Search

Thanks to decades of observations using HST, the structure of galaxies at redshift $z>2$ has been widely studied in the rest-frame ultraviolet regime, which traces recent star formation from young stellar populations. But, we still have little information about the spatial distribution of the older, more evolved, stellar populations, constrained by the rest-frame infrared portion of galaxies' spectral energy distribution. We present the morphological characterization of a sample of 21 massive galaxies ($\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})>9.5$) at redshift $33$ massive galaxies show a smooth distribution of their rest-infrared light, strongly supporting the increasing number of regular disk galaxies already in place at early epochs. On the contrary, the ultraviolet structure obtained from HST observations is generally more irregular, catching the most recent episodes of star formation. Importantly, we find a segregation of morphologies across cosmic time, having massive galaxies at redshift $z>4$ later-type morphologies compared to $z\sim3$ galaxies. These findings suggest a transition phase in galaxy assembly and central mass build up already taking place at $z\sim3-4$. One of the surprising early findings with JWST has been the discovery of a strong "roll-over" or a softening of the absorption edge of Ly$\alpha$ in a large number of galaxies at ($z\gtrsim 6$), in addition to systematic offsets from photometric redshift estimates and fundamental galaxy scaling relations. This has been interpreted as damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption (DLA) wings from high column densities of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI), signifying major gas accretion events in the formation of these galaxies. To explore this new phenomenon systematically, we assemble the JWST/NIRSpec PRImordial gas Mass AssembLy (PRIMAL) legacy survey of 494 galaxies at $z=5.5-13.4$. We characterize this benchmark sample in full and spectroscopically derive the galaxy redshifts, metallicities, star-formation rates, and ultraviolet slopes. We define a new diagnostic, the Ly$\alpha$ damping parameter $D_{\rm Ly\alpha}$ to measure and quantify the Ly$\alpha$ emission strength, HI fraction in the IGM, or local HI column density for each source. The JWST-PRIMAL survey is based on the spectroscopic DAWN JWST Archive (DJA-Spec). All the software, reduced spectra, and spectroscopically derived quantities and catalogs are made publicly available in dedicated repositories. The fraction of strong galaxy DLAs are found to be in the range $65-95\%$ at $z>5.5$. The fraction of strong Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) is found to increase with decreasing redshift, in qualitative agreement with previous observational results, and are predominantly associated with low-metallicity and UV faint galaxies. By contrast, strong DLAs are observed in galaxies with a variety of intrinsic physical properties. Our results indicate that strong DLAs likely reflect a particular early assembly phase of reionization-era galaxies, at which point they are largely dominated by pristine HI gas accretion. Despite the importance of the dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z$>2 for understanding the galaxy evolution in the early Universe, their stellar distributions traced by the near-IR emission were spatially unresolved until the arrival of the JWST. In this work we present, for the first time, a spatially-resolved morphological analysis of the rest-frame near-IR (~1.1-3.5$\mu$m) emission in DSFGs traced with the JWST/MIRI. In particular, we study the mature stellar component for the three DSFGs and a Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) present in an overdensity at $z$=4.05. Moreover, we use MIRI images along with UV to (sub)-mm ancillary photometric data to model their SEDs and extract their main physical properties. The sub-arcsec resolution MIRI images have revealed that the stellar component present a wide range of morphologies, from disc-like to compact and clump-dominated structures. These near-IR structures contrast with their UV emission, which is usually diffuse and off-centered. The SED fitting analysis shows that GN20 dominates the total SFR with a value ~2500 $M_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ while GN20.2b has the highest stellar mass in the sample ($M_*$~2$\times$10$^{11}$ $M_\odot$). The two DSFGs classified as LTGs (GN20 and GN20.2a) show high specific SFR (sSFR>30 Gyr$^{-1}$) placing them above the star-forming main sequence (SFMS) at z~4 by >0.5 dex while the ETG (i.e.,GN20.2b) is compatible with the high-mass end of the main sequence. When comparing with other DSFGs in overdensities at $z$~2-7 we observe that our objects present similar SFRs, depletion times and projected separations. Nevertheless, the effective radii computed for GN20 and GN20.2a are up to two times larger than those of isolated galaxies observed in CEERS and ALMA-HUDF at similar redshifts. Nuclear regions of ultraluminous and luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) are powered by starbursts and/or active galactic nuclei (AGNs). These regions are often obscured by extremely high columns of gas and dust. Molecular lines in the submillimeter windows have the potential to determine the physical conditions of these compact obscured nuclei (CONs). We aim to reveal the distributions of HCN and HCO$^+$ emission in local U/LIRGs and investigate whether and how they are related to galaxy properties. Using ALMA, we have conducted sensitive observations of the HCN J=3--2 and HCO$^+$ J=3--2 lines toward 23 U/LIRGs in the local Universe (z < 0.07) with a spatial resolution of ~0.3" (~50--400 pc). We detected both HCN and HCO$^+$ in 21 galaxies, only HCN in one galaxy, and neither in one galaxy. The global HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratios, averaged over scales of ~0.5--4 kpc, range from 0.4 to 2.3, with an unweighted mean of 1.1. These line ratios appear to have no systematic trend with bolometric AGN luminosity or star formation rate. The line ratio varies with position and velocity within each galaxy, with an average interquartile range of 0.38 on a spaxel-by-spaxel basis. In eight out of ten galaxies known to have outflows and/or inflows, we found spatially and kinematically symmetric structures of high line ratios. These structures appear as a collimated bicone in two galaxies and as a thin spherical shell in six galaxies. Non-LTE analysis suggests that the high HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratio in outflows is predominantly influenced by the abundance ratio. Chemical model calculations indicate that the enhancement of HCN abundance in outflows is likely due to high-temperature chemistry triggered by shock heating. These results imply that the HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratio can aid in identifying the outflow geometry when the shock velocity of the outflows is sufficiently high to heat the gas., Comment: 52 pages, 35 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Dusty star-forming galaxies emit most of their light at far-IR to mm wavelengths as their star formation is highly obscured. Far-IR and mm observations have revealed their dust, neutral and molecular gas properties. The sensitivity of JWST at rest-frame optical and near-infrared wavelengths now allows the study of the stellar and ionized gas content. We investigate the spatially resolved distribution and kinematics of the ionized gas in GN20, a dusty star forming galaxy at $z$=4.0548. We present deep MIRI/MRS integral field spectroscopy of the near-infrared rest-frame emission of GN20. We detect spatially resolved \paa, out to a radius of 6 kpc, distributed in a clumpy morphology. The star formation rate derived from \paa\ (144 $\pm$ 9 \msunperyear) is only 7.7 $\pm 0.5 $\% of the infrared star formation rate (1860 $\pm$ 90 \msunperyear). We attribute this to very high extinction (A$_V$ = 17.2 $\pm$ 0.4 mag, or A$_{V,mixed}$ = 44 $\pm$ 3 mag), especially in the nucleus of GN20, where only faint \paa\ is detected, suggesting a deeply buried starburst. We identify four, spatially unresolved, clumps in the \paa\ emission. Based on the double peaked \paa\ profile we find that each clump consist of at least two sub-clumps. We find mass upper limits consistent with them being formed in a gravitationally unstable gaseous disk. The UV bright region of GN20 does not have any detected \paa\ emission, suggesting an age of more than 10 Myrs for this region of the galaxy. From the rotation profile of \paa\ we conclude that the gas kinematics are rotationally dominated and the $v_{rot}/\sigma_{m} = 3.8 \pm 1.4$ is similar to low-redshift LIRGs. We present a study of the mid-IR (MIR) emission of quiescent galaxies (QGs) beyond the local universe. Using deep $JWST$ imaging in the SMACS-0723 cluster field we identify a mass limited ($M_{*} >10^{9}$M$_{\odot}$) sample of intermediate redshift QGs ($0.2 5 \mu$m, can be attributed to different dust continuum levels and/or the presence of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) features. The latter would indicate enhanced 11.3- and 12.7 $\mu$m PAHs strengths with respect to those at 6.2- and 7.7$ \mu$m, consistent with the observed spectra of local ellipticals and indicative of soft radiation fields. Finally, we augment the average UV-to-MIR spectrum of the population with cold dust and gas emission in the far-IR/mm and construct a panchromatic UV-to-radio SED that can serve as a template for the future exploration of the interstellar medium of $z>0$ QGs with ALMA and $JWST$., Comment: The panchromatic QG SED has been made publicly available at http://www.georgiosmagdis.com/software

