We investigate the transport properties of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) by comparing the role of elastic and inelastic (radiative) processes in the sQGP medium within the effective dynamical quasi-particle model (DQPM), constructed for the description of non-perturbative quantum chromodynamic (QCD) phenomena of the sQGP in line with the lattice QCD (lQCD) equation of state. First, we present the results for the energy and temperature dependencies of the total radiative cross sections and compare them to the corresponding elastic cross sections. Second, we perform a calculation of the interaction rate and relaxation time of radiative versus elastic scatterings. Finally, we obtain the jet transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ and investigate its dependence on the choice of the strong coupling in thermal, jet parton and radiative vertices.

The spectroscopic redshift measurement of BL Lac, a class of blazar, is challenging because its spectrum has no or weak emission lines ($\leqslant5\AA$). We estimate the redshift by the photometric dropout technique for a sample of 64 blazars (59 BL Lacs and five blazar candidates of uncertainty type). Two telescopes are utilized to observe the sample: the {\it Swift} space telescope observes sources in $uvw2,\ uvm2,\ uvw1,\ u,\ b,\ v$ filters, while the ground-based telescopes SARA-CT/RM observed sources in $g',\ r,' \ i',\ z'$ filters. The photometric data are obtained using the {\it photozpy} package. We fit the photometric data by the LePhare package and report four new high-$z$ ($z>1.3$) BL Lacs at $2.03^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$, $1.84^{+0.10}_{-0.03}$, $2.04^{+0.16}_{-0.14}$, $2.93^{+0.01}_{-0.04}$ as well as upper limits for 50 sources. The work increased the number of high-$z$ BL Lacs found by this method up to 23. For economic and efficiency reasons, blended acquisition of seismic data is becoming more and more commonplace. Seismic deblending methods are always computationally demanding and normally consist of multiple processing steps. Besides, the parameter setting is not always trivial. Machine learning-based processing has the potential to significantly reduce processing time and to change the way seismic deblending is carried out. We present a data-driven deep learning-based method for fast and efficient seismic deblending. The blended data are sorted from the common source to the common channel domain to transform the character of the blending noise from coherent events to incoherent distributions. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is designed according to the special character of seismic data, and performs deblending with comparable results to those obtained with conventional industry deblending algorithms. To ensure authenticity, the blending was done numerically and only field seismic data were employed, including more than 20000 training examples. After training and validation of the network, seismic deblending can be performed in near real time. Experiments also show that the initial signal to noise ratio (SNR) is the major factor controlling the quality of the final deblended result. The network is also demonstrated to be robust and adaptive by using the trained model to firstly deblend a new data set from a different geological area with a slightly different delay time setting, and secondly deblend shots with blending noise in the top part of the data.

Given an instance, a multi-event survival model predicts the time until that instance experiences each of several different events. These events are not mutually exclusive and there are often statistical dependencies between them. There are relatively few multi-event survival results, most focusing on producing a simple risk score, rather than the time-to-event itself. To overcome these issues, we introduce MENSA, a novel, deep learning approach for multi-event survival analysis that can jointly learn representations of the input covariates and the dependence structure between events. As a practical motivation for multi-event survival analysis, we consider the problem of predicting the time until a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) loses various physical functions, i.e., the ability to speak, swallow, write, or walk. When estimating when a patient is no longer able to swallow, our approach achieves an L1-Margin loss of 278.8 days, compared to 355.2 days when modeling each event separately. In addition, we also evaluate our approach in single-event and competing risk scenarios by modeling the censoring and event distributions as equal contributing factors in the optimization process, and show that our approach performs well across multiple benchmark datasets. Marine seismic interference noise occurs when energy from nearby marine seismic source vessels is recorded during a seismic survey. Such noise tends to be well preserved over large distances and cause coherent artifacts in the recorded data. Over the years, the industry has developed various denoising techniques for seismic interference removal, but although well performing they are still time-consuming in use. Machine-learning based processing represents an alternative approach, which may significantly improve the computational efficiency. In case of conventional images, autoencoders are frequently employed for denoising purposes. However, due to the special characteristics of seismic data as well as the noise, autoencoders failed in the case of marine seismic interference noise. We therefore propose the use of a customized U-Net design with element-wise summation as part of the skip-connection blocks to handle the vanishing gradient problem and to ensure information fusion between high- and low-level features. To secure a realistic study, only seismic field data were employed, including 25000 training examples. The customized U-Net was found to perform well leaving only minor residuals, except for the case when seismic interference noise comes from the side. We further demonstrate that such noise can be treated by slightly increasing the depth of our network. Although our customized U-Net does not outperform a standard commercial algorithm in quality, it can (after proper training) read and process one single shot gather in approximately 0.02s. This is significantly faster than any existing industry denoising algorithm. In addition, the proposed network processes shot gathers in a sequential order, which is an advantage compared with industry algorithms that typically require a multi-shot input to break the coherency of the noise.

