Abstract

Two isomers decaying by electromagnetic transitions with half-lives of 4.7(1.1) and 247(73) μs have been discovered in the heavy ^{254}Rf nucleus. The observation of the shorter-lived isomer was made possible by a novel application of a digital data acquisition system. The isomers were interpreted as the K^{π}=8^{-}, ν^{2}(7/2^{+}[624],9/2^{-}[734]) two-quasineutron and the K^{π}=16^{+}, 8^{-}ν^{2}(7/2^{+}[624],9/2^{-}[734])⊗8^{-}π^{2}(7/2^{-}[514],9/2^{+}[624]) four-quasiparticle configurations, respectively. Surprisingly, the lifetime of the two-quasiparticle isomer is more than 4 orders of magnitude shorter than what has been observed for analogous isomers in the lighter N=150 isotones. The four-quasiparticle isomer is longer lived than the ^{254}Rf ground state that decays exclusively by spontaneous fission with a half-life of 23.2(1.1) μs. The absence of sizable fission branches from either of the isomers implies unprecedented fission hindrance relative to the ground state.

Abstract

Two experiments have been performed at the Accelerator Laboratory of the Department of Physics, University of Jyväskylä, Finland, and are reported here. The first experiment was a recoil-decay tagging study intended to delineate the level scheme of 226U for the first time. The subsequent experiment, the observation of fine structure in the a decay of 230Pu, was to obtain an improved measurement of the excitation energy of the first excited 2+ state, which was tentatively assigned in the first experiment.

Abstract

13 pags., 7 figs., 3 tabs., A new β-decaying state in Bi214 has been identified at the ISOLDE Decay Station at the CERN-ISOLDE facility. A preferred Iπ=(8-) assignment was suggested for this state based on the β-decay feeding pattern to levels in Po214 and shell-model calculations. The half-life of the Iπ=(8-) state was deduced to be T1/2=9.39(10) min. The deexcitation of the levels populated in Po214 by the β decay of this state was investigated via γ-γ coincidences and a number of new levels and transitions was identified. Shell-model calculations for excited states in Bi214 and Po214 were performed using two different effective interactions: the H208 and the modified Kuo-Herling particle interaction. Abstract

The structure of $^{34}$Si was studied through $\gamma$ spectroscopy separately in the $\beta^-$ decays of $^{34}$Mg and $^{34}$Al at the ISOLDE facility of CERN. Different configurations in $^{34}$Si were populated independently from the two recently identified $\beta$-decaying states in $^{34}$Al having spin-parity assignments $J^\pi = 4^-$ dominated by the normal configuration $\pi (d_{5/2})^{-1} \otimes \nu (f_{7/2})$ and $J^\pi = 1^+$ by the intruder configuration $\pi (d_{5/2})^{-1} \otimes \nu (d_{3/2})^{-1}(f_{7/2})^{2}$. The paper reports on spectroscopic properties of $^{34}$Si such as an extended level scheme, spin and parity assignments based on log($ft$) values and $\gamma$-ray branching ratios, absolute $\beta$ feeding intensities and neutron emission probabilities. A total of 11 newly identified levels and 26 transitions were added to the previously known level scheme of $^{34}$Si. Large scale shell-model calculations using the {\sc sdpf-u-mix} interaction, able to treat higher order intruder configurations, are compared with the new results and conclusions are drawn concerning the predictive power of {\sc sdpf-u-mix}, the $N=20$ shell gap, the level of mixing between normal and intruder configurations for the 0$_1^+$, 0$_2^+$ and 2$_1^+$ states and the absence of triaxial deformation in $^{34}$Si.