By using the ultra-deep \textit{JWST}/MIRI image at 5.6 $\mu m$ in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field, we constrain the role of strong H$\alpha$-emitters (HAEs) during Cosmic Reionization at $z\simeq7-8$. Our sample of HAEs is comprised of young ($<35\;\rm Myr$) galaxies, except for one single galaxy ($\approx 300\;\rm Myr$), with low stellar masses ($\lesssim 10^{9}\;\rm M_{\odot}$). These HAEs show a wide range of UV-$\beta$ slopes, with a median value of $\beta = -2.15\pm0.21$ which broadly correlates with stellar mass. We estimate the ionizing photon production efficiency ($\xi_{ion,0}$) of these sources (assuming $f_{esc,LyC} = 0\%$), which yields a median value $\rm log_{10}(\xi_{ion,0}/(Hz\;erg^{-1})) = 25.50^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$. We show that $\xi_{ion,0}$ positively correlates with EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) and specific star formation rate (sSFR). Instead $\xi_{ion,0}$ weakly anti-correlates with stellar mass and $\beta$. Based on the $\beta$ values, we predict $f_{esc, LyC}=4\%^{+3}_{-2}$, which results in $\rm log_{10}(\xi_{ion}/(Hz\;erg^{-1})) = 25.55^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$. Considering this and related findings from the literature, we find a mild evolution of $\xi_{ion}$with redshift. Additionally, our results suggest that these HAEs require only modest escape fractions ($f_{esc, rel}$) of 6$-$15\% to reionize their surrounding intergalactic medium. By only considering the contribution of these HAEs, we estimated their total ionizing emissivity ($\dot{N}_{ion}$) as $\dot{N}_{ion} = 10^{50.53 \pm 0.45}; \text{s}^{-1}\text{Mpc}^{-3}$. When comparing their $\dot{N}_{ion}$ with "non-H$\alpha$ emitter" galaxies across the same redshift range, we find that that strong, young, and low-mass emitters may have played an important role during Cosmic Reionization., Comment: 21 pages, 11 Figures, 1 table. We present MIRI/JWST medium-resolution spectroscopy (MRS) and imaging (MIRIM) of the lensed galaxy MACS1149-JD1 at a redshift of $z$=9.1092$\pm$0.0002 (Universe age about 530 Myr). We detect, for the first time, spatially resolved H$\alpha$ emission in a galaxy at a redshift above nine. The structure of the H$\alpha$ emitting gas consists of two clumps, S and N. The total H$\alpha$ luminosity implies an instantaneous star-formation of 5.3$\pm$0.4 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for solar metallicities. The ionizing photon production efficiency, $\log(\zeta_\mathrm{ion})$, shows a spatially resolved structure with values of 25.55$\pm$0.03, 25.47$\pm$0.03, and 25.91$\pm$0.09 Hz erg$^{-1}$ for the integrated galaxy, and clumps S and N, respectively. The H$\alpha$ rest-frame equivalent width, EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$), is 726$^{+660}_{-182}$ \'Angstrom for the integrated galaxy, but presents extreme values of 531$^{+300}_{-96}$ \'Angstrom and $\geq$1951 \'Angstrom for clumps S and N, respectively. The spatially resolved ionizing photon production efficiency is within the range of values measured in galaxies at redshift above six, and well above the canonical value (25.2$\pm$0.1 Hz erg$^{-1}$). The extreme difference of EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) for Clumps S and N indicates the presence of a recent (<5 Myrs) burst in clump N and a star formation over a larger period of time (e.g., $\sim$50 Myr) in clump S. Finally, clump S and N show very different H$\alpha$ kinematics with velocity dispersions of 56$\pm$4 km s$^{-1}$ and 113$\pm$33 km s$^{-1}$, likely indicating the presence of outflows or increased turbulence in the clump N. The chemical enrichment of dust and metals are vital processes in constraining the star formation history of the universe. Previously, the dust masses of high-redshift star-forming galaxies have been determined through their far-infrared continuum, however, equivalent, and potentially simpler, approaches to determining the metal masses have yet to be explored at $z\gtrsim 2$. Here, we present a new method of inferring the metal mass in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies out to $z\approx 8$, using the far-infrared [CII]$-158\mu$m emission line as a proxy. We calibrated the [CII]-to-$M_{\rm Z,ISM}$ conversion factor based on a benchmark observational sample at $z\approx 0$, in addition to gamma-ray burst sightlines at $z>2$ and cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies at $z\approx 0$ and $z\approx 6$. We found a universal scaling across redshifts of $\log (M_{\rm Z,ISM}/M_\odot) = \log (L_{\rm [CII]}/L_\odot) - 0.45,$ with a 0.4 dex scatter, which is constant over more than two orders of magnitude in metallicity. We applied this scaling to recent surveys for [CII] in galaxies at $z\gtrsim 2$ and determined the fraction of metals retained in the gas-phase ISM, $M_{\rm Z,ISM} / M_\star$, as a function of redshift showing that an increasing fraction of metals reside in the ISM of galaxies at higher redshifts. We place further constraints on the cosmic metal mass density in the ISM ($\Omega_{\rm Z,ISM}$) at $z\approx 5$ and $\approx 7$, yielding $\Omega_{\rm Z,ISM} = 6.6^{+13}_{-4.3}\times 10^{-7}\,M_\odot\, {\rm Mpc}^{-3}$ ($z\approx 5$) and $\Omega_{\rm Z,ISM} = 2.0^{+3.5}_{-1.3}\times 10^{-7}\,M_\odot\, {\rm Mpc}^{-3}$ ($z\approx 7$). These results are consistent with the expected metal yields from the integrated star formation history at the respective redshifts. Terrestrial and sub-Neptune planets are expected to form in the inner ($<10~$AU) regions of protoplanetary disks. Water plays a key role in their formation, although it is yet unclear whether water molecules are formed in-situ or transported from the outer disk. So far Spitzer Space Telescope observations have only provided water luminosity upper limits for dust-depleted inner disks, similar to PDS 70, the first system with direct confirmation of protoplanet presence. Here we report JWST observations of PDS 70, a benchmark target to search for water in a disk hosting a large ($\sim54~$AU) planet-carved gap separating an inner and outer disk. Our findings show water in the inner disk of PDS 70. This implies that potential terrestrial planets forming therein have access to a water reservoir. The column densities of water vapour suggest in-situ formation via a reaction sequence involving O, H$_2$, and/or OH, and survival through water self-shielding. This is also supported by the presence of CO$_2$ emission, another molecule sensitive to UV photodissociation. Dust shielding, and replenishment of both gas and small dust from the outer disk, may also play a role in sustaining the water reservoir. The nature and evolution of high-redshift dusty star-forming galaxies (high-z DSFGs) remain an open question. Their massive gas reservoirs play an important role in driving the intense star-formation rates hosted in these galaxies. We aim to estimate the molecular gas content of high-z DSFGs by using various gas mass tracers such as the [CI], CO, [CII] emission lines and the dust content. These tracers need to be well calibrated as they are all limited by uncertainties on factors such as aCO, XCI, aCII and GDR, thereby affecting the determination of the gas mass accurately. The main goal of our work is to check the consistency between the gas mass tracers and cross-calibrate the uncertain factors. We observe the two [CI] line transitions for 29 SPT-SMGs with the ALMA-ACA. Additionally, we also present new APEX observations of [CII] line for 9 of these galaxies. We find a nearly linear relation between the infrared luminosity and [CI] luminosity if we fit the starbursts and main-sequence galaxies separately. We measure a median [CI]-derived excitation temperature of 34.5+/-2.1 K. We probe the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) such as density and radiation field intensity using [CI] to mid- or high-J CO lines and [CI] to infrared luminosity ratio, and find similar values to the SMG populations in literature. Finally, the gas masses estimated from [CI], CO, dust, and [CII] do not exhibit any significant trend with the infrared luminosity or the dust temperature. We provide the various cross-calibrations between these tracers. Our study confirms that [CI] is a suitable tracer of the molecular gas content, and shows an overall agreement between all the classical gas tracers used at high redshift. Luminous infrared galaxies at high redshifts ($z$>4) include extreme starbursts that build their stellar mass over short periods of time (>100 Myr). These galaxies are considered to be the progenitors of massive quiescent galaxies at intermediate redshifts ($z\sim$2) but their stellar structure and buildup is unknown. Here, we present the first spatially resolved near-infrared imaging of GN20, one of the most luminous dusty star-forming galaxies known to date, observed at an epoch when the Universe was only 1.5 Gyr old. The 5.6$\mu$m image taken with the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI/JWST) shows that GN20 is a very luminous galaxy (M$_\mathrm{1.1\mu m,AB}$=$-$25.01), with a stellar structure composed of a conspicuous central source