Is there a way to design powerful AI systems based on machine learning methods that would satisfy probabilistic safety guarantees? With the long-term goal of obtaining a probabilistic guarantee that would apply in every context, we consider estimating a context-dependent bound on the probability of violating a given safety specification. Such a risk evaluation would need to be performed at run-time to provide a guardrail against dangerous actions of an AI. Noting that different plausible hypotheses about the world could produce very different outcomes, and because we do not know which one is right, we derive bounds on the safety violation probability predicted under the true but unknown hypothesis. Such bounds could be used to reject potentially dangerous actions. Our main results involve searching for cautious but plausible hypotheses, obtained by a maximization that involves Bayesian posteriors over hypotheses. We consider two forms of this result, in the iid case and in the non-iid case, and conclude with open problems towards turning such theoretical results into practical AI guardrails.

Local electronic-structure methods in quantum chemistry operate on the ability to compress electron correlations more efficiently in a basis of spatially localized molecular orbitals than in a parent set of canonical orbitals. However, many typical choices of localized orbitals tend to be related by selected, near-exact symmetry operations whenever a molecule belongs to a point group, a feature which remains largely unexploited in most local correlation methods. The present Letter demonstrates how to leverage a recent unitary protocol for enforcing symmetry properties among localized orbitals to yield a high-accuracy estimate of the exact ground-state correlation energy of benzene ($D_{6h}$) in correlation-consistent polarized basis sets of both double- and triple-$\zeta$ quality. The European Union (EU) is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This requires capturing CO2, eventually transporting it to different regions, to then either convert it into valuable products or sequester it underground. While the target is set for the EU as a whole, a significant part of the governance and strategy remains in the individual member states. Using the networked sector-coupled model PyPSA-Eur, we explored the impacts of imposing net-zero emissions globally for the entire EU versus imposing carbon neutrality for each country. Under a global CO2 target, some countries remain net CO2 emitters, while others become net CO2 absorbers. Forcing net-zero emissions in every country increases system cost by 1.4%, demands varied CO2 prices, and triggers higher investment in direct air capture and renewable capacities. In both scenarios, a significant portion of the captured CO2 is transported across Europe either directly in CO2 pipelines or indirectly via solid biomass or synthetic methane gas, methanol, and oil.

Understanding the collective quantum dynamics of nonequilibrium many-body systems is an outstanding challenge in quantum science. In particular, dynamics driven by quantum fluctuations are important for the formation of exotic quantum phases of matter \cite{altman2023quantum}, fundamental high-energy processes \cite{bauer2023highenergy}, quantum metrology \cite{degen2017sensing, li2023scrambling}, and quantum algorithms \cite{ebadi2022quantum}. Here, we use a programmable quantum simulator based on Rydberg atom arrays to experimentally study collective dynamics across a (2+1)D Ising quantum phase transition. After crossing the quantum critical point, we observe a gradual growth of correlations through coarsening of antiferromagnetically ordered domains~\cite{Samajdar2024}. By deterministically preparing and following the evolution of ordered domains, we show that the coarsening is driven by the curvature of domain boundaries, and find that the dynamics accelerate with proximity to the quantum critical point. We quantitatively explore these phenomena and further observe long-lived oscillations of the order parameter, corresponding to an amplitude (Higgs) mode \cite{pekker2015amplitude}. We present a wide-reaching revamp of the generalized many-body expanded full configuration interaction (MBE-FCI) method. First, we outline how to automatize the selection of reference active spaces whereby the inherent bias introduced through a manual identification is reduced, also within the context of traditional complete active space methods. Second, we allow for the use of compact orbital clusters as expansion objects, which works to circumvent the unfavorable scaling with the number of orbitals included in the space complementary to the reference orbitals. Finally, we present a new algorithm for ensuring that many-body expansions can be efficiently terminated while conservatively accounting for resulting errors. These developments are all tested on a variety of molecular systems and different orbital representations to illustrate the abilities of our algorithm to produce correlation energies within predetermined error bounds, significantly broadening the overall applicability of the MBE-FCI method., Comment: 29+7 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. Discrimination and calibration represent two important properties of survival analysis, with the former assessing the model's ability to accurately rank subjects and the latter evaluating the alignment of predicted outcomes with actual events. With their distinct nature, it is hard for survival models to simultaneously optimize both of them especially as many previous results found improving calibration tends to diminish discrimination performance. This paper introduces a novel approach utilizing conformal regression that can improve a model's calibration without degrading discrimination. We provide theoretical guarantees for the above claim, and rigorously validate the efficiency of our approach across 11 real-world datasets, showcasing its practical applicability and robustness in diverse scenarios., Comment: Accepted to ICML 2024; 37 pages, 19 figures

