Abstract

The particle and energy transport mechanisms have been investigated in RFX. In the core the particle diffusivity and thermal conductivity are consistent with a stochastic magnetic field model. At the edge particle transport is mainly driven by electrostatic fluctuations, whereas radiation, electrostatic and magnetic turbulence account only for 50% of the total energy losses.

Abstract

This paper presents an overview of recent experimental results obtained on the RFX device. We succeeded in obtaining and study RFP plasma with a plasma current up to 1 MA with negligible radiation losses and low effective charge. The local power and particle balance shows that in standard operation the plasma core is dominated by magnetic turbulence and that the global confinement is mainly provided by the edge region where a strongly sheared radial electric field is present. With poloidal current drive the amplitude of magnetic fluctuation and the thermal conductivity of the plasma core are reduced leading to improved confinement. Reduced heat transport is also observed when the width of the n spectrum of magnetic fluctuations is reduced.

Abstract

Active feedback stabilization of multiple independent resistive wall modes is experimentally demonstrated in a reversed-field pinch plasma. A reproducible simultaneous suppression of several nonresonant resistive wall modes is achieved. Coupling of different modes due to the limited number of the feedback coils is observed in agreement with theory. The feedback stabilization of nonresonant RWMs also has an effect on tearing modes that are resonant in the central plasma, leading to a significant prolongation of the discharge pulse., QC 20100915

Abstract

Epidemiological studies on uranium miners are being carried out to quantify the risk of cancer based on organ dose calculations. Mathematical models have been applied to calculate the annual absorbed doses to regions of the lung, red bone marrow, liver, kidney and stomach for each individual miner arising from exposure to radon gas, radon progeny and long-lived radionuclides (LLR) present in the uranium ore dust and to external gamma radiation. The methodology and dosimetric models used to calculate these organ doses are described and the resulting doses for unit exposure to each source (radon gas, radon progeny and LLR) are presented. The results of dosimetric calculations for a typical German miner are also given. For this miner, the absorbed dose to the central regions of the lung is dominated by the dose arising from exposure to radon progeny, whereas the absorbed dose to the red bone marrow is dominated by the external gamma dose. The uncertainties in the absorbed dose to regions of the lung arising from unit exposure to radon progeny are also discussed. In a previous paper, the information from three studies was reviewed, and a model developed to predict particle retention in the lungs of coal miners was adapted in order to obtain parameter values for general use to predict particle retention in the alveolar–interstitial (AI) region. The model is physiologically based and simpler than the HRTM, requiring two instead of three compartments to model the AI region. The main difference from the HRTM AI model is that a significant fraction, about 35 %, of the AI deposit of insoluble material remains sequestered in the interstitium. Simultaneous analysis here of urine data from both workers gave I f i SB r sb = 0.004, I s i SB s sb = 2 × 10 SP -4 sp d SP -1 sp , and assignment to Type S. (82) [553] assessed the airborne and internal aluminium exposure of 12 aluminium welders and fitters in a shipyard and five manufacturers of aluminium sulphate. Nevertheless, for each element, a default absorption type is recommended for use in the absence of information on which the exposure material can be assigned to Type F, M, or S. For most elements, Type M is recommended by default, including all of those in OIR Part 5 except the halogens (Type F) and aluminium (Type S). When comparing the bioavailability of orally gavaged aluminium citrate, nitrate, chloride, sulphate, and hydroxide in rats for 7 or 14 d, [528] noted few differences in blood and tissue concentrations, except for significantly higher aluminium content in rats gavaged with aluminium citrate. Abstract

The particle and energy transport mechanisms have been investigated in RFX. In the core the particle diffusivity and thermal conductivity are consistent with a stochastic magnetic field model. At the edge particle transport is mainly driven by electrostatic fluctuations, whereas radiation, electrostatic and magnetic turbulence account only for 50% of the total energy losses.

Abstract

This paper presents an overview of recent experimental results obtained on the RFX device. We succeeded in obtaining and study RFP plasma with a plasma current up to 1 MA with negligible radiation losses and low effective charge. The local power and particle balance shows that in standard operation the plasma core is dominated by magnetic turbulence and that the global confinement is mainly provided by the edge region where a strongly sheared radial electric field is present. With poloidal current drive the amplitude of magnetic fluctuation and the thermal conductivity of the plasma core are reduced leading to improved confinement. Reduced heat transport is also observed when the width of the n spectrum of magnetic fluctuations is reduced.

Abstract

In the Mayak Worker Dosimetry System (MWDS-2013), intakes of plutonium and organ doses are assessed on the basis of measurements made on the plutonium content of 56 400 urine samples. Altogether, there were urine bioassays for 7591 (29%) of the 25 757 cohort members who were employed any time at Mayak between 1948 and 1982. These measurements are subject to uncertainty due to many factors (e.g. whether or not creatinine is measured, the volume of the sample, whether diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid was administered, etc.) and this uncertainty will affect not only the uncertainty in the estimated doses, but also the values of the doses themselves. Therefore, it is important for the estimated uncertainty to be as accurate as possible. The input to the dose calculation requires an estimate of the plutonium activity in a true 24-hour sample. The uncertainty in this activity is approximated by a lognormal distribution. The aim of this paper is to describe and justify how the parameters of this lognormal distribution are derived from the raw data. Histograms of the distribution of sample volumes are given for both sexes. The method of calculation of the decision threshold and relative standard uncertainty (RSU) of a measurement result for Pu activity in a worker's urine sample is shown. Abstract

In 1983, a young man inhaled accidentally a large amount of plutonium and americium. This case was carefully followed until 2013. Since no decorporation measures had been taken, the undisturbed metabolism of Pu and Am can be derived from the data. First objective was to determine the amount of inhaled radionuclides and to estimate committed effective dose. In vivo and excretion measurements started immediately after the inhalation, and for quality assurance, all types of measurements were performed by different labs in Europe and the USA. After dose assessment by various international groups were completed, the measurements were continued to produce scientific data for model validation. The data have been analysed here to estimate lung absorption parameter values for the inhaled plutonium and americium oxide using the proposed new ICRP Human Respiratory Tract Model. As supplement to the biokinetic modelling, biological data from three different cytogenetic markers have been added. The estimated committed effective dose is in the order of 1 Sv. Abstract

Purpose: This paper reviews data related to the behavior of the lanthanoid elements (lanthanum through lutetium, atomic numbers 57-71) in the human body and proposes biokinetic models for internally deposited radio-lanthanoids in workers., Materials and Methods: Published data on the following topics are reviewed and analyzed: Physico-chemical properties of the lanthanoids as indicators of the potential behavior of these elements in body fluids; the concentrations of the stable lanthanoids in the environment and human body; and results of biokinetic studies of radio-lanthanoids in human subjects and laboratory animals. Respiratory and systemic biokinetic models and gastrointestinal absorption fractions are developed or selected in an effort to represent the typical behavior of lanthanoids in adult humans., Results and Conclusions: Generic (element-independent) absorption rates from the respiratory and alimentary tracts to blood and systemic biokinetic models are proposed. The systemic models are largely generic but include some element-specific parameter values to reflect regular changes with ionic radius in certain aspects of the behavior of the lanthanoids, particularly fractional deposition in liver and bone and early removal in urine.
