Predicting pesticide fate with a reasonable degree of precision using mathematical models requires a good choice of parameter values. When experimentally derived values are not readily available, or need to be measured individually for each compound through systematic laboratory experiments, the process not only becomes too time-consuming, but also may not yield reliable parameters due to the uncertainties encountered with laboratory measurements. The inverse modelling technique has therefore become an important tool in recent times, allowing calibration of models against experimental data and thus alleviating the lack of exactness, reproducibility, and objectivity often associated with laboratory-derived data and trial-error simulation. In this study, we used the inverse modelling package PEST interfaced with the GLEAMS, HYDRUS-1D, and LEACHM models to derive field-based mobility and degradation parameters for a selected number of pesticides, along with a bromide tracer, applied to 2 contrasting field sites in the south island of New Zealand. Given the broad range in soil properties at both sites and the climatic conditions (one drier than the other) used in testing, the models performed well. Based on the performance of the models, they can be ranked in the order LEACHM > HYDRUS-1D > GLEAMS. Bromacil appeared to be the most mobile among the compounds at both sites as well as having a greater persistency, followed by hexazinone and terbuthylazine, based on their optimised [K.sub.oc] values at the sites. For bromacil, median optimised [K.sub.oc] values were 22 and 35 mL/g at Nelson and Southland sites, respectively (compared with a best available value of 14 mL/g). However, [T.sub.1/2] values for bromacil were much lower than the available best literature value of 207 days. The median [K.sub.oc] values for terbuthylazine were 114 and 87 mL/g at Nelson and Southland sites, respectively. These values were much lower than the best available literature value of 220 mL/g, and fall below the literature range (162-278 mL/g for terbuthylazine). Additional keywords: models, simulation, bromide, bromacil, hexazinone, terbuthylazine., Introduction The last 2 decades have witnessed an increasing use of computer simulation models, potentially a cost- and time-effective way of predicting the fate of pesticides and other agrochemicals in [...]

Seven pesticides were applied to an allophanic silt loam along with a bromide tracer and their concentrations in soil and water monitored over a 2-year period, inverse modelling was carried out using GLEAMS, LEACHM, and HYDRUS-2D to derive field-based mobility and degradation parameters. Hexazinone and procymidone were more mobile and more persistent than most literature values would suggest, whereas picloram and triclopyr were much less mobile but more persistent. The greater mobility for hexazinone, a weak base, and the reduced mobility of picloram and triclopyr, weak acids, are consistent with the effects of allophane. Mobility values for 2,4-D, atrazine, and terbuthylazine could not be determined with confidence from experimental results, but both atrazine and terbuthylazine appeared less persistent, and 2,4-D more persistent than literature values. A fourth model, SPASMO, currently under development, was used as an independent test of the optimised parameters. It performed well for the soil water concentrations but totaled to overestimate the observed soil concentrations using the derived parameters. HYDRUS-2D simulations of bromide and hexazinone concentrations in the groundwater gave a good fit to observed data from 3 monitoring wells following a large recharge pulse. Additional keywords. hexazinone, picloram, procymidone, triclopyr, bromide, mobility, degradation, persistence., Introduction Computer simulation models are useful for understanding the behaviour of pesticides in the soil and groundwater. They are increasingly being used to predict the transport and fate of agrochemicals [...]

The purpose of the study was to compare the response of TDR-determined stem ([[theta].sub.stem]) and soil ([[theta].sub.soil) water content to different irrigation managements. [[theta].sub.stem] (L [L.sup.-1) was measured with three-rods TDR probes (70 mm) installed vertically or horizontally into predrilled holes in the trunk of 5-yr-old lemon [Citrus limon (L.) Burman f.] trees in a semiarid region (Israel). Four irrigation treatments were established to deliver 100% ('full'), half of this amount on one side of the tree ('50%'), same amount as in 50% but applied to alternate sides (3-wk intervals) of the tree ('split'), and 0% ('dry') of the orchard's normal irrigation volume (typically 150-200 [m.sup.3] [wk.sup.-1] [ha.sup.-1]). Treated sewage water ([[sigma].sub.w] = 0.9 dS [m.sup.-1]) was used to irrigate the trees for 75 d (end of June and mid September). Changes in [[theta].sub.soil], and [[theta].sub.stem] were monitored at weekly intervals. Leaf water potential and temperature measurements were used to verify the achieved water stress levels. [[theta].sub.stem] of the full treatment fluctuated by about 0.02 to 0.03 L [L.sup.-1] above and below the 'prestress' reference level (beginning of the season). In contrast, [0.sub.stem] of the 50% treatment declined (by about 0.07 L [L.sup.-1) steadily over the season. For the split and dry treatments, [[theta].sub.stem] decreased by about 0.12 L [L-.sup.1] relative to the reference level. [[theta].sub.soil] and [[theta].sub.stem] values suggest that some surplus irrigation was applied to the full and 50% treatments. It was found that water stress was reflected in TDR-measured [[theta].sub.stem] changes but that these changes were too small for routine irrigation control.

