Abstract

This study emanates from the continued presence of institutional racism (Gillborn et al, 2016). It is specifically relevant to the cultural relevance of reading books, and fixes its gaze on the Biff, Chip and Kipper series, developed by the Oxford Reading Tree (ORT) reading scheme. By detailing a critical content analysis of a small sample of books within this reading scheme, this study highlights the importance of cultural relevance (Ladson-Billings, 1993). This is with special regard to the nurturing of children, who have historically and contemporarily not seen sufficient positive and normalising portrayals of themselves, in the media and in print. This study is conducted on the premise that such portrayals could lead to increased personal reconciliation and consequently, encourage unity in families, communities and nations. Critical Race Theory (CRT) informs the methodology used to conduct the analysis, which includes a high regard for the use of activist principles. This study therefore adds to the literature that uses CRT within education. The analysis revealed that the ORT books studied cannot claim cultural relevance, with regards to two out of the three identified tenets of LadsonBillings' definition of the term. These tenets are firstly, that children should be enabled to learn to be culturally competent especially with regards to their own identified culture; and secondly, that children should be taught how to challenge institutions that maintain unfair inequalities. Further research would need to be conducted in order to determine the outcome with regards to the third tenet, which is that children ought to achieve academic success. This study foregrounds an agentic approach to the issue of under or misrepresentation, and in so doing, proposes the continuation of the development of a literacy programme, which is being published using a strategic essentialist conception of black British cultural capital.

Abstract

The LOng-Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) is the high resolution imaging instrument for the New Horizons mission to Pluto, its giant satellite Charon, its small moons Nix and Hydra, and the Kuiper Belt, which is the vast region of icy bodies extending roughly from Neptune's orbit out to 50 astronomical units (AU). New Horizons launched on January 19, 2006 as the inaugural mission in NASA's New Frontiers program. LORRI is a narrow angle (field of view=0.29 deg), high resolution (4.95 microrad pixels), Ritchey-Chretien telescope with a 20.8 cm diameter primary mirror, a focal length of 263 cm, and a three lens field-flattening assembly. A 1024 x 1024 pixel (optically active region), thinned, backside-illuminated charge-coupled device (CCD) detector is used in the focal plane unit and is operated in frame transfer mode. LORRI provides panchromatic imaging over a bandpass that extends approximately from 350 nm to 850 nm. LORRI operates in an extreme thermal environment, situated inside the warm spacecraft with a large, open aperture viewing cold space. LORRI has a silicon carbide optical system, designed to maintain focus over the operating temperature range without a focus adjustment mechanism. Abstract

There is a growing global recognition that community development has the potential to enhance the socio-economic status of resource-constrained rural communities. Many countries have established commu­nity development initiatives in rural areas to reduce pov­erty and improve social investment. However, numer­ous challenges hinder the implementation of community development initiatives that contribute to poverty re­duction in most of Southern Africa. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 1, mandates all countries to end all forms of pov­erty by the year 2030. One approach to achieving this goal is to devise and implement sustainable community development initiatives. This review paper presents some best practices for how community development in­itiatives could reduce poverty in Southern Africa. The lit­erature collected from government reports, accredited journal articles, and other credible scientific writings from 2000 to 2022 was reviewed to triangulate sources of information and understand the state of community de­velopment initiatives. Several challenges were found to impede progress in poverty reduction and negatively impact sustainable community development. The effec­tiveness and sustainability of poverty reduction strate­gies implemented by countries in Southern Africa vary widely from country to country and within the country itself. The study provides recommendations and best practice models implemented within rural communities in Southern Africa.

10. No doctoral studies without hurdles: A review on pathways to prevent dropouts

Abstract

Traditionally, doctoral studies take at least three to six years of full-time study, depending on the country and institution. However, the number of doctoral students who complete their studies in the prescribed time does not meet the expectations of the scientific community. Many students who enrol in a doctoral programme either drop out or do not complete it within the expected time frame. The literature is replete with evidence of the challenges faced by early career researchers, but there is still little reported on how to bridge the existing and perceived barriers that continue to undermine doctoral study retention. These and other obstacles must be addressed and combated by questioning the root causes of students dropping out of their studies. Thus, this study sought to suggest pathways to overcome these and other obstacles by providing a coherent overview of what we need to do and how. The methodology used included a thorough review of international accredited peer reviewed articles extracted from the SCOPUS multidisciplinary database. A total of 24 articles relevant to the topic were thus selected. The key finding of this initiative is that doctoral students face wide-ranging financial, academic, and social challenges that need to be addressed innovatively to improve the timely realisation of the successful completion of their studies. To date, 18 living recommendations for the clinical care of pregnant and postpartum women with COVID-19 have been issued by the National COVID-19 Clinical Evidence Taskforce. This includes recommendations on mode of birth, delayed umbilical cord clamping, skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding, rooming-in, antenatal corticosteroids, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, disease-modifying treatments (including dexamethasone, remdesivir and hydroxychloroquine), venous thromboembolism prophylaxis and advanced respiratory support interventions (prone positioning and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). Through continuous evidence surveillance, these living recommendations are updated in near real-time to ensure clinicians in Australia have reliable, evidence-based guidelines for clinical decision-making. 21. The struggle within dual systems of government: dealing with conflict between traditional leaders and ward councilors in the greater Giyani Municipality in South Africa