Abstract

A charge plunger device has been commissioned based on the DPUNS plunger (Taylor a al., 2013) using the in-flight mass separator MARA at the University of Jyvaskyla. The Sm-152(S-32,4n)Pt-180 reaction was used to populate excited states in Pt-180. A lifetime measurement of the 2(1)(+ )state was performed by applying the charge plunger technique, which relies on the detection of the charge state-distribution of recoils rather than the detection of the emitted gamma rays. This state was a good candidate to test the charge plunger technique as it has a known lifetime and depopulates through a converted transition that competes strongly with gamma-ray emission. The lifetime of the 2(1)(+) state was measured to be 480(10) ps, which is consistent with previously reported lifetimes that relied on the standard gamma-ray techniques. The charge plunger technique is a complementary approach to lifetime measurements of excited states that depopulate through both gamma-ray emission and internal conversion. In cases where it is not possible to detect Doppler-shifted gamma rays, for example, in heavy nuclei where internal conversion dominates, it may well be the only feasible lifetime analysis approach.

Abstract

In the study of the odd-Z, even-N nuclei Es-243 and Md-249, performed at the University of Jyvaskyla, the fusion-evaporation reactions Au-197(Ca-48, 2n)Es-243 and Tl-203(Ca-48, 2n) Md-249 have been used for the first time. Fusion-evaporation residues were selected and detected using a gas-filled separator coupled with its focal-plane spectrometer. For Es-243, the recoil decay correlation analysis yielded a half-life of 24 +/- 3 s and a maximum production cross section of 37 +/- 10 nb. In the same way, a half-life of 26 +/- 1 s, an alpha-branching ratio of 75 +/- 5%, and a maximum production cross section of 300 +/- 80 nb were determined for Md-249. The decay properties of Es-245, the daughter of Md-249, were also measured: an alpha-branching ratio of 54 +/- 7% and a half-life of 65 +/- 6 s. Experimental cross sections were compared to the results of calculations performed using the KEWPIE2 statistical fusion-evaporation code.

Excited states in Sn133 were investigated through the β decay of In133 at the ISOLDE facility. The ISOLDE Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) provided isomer-selective ionization for In133, allowing us to study separately, and in detail, the β-decay branch of In133Jπ=(9/2+) ground state and its Jπ=(1/2-) isomer. Thanks to the large spin difference of the two β-decaying states of In133, it is possible to investigate separately the lower and higher spin states in the daughter, Sn133, and thus to probe independently different single-particle and single-hole levels. Abstract

An analysis technique has been developed in order to mitigate energy summing due to sequential short-lived α decays from nuclei implanted into a silicon detector. Using this technique, α-decay spectroscopy of the N=130 isotones Ra218 (Z=88) and Th220 (Z=90) has been performed. The energies of the α particles emitted in the Ra218→Rn214 and Th220→Ra216 ground-state-to-ground-state decays have been measured to be 8381(4) keV and 8818(13) keV, respectively. The half-lives of the ground states of Ra218 and Th220 have been measured to be 25.99(10) μs and 10.4(4) μs, respectively. The half-lives of the ground states of the α-decay daughters, Rn214 and Ra216, have been measured to be 259(3) ns and 161(11) ns, respectively. Fine structure in the α decay of Ra218 has been observed for the first time, populating the 695-keV 21+ state in Rn214. The fine-structure α decay has an α-particle energy of 7715(40) keV and branching ratio bα=0.123(11)%.

Previous studies identified two β-decaying states in Al34 having spin-parity assignments Jπ=4- dominated by the normal configuration π(d5/2)-1 - ν(f7/2) and Jπ=1+ by the intruder configuration π(d5/2)-1 - ν(d3/2)-1(f7/2)2. Their unknown ordering and relative energy have been the subject of debate for the placement of Al34 inside or outside the N=20 >island of inversion.> We report here that the 1+ intruder lies only 46.6 keV above the 4- ground state. In addition, a new half-life of T1/2=44.9(4)ms, that is twice as long as the previously measured 20(10) ms, has been determined for Mg34. The levels in Sn129 populated from the β- decay of In129 isomers were investigated at the ISOLDE facility of CERN using the newly commissioned ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS). The lowest 1/2+ state and the 3/2+ ground state in Sn129 are expected to have configurations dominated by the neutron s1/2 (l=0) and d3/2 (l=2) single-particle states, respectively. Consequently, these states should be connected by a somewhat slow l-forbidden M1 transition. Using fast-timing spectroscopy we have measured the half-life of the 1/2+ 315.3-keV state, T1/2= 19(10) ps, which corresponds to a moderately fast M1 transition. Shell-model calculations using the CD-Bonn effective interaction, with standard effective charges and g factors, predict a 4-ns half-life for this level. We can reconcile the shell-model calculations to the measured T1/2 value by the renormalization of the M1 effective operator for neutron holes. Abstract

