1. Traffic-Aware Energy Optimization in Green LTE Cellular Systems.

Abstract

Commercial deployment of 4G LTE networks and rapid penetration of smart phones have exponentially increased the wireless data traffic, thus increasing the energy consumption and greenhouse (CO_2) gas emission. The concept of green 4G LTE networks lies in the development of energy efficient LTE systems for reducing the greenhouse emissions as well as operators' energy bill. In this letter we first identify the complexity of the optimal traffic awareness in LTE networks and subsequently design a cooperative communication framework for traffic-aware energy optimization. The LTE eNBs explore an information theoretic approach to capture the dynamics and uncertainty of network traffic. Subsequently, using an online, stochastic game theoretic algorithm, the eNBs communicate amongst themselves to optimize the traffic awareness. Optimal traffic awareness helps in reducing the network energy consumption. Simulation results demonstrate that our framework results in almost 22% (40 KW-Hr) daily energy savings across a LTE network of 400 cells. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

A Wireless Power Transfer Network (WPTN) aims to support devices with cable-less energy on-demand. Unfortunately, wireless power transfer itself-especially through radio frequency radiation rectification-is fairly inefficient due to decaying power with distance, antenna polarization, etc. Consequently, idle charging needs to be minimized to reduce already large costs of providing energy to the receivers and at the same time reduce the carbon footprint of WPTNs. In turn, energy saving in a WPTN can be boosted by simply switching off the energy transmitter when the received energy is too weak for rectification. Therefore in this paper we propose, and experimentally evaluate, two "green" protocols for the control plane of static charger/mobile receiver WPTN aimed at optimizing the charger workflow to make WPTN green. Those protocols are: 'beaconing', where receivers advertise their presence to WPTN, and 'probing' exploiting the receiver feedback from WTPN on the level of received energy. We demonstrate that both protocols reduce the unnecessary WTPN uptime, however trading it for the reduced energy provision, compared to the base case of 'WPTN charger always on'. Abstract

International audience; Wireless networks have important energy needs. Many benefits are expected when the base stations, the fundamental part of this energy consumption, are equipped with renewable energy (RE) systems. Important research efforts have been done to enhance the utilization of RE. However, to the best of our knowledge, these efforts did not take into consideration partially RE-equipped systems. The latter is of great importance considering the high cost of these systems and the feasibility of implementing RE systems at all base station sites. Thus, it is interesting to study the percentage of sites to be equipped with RE systems. In this work, we analyze the energy and cost savings for a defined energy management strategy of a RE hybrid system. Our study of the relationship between cost savings and percentage of sites equipped with RE show significant results. For example, our simulation shows that a cost gain of 60% is realized when 30% of the base stations are equipped with solar panels that harvest only 35% of the total network energy demand at full load. Results also show an upper limit for the battery capacity at which the cost gain is maximized.

Abstract

International audience; Today, mobile networks are witnessing an exponential growth of traffic volumes, linked to new services, especially for smart cities and smart-grid. The European Celtic-Plus SooGREEN project, started mid 2015, is targeting to reduce the energy consumption of the services in different mobile architectures in interaction with smart-grid. SooGREEN is focused on the services energy consumption modelling and measurement, the dynamic optimization of the mobile access network and of the content delivery, the design of an Energy Efficient Virtualized and Centralized Radio Access Network (RAN), and the bi-directional interaction of the mobile network with the smart-grid. This paper presents insight into the project after its first year, and discusses research trends in green communication networks for the future.

Abstract

SUMMARY The present paper introduces a prototype design and experimental results for a multi-user MIMO linear precoding system. A base station and two mobile stations are implemented by taking full advantage of the software-defined radio. The base station consists of general purpose signal analyzers and signal generators controlled by a personal computer. Universal software radio peripherals are used as mobile stations. Linear spatial precoding and a simple two-way channel estimation technique are adopted in this experimental system. In-lab and field transmission experiments are carried out, and the bit error rate performance is evaluated. The impact of the channel estimation error under average channel gain discrepancy between two mobile stations is analyzed through computer simulations. Channel estimation error is shown to have a greater influence on the mobile station with the greater average channel gain.

Abstract

International audience; Energy efficiency of wireless cellular networks is a well-studied domain and many proposals have been done following different amelioration paths. In this paper, we analyze the efficient use of small cells in a renewable energy context and considering real-time price of grid energy. This is typically the case when the mobile network is powered by the Smart Grid, in addition to renewable energy when available. We study the use of an algorithm adapted for this context and analyze it in simulation. Our results show that a suitable number or density of small cells gives better cost and energy savings performance, if we take grid energy cost into account.

Low-energy is particularly relevant in wireless because of the limited energy available to terminals and the high consumption of the base stations derived from wide geographical coverage. Green wireless aims to formulate a long term research goal in the wireless environment. In the talk, the speaker will present the motivation and formulation of this research goal, with an overview of the associated research challenges. Abstract

International audience; Distributed antenna systems (DAS) are known to improve coverage and performance of wireless communications in indoor environments. In the present paper, we propose a method to determine the position of distributed antennas that optimizes the network capacity for a given deployment scenario. We also consider power consumption measurements of commercially-available Wi-Fi access points and dongles, in order to quantify the energy efficiency of a DAS using Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) technologies. Our results show that there exists an optimal number of distributed antennas for a given topology of the indoor environment.

Abstract

The present paper introduces a prototype design and experimental results for a multi-user MIMO linear precoding system. A base station and two mobile stations are implemented by taking full advantage of the software-defined radio. The base station consists of general purpose signal analyzers and signal generators controlled by a personal computer. Universal software radio peripherals are used as mobile stations. Linear spatial precoding and a simple two-way channel estimation technique are adopted in this experimental system. In-lab and field transmission experiments are carried out, and the bit error rate performance is evaluated. The impact of the channel estimation error under average channel gain discrepancy between two mobile stations is analyzed through computer simulations. Channel estimation error is shown to have a greater influence on the mobile station with the greater average channel gain.

11. Performance Optimisation of Soft and Hard Spectrum Sensing Schemes in Cognitive Radio.

Abstract

Cognitive radios represent a promising technique to address the problem of efficient spectrum utilisation. However, their performance is limited by their capability to sense the spectrum. This letter proposes a fair comparison between soft and hard spectrum sensing schemes, based on the practical assumption of limited time resources, which was never explored in previous studies. By considering the achieved detection probability as the performance metric and the false alarm probability as constraint, this work analytically proves that the hard scheme can represent a favourable solution, especially in short sensing times and/or large numbers of users. The sufficient condition by which the soft scheme outperforms the hard scheme is also introduced. This condition is represented by the number of collected samples from the channel in a closed-form expression, which depends on the sensing time, the Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR), the number of available users and the predefined false alarm probability threshold. All these factors are independently evaluated throughout this work. The analysis is carried out through mathematical equations and confirmed by simulation results. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
