The native budworm, Helicoverpa punctigera (Wallengren), is an important economic insect pest of cotton and other crops. It is widely distributed in Australia and has been recorded on a range of host plants including native, non-crop hosts in inland regions. To date, there are few records of its occurrence on plants with the C4 photosynthetic pathway. Here, we assessed the oviposition preferences of H. punctigera for naturally occurring C3 and C4 plants under glasshouse conditions, to establish their potential as hosts. We conducted bioassays on two C4 plants, saltbushes Atriplex nummularia Lindl. and Atriplex vesicaria Heward ex Benth.; and two C3 plants, legumes Medicago polymorpha L. (burr medic) and Cullen cinereum (Lindl.) J.W.Grimes (annual verbine). The two C4 plants attract egg laying in the field; however, C3 plants are the preferred hosts. Ovipositing females showed a preference for the C3 over the C4 plants but oviposition occurred on both. Of the C4 plants, females preferred to oviposit on A. nummularia (77%) over A. vesicaria (24%) in both a multi- and two-choice test. In addition, ovipositing females preferred the upper leaf surface of A. nummularia (68%) and the under leaf surface of A. vesicaria (64%) as their oviposition site. Our findings suggest that under field conditions, when C4 plants such as saltbushes grow near C3 plants, as occurs in inland regions, the C4 plants could receive eggs along with the C3 plants, enabling the initial stages of larval recruitment to occur in C3 plants. For Helicoverpa punctigera (Wallengren), and to a lesser extent Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), native host plants in non‐cropping regions of inland Australia are believed to be contributors to populations which migrate in spring to infest cropping regions of south‐east Australia, and southwestern Australia. Non‐crop hosts were sampled using sweep nets in 71 survey trips in 19 years between 1987 and 2017 for larvae of H. punctigera and H. armigera, over about 2.4 million km2 in inland Australia. Of 1976 samples, H. punctigera larvae were present in 50.5%, distributed throughout the study area. Larvae were found on 106 host plant species in 24 families, including 61 new host records. H. armigera larvae were found on 33 plant species from eight families, including 14 new host records. However, only 4.3% of samples were positive for this species, and they were mostly in the east of the study area and had fewer larvae than the positive H. punctigera samples. H. punctigera larvae were found in each of six habitats, being, in order of mean numbers per sample: sandy deserts > floodplains > mulga, grasslands and saltbush > stony downs. Host status was determined for both species by plotting relative incidence against relative abundance, and the good hosts for H. punctigera differed between habitats. We discuss the value and limitations of this approach for identifying key hosts in broad scale population dynamics, and primary hosts which may have close co‐evolutionary histories with the insects. A strain of the fungus Cladosporium sp. (RM16) from an egg of Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was assessed as a potential biocontrol agent for this pest. Pathogenicity of the fungus was tested against H. armigera eggs and larvae, cotton aphids (Aphis gossypii Glover; Homoptera: Aphididae), and silverleaf whitefly type B (Bemisia tabaci Gennadius; Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). The pathogenicity of the fungus to the predatory red and blue beetles (Dicranolaius bellulus Guérin-Méneville; Coleoptera: Melyridae), transverse ladybird beetles (Coccinella transversalis Fabricius; Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), green lacewings (Mallada signatus Schneider; Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) and damsel bugs (Nabis kinbergii Reuter; Hemiptera: Nabidae), was also assessed in the laboratory. Fungus treatment resulted in failure to hatch of up to 64% of H. armigera eggs (compared with 11% in the controls) and mortality of 54% of first instar H. armigera larvae (compared with 5% in the controls). In contrast, it was not pathogenic to later instar H. armigera larvae. Cladosporium RM16 was also efficacious against the sap-sucking insect pests of cotton that were tested. No significant harmful effect of the fungus was found on any of the four beneficial predatory insects assessed in this study. Two-spotted spider mites ( Tetranychus urticae Koch) oviposit near leaf veins or in leaf folds on the undersides of cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) leaves where the humid boundary layer offers protection from desiccation. The authors predicted that the boundary layer of glabrous cotton leaves should be shallower than that of hairy leaves, providing some resistance to mites. The dynamics of mite populations, leaf damage, leaf gas exchange and crop yield on two leaf hair isolines (smooth versus hairy) in two genetic backgrounds was assessed. Mite colonies developed faster on the hairy leaf isolines, but leaf damage per mite was higher in smooth leaf