and an extended envelope. The central source is an unresolved nucleus that carries 9% of the total flux. The nucleus is co-aligned with the peak of the cold dust emission, and offset by 3.9 kpc from the ultraviolet stellar emission. The diffuse stellar envelope is similar in size to the clumpy CO molecular gas distribution. The centroid of the stellar envelope is offset by 1 kpc from the unresolved nucleus, suggesting GN20 is involved in an interaction or merger event supported by its location as the brightest galaxy in a proto-cluster. The stellar size of GN20 is larger by a factor of about 3-5 than known spheroids, disks, and irregulars at $z\sim$4, while its size and low S\'ersic index are similar to those measured in dusty, infrared luminous galaxies at $z\sim$2 of the same mass. GN20 has all the ingredients necessary for evolving into a massive spheroidal quiescent galaxy at intermediate $z$: it is a large, luminous galaxy at $z$=4.05 involved in a short and massive starburst centred in the stellar nucleus and extended over the entire galaxy, out to radii of 4 kpc, and likely induced by the interaction or merger with a member of the proto-cluster., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We utilise the unprecedented depth and resolution of recent early-release science (ERS) JWST observations to define the near-infrared counterparts of sub-millimetre selected galaxies (SMGs). We identify 45 SCUBA-2 SMG positions within The Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS) JWST/NIRCam fields. Through an analysis of multi-wavelength $p$-values, NIRCam colours and predicted SCUBA-2 fluxes, we define 43 JWST/NIRCam counterparts to the SCUBA-2 SMGs, finding a 63 per cent agreement with those identified in prior $HST$ studies. Using EaZy-py we fit the available HST and JWST observations to quantify the photometric redshifts of the NIRCam-SMGs, establishing a broad range of redshift from $z$$\approx$0.2$-$5.4 with a median of $z$$\approx$2.29, in agreement with other studies of SMGs. We analyse their rest-frame optical and near-infrared morphological properties (e.g. effective radius (R$_{\rm e}$), S\'ersic index ($n$), CAS, Gini and M$_{20}$), finding, on average, late-type disc-like morphologies with large scatter into the intermediate and merger regions of the non-parametric parameter space. For the non-merging galaxies, we find a median rest-frame optical size and S\'ersic index (and $1\sigma$ scatter) of R$_{\rm e}$=3.10$\pm$1.67kpc and $n$=0.96$\pm$0.66. Whilst in the rest-frame near-infrared we establish more compact, higher S\'ersic index morphologies (R$_{\rm e}$=1.64$\pm$0.97, $n$=1.85$\pm$0.63). We further establish that both the rest-frame optical and near-infrared effective radii correlate negatively (at a 2$\sigma$ level) with redshift whilst the S\'ersic index remains constant with cosmic time. Our results are consistent with the picture of inside-out galaxy evolution, with more centrally concentrated older stellar populations, and more extended, younger star-forming regions whose stellar emission is heavily attenuated in the central regions., Comment: Submitted for publication in A&A. Aims: The JWST program JOYS (JWST Observations of Young protoStars) aims at characterizing the physical and chemical properties of young high- and low-mass star-forming regions, in particular the unique mid-infrared diagnostics of the warmer gas and solid-state components. We present early results from the high-mass star formation region IRAS23385+6053. Methods: The JOYS program uses the MIRI MRS with its IFU to investigate a sample of high- and low-mass star-forming protostellar systems. Results: The 5 to 28mum MIRI spectrum of IRAS23385+6053 shows a plethora of features. While the general spectrum is typical for an embedded protostar, we see many atomic and molecular gas lines boosted by the higher spectral resolution and sensitivity compared to previous space missions. Furthermore, ice and dust absorption features are also present. Here, we focus on the continuum emission, outflow tracers like the H2, [FeII] and [NeII] lines as well as the potential accretion tracer Humphreys alpha HI(7--6). The short-wavelength MIRI data resolve two continuum sources A and B, where mid-infrared source A is associated with the main mm continuum peak. The combination of mid-infrared and mm data reveals a young cluster in its making. Combining the mid-infrared outflow tracer H2, [FeII] and [NeII] with mm SiO data shows a complex interplay of at least three molecular outflows driven by protostars in the forming cluster. Furthermore, the Humphreys alpha line is detected at a 3-4sigma level towards the mid-infrared sources A and B. Following Rigliaco et al. (2015), one can roughly estimate accretion luminosities and corresponding accretion rates between ~2.6x10^-6 and ~0.9x10^-4 M_sun/yr. This is discussed in the context of the observed outflow rates. We present 850um imaging of the XMM-LSS field observed for 170 hours as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope SCUBA-2 Large eXtragalactic Survey (S2LXS). S2LXS XMM-LSS maps an area of 9 square degrees, reaching a moderate depth of 1-sigma ~ 4 mJy/beam. This is the largest contiguous area of extragalactic sky mapped by JCMT at 850um to date. The wide area of the S2LXS XMM-LSS survey allows us to probe the ultra-bright (S_850um > 15 mJy), yet rare submillimetre population. We present the S2LXS XMM-LSS catalogue, which comprises 40 sources detected at >5-sigma significance, with deboosted flux densities in the range of 7 mJy to 48 mJy. We robustly measure the bright-end of the 850um number counts at flux densities >7 mJy, reducing the Poisson errors compared to existing measurements. The S2LXS XMM-LSS observed number counts show the characteristic upturn at bright fluxes, expected to be motivated by local sources of submillimetre emission and high-redshift strongly lensed galaxies. We find that the observed 850um number counts are best reproduced by model predictions that include either strong lensing or source blending from a 15 arcsec beam, indicating that both may make an important contribution to the observed over-abundance of bright single dish 850um selected sources. We make use of \textit{JWST} medium and broad-band NIRCam imaging, along with ultra-deep MIRI $5.6 \rm \mu m$ imaging, in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (XDF) to identify prominent line emitters at $z\simeq 7-8$. Out of a total of 58 galaxies at $z\simeq 7-8$, we find 18 robust candidates ($\simeq$31\%) for (H$\beta$ + [OIII]) emitters, based on their enhanced fluxes in the F430M and F444W filters, with EW$_{0}$(H$\beta$ +[OIII]) $\simeq 87 - 2100$ {\AA}. Among these emitters, 16 lie in the MIRI coverage area and 12 exhibit a clear flux excess at $5.6 \, \rm \mu m$, indicating the simultaneous presence of a prominent H$\alpha$ emission line with EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) $\simeq 200-3000$ {\AA}. This is the first time that H$\alpha$ emission can be detected in individual galaxies at $z>7$. The H$\alpha$ line, when present, allows us to separate the contributions of H$\beta$ and [OIII] to the (H$\beta$ +[OIII]) complex, and derive H$\alpha$-based star formation rates (SFRs). We find that in most cases [OIII]/H$\beta > 1$. Instead, two galaxies have [OIII]/H$\beta < 1$, indicating that the NIRCam flux excess is mainly driven by H$\beta$. This could potentially imply extremely low metallicities. Most prominent line emitters are very young starbursts or galaxies on their way to/from the starburst cloud. They make for a cosmic SFR density $\rm log_{10}(\rho_{SFR_{H\alpha}}) \simeq -2.35$, which is about a quarter of the total value ($\rm log_{10}(\rho_{SFR_{tot}}) \simeq -1.76$) at $z\simeq 7-8$. Using MIRI on-board JWST we present mid-infrared sub-arcsec imaging (MIRIM) and spectroscopy (MRS) of the hyperluminous infrared system SPT0311-58 at z=6.9. MIRI observations are compared with existing ALMA far-infrared continuum and [CII]158$\mu$m imaging. Even though the ALMA observations suggests very high star formation rates (SFR) in the eastern (E) and western (W) galaxies of the system, the H$\alpha$ line is not detected. This, together with the detection of the Pa$\alpha$ line, implies very high optical nebular extinction with lower limits of 4.2 (E) and 3.9 mag (W), and even larger 5.6 (E) and 10.0 (W) for SED derived values. The extinction-corrected Pa$\alpha$ SFRs are 383 and 230M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ for the E and W galaxies, respectively. This represents 50% of the SFRs derived from the [CII]158$\mu$m line and infrared light for the E galaxy and as low as 6% for the W galaxy. The MIRI observations reveal a clumpy stellar structure, with each clump having 3 to 5 $\times$10$^{9}$M$_\mathrm{\odot}$, leading to a total stellar mass of 2.0 and 1.5$\times$10$^{10}$M$_\mathrm{\odot}$ for the E and W galaxies, respectively. The specific SFR in the stellar clumps ranges from 25 to 59Gyr$^{-1}$, which are 3 to 10 times larger than the values measured in galaxies of similar mass at redshifts 6 to 8. The overall gas mass fraction is $M_\mathrm{gas}$/$M_*\sim3$, similar to that of z=4.5-6 star-forming galaxies. The observed properties of SPT0311-58 such as the clumpy distribution at sub(kpc) scales and the very high average extinction are similar to those observed in low- and intermediate-z LIRGs and ULIRGs, even though SPT0311-58 is observed only 800 