3. An Infinite Parade of Giraffes: Expressive Augmentation and Complexity Layers for Cartoon Drawing

Abstract

In this paper, we explore creative image generation constrained by small data. To partially automate the creation of cartoon sketches consistent with a specific designer's style, where acquiring a very large original image set is impossible or cost prohibitive, we exploit domain specific knowledge for a huge reduction in original image requirements, creating an effectively infinite number of cartoon giraffes from just nine original drawings. We introduce "expressive augmentations" for cartoon sketches, mathematical transformations that create broad domain appropriate variation, far beyond the usual affine transformations, and we show that chained GANs models trained on the temporal stages of drawing or "complexity layers" can effectively add character appropriate details and finish new drawings in the designer's style. We discuss the application of these tools in design processes for textiles, graphics, architectural elements and interior design.

Abstract

In this paper, we confront the problem of deep learning's big labeled data requirements, offer a rule based strategy for extreme augmentation of small data sets and apply that strategy with the image to image translation model by Isola et al. (2016) to automate cel style cartoon coloring with very limited training data. While our experimental results using geometric rules and transformations demonstrate the performance of our methods on an image translation task with industry applications in art, design and animation, we also propose the use of rules on partial data sets as a generalizable small data strategy, potentially applicable across data types and domains.

Abstract

Growing green and amber emitting InGaN/GaN quantum wells in the zincblende, rather than the wurtzite, crystal phase has the potential to improve efficiency. However, optimization of the emission efficiency of these heterostructures is still required to compete with more conventional alternatives. Photoluminescence time decays were used to assess how the quantum well width and number of quantum wells affect the recombination rates, and temperature dependent photoluminescence was used to determine the factors affecting recombination efficiency. The radiative recombination lifetime was found to be approximately 600 ps and to increase weakly with well width, consistent with a change in the exciton binding energy. The relative efficiency at room temperature was found to increase by a factor of five when the number of wells was increased from one to five. Furthermore, the efficiency increased by factor 2.2 when the width was increased from 2.5 to 7.5 nm. These results indicate that thermionic emission is the most important process reducing efficiency at temperatures in excess of 100 K. Moreover, the weak dependence of the rate of radiative recombination on well width means that increasing well thickness is an effective way of suppressing thermionic emission and thereby increasing efficiency in zincblende InGaN/GaN quantum wells, in contrast to those grown in the wurtzite phase. Abstract

A novel deep learning algorithm is proposed for hollow heart detection which is an internal tuber defect. Hollow heart is one of many internal defects that decrease the market value of potatoes in the fresh market and food processing sectors. Susceptibility to internal defects like the hollow heart is influenced by genetic and environmental factors so elimination of defect-prone material in potato breeding programs is important. Current methods of evaluation utilize human scoring which is limiting (only collects binary data) relative to the data collection capacity afforded by computer vision or are based upon X-ray transmission techniques that are both expensive and can be hazardous. Automation of defect classification (e.g. hollow heart) from data sets collected using inexpensive, consumer-grade hardware has the potential to increase throughput and reduce bias in public breeding programs. The proposed algorithm consists of ResNet50 as the backbone of the model followed by a shallow fully connected network (FCN). A simple augmentation technique is performed to increase the number of images in the data set. The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated by investigating metrics such as precision and the area under the curve (AUC).

35. HIV-1 envelope glycan modifications that permit neutralization by germline-reverted VRC01-class broadly neutralizing antibodies

Abstract

Broadly neutralizing antibody (bnAb) induction is a high priority for effective HIV-1 vaccination. VRC01-class bnAbs that target the CD4 binding site (CD4bs) of trimeric HIV-1 envelope (Env) glycoprotein spikes are particularly attractive to elicit because of their extraordinary breadth and potency of neutralization in vitro and their ability to protect against infection in animal models. Glycans bordering the CD4bs impede the binding of germline-reverted forms of VRC01-class bnAbs and therefore constitute a barrier to early events in initiating the correct antibody lineages. Deleting a subset of these glycans permits Env antigen binding but not virus neutralization, suggesting that additional barriers impede germline-reverted VRC01-class antibody binding to functional Env trimers. We investigated the requirements for functional Env trimer engagement of VRC01-class naïve B cell receptors by using virus neutralization and germline-reverted antibodies as surrogates for the interaction. Targeted deletion of a subset of N-glycans bordering the CD4bs, combined with Man5 enrichment of remaining N-linked glycans that are otherwise processed into larger complex-type glycans, rendered HIV-1 426c Env-pseudotyped virus (subtype C, transmitted/founder) highly susceptible to neutralization by near germline forms of VRC01-class bnAbs. Neither glycan modification alone rendered the virus susceptible to neutralization. The potency of neutralization in some cases rivaled the potency of mature VRC01 against wildtype viruses. Neutralization by the germline-reverted antibodies was abrogated by the known VRC01 resistance mutation, D279K. These findings improve our understanding of the restrictions imposed by glycans in eliciting VRC01-class bnAbs and enable a neutralization-based strategy to monitor vaccine-elicited early precursors of this class of bnAbs.

Abstract

An optical parametric oscillator is tuned to the resonance wavelength of the etalon in an optical pumping injection cavity (OPIC) laser with a type-II “W” active region, thereby minimizing the threshold pump intensity and maximizing the output slope efficiency. Previous OPIC experiments employed fixed-wavelength sources with only limited tuning available by adjusting the incident angle. Low threshold pump intensities of 330 W/cm2 at 100 K and 14 kW/cm2 at 300 K (where the output wavelength is 3200 nm) were achieved. The energy conversion efficiency is found to decrease by over a factor of 100 when the pump wavelength is tuned from the resonance condition (1822 nm at 300 K) to only slightly off resonance (e.g., 1808 nm).