isolines, indicating more intense damage. A 50% reduction in photosynthesis on the hairy isolines required 1.8 times more mites than smooth leaves. The yield of cotton was reduced in + mite treatments, but the magnitude of reduction was similar for hairy and smooth isolines. Paradoxically, the relative inhospitality of glabrous leaves may have induced mites to concentrate in protected leaf sections, causing more localised and more severe damage, negating the yield benefits from fewer mites. These results highlight interactions between leaf microenvironment, pest behaviour and plant productivity that may have implications for other instances of plant resistance. This paper is the first of a series which will describe the development of a synthetic plant volatile-based attracticide for noctuid moths. It discusses potential sources of volatiles attractive to the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), and an approach to the combination of these volatiles in synthetic blends. We screened a number of known host and non-host (for larval development) plants for attractiveness to unmated male and female moths of this species, using a two-choice olfactometer system. Out of 38 plants tested, 33 were significantly attractive to both sexes. There was a strong correlation between attractiveness of plants to males and females. The Australian natives, Angophora floribunda and several Eucalyptus species were the most attractive plants. These plants have not been recorded either as larval or oviposition hosts of Helicoverpa spp., suggesting that attraction in the olfactometer might have been as nectar foraging rather than as oviposition sources. To identify potential compounds that might be useful in developing moth attractants, especially for females, collections of volatiles were made from plants that were attractive to moths in the olfactometer. Green leaf volatiles, floral volatiles, aromatic compounds, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were found. We propose an approach to developing synthetic attractants, here termed ‘super-blending’, in which compounds from all these classes, which are in common between attractive plants, might be combined in blends which do not mimic any particular attractive plant. We investigated the efficacy of insecticides combined with a plant volatile-based attractant for Helicoverpa armigera moths, under laboratory and field conditions. In the laboratory, 16 insecticides were assessed by the level of mortality and time to incapacitate and kill moths. The proboscis extension reflex technique was used for dosing moths. The pyrethroids, bifenthrin (only when synergised by the addition of piperonyl butoxide (PBO) but not without it) and cyfluthrin (with or without PBO), endosulfan, the carbamates methomyl and thiodicarb, and spinosad killed all moths tested at rates equivalent to, or less than, those which would be applied in cover sprays targeting larvae. The shortest time to moth incapacitation and death was observed with methomyl and thiodicarb. Spinosad produced very high mortality but moths took much longer to die. The two pyrethroids gave relatively slow kills, as did endosulfan. In a field trial, four insecticides were combined with the attractant and dead moths were collected daily from 1 to 4 days after application of the attracticide on 50 m rows of cotton. Significantly more dead moths ( H. armigera, H. punctigera and other noctuids) were found near the rows treated with attracticide containing methomyl compared with spinosad, fipronil and deltamethrin. For determining the impact of attracticides by recovering dead moths, quick acting insecticides are required to prevent moths flying away from the treated area to locations where they cannot be found. Methomyl and thiodicarb are suitable for this, but other insecticides especially spinosad could be used where quick action is not needed. Large numbers of moths were killed in the field trial, suggesting that attracticides for female Helicoverpa spp. moths could have significant impacts on local populations of these pests. Hematospermia can be a distressing symptom for patients, but most cases are effectively managed by a primary care physician. Although the condition is usually benign, significant underlying pathology must be excluded by history, physical examination, laboratory evaluation, and, in select cases, other diagnostic modalities. In men younger than 40 years without risk factors (e.g., history of cancer, known urogenital malformation, bleeding disorders) and in men with no associated symptoms, hematospermia is often self-limited and requires no further evaluation or treatment other than patient reassurance. Many cases are attributable to sexually transmitted infections or other urogenital infections in men younger than 40 years who present with hematospermia associated with lower urinary tract symptoms. Workup in these patients can be limited to urinalysis and testing for sexually transmitted infections, with treatment as indicated. In men 40 years and older, iatrogenic hematospermia from urogenital instrumentation or prostate