Myr after the Big Bang. We present a joint analysis of the galaxy S04590 at $z=8.496$ based on NIRSpec, NIRCam, and NIRISS observations obtained through as part of Early Release Observations programme of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the far-infrared [CII]-$158\mu$m emission line detected by dedicated Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations. We determine the physical properties of S04590 from modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and through the redshifted optical nebular emission lines detected with JWST/NIRSpec. The best-fit SED model reveals a low-mass ($M_\star = 10^{7.2}-10^{8}\,M_{\odot}$) galaxy with a low oxygen abundance of $12+\log{\rm (O/H)} = 7.16^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$ derived from the strong nebular and auroral emission lines. Assuming that [CII] effectively traces the interstellar medium (ISM), we estimate the total gas mass of the galaxy to be $M_{\rm gas} = (8.0\pm 4.0)\times 10^{8}\,M_\odot$ based on the luminosity and spatial extent of [CII]. This yields an exceptionally high gas fraction, $f_{\rm gas} = M_{\rm gas}/(M_{\rm gas} + M_\star) \gtrsim 90\%$, though still consistent within the range expected for its low metallicity. We further derive the metal mass of the galaxy based on the gas mass and gas-phase metallicity, which we find to be consistent with the expected metal production from Type II supernovae. Finally, we make the first constraints on the dust-to-gas (DTG) and dust-to-metals (DTM) ratios of galaxies in the epoch of reionization at $z\gtrsim 6$, showing overall low mass ratios of logDGT $<-3.8$ and logDTM $<-0.5$, though consistent with local scaling relations and in particular the local metal-poor galaxy I Zwicky 18. We present the average rest-frame spectrum of the final catalog of dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) selected from the South Pole Telescope SZ survey (SPT-SZ) and measured with Band 3 of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). This work builds on the previous average rest-frame spectrum, given in Spilker et al. (2014) for the first 22 sources, and is comprised of a total of 78 sources, normalized by their respective apparent dust masses. The spectrum spans $1.9$$<$z$<$$6.9$ and covers rest-frame frequencies of 240$-$800 GHz. Combining this data with low-J CO observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), we detect multiple bright line features from $^{12}$CO, $[$CI$]$, and H$_2$O, as well as fainter molecular transitions from $^{13}$CO, HCN, HCO$^+$, HNC, CN, H$_2$O$^+$, and CH. We use these detections, along with limits from other molecules, to characterize the typical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) for these high redshift DSFGs. We are able to divide the large sample into subsets in order to explore how the average spectrum changes with various galaxy properties, such as effective dust temperature. We find that systems with hotter dust temperatures exhibit differences in the bright $^{12}$CO emission lines, and contain either warmer and more excited dense gas tracers, or larger dense gas reservoirs. These observations will serve as a reference point to studies of the ISM in distant luminous DSFGs (L$_{\mathrm{IR}}$$>$$10^{12}$L$_\odot$), and will inform studies of chemical evolution before the peak epoch of star formation at $z=2-3$., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at redshift z$\geq$1 are among the most vigorously star-forming galaxies in the Universe. However, their dense ($\geq$10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$ ) gas phase - typically traced by HCN(1-0) - remains almost entirely unexplored: only two DSFGs have been detected in HCN(1-0) to date. We present results of a JVLA survey of the J=1-0 transition of HCN, HCO+, and HNC(1-0) in six strongly lensed DSFGs at z = 2.5 - 3.3, effectively doubling the number of DSFGs with deep observations of these lines. We detect HCN(1-0) emission in one source (J1202+5354, 4.4$\sigma$), with a tentative HCO+ (1-0) detection in another (J1609+6045, 3.3$\sigma$). Spectral stacking yields strict upper limits on the HCN/FIR ($\leq$3.6$\times$10$^{-4}$) and HCN/CO(1-0) ratios ($\leq$0.045). The inferred HCN/FIR ratios (a proxy for the star-formation efficiency) are consistent with those in z$\sim$0 FIR-luminous starbursts. However, the HCN/CO ratios - a proxy for the dense-gas fraction - are a factor of a few lower than suggested by the two previous DSFG detections. Our results imply that most DSFGs have low dense-gas fractions. A comparison with Krumholz & Thompson (2007) models of star-forming galaxies indicates that the bulk of gas in DSFGs is at lower densities ($\approx$10$^2$ cm$^{-3}$ ), similar to "normal" star-forming galaxies, rather than ultraluminous starbursts., Comment: Submitted to A&A 28th April 2022, accepted 19th July 2022

We present the multi-wavelength counterparts of 850-$\mu$m selected submillimetre sources over a 2-deg$^2$ field centred on the North Ecliptic Pole. In order to overcome the large beam size (15 arcsec) of the 850-$\mu$m images, deep optical to near-infrared (NIR) photometric data and arcsecond-resolution 20-cm images are used to identify counterparts of submillimetre sources. Among 647 sources, we identify 514 reliable counterparts for 449 sources (69 per cent in number), based either on probabilities of chance associations calculated from positional offsets or offsets combined with the optical-to-NIR colours. In the radio imaging, the fraction of 850-$\mu$m sources having multiple counterparts is 7 per cent. The photometric redshift, infrared luminosity, stellar mass, star-formation rate (SFR), and the AGN contribution to the total infrared luminosity of the identified counterparts are investigated through spectral energy distribution fitting. The SMGs are infrared-luminous galaxies at an average $\langle z\rangle=2.5$ with $\mathrm{log}_{10} (L_\mathrm{IR}/\mathrm{L}_\odot)=11.5-13.5$, with a mean stellar mass of $\mathrm{log}_{10} (M_\mathrm{star}/\mathrm{M}_\odot)=10.90$ and SFR of $\mathrm{log}_{10} (\mathrm{SFR/M_\odot\,yr^{-1}})=2.34$. The SMGs show twice as large SFR as galaxies on the star-forming main sequence, and about 40 per cent of the SMGs are classified as objects with bursty star formation. At $z\ge4$, the contribution of AGN luminosity to total luminosity for most SMGs is larger than 30 per cent. Understanding how super-massive black holes form and grow in the early Universe has become a major challenge since the discovery of luminous quasars only 700 million years after the Big Bang. Simulations indicate an evolutionary sequence of dust-reddened quasars emerging from heavily dust-obscured starbursts that then transition to unobscured luminous quasars by expelling gas and dust. Although the last phase has been identified out to a redshift of 7.6, a transitioning quasar has not been found at similar redshifts owing to their faintness at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Here we report observations of an ultraviolet compact object, GNz7q, associated with a dust-enshrouded starburst at a redshift of z=7.1899+/-0.0005. The host galaxy is more luminous in dust emission than any other known object at this epoch, forming 1,600 solar masses of stars per year within a central radius of 480 parsec. A red point source in the far-ultraviolet is identified in deep, high-resolution imaging and slitless spectroscopy. GNz7q is extremely faint in X-rays, which indicates the emergence of a uniquely ultraviolet compact star-forming region or a Compton-thick super-Eddington black-hole accretion disk at the dusty starburst core. In the latter case, the observed properties are consistent with predictions from cosmological simulations and suggest that GNz7q is an antecedent to unobscured luminous quasars at later epochs., Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) has become a cornerstone of extragalactic astronomy. Since the last public catalog in 2015, a wealth of new imaging and spectroscopic data has been collected in the COSMOS field. This paper describes the collection, processing, and analysis of this new imaging data to produce a new reference photometric redshift catalog. Source detection and multi-wavelength photometry is performed for 1.7 million sources across the $2\,\mathrm{deg}^{2}$ of the COSMOS field, $\sim$966,000 of which are measured with all available broad-band data using both traditional aperture photometric methods and a new profile-fitting photometric extraction tool, The Farmer, which we have developed. A detailed comparison of the two resulting photometric catalogs is presented. Photometric redshifts are computed for all sources in each catalog utilizing two independent photometric redshift codes. Finally, a comparison is made between the performance of the photometric methodologies and of the redshift codes to demonstrate an exceptional degree of self-consistency in the resulting photometric redshifts. