Fluids leaked from oil and gas wells often originate from their surface casing─a steel pipe installed beneath the deepest underlying source of potable groundwater that serves as the final barrier around the well system. In this study, we analyze a regulatory dataset of surface casing geochemical samples collected from 2573 wells in northeastern Colorado─the only known publicly available dataset of its kind. Thermogenic gas was present in the surface casings of 96.2% of wells with gas samples. Regulatory records indicate that 73.3% of these wells were constructed to isolate the formation from which the gas originated with cement. This suggests that gas migration into the surface casing annulus predominantly occurs through compromised barriers (e.g., steel casings or cement seals), indicative of extensive integrity issues in the region. Water was collected from 22.6% of sampled surface casings. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were detected in 99.7% of surface casing water samples tested for these compounds, which may be due to the presence of leaked oil, natural gas condensate, or oil-based drilling mud. Our findings demonstrate the value of incorporating surface casing geochemical analysis in well integrity monitoring programs to identify integrity issues and focus leak mitigation efforts.

Potential geologic carbon storage (GCS) sites with a history of oil and gas production have well-characterized injectivity and storage capacity, but the presence of legacy wells increases leakage risk. Thus, the success of GCS operations at sites with many wells will require a thorough leakage risk assessment and a robust strategy for managing well leakage risk over the lifetime of the project. In this study, we demonstrate a workflow that uses the National Risk Assessment Partnership’s open-source Integrated Assessment Model to quantify well leakage risks and test the performance of various leakage risk management strategies at a heavily drilled GCS site. Our model simulates a 50-year basin-scale injection of CO 2 at a hypothetical site based on the Kimberlina Project Site in the Southern San Joaquin Valley of California. Brine and CO 2 leakage through 1000 legacy wells into a USDW are stochastically simulated as a proxy for risk. We consider multiple scenarios that explore the efficacy of various well leakage risk management strategies with changes in well leakage behavior, reservoir behavior, and post-injection site care (PISC) length. Predicted leakage at the site after 100 years was small with a maximum CO 2 leakage of 102.1 tonnes (4.08 × 10 −5 % of the 250 Mt injected) and a maximum brine leakage of 2.4 tonnes. Leakage risk management strategies based on accurate prior information about well leak probability reduced leakage risks more effectively at the modeled site and were more robust with respect to reservoir uncertainty than strategies based on the distance of the legacy well from the injector. The importance of the PISC period length was not clear as it had a negligible impact on CO 2 leakage risk but a sizable impact on brine leakage risk in our model.

Significance There are over 900,000 active oil and gas wells in the United States. Estimates of the percentage of these wells that leak during their lifetime have been limited by data availability. We mined publicly available records from state regulatory databases and synthesized the results of various well testing methods into a uniform dataset that describes the integrity of 105,031 wells. Our analysis of the dataset provides insight into regional well leakage frequencies in three US states (Colorado, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania), spatial and temporal leakage trends among vertical and directional wells, and the characteristics of leaked fluids. Our findings demonstrate the value of statewide well testing programs and highlight the challenges of interpreting disparate interjurisdictional well testing data., Oil and gas wells with compromised integrity are a concern because they can potentially leak hydrocarbons or other fluids into groundwater and/or the atmosphere. Most states in the United States require some form of integrity testing, but few jurisdictions mandate widespread testing and open reporting on a scale informative for leakage risk assessment. In this study, we searched 33 US state oil and gas regulatory agency databases and identified records useful for evaluating well integrity in Colorado, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania. In total, we compiled 474,621 testing records from 105,031 wells across these states into a uniform dataset. We found that 14.1% of wells tested prior to 2018 in Pennsylvania exhibited sustained casing pressure (SCP) or casing vent flow (CVF)—two indicators of compromised well integrity. Data from different hydrocarbon-producing regions within Colorado and New Mexico revealed a wider range (0.3 to 26.5%) of SCP and/or CVF occurrence than previously reported, highlighting the need to better understand regional trends in well integrity. Directional wells were more likely to exhibit SCP and/or CVF than vertical wells in Colorado and Pennsylvania, and their installation corresponded with statewide increases in SCP and/or CVF occurrence in Colorado (2005 to 2009) and Pennsylvania (2007 to 2011). Testing the ground around wells for indicators of gas leakage is not a widespread practice in the states considered. However, 3.0% of Colorado wells tested and 0.1% of New Mexico wells tested exhibited a degree of SCP sufficient to potentially induce leakage outside the well.