Purpose: Software modelling and Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) is traditionally studied from a technical perspective. However, one of the core motivations behind the use of software models is inherently human-centred. Models aim to enable practitioners to communicate about software designs, make software understandable, or make software easier to write through domain-specific modelling languages. Several recent studies challenge the idea that these aims can always be reached and indicate that human factors play a role in the success of MDE. However, there is an under-representation of research focusing on human factors in modelling. Methods: During a GI-Dagstuhl seminar, topics related to human factors in modelling were discussed by 26 expert participants from research and industry. Results: In breakout groups, five topics were covered in depth, namely modelling human aspects, factors of modeller experience, diversity and inclusion in MDE, collaboration and MDE, and teaching human-aware MDE. Conclusion: We summarise our insights gained during the discussions on the five topics. We formulate research goals, questions, and propositions that support directing future initiatives towards an MDE community that is aware of and supportive of human factors and values.

This research paper explores ways to apply Federated Learning (FL) and Differential Privacy (DP) techniques to population-scale Electrocardiogram (ECG) data. The study learns a multi-label ECG classification model using FL and DP based on 1,565,849 ECG tracings from 7 hospitals in Alberta, Canada. The FL approach allowed collaborative model training without sharing raw data between hospitals while building robust ECG classification models for diagnosing various cardiac conditions. These accurate ECG classification models can facilitate the diagnoses while preserving patient confidentiality using FL and DP techniques. Our results show that the performance achieved using our implementation of the FL approach is comparable to that of the pooled approach, where the model is trained over the aggregating data from all hospitals. Furthermore, our findings suggest that hospitals with limited ECGs for training can benefit from adopting the FL model compared to single-site training. In addition, this study showcases the trade-off between model performance and data privacy by employing DP during model training. Strongly correlated materials feature multiple electronic orbitals which are crucial to accurately understand their many-body properties, from cuprate materials to twisted bilayer graphene. In such multi-band models, quantum interference can lead to dispersionless bands whose large degeneracy gives rise to itinerant magnetism even with weak interactions. Here, we report on signatures of a ferrimagnetic state realized in a Lieb lattice at half-filling, characterized by antialigned magnetic moments with antiferromagnetic correlations, concomitant with a finite spin polarization. We demonstrate its robustness when increasing repulsive interactions from the non-interacting to the Heisenberg regime, and study its emergence when continuously tuning the lattice unit cell from a square to a Lieb geometry. Our work paves the way towards exploring exotic phases in related multi-orbital models such as quantum spin liquids in kagome lattices and heavy fermion behavior in Kondo models., Comment: 7+8 pages, 4+11 figures