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), covering a nearly contiguous 289 GHz frequency range between 84.2 and 373.2 GHz, to image the continuum and spectral line emission at 1.6\arcsec ($\sim 28$ pc) resolution down to a sensitivity of $30-50$ mK. This article describes the ALMA Comprehensive High-resolution Extragalactic Molecular Inventory (ALCHEMI) Large Program. We focus on the analysis of the spectra extracted from the $15''$ ($\sim255$ pc) resolution ALMA Compact Array data. We model the molecular emission assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium with 78 species detected. Additionally, multiple hydrogen and helium recombination lines are identified. Spectral lines contribute 5 to 36\% of the total emission in frequency bins of 50 GHz. We report the first extragalactic detections of C$_2$H$_5$OH, HOCN, HC$_3$HO, and several rare isotopologues. Isotopic ratios of carbon, oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen and silicon were measure with multiple species. Infrared pumped vibrationaly excited HCN, HNC, and HC$_3$N emission, originating in massive star formation locations, is clearly detected at low resolution, while we do not detect it for HCO$^+$. We suggest high temperature conditions in these regions driving a seemingly "carbon-rich" chemistry which may also explain the observed high abundance of organic species close to those in Galactic hot cores. The $L_{vib}/L_{IR}$ ratio is used as a proxy to estimate a $3\%$ contribution from proto super star cluster to the global infrared emission. Measured isotopic ratios with high dipole moment species agree with those within the central kiloparsec of the Galaxy, while those derived from $\rm^{13}C^{18}O$ are a factor of 5 larger, confirming the existence of multiple ISM components within NGC 253 with different degrees of nucleosynthesis enrichment. Galaxy clusters provide an excellent probe in various research fields in astrophysics and cosmology. However, the number of galaxy clusters detected so far in the $AKARI$ North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field is limited. In this work, we provide galaxy cluster candidates in the $AKARI$ NEP field with the minimum requisites based only on coordinates and photometric redshift (photo-$z$) of galaxies. We used galaxies detected in 5 optical bands ($g$, $r$, $i$, $z$, and $Y$) by the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), assisted with $u$-band from Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) MegaPrime/MegaCam, and IRAC1 and IRAC2 bands from the $Spitzer$ space telescope for photo-$z$ estimation. We calculated the local density around every galaxy using the 10$^{th}$-nearest neighbourhood. Cluster candidates were determined by applying the friends-of-friends algorithm to over-densities. 88 cluster candidates containing 4390 member galaxies below redshift 1.1 in 5.4 deg$^2$ have been detected. The reliability of our method was examined through false detection tests, redshift uncertainty tests, and applications on the COSMOS data, giving false detection rates of 0.01 to 0.05 and recovery rate of 0.9 at high richness. 3 X-ray clusters previously observed by $ROSAT$ and $Chandra$ were recovered. The cluster galaxies show higher stellar mass and lower star formation rate (SFR) compared to the field galaxies in two-sample Z-tests. These cluster candidates are useful for environmental studies of galaxy evolution and future astronomical surveys in the NEP, where $AKARI$ has performed unique 9-band mid-infrared photometry for tens of thousands of galaxies., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, has been accepted for publication in MNRAS

Some luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) host extremely compact and dusty nuclei. The intense infrared radiation arising from warm dust in these sources is prone to excite vibrational levels of molecules such as HCN. This results in emission from the rotational transitions of vibrationally excited HCN (HCN-vib), with the brightest emission found in compact obscured nuclei (CONs). We aim to establish how common CONs are in the local Universe, and whether their prevalence depends on the luminosity or other properties of the host galaxy. We have conducted an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) survey of the rotational J=3-2 transition of HCN-vib in a sample of 46 far-infrared luminous galaxies. Compact obscured nuclei are identified in 38 percent of ULIRGs, 21 percent of LIRGs, and 0 percent of lower luminosity galaxies. We find no dependence on the inclination of the host galaxy, but strong evidence of lower IRAS 25 to 60 {\mu}m flux density ratios (f25/f60) in CONs compared to the rest of the sample. Furthermore, we find that CONs have stronger silicate features (s9.7{\mu}m) but similar PAH equivalent widths (EQW6.2{\mu}m) compared to other galaxies. In the local Universe, CONs are primarily found in (U)LIRGs. High resolution continuum observations of the individual nuclei are required to determine if the CON phenomenon is related to the inclinations of the nuclear disks. The lower f25/f60 ratios in CONs as well as the results for the mid-infrared diagnostics investigated are consistent with large dust columns shifting the nuclear radiation to longer wavelengths, making the mid- and far-infrared "photospheres" significantly cooler than the interior regions. The South Pole Telescope (SPT) has systematically identified 81 high-redshift, strongly gravitationally lensed, dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) in a 2500 square degree cosmological mm-wave survey. We present the final spectroscopic redshift survey of this flux-limited ($S_{870\, \mathrm{\mu m}} > 25\, \mathrm{mJy}$) sample, initially selected at $1.4$ mm. The redshift survey was conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array across the $3$ mm spectral window, targeting carbon monoxide line emission. By combining these measurements with ancillary data, the SPT sample is now spectroscopically complete, with redshifts spanning $1.9$$<$$z$$<$$6.9$ and a median of $z=3.9 \pm 0.2$. We present the mm through far-infrared photometry and spectral energy density fits for all sources, along with their inferred intrinsic properties. Comparing the properties of the SPT sources to the unlensed DSFG population, we demonstrate that the SPT-selected DSFGs represent the most extreme infrared-luminous galaxies, even after accounting for strong gravitational lensing. The SPT sources have a median star formation rate of $2.3(2)\times 10^3\, \mathrm{M_\odot yr^{-1}}$ and a median dust mass of $1.4(1)\times10^9\, \mathrm{M_\odot}$. However, the inferred gas depletion timescales of the SPT sources are comparable to those of unlensed DSFGs, once redshift is taken into account. This SPT sample contains roughly half of the known spectroscopically confirmed DSFGs at $z$$>$$5$, making this the largest sample of high-redshift DSFGs to-date, and enabling the "high-redshift tail" of extremely luminous DSFGs to be measured. We present Atacama Compact Array and Atacama Pathfinder Experiment observations of the [N II] 205 $\mu$m fine-structure line in 40 sub-millimetre galaxies lying at redshifts z = 3 to 6, drawn from the 2500 deg$^2$ South Pole Telescope survey. This represents the largest uniformly selected sample of high-redshift [N II] 205 $\mu$m measurements to date. 29 sources also have [C II] 158 $\mu$m line observations allowing a characterization of the distribution of the [C II] to [N II] luminosity ratio for the first time at high-redshift. The sample exhibits a median L$_{[C II]}$ /L$_{[N II]}$ $\approx$ 11 and interquartile range of 5.0 to 24.7. These ratios are similar to those observed in local (U)LIRGs, possibly indicating similarities in their interstellar medium. At the extremes, we find individual sub-millimetre galaxies with L$_{[C II]}$ /L$_{[N II]}$ low enough to suggest a smaller contribution from neutral gas than ionized gas to the [C II] flux and high enough to suggest strongly photon or X-ray region dominated flux. These results highlight a large range in this line luminosity ratio for sub-millimetre galaxies, which may be caused by variations in gas density, the relative abundances of carbon and nitrogen, ionization parameter, metallicity, and a variation in the fractional abundance of ionized and neutral interstellar medium., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Understanding the nuclear growth and feedback processes in galaxies requires investigating their often obscured central regions. One way to do this is to use (sub)millimeter line emission from vibrationally excited HCN (HCN-vib). It has been suggested that the most intense HCN-vib emission from a galaxy is connected to a phase of nuclear growth that occurs before the nuclear feedback processes have been fully developed. We aim to investigate if there is a connection between the presence of strong HCN-vib emission and the development of feedback in (U)LIRGs. We collected literature and archival data to compare the luminosities of rotational lines of HCN-vib, normalized to the total infrared luminosity, to the median velocities of 119 {\mu}m OH absorption lines, potentially indicating outflows, in a total of 17 (U)LIRGs. The most HCN-vib luminous systems all lack signatures of significant molecular outflows in the far-infrared OH absorption lines. However, at least some of the systems with bright HCN-vib emission do have fast and collimated outflows that can be seen in spectral lines at longer wavelengths. We conclude that the galaxy nuclei with the highest L(HCN-vib)/L(IR) do not drive wide-angle outflows detectable using the median velocities of far-infrared OH absorption lines. It is possible that this is due to an orientation effect where sources which are oriented in such a way that their outflows are not along our line of sight also radiate a smaller proportion of their infrared