Background Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a multifaceted, x-linked, neurodegenerative disorder that affect patients through a variety of physical, emotional, social, and other disease-specific factors that collectively contribute to disease burden. Adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN) is one of the most frequent clinical manifestations and a subset of ALD. To facilitate clinical care and research, it is important to identify which symptoms are most common and relevant to individuals with ALD and AMN. Methods We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews and an international cross-sectional study to determine the most prevalent and important symptoms of ALD and AMN. Our studies included adult participants with a diagnosis of ALD and AMN who were recruited from national and international patient registries. Responses were categorized by age, sex, functional status, and other demographic and clinical features. Results Seventeen individuals with ALD and AMN participated in qualitative interviews, providing 1,709 direct quotes regarding their symptomatic burden. One hundred and nine individuals participated in the cross sectional survey study, which inquired about 182 unique symptoms representing 24 distinct symptomatic themes. The symptomatic themes with the highest prevalence in the ALD and AMN sample cohort were problems with balance (90.9%), limitations with mobility or walking (87.3%), fatigue (86.4%), and leg weakness (86.4%). The symptomatic themes with the highest impact scores (on a 0–4 scale with 4 being the most severe) were trouble getting around (2.35), leg weakness (2.25), and problems with balance (2.21). A higher prevalence of symptomatic themes was associated with functional ability, employment disruption, and speech status. Conclusions There are many patient-relevant symptoms and themes that contribute to disease burden in individuals with ALD and AMN. These symptoms, identified by those diagnosed with ALD and AMN, present key targets for further research and therapeutic development.

Defective and perfect sites naturally exist within electronic semiconductors, and considerable efforts to reduce defects to improve the performance of electronic devices, especially in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (ABX(3)), are undertaken. Herein, foldable hole-transporting materials (HTMs) are developed, and they extend the wavefunctions of A-site cations of perovskite, which, as hybridized electronic states, link the trap states (defective site) and valence band edge (perfect site) between the naturally defective and perfect sites of the perovskite surface, finally converting the discrete trap states of the perovskite as the continuous valence band to reduce trap recombination. Tailoring the foldability of the HTMs tunes the wavefunctions between defective and perfect surface sites, allowing the power conversion efficiency of a small cell to reach 23.22% and that of a mini-module (6.5 x 7 cm, active area = 30.24 cm(2)) to reach as high as 21.71% with a fill factor of 81%, the highest value reported for non-spiro-OMeTAD-based perovskite solar modules.

Although the published values of power conversion efficiency (PCE) have increased continuously in recent years for perovskite solar cells (PSCs), improvements in the stability and performance of PSCs with conventional TiO2 or SnO2 electron transport layers (ETLs) remain limited by the presence of nonideal interface defects and low ultraviolet (UV) absorption. In this study, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-5-sulfonate-benzophenone (SBP), an inexpensive water-soluble sunscreen raw material, was incorporated into the SnO2 ETL as a UV filter. It was found that the exposure of perovskite to UV light was significantly reduced, and, more importantly, the carbonyl and sulfonic acid groups in the SBP influenced both the perovskite crystallization process and the passivation of defects in the ETL/perovskite film interface. As a result, the PCE of SBP-based devices was increased to 22.54% from 20.78% of the control sample, with a concomitant decrease in the hysteresis. Moreover, the efficiency of champion devices with SBP decreased by less than 5% after 200 h of continuous UV (1.63 mW/cm2, 285 nm) irradiation, while the control group dropped to below 75% of the initial value, thus showing significantly improved stability.