The study of transient and variable events, including novae, active galactic nuclei, and black hole binaries, has historically been a fruitful path for elucidating the evolutionary mechanisms of our universe. The study of such events in the millimeter and submillimeter is, however, still in its infancy. Submillimeter observations probe a variety of materials, such as optically thick dust, which are hard to study in other wavelengths. Submillimeter observations are sensitive to a number of emission mechanisms, from the aforementioned cold dust, to hot free-free emission, and synchrotron emission from energetic particles. Study of these phenomena has been hampered by a lack of prompt, high sensitivity submillimeter follow-up, as well as by a lack of high-sky-coverage submillimeter surveys. In this paper, we describe how the proposed Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST) could fill in these gaps in our understanding of the transient universe. We discuss a number of science cases that would benefit from AtLAST observations, and detail how AtLAST is uniquely suited to contributing to them. In particular, AtLAST's large field of view will enable serendipitous detections of transient events, while its anticipated ability to get on source quickly and observe simultaneously in multiple bands make it also ideally suited for transient follow-up. We make theoretical predictions for the instrumental and observatory properties required to significantly contribute to these science cases, and compare them to the projected AtLAST capabilities. Finally, we consider the unique ways in which transient science cases constrain the observational strategies of AtLAST, and make prescriptions for how AtLAST should observe in order to maximize its transient science output without impinging on other science cases., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

High-resolution fluorescence imaging of ultracold atoms and molecules is paramount to performing quantum simulation and computation in optical lattices and optical tweezers. Imaging durations in these experiments typically range from a millisecond to a second, which can significantly limit the cycle time. In this work, we present fast, 2.4 us single-atom imaging in lattices, with 99.4% fidelity. Additionally, we resolve lattice sites spaced within the diffraction limit by using accordion lattices to increase the atom spacing before imaging. This overcomes the challenge of imaging small-spacing lattices and enables the study of extended Hubbard models using magnetic atoms. We also demonstrate number-resolved imaging without parity projection, which will facilitate experiments such as the exploration of high-filling phases in the extended Bose-Hubbard models, multi-band or SU(N) Fermi-Hubbard models, and quantum link models.

Forecasting the occurrence and absence of novel disease outbreaks is essential for disease management. Here, we develop a general model, with no real-world training data, that accurately forecasts outbreaks and non-outbreaks. We propose a novel framework, using a feature-based time series classification method to forecast outbreaks and non-outbreaks. We tested our methods on synthetic data from a Susceptible-Infected-Recovered model for slowly changing, noisy disease dynamics. Outbreak sequences give a transcritical bifurcation within a specified future time window, whereas non-outbreak (null bifurcation) sequences do not. We identified incipient differences in time series of infectives leading to future outbreaks and non-outbreaks. These differences are reflected in 22 statistical features and 5 early warning signal indicators. Classifier performance, given by the area under the receiver-operating curve, ranged from 0.99 for large expanding windows of training data to 0.7 for small rolling windows. Real-world performances of classifiers were tested on two empirical datasets, COVID-19 data from Singapore and SARS data from Hong Kong, with two classifiers exhibiting high accuracy. In summary, we showed that there are statistical features that distinguish outbreak and non-outbreak sequences long before outbreaks occur. We could detect these differences in synthetic and real-world data sets, well before potential outbreaks occur.

We report on adiabatic state preparation in the one-dimensional quantum Ising model using ultracold bosons in a tilted optical lattice. We prepare many-body ground states of controllable system sizes and observe enhanced fluctuations around the transition between paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states, marking the precursor of quantum critical behavior. Furthermore, we find evidence for superpositions of domain walls and study their effect on the many-body ground state by measuring the populations of each spin configuration across the transition. In computational chemistry, accurately predicting molecular configurations that exhibit specific properties remains a critical challenge. Its intricacies become especially evident in the study of molecular aggregates, where the light-induced functionality is tied to highly structure-dependent electronic couplings between molecules. Here, we present an efficient strategy for the targeted screening of the structural space employing a "functionality optimization" technique, in which a chosen descriptor, constrained by the ground state energy expression, is optimized. The chosen algorithmic differentiation (AD) framework allows to automatically obtain gradients without its tedious implementation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by identifying Perylene Bisiimide (PBI) dimer motifs with enhanced SF rate. Our findings reveal that certain structural modifications of the PBI monomer, such as helical twisting and bending, as well as slipped-rotated packing arrangements, can significantly increase the SF rate.