Maintaining well integrity is critical to the success of geologic carbon storage (GCS) and carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) operations. Wells that experience leakage because of integrity issues can potentially become a risk to the environment or human health if they release previously captured CO2 back into the atmosphere or into freshwater aquifers. There are many GCS and CO2-EOR sites in operation around the world. However, well integrity experiences at these sites are not widely documented in the public domain. This study details findings from a survey of well integrity experiences elicited from operators of GCS and CO2-EOR sites. The goal of the survey was to obtain information about site characteristics and operator experiences with well integrity, monitoring methods, and risk assessment of legacy wells. Literature relevant to the survey questions was also reviewed and summarized to provide context for survey responses and identify areas where field experiences with well integrity do and do not align with the current state of research. We highlight the current state-of-practice, identify research needs, and provide context for future interactions between researchers, operators, and regulators on issues related to well integrity.

The presence of methane and other hydrocarbons in domestic-use groundwater aquifers poses significant environmental and human health concerns. Isotopic measurements are often relied upon as indicators of groundwater aquifer contamination with methane. While these parameters are used to infer microbial metabolisms, there is growing evidence that isotopes present an incomplete picture of subsurface microbial processes. This study examined the relationships between microbiology and chemistry in groundwater wells located in the Denver-Julesburg Basin of Colorado, a rapidly urbanizing area with active oil and gas development. A primary goal was to determine if microbial data can reliably indicate the quantities and sources of groundwater methane. Comprehensive chemical and molecular analyses were performed on 39 groundwater well samples from five aquifers. Elevated methane concentrations were found in only one aquifer, and both isotopic and microbial data support a microbial origin. Microbial parameters had similar explanatory power as chemical parameters for predicting sample methane concentrations. Furthermore, a subset of samples with unique microbiology corresponded with unique chemical signatures that may be useful indicators of methane gas migration, potentially from nearby coal seams interacting with the aquifer. Microbial data may allow for more accurate determination of groundwater contamination and improved long-term water quality monitoring compared solely to isotopic and chemical data in areas with microbial methane.

The risk of environmental contamination by oil and gas wells depends strongly on the frequency with which they lose integrity. Wells with compromised integrity typically exhibit pressure in their outermost annulus (surface casing pressure, SfCP) due to gas accumulation. SfCP is an easily measured but poorly documented gauge of well integrity. Here, we analyze SfCP data from the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission database to evaluate the frequency of well integrity loss in the Wattenberg Test Zone (WTZ), within the Wattenberg Field, Colorado. Deviated and horizontal wells were found to exhibit SfCP more frequently than vertical wells. We propose a physically meaningful well-specific critical SfCP criterion, which indicates the potential for a well to induce stray gas migration. We show that 270 of 3923 wells tested for SfCP in the WTZ exceeded critical SfCP. Critical SfCP is strongly controlled by the depth of the surface casing. Newer horizontal wells, drilled during the unconventional drilling boom, exhibited critical SfCP less frequently than other wells because they were predominantly constructed with deeper surface casings. Thus, they pose a lower risk for inducing stray gas migration than legacy vertical or deviated wells with surface casings shorter than modern standards.