luminosity in our direction. It could also be that massive wide-angle outflows destroy the deeply embedded regions responsible for bright HCN-vib emission, so that the two phenomena cannot coexist. We present sub-kpc-scale mapping of the 870 $\mu$m ALMA continuum emission in six luminous ($L_{\rm IR}~\sim~5~\times10^{12}$ L$_{\odot}$) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) from the ALESS survey of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. Our high-fidelity 0.07$''$-resolution imaging ($\sim$500 pc) reveals robust evidence for structures with deconvolved sizes of $\lesssim$0.5-1 kpc embedded within (dominant) exponential dust disks. The large-scale morphologies of the structures within some of the galaxies show clear curvature and/or clump-like structures bracketing elongated nuclear emission, suggestive of bars, star-forming rings, and spiral arms. In this interpretation, the ratio of the `ring' and `bar' radii (1.9$\pm$0.3) agrees with that measured for such features in local galaxies. These potential spiral/ring/bar structures would be consistent with the idea of tidal disturbances, with their detailed properties implying flat inner rotation curves and Toomre-unstable disks (Q<1). The inferred one-dimensional velocity dispersions ($\sigma_{\rm r}\lesssim$ 70-160 km s$^{-1}$) are marginally consistent with the limits implied if the sizes of the largest structures are comparable to the Jeans length. We create maps of the star formation rate density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) on $\sim$500 pc scales and show that the SMGs are able to sustain a given (galaxy-averaged) $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ over much larger physical scales than local (ultra-)luminous infrared galaxies. However, on 500 pc scales, they do not exceed the Eddington limit set by radiation pressure on dust. If confirmed by kinematics, the potential presence of non-axisymmetric structures would provide a means for net angular momentum loss and efficient star formation, helping to explain the very high star formation rates measured in SMGs., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, Accepted to ApJ

The origin of the high SFR observed in high-z dusty star-forming galaxies is still unknown. Large fractions of dense molecular gas might provide part of the explanation, but there are few observational constraints on the amount of dense gas in high-z systems dominated by star formation. We present the results of our ALMA program targeting dense-gas tracers (HCN(5-4), HCO+(5-4), and HNC(5-4)) in 5 strongly lensed galaxies from the SPT SMG sample. We detected two of these lines (SNR>5) in SPT-125-47 at z=2.51 and tentatively detected all three (SNR~3) in SPT0551-50 at z=3.16. Since a significant fraction of our target lines is not detected, we developed a statistical method to derive unbiased mean properties taking into account both detections and non-detections. On average, the HCN(5-4) and HCO+(5-4) luminosities of our sources are a factor of ~1.7 fainter than expected, based on the local L'HCN(5-4)-LIR relation, but this offset corresponds to only ~2 sigma. We find that both the HCO+/HCN and HNC/HCN flux ratios are compatible with unity. The first ratio is expected for PDRs while the second is consistent with PDRs or XDRs and/or mid-IR pumping of HNC. Our sources are at the high end of the local relation between the star formation efficiency, determined using the LIR/[CI] and LIR/CO ratios, and the dense gas fraction, estimated using the HCN/[CI] and HCN/CO ratios. In SPT0125-47, we found that the velocity profiles of the lines tracing dense (HCN, HCO+) and lower-density (CO, [CI]) gas are similar. In addition to these lines, we obtained one robust and one tentative detection of 13CO(4-3) and found an average I12CO(4-3)/I13CO(4-3) flux ratio of 26.1$_{-3.5}^{+4.5}$, indicating a young but not pristine interstellar medium. Massive galaxy clusters are now found as early as 3 billion years after the Big Bang, containing stars that formed at even earlier epochs. The high-redshift progenitors of these galaxy clusters, termed 'protoclusters', are identified in cosmological simulations with the highest dark matter overdensities. While their observational signatures are less well defined compared to virialized clusters with a substantial hot intra-cluster medium (ICM), protoclusters are expected to contain extremely massive galaxies that can be observed as luminous starbursts. Recent claimed detections of protoclusters hosting such starbursts do not support the kind of rapid cluster core formation expected in simulations because these structures contain only a handful of starbursting galaxies spread throughout a broad structure, with poor evidence for eventual collapse into a protocluster. Here we report that the source SPT2349-56 consists of at least 14 gas-rich galaxies all lying at z = 4.31 based on sensitive observations of carbon monoxide and ionized carbon. We demonstrate that each of these galaxies is forming stars between 50 and 1000 times faster than our own Milky Way, and all are located within a projected region only $\sim$ 130 kiloparsecs in diameter. This galaxy surface density is more than 10 times the average blank field value (integrated over all redshifts) and $>$1000 times the average field volume density. The velocity dispersion ($\sim$ 410 km s$^{-1}$) of these galaxies and enormous gas and star formation densities suggest that this system represents a galaxy cluster core at an advanced stage of formation when the Universe was only 1.4 billion years old. A comparison with other known protoclusters at high redshifts shows that SPT2349-56 is a uniquely massive and dense system that could be building one of the most massive structures in the Universe today., Comment: To appear in April 26 issue of Nature

We use ALMA observations of four sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) at $z\sim2-3$ to investigate the spatially resolved properties of the inter-stellar medium (ISM) at scales of 1--5 kpc (0.1--0.6$''$). The velocity fields of our sources, traced by the $^{12}$CO($J$=3-2) emission, are consistent with disk rotation to first order, implying average dynamical masses of $\sim$3$\times10^{11}$M$_{\odot}$ within two half-light radii. Through a Bayesian approach we investigate the uncertainties inherent to dynamically constraining total gas masses. We explore the covariance between the stellar mass-to-light ratio and CO-to-H$_{2}$ conversion factor, $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, finding values of $\alpha_{\rm CO}=1.1^{+0.8}_{-0.7}$ for dark matter fractions of 15 \%. We show that the resolved spatial distribution of the gas and dust continuum can be uncorrelated to the stellar emission, challenging energy balance assumptions in global SED fitting. Through a stacking analysis of the resolved radial profiles of the CO(3-2), stellar and dust continuum emission in SMG samples, we find that the cool molecular gas emission in these sources (radii $\sim$5--14 kpc) is clearly more extended than the rest-frame $\sim$250 $\mu$m dust continuum by a factor $>2$. We propose that assuming a constant dust-to-gas ratio, this apparent difference in sizes can be explained by temperature and optical-depth gradients alone. We present deep high resolution (0.03", 200pc) ALMA Band 7 observations covering the dust continuum and [CII] $\lambda157.7\mu$m emission in four $z\sim4.4-4.8$ sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) selected from the ALESS and AS2UDS surveys. The data show that the rest-frame 160$\mu$m (observed 345 GHz) dust emission is consistent with smooth morphologies on kpc scales for three of the sources. One source, UDS47.0, displays apparent substructure but this is also consistent with a smooth morphology, as indicated by simulations showing that smooth exponential disks can appear clumpy when observed at high angular resolution (0.03") and depth of these observations ($\sigma_{345\text{GHz}} \sim27-47\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$). The four SMGs are bright [CII] emitters, and we extract [CII] spectra from the high resolution data, and recover $\sim20-100$% of the [CII] flux and $\sim40-80$% of the dust continuum emission, compared to the previous lower resolution observations. When tapered to 0.2" resolution our maps recover $\sim80-100$% of the continuum emission, indicating that $\sim60$% of the emission is resolved out on $\sim200$pc scales. We find that the [CII] emission in high-redshift galaxies is more spatially extended than the rest-frame 160$\mu$m dust continuum by a factor of $1.6\pm0.4$. By considering the $L_{\text{[CII]}}$/$L_{\text{FIR}}$ ratio as a function of the star-formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{\text{SFR}}$) we revisit the [CII] deficit, and suggest that the decline in the $L_{\text{[CII]}}$/$L_{\text{FIR}}$ ratio as a function of $\Sigma_{\text{SFR}}$ is consistent with local processes. According to the current understanding of cosmic structure formation, the precursors of the most massive structures in the Universe began to form shortly after the Big Bang, in regions corresponding to the largest fluctuations in the cosmic density field. Observing these structures during their period of active growth and assembly - the first few hundred million years of the Universe - is challenging because it requires surveys that are sensitive enough to detect the distant galaxies that act as signposts for these structures and wide enough to capture the rarest objects. As a result, very few such objects have been detected so far. Here we report observations of a far-infrared-luminous object at redshift 6.900 (less than 800 Myr after the Big Bang) that was discovered in a wide-field survey. High-resolution imaging reveals this source to be a pair of extremely massive star-forming galaxies. The larger of these galaxies is forming stars at a rate of 2900 solar masses per year, contains 270 billion solar masses of gas and 2.5 billion solar masses of dust, and is more massive than any other known object at a redshift of more than 6. Its rapid star formation is probably triggered by its companion galaxy at a projected separation of just 8 kiloparsecs. This merging companion hosts 35 billion solar masses of stars and has a star-formation rate of 540 solar masses per year, but has an order of magnitude less gas and dust than its neighbor and physical conditions akin to those observed in lower-metallicity galaxies in the nearby Universe. These objects suggest the presence of a dark-matter halo with a mass of more than 400 billion solar masses, making it among the rarest dark-matter haloes that should exist in the Universe at this epoch., Comment: Nature, published online on 06 December 2017