The alpha decay of Th-222 populating the low-lying J(pi) = 3(-) state, and also a proposed 1(-) state, in Ra-218 has been observed. The observations suggest an excitation energy of 853 keV for the 1(-) state, which is 60 keV above the 3(-) state. The hindrance factors of these alpha decays give a possible boundary to the region of ground-state octupole deformation in the light-actinide nuclei. The relative positions of the J(pi) = 1(-) and 3(-) states suggest they are produced by an octupole-vibrational mechanism, as opposed to alpha clustering or rotations of a reflection-asymmetric octupole-deformed shape. Abstract

Excited states in the neutron-deficient nuclides 162 74 W88 and 164 74 W90 were investigated by using the γ -ray spectrometer Jurogam. A change in structure is apparent from the first rotational alignments in 162W and 164W, whose rotationally aligned bands are interpreted as ν(h9/2) 2 and ν(i13/2) 2 configurations, respectively. The level schemes have been extended using recoil (-decay) correlations with the observation of excited collective structures. Configuration assignments have been made on the basis of comparisons of the deduced aligned angular momentum, as a function of rotational frequency, with the predictions of the cranked shell model. peerReviewed

Abstract

Excited states in the neutron-deficient nuclei 75163Re88 and 75165Re90 were populated in the 106Cd(60Ni,p2nγ) and 92Mo(78Kr, 3p2nγ) fusion-evaporation reactions at bombarding energies of 270 and 380 MeV, respectively. γ rays were detected at the target position using the JUROGAM spectrometer while recoiling ions were separated in-flight by the RITU gas-filled recoil separator and implanted in the GREAT spectrometer. The energy level schemes for Re163 and Re165 were identified using recoil-decay correlation techniques. At low spin, the yrast bands of these isotopes consist of signature partner bands based on a single πh11/2 quasiproton configuration. The bands display large energy splitting consistent with the soft triaxial shape typical of transitional nuclei above N=82. The configurations of the excited states are proposed within the framework of the cranked shell model.

Abstract

An isomeric state at high spin and excitation energy was recently observed in the proton-unbound nucleus 158Ta. This state was observed to decay by both α and γ decay modes. The large spin change required to decay via γ-ray emission incurs a lifetime long enough for α decay to compete. The α decay has an energy of 8644(11) keV, which is among the highest observed in the region, a partial half-life of 440(70) μs and changes the spin by 11h. In this paper, additional evidence supporting the assignment of this α decay to the high-spin isomer in 158Ta will be presented.

Abstract

Excited states and decay properties of 175 Pt have been investigated using the 92 Mo ( 86 Sr , 2 p n ) fusion-evaporation reaction. The JUROGAM I γ -ray spectrometer and the GREAT spectrometer were used in conjunction with the gas-filled recoil separator RITU for the measurement of the radiation at the target and focal plane positions, respectively. Two new band structures, assigned to be based on the I π = ( 7 / 2 − ) ground state in 175 Pt, have been established and the known yrast band has been extended up to I π = ( 49 / 2 + ) . Rotational properties of the excited states in 175 Pt have been investigated within the cranked shell-model formalism. The low-frequency changes in the alignments of the positive- and negative-parity bands are interpreted as a sign of proton-pair excitations in the rotating core. Furthermore, the α -decay measurements reveal a candidate for a fourth α -decay branch in 175 Pt, feeding a non-yrast state in 171 Os.

Abstract

Transition probabilities have been measured between the low-lying yrast states in 175Au by employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift method combined with the selective recoil-decay tagging technique. Reduced transition probabilities and magnitudes of transition quadrupole moments have been extracted from measured lifetimes allowing dramatic changes in nuclear structure within a low excitation-energy range to probed. The transition quadrupole moment data are discussed in terms of available systematics as a function of atomic number and aligned angular momentum.