When time domain reflectometry (TDR) is used to measure soil water content ([theta]) and salinity, the probes can be installed either horizontally or vertically. We tested the common convention that [theta] values averaged from horizontal probes will be equal to a vertical direct measurement. In a laboratory experiment, a sandy loam soil, packed uniformly (0.02-m layers to 0.18-m depth) into a box, was gradually wetted to saturation by Ca[Cl.sub.2] solutions of 0, 0.5, 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 4.5, 5.9, and 8.4 dS [m.sup.-1]. Horizontal and vertical TDR probes for measuring [theta] and electrical conductivity of the bulk soil ([[sigma].sub.a]) were installed during soil packing. A comparison between [theta] values averaged from three horizontal probes and from two vertical ones showed deviations of 0.02 (L [L.sup.-1]). A simple water redistribution model was used to attribute this deviation to the process of averaging the horizontal results. The best practical attainable reproducibility, under our experimental conditions, were close to the theoretical limit 0.005 (L [L.sup.-1]) but the average experimental reproducibility of [theta] was 0.01 to 0.02 (L [L.sup.-1]). Width of the soil layer affecting the moisture measurement was reconfirmed to be close to 30 mm. The resistors-in-series model was found to be a good approximation to describe the soil profile [[sigma].sub.a] from separately measured horizontal [[sigma].sub.a]. Final values of the electrical conductivity of the soil solution ([[sigma].sub.w]) after sufficient leaching were in good agreement with [[sigma].sub.w] values calculated by an empirical protocol that uses [[sigma].sub.a], [theta], and a soil texture property.

A numerical model for axisymmetric flow of water and solute underneath a disk permeameter was developed based on experiments conducted in sand packed box containing a 1/4-sector disk permeameter. This is used to determine the chemical transport properties of soil by a removal and replacement of the disk. This activity created no disturbance in the model. The model, based on disk permeameter experiments, is also useful for parameter identification.

- Abstract
Proper upfront planning is critical for implementing successful rehabilitation and closure strategies, and investment in the planning process needs to be carried out in a structured and rigorous manner taking into account the long-term and broad benefits of sustainable land uses after mine closure. The advantages may include the streamlining of regulatory approvals and providing clear evidence of a strong social licence to operate ethic with local, regional and national benefits. The potential closure options for two case studies at the early stages of project development, concept and prefeasibility, are considered. In the first the SUSOP Sustainability Framework, a research outcome from the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing, was used to assist in the selection of one of three potential sites for a new alumina refinery operation in West Africa. About 70 opportunities covering all aspects of sustainability were identified, including those that delivered enhanced closure plans and land management initiatives. Examples of the individual opportunities and the resulting clusters called ‘concepts’ focused on aspects of neutralising or re-using the bauxite residue, such as for CO2 sequestration or as a feedstock for geopolymer production. The most favourable option was the neutralisation of the effluent with calcium hydroxide, including a small reverse osmosis water treatment facility to treat unplanned discharges to the local river system. - Abstract
Optimization of water use in agriculture and quantification of percolation from landfills and watersheds require reliable estimates of vadose zone water fluxes. Current technology is limited primarily to lysimeters, which directly measure water flux but are expensive and may in some way disrupt flow, causing errors in the measured drainage. We report on design considerations and field tests of an alternative approach, passive wick fluxmeters, which use a control tube to minimize convergent or divergent flow. Design calculations with a quasi-three-dimensional model illustrate how convergence and divergence can be minimized for a range of soil and climatic conditions under steady state and transient fluxes using control tubes of varying heights. There exists a critical recharge rate for a given wick length, where the fluxmeter collection efficiency is 100% regardless of the height of the control tube. Otherwise, convergent or divergent flow will occur, especially when the control tube height is small. While divergence is eliminated in coarse soils using control tubes, it is reduced but not eliminated in finer soils, particularly for fluxes 60% annual precipitation) from gravel surfaces and least (no drainage) from silt loam soils. In Oregon and New Mexico, United States, and in New Zealand, drainage showed substantial spatial variability. The New Mexico tests were located in semiarid canyon bottom terraces, with flash flood prone locations having extremely high drainage/precipitation ratios. In the wettest environments, drainage was found to be closely linked to the rate and duration of precipitation events.

- Abstract
In this paper, we show how flow and transport models are introduced in the nutrient and pesticide management decision-making process. Examples are given of the use of flow and transport models in (i) field-scale nutrient and pesticide management; (ii) the identification and evaluation of fertilization and pesticide application practices supporting the implementation of regional-scale environmental management plans; and (iii) the registration of plant-protection products