The process of identifying a compound from its mass spectrum is a critical step in the analysis of complex mixtures. Typical solutions for the mass spectrum to compound (MS2C) problem involve matching the unknown spectrum against a library of known spectrum-molecule pairs, an approach that is limited by incomplete library coverage. Compound to mass spectrum (C2MS) models can improve retrieval rates by augmenting real libraries with predicted spectra. Unfortunately, many existing C2MS models suffer from problems with prediction resolution, scalability, or interpretability. We develop a new probabilistic method for C2MS prediction, FraGNNet, that can efficiently and accurately predict high-resolution spectra. FraGNNet uses a structured latent space to provide insight into the underlying processes that define the spectrum. Large language models (LLMs) have gained widespread interest due to their ability to process human language and perform tasks on which they have not been explicitly trained. This is relevant for the chemical sciences, which face the problem of small and diverse datasets that are frequently in the form of text. LLMs have shown promise in addressing these issues and are increasingly being harnessed to predict chemical properties, optimize reactions, and even design and conduct experiments autonomously. However, we still have only a very limited systematic understanding of the chemical reasoning capabilities of LLMs, which would be required to improve models and mitigate potential harms. Here, we introduce "ChemBench," an automated framework designed to rigorously evaluate the chemical knowledge and reasoning abilities of state-of-the-art LLMs against the expertise of human chemists. We curated more than 7,000 question-answer pairs for a wide array of subfields of the chemical sciences, evaluated leading open and closed-source LLMs, and found that the best models outperformed the best human chemists in our study on average. The models, however, struggle with some chemical reasoning tasks that are easy for human experts and provide overconfident, misleading predictions, such as about chemicals' safety profiles. These findings underscore the dual reality that, although LLMs demonstrate remarkable proficiency in chemical tasks, further research is critical to enhancing their safety and utility in chemical sciences. Our findings also indicate a need for adaptations to chemistry curricula and highlight the importance of continuing to develop evaluation frameworks to improve safe and useful LLMs.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated exceptional capabilities in various natural language tasks, often achieving performances that surpass those of humans. Despite these advancements, the domain of mathematics presents a distinctive challenge, primarily due to its specialized structure and the precision it demands. In this study, we adopted a two-step approach for investigating the proficiency of LLMs in answering mathematical questions. First, we employ the most effective LLMs, as identified by their performance on math question-answer benchmarks, to generate answers to 78 questions from the Math Stack Exchange (MSE). Second, a case analysis is conducted on the LLM that showed the highest performance, focusing on the quality and accuracy of its answers through manual evaluation. We found that GPT-4 performs best (nDCG of 0.48 and P@10 of 0.37) amongst existing LLMs fine-tuned for answering mathematics questions and outperforms the current best approach on ArqMATH3 Task1, considering P@10. Our Case analysis indicates that while the GPT-4 can generate relevant responses in certain instances, it does not consistently answer all questions accurately. This paper explores the current limitations of LLMs in navigating complex mathematical problem-solving. Through case analysis, we shed light on the gaps in LLM capabilities within mathematics, thereby setting the stage for future research and advancements in AI-driven mathematical reasoning. We present a novel implementation of the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method that makes use of the many-body expanded full configuration interaction (MBE-FCI) method to incrementally approximate electronic structures within large active spaces. On the basis of a hybrid first-order algorithm employing both Super-CI and quasi-Newton strategies for the optimization of molecular orbitals, we demonstrate both computational efficacy and high accuracy of the resulting MBE-CASSCF method. We assess the performance of our implementation on a set of established numerical tests before applying MBE-CASSCF in the investigation of the triplet-quintet spin gap of iron(II) porphyrin with active spaces as large as 50 electrons in 50 orbitals., Comment: 27+8 pages, 6 figures. The timely detection of disease outbreaks through reliable early warning signals (EWSs) is indispensable for effective public health mitigation strategies. Nevertheless, the intricate dynamics of real-world disease spread, often influenced by diverse sources of noise and limited data in the early stages of outbreaks, pose a significant challenge in developing reliable EWSs, as the performance of existing indicators varies with extrinsic and intrinsic noises. Here, we address the challenge of modeling disease when the measurements are corrupted by additive white noise, multiplicative environmental noise, and demographic noise into a standard epidemic mathematical model. To navigate the complexities introduced by these noise sources, we employ a deep learning algorithm that provides EWS in infectious disease outbreak by training on noise-induced disease-spreading models. The indicator's effectiveness is demonstrated through its application to real-world COVID-19 cases in Edmonton and simulated time series derived from diverse disease spread models affected by noise. Notably, the indicator captures an impending transition in a time series of disease outbreaks and outperforms existing indicators. This study contributes to advancing early warning capabilities by addressing the intricate dynamics inherent in real-world disease spread, presenting a promising avenue for enhancing public health preparedness and response efforts.

