This article discusses the lingering double standards on gender in Portugal, despite the country's progress in women's rights. The author highlights the word "atrevida," which means "sassy" or "bold" in Portuguese, but carries negative connotations when applied to women. The article suggests that this negative perception of women who challenge norms may contribute to the reluctance of Portuguese women to speak out against sexual harassment, as seen in the limited impact of the #MeToo movement in Portugal. The article also explores the historical context of Salazarism and its impact on women's rights in the country. Overall, the article calls for a change in societal perceptions and for the word "atrevida" to be embraced as a compliment for women, in order to further progress gender equality in Portugal.