Research has established that novelty motivates information-seeking behaviour in many situations. While novelty preferences have been well-studied, an understanding of conditions under which familiarity trumps novelty remains limited. Recent work has revealed that when a metacognitive experience indicates that unsuccessfully recalled information may still be available, a subsequent tendency to seek out unrecalled familiar information can emerge. We conducted three experiments to identify critical factors that determine when familiarity preferences can be observed. Experiment 1 demonstrated the critical role of a recent unsuccessful recall attempt in inducing such a preference. Experiment 2 revealed that the impact of recall attempts is not limited to situations that follow unsuccessful recall, as a familiarity preference was observed even when information was successfully generated. Experiment 3 showed that the level of confidence in the accuracy of any recalled information is a key factor, with moderate levels of confidence leading to the strongest subsequent familiarity preference. Together, our results suggest that novelty preferences in information-seeking are not ubiquitous, as specific situational demands including recent attempted memory retrieval, as well as metacognitive retrieval experiences, can induce familiarity preferences. Our findings can be interpreted within theoretical frameworks that emphasize the role of knowledge gaps as driving factors of information-seeking.

Despite recent increases in perovskite solar cell (PSC) efficiencies, long-term stability remains a barrier to manufacturing and marketing. SnO2 electron transport layers enable the low-temperature processing of planer n-i-p structured PSCs. However, ultraviolet radiation damages to the interface between the electron transport layer and the perovskite (PVK), which is a significant issue for n-i-p configuration. Herein, the insertion of a thin CeO2 passivation layer between the SnO2 and PVK is investigated to block the interface degradation. This CeO2 layer improves charge extraction and reduces defects in the PVK/CeO2 interface, resulting in 22.71% power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to the pristine SnO2 PSC devices, which has a PCE of 20.7%. In addition, after 1700 h of storage at room temperature and 5%-8% RH (dry box), the PCE stability of the reinforced SnO2-CeO2 PSC devices drops from 22% to 19%, whereas that of the pristine SnO2 PSC devices drops from 20% to 16%.

While perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently experienced a rapid rise in power conversion efficiency (PCE), the prevailing PSCs still contain nondesirable defects in the interior and interface of the perovskite layer, which limits further enhancement in PCE and device stability. Herein, a new D-pi-A-type zinc pyridine porphyrin derivative (ZnPP) is synthesized and used as a passivation molecular via the antisolvent process for modifying the typical perovskite bulk thin film, leading to a new type of PSC with a graded passivation ofthe perovskite layer. Impressively, it is found that ZnPP treatment significantly improves the quality of perovskite films and reduces charge transport losses through passivating the uncoordinated Pb2+ cations, yielding devices with a high efficiency of 21.08% with fill factor (FF) of 82.91% and demonstrating the promise of integration of perovskite bulk thin films with tailor molecular via graded modification.

A central tenet in theoretical work on metacognition is that retrieval experiences during memory search can exert control over behaviour. States of curiosity, which reflect motivational tendencies to seek out information, may play a critical role in this control function. We conducted two experiments to address this idea, focusing on links between feeling-of knowing (FOK) experiences, memory-search duration, and subsequent information-seeking behaviour. We administered an episodic FOK paradigm that probed memory for previously studied face-name pairs and subsequently provided an opportunity to select limited pairs for restudy. This set-up allowed us to test whether current search duration and subsequent restudy choices are biased towards information with high FOK ratings. Results revealed a positive relationship between FOK ratings and the response times of these judgements. We observed a similar positive relationship between FOK ratings and subsequent item selection for restudy. Moreover, experimental manipulations of FOK ratings based on familiarity of the face cues also had parallel effects. Our findings suggest that metacognitive experiences during unsuccessful retrieval from episodic memory can induce states of curiosity that shape behaviour beyond the immediate retrieval context. Curiosity may act as a bond to ensure that memory gaps identified through unsuccessful retrieval adaptively guide future learning.