biopsy is the most common cause of blood in the semen. However, recurrent or persistent hematospermia or associated symptoms (e.g., fever, chills, weight loss, bone pain) should prompt further investigation, starting with a prostate examination and prostate-specific antigen testing to evaluate for prostate cancer. Other etiologies to consider in those 40 years and older include genitourinary infections, inflammations, vascular malformations, stones, tumors, and systemic disorders that increase bleeding risk. 1. Pollen can be transported thousands of kilometres by insects but its viability after long-distance transport is not known. Knowing the potential for this mechanism to cause outcrossing of transgenes from genetically modified (GM) plants is important for risk assessments.2. The viability of pollen from cotton (Gossypium hirsutumL.) and canola (Brassica napusL.) was determined after placing it on the proboscis ofHelicoverpa armigeramoths for intervals of up to 32 h. Viability of both cotton and canola pollen declined at a much greater rate when in contact with the moth proboscis. Most was non-viable by 8 h compared with 16 h for control cotton pollen or 32 h for canola pollen.3. There was no significant difference in the rate of decline of pollen viability between the five conventional cotton varieties, or between these and the one GM cotton variety used in these experiments.4. The number of canola pollen grains remaining on the proboscis declined over time. Very few cotton pollen grains were retained on the proboscis.5. The reduction in pollen viability during contact with the proboscis might indicate partial ingestion of the pollen via the proboscis.6. The points above suggest that pollen is unlikely to remain attached or remain viable when carried over large distances byH. armigera. Abstract Insect-borne pollen can be a useful marker in studies of local and long-range movement. We investigated the potential of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) pollen on Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) moths, as a tool for studying movement in this major pest species in the Darling Downs region, south-eastern Queensland. Laboratory and field-cage experiments were first conducted to investigate pollen acquisition and retention in moths. Almost all moths given access to sunflower acquired pollen in their proboscis. Pollen was retained in 92–100% of moths after 48 h, but it was retained only in 50% after 96 h under laboratory conditions. Moths that were allowed to feed on sunflower for 48 h in field cages had significantly higher pollen loads than those that were in the cage for 24 h. In mark-capture studies, the proportion of moths that had pollen, as well as the mean pollen loads of moths, significantly declined with distance from the sunflower crop. Our results suggest that sunflower pollen is a transient marker in the field and may be a reliable marker only of recent (previous one or two nights) local movement of H. armigera moths. The bogong moth, Agrotis infusa, an endemic noctuid moth of Australia, is known for its extensive long‐distance movement and summer aestivation in the Australian Alps. Recent studies have focused on moth activity in the Alps, but there are limited data for other regions. This study aims to build on the current understanding of bogong moth movement and breeding patterns using unpublished historical data across eastern Australia. We analysed historical data from moth traps in Victoria, New South Wales (NSW) and South Australia (SA) from the 1960s to early 1990s. The study employed the HYSPLIT model for trajectory analysis of moth flight paths and DARABUG2 for phenological modelling. We examined moth catches across different seasons to infer movement patterns, breeding sources and over‐summering activity. Our findings question several long‐standing assumptions about the spatial ecology of the bogong moth. The trajectory analysis suggests that many aspects of A. infusa movement can be explained via dynamic migration, without fully relying on inherent navigation abilities. Important breeding areas may be beyond the self‐mulching clays of NSW and southern Queensland and include far western NSW, south and central SA and southern Victoria. Substantial moth activity during summer in many traps suggests alternative over‐summering strategies including local breeding or even aestivation in areas other than the Alps. Furthermore, the autumn and winter data imply return migrations from diverse source areas and potential local breeding, expanding the understanding of the moth's life cycle beyond a univoltine pattern. In conclusion, the bogong moth appears to exhibit a more complex and adaptable migration and breeding strategy than previously understood, utilising a range of habitats across eastern Australia for breeding and possibly aestivation. This underscores the need for a revised understanding of bogong moth ecology, which is crucial for its conservation and management, especially considering its recent classification as ‘Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List.