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), or more generally data-driven algorithms, has become ubiquitous in today's society. Yet, in many cases and especially when stakes are high, humans still make final decisions. The critical question, therefore, is whether AI helps humans make better decisions compared to a human-alone or AI-alone system. We introduce a new methodological framework to experimentally answer this question without additional assumptions. We measure a decision maker's ability to make correct decisions using standard classification metrics based on the baseline potential outcome. We consider a single-blinded experimental design, in which the provision of AI-generated recommendations is randomized across cases with humans making final decisions. Under this experimental design, we show how to compare the performance of three alternative decision-making systems -- human-alone, human-with-AI, and AI-alone. We also show when to provide a human-decision maker with AI recommendations and when they should follow such recommendations. We apply the proposed methodology to the data from our own randomized controlled trial of a pretrial risk assessment instrument. We find that the risk assessment recommendations do not improve the classification accuracy of a judge's decision to impose cash bail. Our analysis also shows that the risk assessment-alone decisions generally perform worse than human decisions with or without algorithmic assistance.

Summarization for scientific text has shown significant benefits both for the research community and human society. Given the fact that the nature of scientific text is distinctive and the input of the multi-document summarization task is substantially long, the task requires sufficient embedding generation and text truncation without losing important information. To tackle these issues, in this paper, we propose SKT5SciSumm - a hybrid framework for multi-document scientific summarization (MDSS). We leverage the Sentence-Transformer version of Scientific Paper Embeddings using Citation-Informed Transformers (SPECTER) to encode and represent textual sentences, allowing for efficient extractive summarization using k-means clustering. We employ the T5 family of models to generate abstractive summaries using extracted sentences. SKT5SciSumm achieves state-of-the-art performance on the Multi-XScience dataset. Through extensive experiments and evaluation, we showcase the benefits of our model by using less complicated models to achieve remarkable results, thereby highlighting its potential in advancing the field of multi-document summarization for scientific text.

Media bias detection poses a complex, multifaceted problem traditionally tackled using single-task models and small in-domain datasets, consequently lacking generalizability. To address this, we introduce MAGPIE, the first large-scale multi-task pre-training approach explicitly tailored for media bias detection. To enable pre-training at scale, we present Large Bias Mixture (LBM), a compilation of 59 bias-related tasks. MAGPIE outperforms previous approaches in media bias detection on the Bias Annotation By Experts (BABE) dataset, with a relative improvement of 3.3% F1-score. MAGPIE also performs better than previous models on 5 out of 8 tasks in the Media Bias Identification Benchmark (MBIB). Using a RoBERTa encoder, MAGPIE needs only 15% of finetuning steps compared to single-task approaches. Our evaluation shows, for instance, that tasks like sentiment and emotionality boost all learning, all tasks enhance fake news detection, and scaling tasks leads to the best results. MAGPIE confirms that MTL is a promising approach for addressing media bias detection, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of existing models. Furthermore, LBM is the first available resource collection focused on media bias MTL.