Of the almost 40 star forming galaxies at z>~5 (not counting QSOs) observed in [CII] to date, nearly half are either very faint in [CII], or not detected at all, and fall well below expectations based on locally derived relations between star formation rate (SFR) and [CII] luminosity. Combining cosmological zoom simulations of galaxies with SIGAME (SImulator of GAlaxy Millimeter/submillimeter Emission) we have modeled the multi-phased interstellar medium (ISM) and its emission in [CII], [OI] and [OIII], from 30 main sequence galaxies at z~6 with star formation rates ~3-23Msun/yr, stellar masses ~(0.7-8)x10^9Msun, and metallicities ~(0.1-0.4)xZsun. The simulations are able to reproduce the aforementioned [CII]-faintness at z>5, match two of the three existing z>~5 detections of [OIII], and are furthermore roughly consistent with the [OI] and [OIII] luminosity relations with SFR observed for local starburst galaxies. We find that the [CII] emission is dominated by the diffuse ionized gas phase and molecular clouds, which on average contribute ~66% and ~27%, respectively. The molecular gas, which constitutes only ~10% of the total gas mass is thus a more efficient emitter of [CII] than the ionized gas making up ~85% of the total gas mass. A principal component analysis shows that the [CII] luminosity correlates with the star formation activity as well as average metallicity. The low metallicities of our simulations together with their low molecular gas mass fractions can account for their [CII]-faintness, and we suggest these factors may also be responsible for the [CII]-faint normal galaxies observed at these early epochs., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures. We report the discovery and constrain the physical conditions of the interstellar medium of the highest-redshift millimeter-selected dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) to date, SPT-S J031132-5823.4 (hereafter SPT0311-58), at $z=6.900 +/- 0.002$. SPT0311-58 was discovered via its 1.4mm thermal dust continuum emission in the South Pole Telescope (SPT)-SZ survey. The spectroscopic redshift was determined through an ALMA 3mm frequency scan that detected CO(6-5), CO(7-6) and [CI](2-1), and subsequently confirmed by detections of CO(3-2) with ATCA and [CII] with APEX. We constrain the properties of the ISM in SPT0311-58 with a radiative transfer analysis of the dust continuum photometry and the CO and [CI] line emission. This allows us to determine the gas content without ad hoc assumptions about gas mass scaling factors. SPT0311-58 is extremely massive, with an intrinsic gas mass of $M_{\rm gas} = 3.3 \pm 1.9 \times10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$. We present ALMA [CI]($1-0$) (rest frequency 492 GHz) observations for a sample of 13 strongly-lensed dusty star-forming galaxies originally discovered at 1.4mm in a blank-field survey by the South Pole Telescope. We compare these new data with available [CI] observations from the literature, allowing a study of the ISM properties of $\sim 30$ extreme dusty star-forming galaxies spanning a redshift range $2 < z < 5$. Using the [CI] line as a tracer of the molecular ISM, we find a mean molecular gas mass for SPT-DSFGs of $6.6 \times 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$. This is in tension with gas masses derived via low-$J$ $^{12}$CO and dust masses; bringing the estimates into accordance requires either (a) an elevated CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor for our sample of $\alpha_{\rm CO} \sim 2.5$ and a gas-to-dust ratio $\sim200$, or (b) an high carbon abundance $X_{\rm CI} \sim 7\times10^{-5}$. Using observations of a range of additional atomic and molecular lines (including [CI], [CII], and multiple transitions of CO), we use a modern Photodissociation Region code (3D-PDR) to assess the physical conditions (including the density, UV radiation field strength, and gas temperature) within the ISM of the DSFGs in our sample. We find that the ISM within our DSFGs is characterised by dense gas permeated by strong UV fields. We note that previous efforts to characterise PDR regions in DSFGs may have significantly underestimated the density of the ISM. Combined, our analysis suggests that the ISM of extreme dusty starbursts at high redshift consists of dense, carbon-rich gas not directly comparable to the ISM of starbursts in the local Universe., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures. We present high-resolution (0.16$"$) 870um Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) imaging of 16 luminous (L_IR ~ 4 x 10^12 L_sun) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) from the ALESS survey of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. This dust imaging traces the dust-obscured star formation in these z~2.5 galaxies on ~1.3 kpc scales. The emission has a median effective radius of $R_e=0.24" \pm 0.02"$, corresponding to a typical physical size of $R_{e}=1.8\pm$0.2 kpc. We derive a median S\'ersic index of $n=0.9\pm0.2$, implying that the dust emission is remarkably disk-like at the current resolution and sensitivity. We use different weighting schemes with the visibilities to search for clumps on 0.12$"$ (~1.0 kpc) scales, but we find no significant evidence for clumping in the majority of cases. Indeed, we demonstrate using simulations that the observed morphologies are generally consistent with smooth exponential disks, suggesting that caution should be exercised when identifying candidate clumps in even moderate S/N interferometric data. We compare our maps to comparable-resolution HST H$_{160}$-band images, finding that the stellar morphologies appear significantly more extended and disturbed, and suggesting that major mergers may be responsible for driving the formation of the compact dust disks we observe. The stark contrast between the obscured and unobscured morphologies may also have implications for SED fitting routines that assume the dust is co-located with the optical/near-IR continuum emission. Finally, we discuss the potential of the current bursts of star formation to transform the observed galaxy sizes and light profiles, showing that the $z\sim0$ descendants of these SMGs are expected to have stellar masses, effective radii, and gas surface densities consistent with the most compact massive (M_* ~ 1-2 x 10^11 M_sun) early-type galaxies observed locally., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, includes revisions recommended by ApJ referee

We use the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Cycle 1 to determine spectroscopic redshifts of high-redshift dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) selected by their 1.4mm continuum emission in the South Pole Telescope (SPT) survey. We present ALMA 3mm spectral scans between 84-114GHz for 15 galaxies and targeted ALMA 1mm observations for an additional eight sources. Our observations yield 30 new line detections from CO, [CI] , [NII] , H_2O and NH_3. We further present APEX [CII] and CO mid-J observations for seven sources for which only a single line was detected in spectral-scan data from ALMA Cycle 0 or Cycle 1. We combine the new observations with previously published and new mm/submm line and photometric data of the SPT-selected DSFGs to study their redshift distribution. The combined data yield 39 spectroscopic redshifts from molecular lines, a success rate of >85%. Our sample represents the largest data set of its kind today and has the highest spectroscopic completeness among all redshift surveys of high-z DSFGs. The median of the redshift distribution is z=3.9+/-0.4, and the highest-redshift source in our sample is at z=5.8. We discuss how the selection of our sources affects the redshift distribution, focusing on source brightness, selection wavelength, and strong gravitational lensing. We correct for the effect of gravitational lensing and find the redshift distribution for 1.4mm-selected sources with a median redshift of z=3.1+/-0.3. Comparing to redshift distributions selected at shorter wavelengths from the literature, we show that selection wavelength affects the shape of the redshift distribution.