Following the discovery of the antidepressant properties of ketamine, there has been a recent resurgence in the interest in this NMDA receptor antagonist. Although detailed animal models of the molecular mechanisms underlying ketamine's effects have emerged, there are few MEG/EEG studies examining the acute subanesthetic effects of ketamine infusion in man. We recorded 275 channel MEG in two experiments (n = 25 human males) examining the effects of subanesthetic ketamine infusion. MEG power spectra revealed a rich set of significant oscillatory changes compared with placebo sessions, including decreases in occipital, parietal, and anterior cingulate alpha power, increases in medial frontal theta power, and increases in parietal and cingulate cortex high gamma power. Each of these spectral effects demonstrated their own set of temporal dynamics. Dynamic causal modeling of frontoparietal connectivity changes with ketamine indicated a decrease in NMDA and AMPA-mediated frontal-to-parietal connectivity. AMPA-mediated connectivity changes were sustained for up to 50 min after ketamine infusion had ceased, by which time perceptual distortions were absent. The results also indicated a decrease in gain of parietal pyramidal cells, which was correlated with participants' self-reports of blissful state. Based on these results, we suggest that the antidepressant effects of ketamine may depend on its ability to change the balance of frontoparietal connectivity patterns.In this paper, we found that subanesthetic doses of ketamine, similar to those used in antidepressant studies, increase anterior theta and gamma power but decrease posterior theta, delta, and alpha power, as revealed by magnetoencephalographic recordings. Betrayal is common in EVE Online. While not all gameplay based on deception is wrong, betraying a genuine friendship is wrong in any context. While some neo-Aristotelians have argued that perfect friendship is impossible online, it is possible for imperfect people to become Aristotelian character-friends even across imperfect communications channels. Good people are disposed to form friendships when they spend large amounts of time with others; people who make a hobby of feigning friendship are displaying bad character. While the possibility of betrayal does make EVE more interesting as a test of social skills for all players, that does not justify the actions of those who choose to betray.

Li-TFSI/t-BP are the most widely employed p-dopants for hole-transporting materials (HTMs) within the state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The hygroscopicity and migration of these dopants, however, lead to devices with limited stability. To solve this problem, we report here on a diphenyl iodide cation and pentafluorophenyl boric acid anion-based dopant (DIC-PBA) with an oriented interfacial dipole moment as an alternative to Li-TFSI/t-BP. Theoretical and experimental data reveal that DIC-PBA exhibits deep doping of poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-triMethylphenyl)aMine] (PTAA) and also creates p-doping of perovskite surface, which originates from ionic interactions-derived dipole arrangement that yields fast interfacial charge transport. The improved intrinsic stability of PSCs originates from the inhibition of dipole moment degeneration on the perovskite surface. Devices prepared with DIC-PBA yielded high efficiency of 22.86%, and the modules (aperture area: 33.2 cm(2)) efficiency reached 19.13%. Importantly, the storage stability also significantly improved exceeding to 90% after aging 1,200 h under air ambient.

Tin-lead (Sn-Pb) mixed perovskite has received widespread attention due to its suitable band gap width and high optical absorption coefficients. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of Sn-Pb mixed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is still low due to the fact that Sn2+ could be easily oxidized to Sn4+ and an excessively rapid crystallization rate was observed for the Sn-Pb mixed perovskite materials. Herein, we introduced 2-amino-3-hydroxypyridine (AHPD), which contains a pyridine nitrogen and an -NH2 group in the molecule, as a bidentate anchoring additive in the FA(0.7)MA(0.3)Pb(0.5)Sn(0.5)I(3) precursor solution to improve device performance. Incorporation of AHPD into the FA(0.7)MA(0.3)Pb(0.5)Sn(0.5)I(3) precursor solution was found to effectively suppress the Sn2+ oxidation and thus the p-doping level defects. Furthermore, the pyridine nitrogen and the enamine-like -NH2 could retard the nucleation and crystallization rate by forming a coordinating interaction with PbI2/SnI2, forming compact large-grained films and also improving the carrier transport by passivation of the grain boundaries. Overall, compared with the control device (a PCE of 15.72%), an optimized device incorporating 2 mol% AHPD exhibited a PCE of 19.18% for narrow band gap perovskite solar cells, an increase of nearly 22%, with a high level of reproducibility.