We present exact relations between the diffusion coefficients or conductivities, $\kappa_{qq'}/T = \sigma_{qq'}$, of strongly-interacting matter. We show that once the diagonal entries are known in two different charge representations, the off-diagonal coefficients are functions of the diagonal entries once isospin symmetry applies. As an important example, we infer the conductivities on the basis of available calculations from lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) and argue that these computations suffer under the approximations made to achieve them. Further, we argue that the representation of the conductivities w.r.t. to the conserved quark-flavors may deliver more insight into the chemical composition of strongly-interacting matter., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPSs), such as automated car manufacturing plants, execute a configurable sequence of production steps to manufacture products from a product portfolio. In CPPS engineering, domain experts start with manually determining feasible production step sequences and resources based on implicit knowledge. This process is hard to reproduce and highly inefficient. In this paper, we present the Extended Iterative Process Sequence Exploration (eIPSE) approach to derive variability models for products, processes, and resources from a domain-specific description. To automate the integrated exploration and configuration process for a CPPS, we provide a toolchain which automatically reduces the configuration space and allows to generate CPPS artifacts, such as control code for resources. We evaluate the approach with four real-world use cases, including the generation of control code artifacts, and an observational user study to collect feedback from engineers with different backgrounds. We extend the investigation on jet transport coefficients within the effective Dynamical QuasiParticle Model (DQPM) -- constructed for the description of non-perturbative QCD phenomena of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) in line with the lattice QCD equation-of-state -- by accounting for inelastic $2\to 3$ reactions with gluon radiation additionally to the elastic scattering of partons. The elastic and inelastic reactions are calculated explicitly within leading-order Feynman diagrams with effective propagators and vertices from the DQPM by accounting for all channels and their interferences. We present the results for the jet transport coefficients such as the transverse momentum transfer squared $\hat{q}$ per unit length as well as the energy loss $\Delta E = dE/dx$ per unit length in the sQGP and investigate their dependence on the temperature $T$ and momentum of the jet parton depending on the choice of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$ in thermal, jet parton and radiative vertices. For the latter we consider different scenarios used in the literature and find a very strong dependence of $\hat q$ and $\Delta E$ on the choice of $\alpha_s$. Moreover, we explore the relation of $\hat{q}/T^3$ to the ratio of specific shear viscosity to entropy density $\eta/s$ and show that the ratio $T^3/\hat{q}$ to $\eta/s$ has a strong $T$ dependence -- especially when approaching to $T_c$ -- on the choice of $\alpha_s$ in scattering vertices.

Plagiarism is a pressing concern, even more so with the availability of large language models. Existing plagiarism detection systems reliably find copied and moderately reworded text but fail for idea plagiarism, especially in mathematical science, which heavily uses formal mathematical notation. We make two contributions. First, we establish a taxonomy of mathematical content reuse by annotating potentially plagiarised 122 scientific document pairs. Second, we analyze the best-performing approaches to detect plagiarism and mathematical content similarity on the newly established taxonomy. We found that the best-performing methods for plagiarism and math content similarity achieve an overall detection score (PlagDet) of 0.06 and 0.16, respectively. The best-performing methods failed to detect most cases from all seven newly established math similarity types. Outlined contributions will benefit research in plagiarism detection systems, recommender systems, question-answering systems, and search engines. Computational models are an essential tool for the design, characterization, and discovery of novel materials. Hard computational tasks in materials science stretch the limits of existing high-performance supercomputing centers, consuming much of their simulation, analysis, and data resources. Quantum computing, on the other hand, is an emerging technology with the potential to accelerate many of the computational tasks needed for materials science. In order to do that, the quantum technology must interact with conventional high-performance computing in several ways: approximate results validation, identification of hard problems, and synergies in quantum-centric supercomputing. Suppressing errors is the central challenge for useful quantum computing, requiring quantum error correction for large-scale processing. However, the overhead in the realization of error-corrected ``logical'' qubits, where information is encoded across many physical qubits for redundancy, poses significant challenges to large-scale logical quantum computing. Here we report the realization of a programmable quantum processor based on encoded logical qubits operating with up to 280 physical qubits. Utilizing logical-level control and a zoned architecture in reconfigurable neutral atom arrays, our system combines high two-qubit gate fidelities, arbitrary connectivity, as well as fully programmable single-qubit rotations and mid-circuit readout. Operating this logical processor with various types of encodings, we demonstrate improvement of a two-qubit logic gate by scaling surface code distance from d=3 to d=7, preparation of color code qubits with break-even fidelities, fault-tolerant creation of logical GHZ states and feedforward entanglement teleportation, as well as operation of 40 color code qubits. Finally, using three-dimensional [[8,3,2]] code blocks, we realize computationally complex sampling circuits with up to 48 logical qubits entangled with hypercube connectivity with 228 logical two-qubit gates and 48 logical CCZ gates. We find that this logical encoding substantially improves algorithmic performance with error detection, outperforming physical qubit fidelities at both cross-entropy benchmarking and quantum simulations of fast scrambling.