Abstract

IntroductionCurrent frameworks of conflict resolution have shown only partial success, particularly in the context of local municipalities where conflicts persist. There is a pressing need for context-specific framework that address leadership conflicts while fostering peace.MethodsTo address the lack of progress in resolving conflicts, this study identifies major challenges undermining the assimilation and implementation of objectively informed conflict resolution strategies. A purposive sampling method was employed to select 33 respondents from the Greater Giyani Municipality. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed using statistically established matrix scoring procedures. ATLAS.ti software was utilized for data analysis.ResultsWithout claiming to be exhaustive, this paper highlights examples of externalities that threaten the coexistence of the dual system of governance in South African communities, with a focus on leadership conflict and unsustainable peace. Factors contributing to conflict escalation include capacity constraints, lack of inclusive, bias, divisive decision-making and contested court decisions.DiscussionThe study underscores the importance of addressing these challenges to foster effective conflict resolution. It emphasizes the need for the scientific community to provide critical information necessary for responding effectively to these challenges.ConclusionTo enhance conflict resolution in local municipalities, it is imperative to develop context-specific frameworks that address underlying challenges and promote sustainable peace. This requires concerted efforts from both researchers and practitioners to provide the necessary insights and strategies for resolution.

46. Finite element seismic analysis of guyed masts

Abstract

Guyed masts are a specialized type of structure commonly used in the broadcasting industry to support equipment at substantial heights. The dynamic analysis of these structures under seismic loading is a much understudied field that requires investigation. The complex nature of their analysis arises from the nonlinear force-deflection relationship of the cable supports as well as P-D effects in the mast. These lead to the structure exhibiting significant nonlinear characteristics even under working load conditions. Full nonlinear analysis of guyed masts is rarely performed as it is complex and time consuming. Masts are usually designed by equivalent static methods for wind and ice loading only, with the seismic load case often assumed to be less onerous. The validity of this assumption is investigated as part of this research. In this project four existing guyed masts in the UK with heights ranging from 99m to 312m are accurately analysed under various seismic loading conditions using SAP2000 structural analysis software. The research aims to gain an understanding into the distribution and magnitudes of forces developed during typical seismic and design wind events, establish indicators and trends that may aid in guyed mast design, and identify the circumstances in which seismic loading may be the governing load case. Investigations into the ‘travelling wave’ effect, the significance of vertical motion, and the suitability of a response spectrum analysis are also undertaken. Applicable sections of Eurocode 8 are followed wherever possible. It is shown that when subjected to substantial seismic events with peak ground accelerations in the region of 4m/s2, significant forces can develop in masts that are comparable to those produced during a wind assessment using the Patch Load method. The distribution of forces can be appreciably different from a wind loading analysis and any regions with irregular or inconsistent distribution of wind response forces can be vulnerable to seismic loading, particularly when mean hourly design wind speeds are less than 22m/s. It is also shown that enough common or predictable seismic behaviour exists between masts to suggest that the development of a simplified seismic analysis method for guyed masts is feasible.

47. Salivary microRNAs: Diagnostic markers of mild traumatic brain injury in contact-sport

Abstract

Concussion is difficult to diagnose, particularly when symptoms are atypical or late in presenting. An accurate and timely initial assessment is crucial for clinical management. Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) and blood markers of traumatic brain injury show promising results but their clinical applicability in concussion has significant limitations. In the study, we explored saliva as a new source of biomarkers of concussion. Saliva samples of concussed players were collected after 48–72 h from concussion and analyzed by high-throughput technologies. A discovery group of 10 concussed rugby professional and semiprofessional athletes and 10 non-concussed matched controls was used for the analysis of 92 inflammatory proteins by the Proseek-Multiplex-Inflammation technology. In addition, saliva samples of 6 concussed and 6 non-concussed athletes were used to screen 800 human microRNAs (miRNAs) by the Nanostring Technology. The results were then validated by RT-qPCR in an enlarged cohort (validation group) comprising 22 concussed athletes. Results showed, no significant variations of the 65 inflammatory proteins detected in saliva between groups but 5 microRNAs, miR-27b-3p (p = 0.016), let-7i-5p (p = 0.001), miR-142-3p (p = 0.008), miR-107 (p = 0.028), miR-135b-5p (p = 0.017) significantly upregulated in concussed athletes. Univariate ROC curve analysis showed that the differentially expressed miRNAs could be considered good classifiers of concussion. Further analyses showed significant correlation between these microRNAs and Reaction Time component of the ImPACT concussion assessment tool. In addition, biocomputation analysis predicted the involvement of these microRNAs in important biological processes that might be related to trauma, such as response to hypoxia, cell death, neurogenesis, axon repair and myelination. Ease of access and non-invasiveness of saliva samples make these biomarkers particularly suitable for concussion assessment.

Abstract

In South African municipalities, there has been a coexistence between elected and traditional leaders for decades. However, this coexistence has often been marked by numerous conflicts. These conflicts take different forms and dimensions; while priority has been given to violent conflicts, these conflicts escalate and rescale when not dealt with. However, it appears priority has been given to violent conflicts, making it critical to understand and deal with all forms of conflicts before they escalate. Therefore, this study examined the nature of the conflict in the Greater Giyani municipality of South Africa. Purposive sampling was used to select 33 participants. Interviews were conducted with knowledgeable individuals to gain insight into the tensions between traditional and elected leaders. Codes and themes were electronically generated from the narratives of community members and key informants using ATLAS ti.22. The study concluded that existing conflict resolution mechanisms focus more on violent conflicts than embedded ones. Again, the current study demonstrated that non-violent conflict, if not dealt with, can escalate into violent conflict. Thus, these research findings pointed to the need for state and non-state actors to pay attention to all forms of conflict. By identifying different types of conflicts between community leaders, this study contributes to understanding how conflicts between TLs and WCs manifest and highlights the extent of common conflicts.