Recent studies suggest that imbibition of hydraulic fracturing fluids into partially saturated shale is an important mechanism that restricts their migration, thus reducing the risk of groundwater contamination. We present computations of imbibition based on an exact semianalytical solution for spontaneous imbibition. These computations lead to quantitative estimates of an imbibition rate parameter (A) with units of LT−1/2 for shale, which is related to porous medium and fluid properties, and the initial water saturation. Our calculations suggest that significant fractions of injected fluid volumes (15–95%) can be imbibed in shale gas systems, whereas imbibition volumes in shale oil systems is much lower (3–27%). We present a nondimensionalization of A, which provides insights into the critical factors controlling imbibition, and facilitates the estimation of A based on readily measured porous medium and fluid properties. For a given set of medium and fluid properties, A varies by less than factors of ∼1.8 (gas nonwetting phase) and ∼3.4 (oil nonwetting phase) over the range of initial water saturations reported for the Marcellus shale (0.05–0.6). However, for higher initial water saturations, A decreases significantly. The intrinsic permeability of the shale and the viscosity of the fluids are the most important properties controlling the imbibition rate.

Stream depletion, which is the reduction in flow rate of a stream or river due to the extraction of groundwater in a hydraulically connected stream-aquifer system, is often estimated using numerical models. The accuracy of these models depends on the appropriate parameterization of aquifer and streambed hydraulic properties. Streambed conductance is a parameter that relates the head difference between the stream and aquifer to flow across the stream channel. It is a function of streambed hydraulic conductivity and streambed geometry. In natural systems, streambed conductance varies spatially throughout the streambed, however, stream depletion modeling studies often ignore this variability. In this work, we use numerical simulations to demonstrate that stream depletion estimates are sensitive to a range of streambed conductance values depending on aquifer properties. We compare the stream depletion estimates from various spatial patterns of streambed conductance to show that modeling streambed conductance as a homogeneous property can lead to errors in stream depletion estimates. We use the results to identify feasible locations for proposed pumping wells such that the stream depletion due to pumping from a well within this feasible region would not exceed a prescribed threshold value, and we show that incorrect assumptions of the magnitude and spatial variability of streambed conductance can affect the size and shape of the feasible region.

Unconventional oil and gas development has generated intense public concerns about potential impacts to groundwater quality. Specific pathways of contamination have been identified; however, overall rates of contamination remain ambiguous. We used an archive of geochemical data collected from 1988 to 2014 to determine the sources and occurrence of groundwater methane in the Denver-Julesburg Basin of northeastern Colorado. This 60,000-km(2) region has a 60-y-long history of hydraulic fracturing, with horizontal drilling and high-volume hydraulic fracturing beginning in 2010. Of 924 sampled water wells in the basin, dissolved methane was detected in 593 wells at depths of 20-190 m. Based on carbon and hydrogen stable isotopes and gas molecular ratios, most of this methane was microbially generated, likely within shallow coal seams. A total of 42 water wells contained thermogenic stray gas originating from underlying oil and gas producing formations. Inadequate surface casing and leaks in production casing and wellhead seals in older, vertical oil and gas wells were identified as stray gas migration pathways. The rate of oil and gas wellbore failure was estimated as 0.06% of the 54,000 oil and gas wells in the basin (lower estimate) to 0.15% of the 20,700 wells in the area where stray gas contamination occurred (upper estimate) and has remained steady at about two cases per year since 2001. These results show that wellbore barrier failure, not high-volume hydraulic fracturing in horizontal wells, is the main cause of thermogenic stray gas migration in this oil- and gas-producing basin.

In regions of the world where growing population and changing climates are threatening water supplies, accurate modeling of potential human impacts on water resources is becoming more important. Stream depletion, the reduction of surface water flow due to the extraction of groundwater from a hydraulically connected aquifer, is a direct way that development can alter water availability. Thus, the accurate modeling of stream depletion is an important step in siting new groundwater wells. Proper estimation of stream depletion requires appropriate parameterization of aquifer and streambed hydraulic properties. Although many studies have conducted numerical investigations to determine stream depletion at specific sites, they typically do not use measured streambed hydraulic conductivity (Kr), but rather assume a representative value. These assumptions are inaccurate for natural systems because Kr varies spatially along the stream channel.