We explore the recoverability of gas physical conditions with the Large Velocity Gradient (LVG) model, using the public code RADEX and the molecules HCN and CO. Examining a wide parameter range with a series of models of increasing complexity we use both grid and Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) methods to recover the input conditions, and quantify the inherent and noise induced uncertainties in the model results. We find that even with the benefit of generous assumptions the LVG models struggle to recover any parameter better than to within half a dex, although we find no evidence of systemic offsets. Examining isotopologue lines we demonstrate that it is always preferable to model the isotopologue abundance ratio as a free parameter, due to large biases introduced in all other parameters when an incorrect ratio is assumed. Finally, we explore the effects of the background radiation temperature on CO and HCN line ratios, with an emphasis on the effect of the CMB at $z>4$, and show that while the effect on the line ratios is minor, the effect on the SLED peak is significant and that the CO$(1-0)$ line luminosity to H$_2$ mass conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$) needs to be altered to account for the loss of contrast against the hotter CMB as redshift increases., Comment: 17 pages and 8 pages of appendices. 18 figures. Using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), we conducted a survey of CO J=1-0 and J=2-1 line emission towards strongly lensed high-redshift dusty star forming galaxies (DSFGs) previously discovered with the South Pole Telescope (SPT). Our sample comprises 17 sources that had CO-based spectroscopic redshifts obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX). We detect all sources with known redshifts in either CO J=1-0 or J=2-1. Twelve sources are detected in the 7-mm continuum. The derived CO luminosities imply gas masses in the range (0.5-11)x10^{10} M_sun and gas depletion timescales <200 Myr, using a CO to gas mass conversion factor alpha_CO=0.8 M_sun (K km/s pc^2)^{-1}. Combining the CO luminosities and dust masses, along with a fixed gas-to-dust ratio, we derive alpha_CO factors in the range 0.4-1.8, similar to what is found in other starbursting systems. We find small scatter in alpha_CO values within the sample, even though inherent variations in the spatial distribution of dust and gas in individual cases could bias the dust-based alpha_CO estimates. We find that lensing magnification factors based on the CO linewidth to luminosity relation (mu_CO) are highly unreliable, but particularly when mu<5. Finally, comparison of the gas and dynamical masses suggest that the average molecular gas fraction stays relatively constant at z=2-5 in the SPT DSFG sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present ALMA detections of the [NII] 205$\mu$m and CO(12-11) emission lines, and the tentative detection of [CI] $^3$P$_1$ - $^3$P$_0$ for the strongly lensed ($\mu$=5.7$\pm$0.5) dusty, star-forming galaxy SPT-S J213242-5802.9 (hereafter SPT2132-58) at z=4.77. The [NII] and CO(12-11) lines are detected at 11.5 and 8.5 $\sigma$ level, respectively, by our band-6 observations. The [CI] line is detected at 3.2 $\sigma$ after a re-analysis of existing band-3 data. The [CI] luminosity implies a gas mass of 3.8$\pm$1.2$\times$10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$, and consequently a very short depletion timescale of 34$\pm$13 Myr and a CO-luminosity-to-gas-mass conversion factor $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ of 1.0$\pm$0.3 M$_\odot$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{2}$)$^{-1}$. SPT2132-58 is an extreme starburst with an intrinsic star formation rate of 1100$\pm$200 M$_\odot$/yr. We find a [CII]/[NII] ratio of 26$\pm$7, which is the highest reported at z$>$4. This suggests that SPT2132-58 hosts an evolved interstellar medium (0.5 Z$_\odot$

We probe star formation in the environments of massive $\sim10^{13}\,M_{\odot}$ dark matter halos at redshifts of $z$$\sim$$1$. This star formation is linked to a sub-millimetre clustering signal which we detect in maps of the Planck High Frequency Instrument that are stacked at the positions of a sample of high-redshift ($z$$>$$2$) strongly-lensed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) selected from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) 2500 deg$^2$ survey. The clustering signal has sub-millimetre colours which are consistent with the mean redshift of the foreground lensing halos ($z$$\sim$$1$). We report a mean excess of star formation rate (SFR) compared to the field, of $(2700\pm700)\,M_{\odot}\,{yr}^{-1}$ from all galaxies contributing to this clustering signal within a radius of 3.5' from the SPT DSFGs. The magnitude of the Planck excess is in broad agreement with predictions of a current model of the cosmic infrared background. The model predicts that 80$\%$ of the excess emission measured by Planck originates from galaxies lying in the neighbouring halos of the lensing halo. Using Herschel maps of the same fields, we find a clear excess, relative to the field, of individual sources which contribute to the Planck excess. The mean excess SFR compared to the field is measured to be ($370\pm40)$$\,M_{\odot}\,{yr}^{-1}$ per resolved, clustered source. Our findings suggest that the environments around these massive $z$$\sim$$1$ lensing halos host intense star formation out to about $2\,$Mpc. To understand cosmic mass assembly in the Universe at early epochs, we primarily rely on measurements of stellar mass and star formation rate of distant galaxies. In this paper, we present stellar masses and star formation rates of six high-redshift ($2.8\leq z \leq 5.7$) dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) that are strongly gravitationally lensed by foreground galaxies. These sources were first discovered by the South Pole Telescope (SPT) at millimeter wavelengths and all have spectroscopic redshifts and robust lens models derived from ALMA observations. We have conducted follow-up observations, obtaining multi-wavelength imaging data, using {\it HST}, {\it Spitzer}, {\it Herschel} and the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX). We use the high-resolution {\it HST}/WFC3 images to disentangle the background source from the foreground lens in {\it Spitzer}/IRAC data. The detections and upper limits provide important constraints on the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for these DSFGs, yielding stellar masses, IR luminosities, and star formation rates (SFRs). The SED fits of six SPT sources show that the intrinsic stellar masses span a range more than one order of magnitude with a median value $\sim$ 5 $\times 10^{10}M_{\Sun}$. The intrinsic IR luminosities range from 4$\times 10^{12}L_{\Sun}$ to 4$\times 10^{13}L_{\Sun}$. They all have prodigious intrinsic star formation rates of 510 to 4800 $M_{\Sun} {\rm yr}^{-1}$. Compared to the star-forming main sequence (MS), these six DSFGs have specific SFRs that all lie above the MS, including two galaxies that are a factor of 10 higher than the MS. We present the first observations of H$^{13}$CN$(1-0)$, H$^{13}$CO$^+(1-0)$ and SiO$(2-1)$ in NGC\,6240, obtained with the IRAM PdBI. Combining a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) code with Large Velocity Gradient (LVG) modelling, and with additional data from the literature, we simultaneously fit three gas phases and six molecular species to constrain the physical condition of the molecular gas, including mass$-$luminosity conversion factors. We find $\sim10^{10}M_\odot$ of dense molecular gas in cold, dense clouds ($T_{\rm k}\sim10$\,K, $n_{{\rm H}_2}\sim10^6$\,cm$^{-3}$) with a volume filling factor $<0.002$, embedded in a shock heated molecular medium ($T_{\rm k}\sim2000$\,K, $n_{{\rm H}_2}\sim10^{3.6}$\,cm$^{-3}$), both surrounded by an extended diffuse phase ($T_{\rm k}\sim200$\,K, $n_{{\rm H}_2}\sim10^{2.5}$\,cm$^{-3}$). We derive a global $\alpha_{\rm CO}=1.5^{7.1}_{1.1}$ with gas masses $\log_{10}\left(M / [M_\odot]\right)=10.1_{10.0}^{10.8}$, dominated by the dense gas. We also find $\alpha_{\rm HCN} = 32^{89}_{13}$, which traces the cold, dense gas. The [$^{12}$C]/[$^{13}$C] ratio is only slightly elevated ($98^{230}_{65}$), contrary to the very high [CO]/[$^{13}$CO] ratio (300-500) reported in the literature.
