPE of particle size 300 - 500 µm was carried out under batch operating conditions at a temperature of 25 ± 2 °C, pH values of 7.15, and 160 rpm during 22 days. The obtained results showed that mixed bacterial cultures degraded MP-LDPE and MP-PS better than pure bacterial cultures, and the biodegradation efficiency was higher for MPLDPE than for MP-PS, as indicated by greater reduction in peak intensity and spectral deformation, higher colony forming unit (CFU), and inorganic carbon (IC) values. Humic acid (HA) impairs water quality due to its reactivity with many substances present in water. During the drinking-water treatment process and water distribution via water supply system, HA present in water may react with chlorine and other disinfects producing harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs), which are categorized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in groups 2A (probably carcinogenic to humans) or 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans). Several studies have investigated and reported increased HA removal by iron-coated sorbents. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the removal of HA from water by two commercially available bituminous coal-based activated carbons (ACs), Cullar D (Cm) and Hydraffin 30N (Hm). Prior to testing the chosen adsorbents were chemically modified according to two protocols: (1) oxidation by acid mixture (m1), and (2) oxidation with acid mixture followed by iron-ions impregnation (m2). The batch adsorption tests were used to test their efficiency in HA removal under various values of process parameters (initial HA concentration, pH, contact time, adsorbent mass, and temperature). The results showed that up to 96 % of HA removal can be obtained by Cullar D modification Cm1, while maximum uptake of HA by Hydraffin 30N modification was achieved with Hm1 (62.1 %). After surface saturation with Fe3+ -ions (m2), both activated carbons showed similar and lower performances in HA removal (Cm2 up to 66.5 %, and Hm2 up to 50.3 %). This review has four major objectives: I) to present the problem of phthalate pollution, II) to highlight common techniques for quantification of phthalate compounds in water, III) to summarize current trends in determination of phthalates toxicity and point out the major adverse effects, and IV) to discuss and critically compare modern approaches in purification of phthalate-polluted water samples and thus reveal the further perspectives. Phthalates are organic compounds that are used extensively as additives in plastics and personal care products. They have high leaching potential and, therefore, they have been detected in various environments, including aquatic environments. Concentrations of phthalates in water are generally low, so their determination usually requires preconcentration. However, phthalates are compounds with very high hazardous potential. Related toxicity studies have been focused mainly on long-term exposures, and the results have shown that phthalates mainly affect the endocrine and reproductive systems. Therefore, phthalates have become a global concern. Their removal from the environment not only ensures environmental protection, but the protection of human health as well. Among various presented approaches for phthalates removal, anaerobic biodegradation has shown the highest potential for further developments because it is a promising technology for using wastewater as a source of green energy. Olive pomace is a residue substance in the food industry. It is not considered a hazardous waste or even a waste in general. This is potentially problematic because olive pomace contains certain compounds that can have a negative impact on the ecosystem, especially on aquatic organisms and plants. In case of inappropriate disposal, these toxic compounds may be leached into the soil and groundwater. This topic attracts additional interest due to the potential of olive pomace. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is a synthetic, non-degradable polymer most commonly used as a food packaging material; however, its non-degradability has an adverse effect on the environment. The development and use of biodegradable polymeric materials or plastics as packaging materials for food packaging has significantly increased. Biopolymers present one of the best alternatives for development of environmentally friendly packaging materials in the food industry due to their biodegradability. The aim of this study was to prepare biocomposites of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), rice husk (RH) and micro titanium dioxide (mTiO2) as a filler in order to obtain a biodegradable and antibacterial material suitable for use as a packaging material in the food industry. The biocomposites were prepared by melt mixing in laboratory Brabender mixer. Antibacterial effect of different mass fraction of mTiO2 (w = 0.5; 1.0; 1.5, and 2.0 %) on bacterial cultures of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis was investigated. The results showed that mTiO2 inhibited the growth of bacterial cultures of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis at the mTiO2 mass fraction of 1.5 and 2.0 % (the number of bacterial culture cells decreased). Air pollution is a global problem and is considered one of the most common non-allergen triggers of asthma. The impact of air pollution on the appearance of asthma, especially in children, is the subject of many scientific researches, especially in the eastern world due to the problem of pollution it is facing. There are different pollutants depending on the area of activity in which a person is exposed. Thus, contamination of outdoor air is characterized by the marked presence of ozone, O3, fine particles, PM2,5 to PM10 and sulphur dioxide, SO2, while indoor air with the presence of formaldehyde, CH2O, nitrogen dioxide, NO2, and volatile organic compounds, VOCs. Tobacco smoke is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide, and smoking has become a less desirable habit in many social segments. Therefore, during the last decade, the tobacco industry has developed some alternatives - ENDS and HNBT products, in order to offer a less harmful option for consumers. E-cigarette manufacturers are referred to the GRAS declaration which refers exclusively to ingestion, while the inhalation of the aerosol itself, which occurs in both of these products, is harmful. E-cigarettes create an aerosol by heating e-liquid, and HNBT devices are based on heating the coated tobacco leaves thus producing harmful compounds although at considerably lower concentrations than conventional cigarettes. Polyphenols, left in olive pomace, which is a by-product in the production of olive oil, are antioxidants that have a positive effect on human health. For the extraction of polyphenols, the use of natural deep eutectic solvents is increasingly encountered, characterised by non-toxicity, biodegradability, nonflammability, and low price. In this work, a natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) was prepared from three components: malic acid, D-fructose, and glycerol (MaFruGly) with different water contents that allow successful extraction of polyphenols. The optimal extraction method was determined. Following extraction, the microbial activity was tested and stability of the isolated polyphenols monitored. Research has shown that the most successful methods for polyphenol extraction are microwave ultrasound and ultrasonic probe extraction, and NADES with 30 % water has proven to be the optimal solvent for maintaining the stability of polyphenols. The aim of this work was biological treatment of agroindustrial waste (P1), biowaste (P2) and biodegradable municipal solid waste (P3) by the composting process in adiabatic reactor during 21 days. In experiments P1, P2, and P3, a maximum temperature of 52, 55, and 57 °C was reached, and the thermophilic phase lasted 8, 5, and 6 days. The cumulative evolved CO2 and NH3 was 122, 407, and 389 g kgVM0-1 and 89, 148, and 559 mg kgVM0-1, respectively. The pH value at the beginning of the process was in the neutral and at the end in the slightly alkaline domain. The substrate humidity increased by about 5 %, while the C/N ratio decreased due to a decrease in the organic C content and an increase in N content. Consequently, a conversion of 48 %, 71 %, and 56 %, respectively, was achieved in experiments P1, P2, and P3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main goal of this research was to determine the running dynamics in male 400m sprint event. This research was conducted on top male athletes who progressed into the finals of four World Championships in athletics: Stuttgart (1993), Athens (1997) Seville (1999) and Berlin (2009). The data for this study was taken from the list of official results and published biomechanical analysis. This research study included 15 variables; 14 of which were time parameters referring to split times at every 50m, at every 100m and at first and last 200m in 400m event, as well as final result, sprinters' age, height and weight. Obtained results were then used to determine basic statistical parameters as well as to determine individual changes in running dynamics of 400m race. Obtained results show miniscule differences in 400m running dynamics that impact better final placement considering the successfulness of movement structure patterns realization. The highly loaded olive mill wastes are characterized by low pH value, high electrical conductivity, and high content of sugar, phenols, and organic acids. In this work are shown the results pollutants removal from olive mill wastewater by adsorption and biosorption process on activated carbon and Aspergillus niger fungal pellets, as well as treatment of olive mill waste by composting process. The obtained results show that activated carbon removed 35 % organic matter and 47 % phenols, while fungal pellets removed 42 % organic matter, 57 % phenols, and 39 % colour.
